Jiangmen
From Guangzhou International Airport to Wuyi University
Superhighways cut
through the countryside. China has built more than
18,000 miles of new highway during the past
decade.
Car Culture
Traffic moves slowly, closely, carefully. The street is
shared by all. The bigger the vehicle, the more it owns the
right of way.More than
5 million cars were sold in China last year. Like this Buick,
most were made in China.More were sold in only Japan
and the United States.
Wuyi University
Wuyi University• Founded in 1985.
• Located in Jiangmen City (a well-known hometown of the overseas Chinese) in Guangdong Province (close to Hong Kong and Macao).
• Two schools: (Management and Information Technology). Fifteen departments.
• More than 11,000 registered students on campus of which approximately 8,000 are full-time undergraduates.
• Four-year undergraduate programs and a Masters Degree Program.
• WYU has gained great support in its construction and expansion from overseas Chinese.
VIP Treatment
Vice President LIU Zhiyong
emphasized harmony during dinner along the Pearl River.
Wuyi University is very serious about the Faculty Exchange
Program and we were treated like VIPS.
A river runs through it. Architects use ancient water
features to accent the beauty of modern designs.
The International Cultural Center is home away from
home for VIP guests.
Francis Zheng, is Director of the Foreign Affairs Office.
Betty Song, Gerald Teng and Ma Lan mean it when they say
“Let us know if we can be of any help.”
Think Holiday Inn where Staff speak Chinese.
Guest rooms
are pleasant and Center staff anxious to serve.
Western facilities are provided and exist in many other
places as well.
Laundry service is quick, inexpensive and excellent.
Connectivity
Computers are connected via high speed cable.
There are three Internet connected machines,
wireless access for five more and five Ethernet
cables as well.
Chinese Food is Wonderful
Westernized Chinese food made us feel at home.
Chopsticks are an option.Eating slowly and enjoying
each bite is an excellent way to lose pounds.
Mesa Community College students were excellent
company. Dr. Effland is a hero.
Spectacular Views
The Chinese five-star Yucca Hotel as seen from the
door to my room in the International Cultural Center.
Multiple restaurants, four stories of shopping mall and
a theater complex. Star Wars opened the same day here it opened in Phoenix.
First Things First
The International ATM at the bank on campus makes it
easy to obtain Yuan.
Go with Ma Lan to the tailor and immediately order
custom-made clothes as they take two weeks to
make.
Tour Guide Extraordinaire
Alfred RUAN Yongjian
is outgoing Student Union President and an excellent guide.
Student volunteers practice English while serving as off-campus
escorts.
These are not cuddly kittens. Ivey, Ice and Tracy were dead serious about
safety. Give them money and let them bargain for you.
Cantonese Kung Fu
The past is honored. In 1428 Baisha Chen reformed the
education system and mastered Kung Fu. Great grandsons used
Kung Fu to fight the Japanese invasion.
Money Spoke
This student guide,
who calls herself “Money” because that sounds like her Chinese name, led us to the
cool mountain spring upon which Buddha rests.
Many people pray to
Buddha.
Ancient Sites and Rituals
Pagodas and tombs abide among the trees.
The higher a wish lands
the more it is likely to come true.
Confucius Say
The Emperor considered the lowly teacher
Confucius his equal.
How many people remember the Emperor’s
name or anything else about him?
Confucius lives.
Sunday in the Park
Sunday is the day Cantonese
celebrate in East Lake Park.
Weddings are the same everywhere.
Compare the above wedding party to that of my daughter
and son-in-law in Sedona, Arizona.
High Stake Exams
All Wuyi students carry a cell phone -- Sandy
had two. While taking us to the Exposition Center she got a call saying she
passed her graduation exams. Sandy was loud
as she talked on both phones at once. Last
semester she was the only one of her cohort to
pass on schedule and celebration would have
been rude.
Industrialization Reigns
This is the Exposition Center
where global merchants place orders for Wuyi and
Taiwan made motorcycles, appliances, industrial equipment and just about anything else
you can imagine.
New and Old Factories Everywhere
20% of all Chinese motorcycles are manufactured in Jiangamen City.
Nice new factories and family owned factories
abound. State Owned Enterprises are being privatized with
care.
Motorcycles Abound
Ms. Tang isa Motorcycle Momma. Her family owns a new
Honda automobile, too.Ms. Tang introduced me as
“Grandfather Christmas.” Students called to me as I
walk on campus.
Management School
Sixty-three School of Management faculty
share the Ma Lan Fang building.
Ms. Li and Ms. Tang decided they are my
Chinese Daughters. Their time is precious as they
teach a full load and publish research as well.
Help with research design was most appreciated.
Lectures with Ms. Tang
Ms. Tang and I present How Wall Street Works and
The World is Flat to fourth year students.
There are 85 students in each class. Personal
sound systems help us save our voices.
Lectures with Ms Li
Ms. Li and I present The American Business
Lunch and The World is Flat to international marketing students.
Ms. Li and Ms. Tang asked me to make 10 lectures.
Team Teaching
Monitors from the Student Union
make announcements and act as liaison between students, faculty, and
administration.Monitors are especially
useful in an emergency.
China is Under Construction
Old housing
is being rapidly replaced.
Old homes are
picturesque, but
unpleasant.
Construction cranes
are called the national bird.
Chinese Homes
Most people live in high rise condominiums.
There are elevators if a building is more than 10
stories high. Many buildings are only 8
stories high. Many of our Chinese colleagues are in
excellent condition.
Ms. Li’s Home
Children’s Day at Ms Li’s
Ms. Li is a first-year Lecturer with a
Master’s Degree. It will take five years of her salary to pay for
this average size home – the same as
her first-year American
colleagues.
Chinese Medicine
Registered nurses have a degree from an
intensive three-year in-length program.
Chinese medicines
are made on Site.
There is scientific proof acupuncture reduces pain, but I still think
Dr. Effland is very brave.
Zilli Village
End of the dynasty in 1911 made life dangerous.
Overseas Chinese sent money to their home villages. Villagers built
fortresses to protect themselves from warlords and bandits.
Bars keeping
Nicole and Mackenzye in
kept bandits and warlords out.
The Symposium
Professor Yiding Lee discussed China’s Cultural Traditions and
the Great Inertia. To land a good job one had to do well on the
national examinations. Math and science were not included on
the tests so they were ignored for hundreds of years.
Dinner in the Park
Mr. WU Rongzhi, a Hong Kong worthy and his
daughter who graduated from Rutgers University,
invited us to dinnerand to his private garden.According to Ms. Wu, Mr. Wu considers his park to be his “fourth daughter.”
Mr. Wu Arranged Entertainment
Traditional
Chinese music
has a beauty
all its own.
Mesa Ladies Honored Mr. Wu
Nicole Gavinssings the Mariah Carey song,
Hero.Garnet Lashley sings the Billie
Holiday Song, God Bless the Child.
Mr. WU was honored. This was the first time guests sang for
him.
Retired Persons Enjoy Life
Retired ladies meet each morning and perform Taichi.
Many people exercise on their own each morning.
The four distinguished ladies in white retired from the
President’s Office.
Faculty retire at 60.
Hong Kong is Wonderful
Kindergarten
Kindergarten teachers use song, dance and performance to
help children learn.
Kindergarten is from
ages 2 to 6.
Children love to perform, love their teachers and love
school.
Teachers complete a two year program that emphasizes
performing arts.
The Chinese Love Their Children Too.
Everywhere we went the message was always
the same.The quest for Harmony
underlies everything Wuyi University did for its
Maricopa Community Colleges VIP Guests.
