a new and exciting season of operas from Hawaii Opera Theatre,

From the fragile beauty of Japan to the dark and dangerous streets of London, we’re bringing music from around the globe to Honolulu. This season, there’s a distinctly nautical theme filling the air, with The Flying Dutchman’s four-mast schooner and the British ship which is the

setting for Siren Song, as well as the ship that brings the demon barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd, to London, and the US naval ship eagerly awaited by Cio-Cio-San, better known as Madam Butterfly.

Our productions this season are sure to fill you with drama, action, unrequited love, revenge, tears, and smiles as well as the world’s most beautiful music sung by some of the world’s leading

opera singers. We’re also pleased to announce that for the first time in nearly 20 years, HOT is presenting four full-scale productions, including one in a completely new venue in Honolulu’s up-and-coming warehouse district at Kaka’ako.

Please join us for spectacular performances that will take you on a series of life changing journeys.

In Nagasaki, Japan, an American naval officer named Pinkerton is set to marry a young woman name Cio-Cio-San (“Butterfly” in Japanese). While Cio-Cio-San is in love, Pinkerton views the marriage as a simple convenience. In fact, Madam Butterfly has become so infatuated with Pinkerton that she renounces her Buddhist beliefs and converts to Christianity. Hearing this, Madam Butterfly’s uncle shows up at their wedding and curses her. Not long after, Pinkerton leaves Japan, promising to return to her soon, all the while knowing that he doesn’t feel the same about her as she does him.

For three years, Madam Butterfly waits for Pinkerton. When he finally does return, we learn that Pinkerton has taken a new American wife and that Cio-Cio-San has given birth to a son. How will she react to the news that the love of her life has taken another wife? Find out in Giacomo Puccini’s famed three-act opera, Madam Butterfly.

A contemporary opera based on a true story, the plot of Siren Song is so rich with eyebrow-raising turns that it could only spawn from real-life events.

A young British sailor is communicating with a woman that he believes to be a professional model. The sailor’s infatuation with the woman flourishes over time, but there’s only problem: He’s never actually met her. Any attempt to do is met so with excuses from the purported model. Eventually, we learn that the sailor has been played and is the victim of an elaborate deception. But that’s just the beginning…

Find out how this story, practically ripped from today’s headlines, unfolds in Jonathan Dove’s acclaimed Siren Song.

For more than 150 years, Richard Wagner’s famed opera, The Flying Dutchman, has been captivating audiences across the world. Set along the Norwegian coast, legends tell of a ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, captained by a man simply known as the Dutchman, who is cursed to wander the sea. His only chance at redemption comes every seven years. If the Dutchman can find a wife that will be true to him, he’ll be set free of his curse.

With his chance at redemption once again upon him, through a dowry of gold made to another sailor, the Dutchman finds himself betrothed to a woman named Senta, whom appears to love him deeply. But soon, the Dutchman learns that Senta has another lover. Solemn, with his curse eating at his soul, the Dutchman readies himself to go back to sea. Will Senta prove her love for the Dutchman and set him free, or will he and his ship be cursed to wander the seas for eternity?

On the gritty streets of London, a man who calls himself Sweeney Todd sets foot in England for the first time in 15 years. More than a decade-and-a-half earlier, Todd, AKA Benjamin Barker, was wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to an Australian penal colony, forced to leave his wife and daughter behind. When he finally returns to London, he has one thing on his mind: revenge. Armed with a straight razor and parading as one of the city’s finest barbers, Todd finds himself in cahoots with a woman named Mrs. Lovett, a local baker who lusts after Todd, and is willing to help him extract his vengeance.

Will Todd’s thirst for blood lead him to the authorities or will he carve himself a new life as London’s most ruthless killer?
