The Dean’s Message For some of us, vacation time is past and the new
season has almost begun. I truly hope all of you are
sufficiently rested and energized for the months ahead!
The new Columbus Chapter Membership Directory
should arrive in the mail by the second week of
September and will include a listing of our 2014-15
program year. Please enter the dates on your calendar
and plan to participate as much as possible in the
programs and events your chapter is providing.
Most of you will have seen the full-page announcement
in the August issue of The American Organist sponsored by our chapter to
announce and celebrate the 100th birthday of Wilbur Held on August 20th. For
those new to Columbus, Dr. Held was for many years Professor of Organ at
Ohio State University and Organist/Choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church on
Capitol Square. Take note of this occasion and plan to program Dr. Held’s
music on that Sunday. Please send that Sunday’s order of worship to Al Adcock
who will then prepare a packet to be sent to Dr. Held. Our thanks to Al Adcock
for planning this very appropriate observance and to Tim Wilson for absorbing
the cost of preparation and printing of the announcement.
It is not too early to encourage friends and neighbors to plan on bringing their
children to our Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event on Saturday morning, October
25th at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westerville. We plan on making this a
yearly happening, building on the highly successful program held last October
at the Broad Street Methodist Church.
In closing this message, I would express the wish to meet as many of our
members as possible, especially those newest to our chapter. The Columbus
Chapter is now the largest in Ohio, and it is impossible to personally contact
each of our 175+ members.
As you attend programs, please make it a point to say hello to me and my fellow
officers so we may greet you and have a chance to become acquainted.

Young Organists’ Scholarship Fund
The Young Organists’ Scholarship Fund has been established to provide
financial assistance to young, aspiring organists to the age of 22 who
demonstrate a serious interest in developing their skills as an organist. Up to
$500 may be awarded each year to one or more candidates for this purpose. A
scholarship student may reapply the following year for renewal of their award.
The executive committee of the Columbus Chapter may choose not to award a
scholarship in any given year. Also, the committee will request that organ study
be with a member of the American Guild of Organists.
A form for application is included at the end of this issue of The Guilder. Once
this is received, a panel, chosen by the dean, will meet with the applicant for an
interview/audition. Please note that the application for study through the Young
Organists’ Scholarship Fund is not to be confused with short-term enrichment
programs such as summer study in POE workshops.
The primary source of funding for these scholarships will be through the
offering collected at our annual Student Recital in the spring. Additional
contributions may be made at any time and are a meaningful way to honor an
individual or group or the memory of a loved one or colleague. Checks for this
purpose should be made out to Columbus Chapter - AGO and sent to our
chapter treasurer, Al Adcock. Names of donors and honorees will be listed in
The Guilder and in the printed program for the Student Recital, unless we are
instructed otherwise.
Complimentary Student Memberships
The Columbus Chapter will sponsor up to ten student memberships for the
2014-15 program year. It is expected that the recipients will demonstrate
interest in the work of the AGO by attending at least two chapter events and
participating in our annual Student Recital, taking place this coming season on
Sunday, April 26th. Students between the ages of 10 and 24 are welcome to
apply. Teachers may recommend students and students themselves may apply
by written request to the dean.
