So Long…Farewell…We Hate to See You Go

Well wishes go to Gary Cole, USFS. Garyretired in August 2004 and has transitionedfrom being on the “trash team” to becoming avolunteer for the program! We hope Garyenjoys his retirement and doesn’t work toohard (unless it’s picking up trash).

We’ve updated the Adopt-a-Forest Guide to includethis important message under the Safety section. Thanks to Don Mikel, USFS, for thinking of these.

Driving

Drive safely. There is no hurry when working oncleanups. Heavy loads may cause your vehicle tohandle differently than normal. These loads will alsoincrease braking distances. Loosely loaded objects mayshift in turns. Unsecured debris may blow out of thevehicle while driving. We want to collect trash, notredistribute it.

Fire Hazard

Be aware of current fire danger conditions. Always becareful with smoking. Fully extinguish and properlydispose of your cigarettes. Also remember that sparksfrom mufflers and excessive heat from your vehicle'sundercarriage could ignite a fire in dry conditions.

If you’re interested in finding out where trash hasbeen illegally dumped in your area, want to report asite you found, or just want program information, visit the website at www.cleanforests.org

Look under Interactive, and Search DumpsiteDatabase, and you can search for your county, township, type of trash, road names, etc.

If you look at Crawford County, you’ll see that thesites have been GPS’d! This is in an attempt tointegrate GPS coordinates into our program toaccommodate our high-tech volunteers such as theMichigan GeoCaching Organization and CampGrayling and to make reporting dump sites easierfor field officers and folks who own GPS units.

Michigan is blessed with many lakes and rivers...

These waterways will be freezing soon and becoming “towns” of fishshanties and snowmobiles. Please remember to keep our bottomlandsclean by removing all litter when you leave the ice. Keep trash bags on-hand and remind your friends who enjoy winter sports to do the same!

Our dumpsite database has beenvery successful. Reports of new sites found onpublic land are received almost daily. Nearly25% of all sites reported are cleaned up byvolunteers and community service workerswithin one year.

Many volunteers are not familiar with the areathey work in.

When reporting trash sites on public land, it isimportant that you include good drivinginstructions from a main road. Helpfulinformation includes:

· Detailed driving instructions · County ·· Township · Legal Description ·· Type of trash · Amount of trash (truckloads) ·· GPS coordinates (if known) ·
