Identity thieves don’t just target adults; children can be victims, too. In 2017, more than 1 million kids were victims of identity theft or fraud.

To check if your child may have been a target, file a child-identity inquiry with each of the three main credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion).

If your child has fraudulent information on their credit report, you’ll need to verify their status as a minor by providing a birth certificate or other form of identification. Ask each of the reporting agencies to remove all accounts and collection notices from any file associated with your child’s name. You can also report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (ftc.gov/complaint).
