Saturday evening Headliner Nationally and internationally acclaimed, folk singer-songwriter

Tom Rush -with Matt nakoa Tom is a gifted

musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration – a journey into the tradition & spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become.

His distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues.

Tom Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty and Garth Brooks have cited Tom as major influences. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Subsequently, his Club 47 concerts brought attention to emerging artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. Now celebrating his 52nd year on stage and in the studio, he still does what audiences love him for: writing and playing …passionately, tenderly…knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times.

tom rush “has made his reputation as a soft-spoken, powerful interpreter of traditional songs”

Dear Festival Goers: The mission of the Columbus Folk Music Society (a not-for-profit organization) is to promote the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of folk music, song, dance, storytelling and the other folk arts inclusive of all cultures. The annual Central Ohio Folk Festival is one of the most important means we use to accomplish this. All activities are free, with the exception of workshops and Saturday evening concert!

Come and participate in the many family friendly activities! Whether you are an individual or a family, a musician or a lover of the folk arts, we know you’ll enjoy the various activities, music and learning opportunities found at the festival. We’ve outgrown our former location, so beginning in 2018, the festival will be held at Highbanks Metro Park. This festival would not be possible without so many helping hands – from the many Metro Park volunteers and employees to the Columbus Folk Music Society members & friends who donate their time and talents to make this weekend a reality AND a fun and enjoyable time for everyone. We also want to thank the many musicians and sound personnel who give of themselves so tirelessly as well as our business supporters!

The Columbus Folk Music Society, which produces the festival, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

Kirby Main Stage Performers (in order of appearance)Times/Events subject to change. Visit our web page for up-to-date schedule information.

The Castros (Westerville, OH) Somos Los Castros! A husband and wife duo making music for the heart. He’s from Costa Rica; she’s from Ohio. They fell in love, got married and now are making waves regionally and internationally with their heartfelt folksy tunes, which fluctuate between haunting and deeply emotional – all written with honesty and passion.www.thecastrosmusic.com 3 p.m. Saturday

Storytellers of Central Ohio (Columbus, OH)The Storytellers of Central Ohio (SOCO) are a dynamic group of men and women of all ages who believe in the power, the magic, and the wonder of storytelling in the oral tradition. Founded in 1990 to promote the art of storytelling, and to foster the growth and development of storytellers, SOCO now plays an

integral part in the world-wide renaissance of storytelling. Listen to some of them on the main stage! www.socotales.org Noon Saturday

Sour Cherry Pie (Columbus, OH) This duo consists of Phil Hart and talented sideman Steve Rolfe. Phil, a creative and engaging singer-songwriter, has roots going back to the sixties folk era. Since 1970, he has been writing folks songs, children’s songs, and songs about faith. His songs are

flavored by the styles of Dylan, Paxton, and John Prine. Some of his more recent work has political and religious energy inspired by Phil Ochs and Leonard Cohen. www.pahart.com. 2 p.m. Saturday

Hedgehog String Band (Zanesville, OH) Hedgehog String Band is an old-time trio consisting of Bob Lucas, daughter Chloe Manor, and her husband Chris Westhoff. This ensemble makes music with “power, thrust and charm” – just down right good and dancy. And they don’t draw the line at old time traditional music. As often is the case, they find tradition to be a springboard that gives lift and velocity to dive into the ever-welcoming pool of twenty first century contemporary music. www.boblucasmusic.com 1 p.m. Saturday

The Folk Ramblers (Opening Sing-Along) Bill Cohen (guitar & vocals) and Carl Yaffey (banjo & vocals) perform classic folk songs of the 50s & 60s made famous by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and many others. They’ll have the audience heartily singing along in no time (indeed that will be their very intent). Join them at the festival opening! Folkramblers.carl-yaffey.com

Modock Rounders (Durbin, W. VA) What began as two friends learning to play fiddle & banjo tunes during all night sessions on the back porch, has grown into a multi-generational old-time powerhouse. Jesse Pearson (fiddle/guitar), Cody Jordan (guitar/vocals/fiddle), and Kim Johnson (banjo) form the core of The Modock Rounders, a traditional stringband from West Virginia’s

Kanawha Valley, and they are keeping hot the fires of the Mountain State’s fiddling heritage. www.modockrounders.com Noon Sunday

Others: The Relentless Mules, Delpin Sisters, Suzuki Music Columbus & more!

Grassinine (Columbus, OH)A band “started by accident and staying together by luck.” Dreamt up after a golf outing by Tom Krouse & Jamie Davis, the band actually came together on a pontoon boat on the Scioto because they thought it would be funny to bring a gut bucket & a banjo and float up and down the river trying to scare people Deliverance-style. What actually

happened was something quite different. And they’re still at it and enjoying every minute!www.grassinine.com 4 p.m. Saturday

Laurie McClain (Lincoln, NE) With 6 released CDs under her belt, its Americana/Folk singer-songwriter Laurie McClain’s honey voice that soothes and her powerful lyrics that heals hearts.
