Dear ReadersDear ReadersDear ReadersDear Readers

Welcome to issue 39.Welcome to issue 39.Welcome to issue 39.Welcome to issue 39.I do hope you have all had a good Christmas and New Year.

I guess many of us approach a new year with some good intentions - even ifonly to do such mundane jobs as to clear out the attic or even to tidy up thekitchen clutter. Speaking of kitchens, please see page 25. I am delightedDream Doors have arrived in Thatcham - they certainly give me the impressionthat, although they are a new business, they are going to make quite a mark inChapel Street. It is good to see new life at that end of the street!

You will see various advertisements which may make you think of the type ofthing you would like to consider at the start of the New Year: perhaps it is tohave a family portrait photographed by a professional - or to smarten up yourbathroom. No doubt there will be people interested in taking more exercise - orperhaps seeking expert help with stress problems. It is that time of year whenwe take stock and resolve to find new ways forward.

Just as I was prepared to go to print, I received a press release from ThatchamTown Council. You will see it on page 61. Please do take a moment to readthis page. (I have dropped the Handy Numbers page to accommodate this). Ifeel you will agree that it is lovely to have the opportunity to nominate someonespecial who you think does something amazing for Thatcham’s Community. Our next issue should be out just before Easter and you will see on page 59details of the Easter Egg Hunt at Highclere Castle in aid of Naomi House. Domake a note in your diary of this - it promises to be a fun day out.

May I remind you that when you use an advertiser in the magazine, that yousay you saw it in Thatcham Connections! This is really important - thank you.

Warmest good wishes

NEXT ISSUE - COVERING April - May 2013 Copy - ready for print - deadline 8th January at the latest.

P.S A little update: starting at the head of the household, DH (darling husband)has been shamed (partially) into doing a little bit more of the cooking. As wemean to start the way we mean to go on, I have told him that too many ‘ready-mades’ (see p35) are not allowed - so we shall see! DD gave us a lovelyChristmas meal - great treat. DS is enjoying less heat in the Middle East atpresent - the temperature has dropped down to the 70’s - the perfect time tovisit, I feel!

Seona Myerscough of Gardner Leader SolicitorsSeona Myerscough of Gardner Leader SolicitorsSeona Myerscough of Gardner Leader SolicitorsSeona Myerscough of Gardner Leader Solicitorsdiscusses online divorce and your options.discusses online divorce and your options.discusses online divorce and your options.discusses online divorce and your options.

There has been a lot in the media recently about theeffects of separation on couples and the fact that in theeconomic climate that we find ourselves in it isincreasingly difficult to separate and divorce, becausethe family assets are already stretched to provide onehome let alone two homes, and the cost of the divorceitself is prohibitive.

Further, Legal aid is being removed from the divorceprocess in April 2013 except for in very limitedcircumstances involving domestic violence, meaningthat there will be even more people who are unclearwhere to turn when they want a divorce.

There are now a lot of services that people can haveaccess to if they feel that they can sort out their owndivorce. I would recommend the www.gov.uk website asan excellent starting point, our own websitewww.gardner-leader.co.uk and there are now evenApps that you can utilise on your smart phone.

However, it is important to be wary, there are somepitfalls. You do need to know what you are entitled to

before you reach agreements on finances or the children. You need to know what the grounds are for divorce andthe facts that you need to support your divorce. You maydo your own research and work this out, you may justknow what agreements you want to reach, but if you haveany doubt I would recommend visiting a qualified familysolicitor for an initial interview to be given direction and anunderstanding of your rights and responsibilities postseparation. Knowledge is a very valuable commoditywhen considering what you are prepared to agree to.

However, once armed with knowledge and if you feelconfident to negotiate or to use a mediator then if you areable to agree on

• the reasons for a divorce• how you’ll look after the children ( if any)• how you’ll split up money, property and

possessions

Then you can consider undertaking the divorce yourself. However, it is still very daunting to go on line and justchoose a service. You could base it solely on price, butthat is not the arbiter on quality. If the process is not clearthen you may be wasting your money, and having to visita solicitor to sort out the mess, which will cost moremoney in the long run.

We have now decided to meet this need by providing anon line divorce service ourselves.

This service is supported by a fully qualified lawyer, notan administrative assistant or someone based elsewhere,so you can be assured that a member of our team will beable to help you. You know where are offices are andtherefore we are not a nameless agency,. There is a realperson in a real office that you can phone. We recommend that you go onto our page on the websiteand check this out for yourself. There are a few simplequestions to answer, which will determine whether theonline service is suitable for you. You might also decidethat you would like to attend for a fixed fee interview andmake direct face to face contact with us and then utilisethe on line service after discussing your needs.

For more information regarding Gardner Leaders Familyservices please contact Seona Myerscough on 01635508080.

• Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially ifcooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa,Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some ofthe tastiest steamers.

• Just the thought of new potatoes dripping inchives and butter is wonderful; again these arebest when freshly harvested. Try Lady Christl,Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine andNicola.

• If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce,Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and KingEdward.

• If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then tryCara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, KingEdward, Desiree and Valor.

• For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper,Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue.

• For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward,Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue.

Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to beharvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if you have a newlycreated vegetable plot, especially if the soil has notbeen cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ will be inthe ground for less time than main crops and are lesslikely to suffer from wire-worm attack. These small, slim gingery coloured larvae are the young stage ofthe click beetle and cause infuriating tunnelling in thetubers’ flesh. If garden space is an issue, ‘earlies’ are useful asthey takes less space and are in the ground for ashorter period, giving you the opportunity to growanother fast-maturing crop such as lettuce or saladleaves after the potatoes have been lifted.

February is the time of year to think aboutperfect potatoes and smashing spuds so makesure you buy some seed potatoes and havethem ready for planting. Home grown potatoesare an incredibly good value crop and you’llsoon find that the so-called humble spud isactually a very tasty and extremely versatilevegetable.

If you don’t have much spare space in your garden, apatio or balcony will do as a 45cm (18in) diameter potcan produce a useful crop of spuds, just from a singletuber. Make sure the container is well supplied withdrainage holes (add a layer of ‘crocks’ if necessary),fill it about two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber inthe centre and add a further couple of inches ofcompost. As the foliage appears, add more compostto cover it over and repeat until no more can beadded. Keep the container well watered, then sitback and wait. Use a bigger container, such as oneof the Stewart Smithy pots and you can plant threetubers however don’t be tempted to overload your potwith too many tubers or you’ll end up with much lessimpressive results. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier andsomewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes areallowed to ‘chit’ or produce small but sturdy sproutsbefore planting. Stand the tubers widest enduppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and placethese in a cool but frost free spot with plenty ofnatural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will beabout 1cm tall, perfect for planting. Buy your seedpotato tubers this month and you’ll have time to chitthem before planting.

The so-called humble spud is actually a very tastyand extremely versatile vegetableWhat to Grow:What to Grow:What to Grow:What to Grow:Different potatoes have different issues in the kitchenand whilst I have my favourite, the new potato called‘Charlotte’, I do grow others for their different cookingqualities:

No crop is without its share of problems and potatoblight is the most infamous potato disease. Thefungus responsible is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. It has the potentialto kill off the growing plants and may even infect thetubers. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight andyou can also select varieties which show resistanceto the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleenand especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona.Slugs can also be a real menace, tunnelling into thetubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them outcompletely. Try growing Cara, Desiree and Sante.‘Earlies’ are likely to suffer less damage as they arenot in the soil for so long. The biological controlnematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife.

work. Very similar to our bodies... we needideally complex carbohydrates as fuel for energyand movement; quality proteins to keep ourmuscles strong, make key hormones andenzymes; ’good fats’ and oils to keep our jointssupple and skin smooth; and a consistent intakeof vitamins and minerals, to enable these vitalprocesses to work well within our amazing body.

As most of us know, we should definitely reducecaffeine, alcohol, sugar, table salt, fizzy drinkswhite bread and ready made meals. Healthieralternatives are: herbal teas and coffees, wholemeal or rye bread and 100% juices. Stir frysare generally better than ready-mades and theyare quick and easy to cook. Have a look on theinternet - there are lots of ideas. It may also bethat you need to increase your water intake. If youfeel the real need for an alcoholic drink, thenremember to drink the same amount of water torehydrate the body.

One piece of good news though is that you areallowed - in moderation of coarse - cubes of darkchocolate or chocolate coated brazil nuts!

So reward yourself with a brazil nut or two - or asquare or two of dark chocolate.

And keep going - you’re doing great!

We can all feel de-motivated at times, so ifJanuary has passed you by without starting any ofthose resolutions, turn February into the monthyou take some positive steps to regain control.

Motivation is key to our creativity, productivity andhappiness. When we are motivated we feel wecan take on any challenge, meet any deadlineand work through any problem to achieve ourgoal. Give yourself a weekly target - perhapslosing 3 lbs. Then when you have done this, congratulate yourself on the achievement.

A good motivator is other people. If you tell peoplethat you’re going to try to alter your lifestyle a littleand eat more healthily from now on, you are morelikely to keep to your plan.

How many times do you find yourself saying ‘Ican’t do it’, ‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s too hard’?Negative thoughts can really bring you down, sogive yourself a buzzword or mantra to repeat: ‘Icancancancan do it and I amamamam doing it’.

We strive to provide long term and regular fun experiences wherethe children have close contact with nature and have the time, freedom and space to explore the changing world around them.

At Jubilee we have a fantastic learning resource of our own private woodlandarea ‘Roughwood’. A short walk from the nursery, the young children havetime to trundle through the paddocks, spotting bugs and insects, collectingtreasures such as feathers, seed pods, golden leaves and sticks - plus theyhave the added advantage of visiting the farm animals along the way. Thepractitioners extend the experience by singing songs, playing games andre-enacting much loved stories such as ‘We Are Going On a Bear Hunt’.

As children grow, they begin to demonstrate independence andgain an increased awareness of the consequences of their ownactions - for example when paddling in the stream, they leanto negotiate and plan ways to cross without getting wet.

No matter what the weather or season,we try to spend as much time as possiblewith the children playing outside.

Learning naturally....Jubilee Day Nursery is passionate about theoutdoors. With access to over 40 acres of privatewoodland, paddocks and gardens, we provideinspirational opportunities for the childrento achieve and develop confidence throughhands-on learning outside of the ‘class room’.

Through watching their friends and through team activities, such as building a den, children learn to sharetools, participate in taking turns and supporting each other. Because the children use all their senses, they learn to express themselves and develop a keen awareness as to what is going on around them. Thechildren become fascinated by what they are doing and can concentrate intently for much longer than ina normal indoor environment. They take a keen interest in their natural surroundings, learn respect for theenvironment and they begin to notice how different trees and plants change over the seasons and years.

To enhance these experiences, Emma Hirst (pictured above) is currently studying towards her‘Forest School’ qualification. The philosophy of Forest School teaching shares the goals andunderpins the principals of the Early Years Foundations Stage. These skills linked to the EYFSwill enable our team to further the children’s rich outdoor learning experiences everyday.

If you would like your child to be part of this unique learning experience, orwould like to come and explore Roughwood for yourself please do not hesitate

in contacting us on 0118 970 1600 we have planned walks toRoughwood for children and grownups every Wednesday afternoons.

So why not come along and join us?
