A message from our president... We live during a very divisive period in our history. There is much about which to disagree. Differences about our politics, our economy or our religions can lead to angry discourse, violence and even death. Relationships can be permanently destroyed because of heated and emotional conversations.

How would you feel if after making a mean and angry comment to a friend, that friend disappeared forever? These situations, as regrettable as they are, happen. We have often heard that a married couple should not go to bed angry. What if one of the two does not wake up the next day. Words said or not said could lead to a lifetime of regret. Throughout my life I have witnessed examples of lost friendships, broken marriages and severed family relationships because of angry disagreement and unkind words. This experience can happen to anyone of us. We need to realize that the best of relationships can be fragile and needs to be nurtured and protected. This is such a story. I met my best friend 65 years ago. It was a cold fall weekend day. My friend Herb, and I were playing in a construction site in our neighborhood. My friend said. “There is my older brother.” Across the field, his older brother was playing on a very large parked caterpillar. Apparently the construction crew had left the keys in the ignition. You might have guessed it. This mischievous 14 year old boy started the engine and attempted to drive it. Within moments two police cars showed up, removed him from the caterpillar and hauled him off in a police car. That is the first time I met my new best friend Philip. Over six decades, Phil, Herb and I have been best friends. Phil became like my older brother. Phil and Herb lost their father as young children and their single mom took turns with my parents carpooling us to high school football games as well as to B’nai Jehudah Religious School. At age 14 students could obtain a license to drive to school or back and forth to work. As you can imagine Phil became one of the first in his class to get a driver’s license. He became more than just our permanent Sunday school transportation. He drove Herb and me everywhere. Drive in movies, football games and long drives in the country were frequent activities. As a high school student Phil got a job selling shoes at a new shoe store in Mission, Kansas. Shortly thereafter he talked the store manager into hiring Herb and me. Our families were not well to do and all three of us needed to work. I was 14 and just over five feet tall and Phil taught me how to sell shoes. We would have contests as who could sell the most shoes on a weekend. On a typical workday, as part timers, the three of us would out sell all the full time regular employees. I was an incoming freshman at Missouri University, Phil was a senior and was instrumental in getting me to join his fraternity. All freshman fraternity pledges needed to be adopted by an upper-class big brother. Phil became my big brother in our college fraternity.

When I completed my tour of duty in the army, and graduate school, Phil already had a successful career with a public firm. He had a management level job and hired me in my very first entry level job. I admired Phil’s work ethic and tried to emulate it. No problem was too big to solve. After working together for a few years, Phil and I realized we would be happier as entrepreneurs. In our thirties we became business partners in three different business startups. Our friendship lasted beyond our business partnerships. And to this day, retirement has not been in our vocabulary. Even though Phil lives in another city most of the year, we have phone conversations several times a month. Shortly after the worst Jewish hate crime in American history happened in Pittsburg, Phil and I had a disagreeable phone conversation. For whatever reason I got extremely angry and lost control of my emotions and temper. Both of us were so angry at the end of the call that we did not want to talk ever again. I began to lose sleep. We have had other disagreements in our long friendship, but this was different. Perhaps because of what we are experiencing in our country today, anger seems to surface more readily. I realized that I risked losing a sixty-five year friendship with my best friend. I could not let that happen. I wrote Phil a long e-mail about what our friendship has meant to me. Within 10 minutes of sending my e-mail, he reached out to me. He said he was returning to Kansas City for Thanksgiving and wanted to have breakfast. Sheila and I were heading to St. Louis so we could not meet in person. But the next day Phil and I had an hour long phone conversation to catch up. We made a special promise to never again to jeopardize our friendship. We determined to never let a week go by without calling one another. Last week, I received a text from Phil which made no sense. I immediately called him. He texted me back. He was in ICU and could not talk. During a rare freeze in Phoenix he slipped on ice and suffered a skull fracture. Phil will recover and soon be back to his daily long walks. If I had waited until after he had an injury to call him I would have felt very shallow. How would I have felt if I lost my best friend? Our friendship is forever. As I said in the beginning friendships can be very fragile. We need to protect them and cannot allow disagreements to sever them. Friendships are so valuable and contribute to a happy, healthy life. Ken Sigman, President [email protected] 816-516-1001

Congregant Billing Schedules We have the ability to add your Terumah Commitment to your statement on an annual, semiannual, quarterly or monthly basis. Below are four examples of what a statement would look like on December 1 for a Congregant with a Total Terumah Commitment of $1,992.00 for our fiscal year (June 1 – May 31) who has selected Monthly, Quarterly, Semi Annual or Annual billing and has made payments correlating with their billing cycle.

Monthly Billing: Account Description Total Commitment Charged To Date Payments Currently Due 18/19 Terumah Contribution 1,992.00 1,162.00 996.00 166.00

Quarterly Billing: Account Description Total Commitment Charged To Date Payments Currently Due 18/19 Terumah Contribution 1,992.00 1,494.00 996.00 498.00

Semiannual Billing: Account Description Total Commitment Charged To Date Payments Currently Due 18/19 Terumah Contribution 1,992.00 1,992.00 996.00 996.00

Annual Billing: Account Description Total Commitment Charged To Date Payments Currently Due 18/19 Terumah Contribution 1,992.00 1,992.00 1,992.00 0.00

The total Commitment column is the total commitment for June 1 – May 31. The charged to Date Column is the amount that has been charged to date based on the billing cycle chosen by the Congregant:

Monthly Billing: 1/12th of the total commitment is added to the charged to date column on the first of each month.

Quarterly billing: A quarter of the total commitment is added to the charged to date column on June 1, September 1, December 1, March 1.

Semiannual Billing: Half the total commitment is added to the charged to date column on June 1 and December 1 Annual billing: the total commitment for the fiscal year is added to the charged to date column on June 1.

The Payment column is the total payments applied to the Commitment. The Currently due column is the Charged to Date column less the payments column.

For Congregants who choose monthly billing and send monthly payments the currently due column will show one month’s commitment each month.

Building Renovation Commitments can also be billed on either an annual, semi-annual, quarterly or monthly basis. For building commitments that are will be paid over multiple fiscal years only the amount for the current fiscal year will be included on the statement. For instance, if the pledge is $1,870 to be paid over two years beginning December, 2018 the following amount would appear on your December 1, 2018 statement:

Monthly billing: Account Description Total Commitment Charged To Date Payments Currently Due Renovation Campaign 18/19 934.98 155.83 0.00 155.83

Rabbi Stephen A. Karol

—a 1966 B’nai Jehudah Confirmand—is Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Isaiah in Stony Brook, New York. His parents Ruth and Joe were very involved in our congregation, especially in Sisterhood and Brotherhood.

Stephen graduated from Center High School in 1968, from the University of Wisconsin in 1972, and was ordained at the Hebrew Union

College in Cincinnati in 1977. He has served at Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo, New York, Congregation Sha’aray Shalom in Hingham, Massachusetts, and Temple Isaiah. He teaches at Temple Isaiah and also at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Stony Brook University. Rabbi Karol lives in Port Jefferson Station, New York with his wife Donna.

We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Karol. Please join us on Friday, March 8, 6:00 pm (Bisseleh Nosh, 5:30 pm) to welcome him and hear him speak about his recently published book, Finding Hope and Faith in the Face of Death: Insights of a Rabbi and Mourner.
