“Facing History and Ourselves has become a standard

for ambitious and courageous programming . . . .

At a time when more and more of our population are

ignorant about history, and when the media challenge

the distinction between truth and fiction–indeed, the

to be the standard.”

A MESSAGE FROM MARGOt StERn StROMKlARMAn FAMily EXECUtiVE DiRECtOR

The need for Facing History and Ourselves today

is greater than I ever imagined when we began

our journey 36 years ago. Turn on the TV, pick up

a newspaper, or enter a chat room and you will

quickly discover that ethnic and religious violence

is brewing around the world. Almost everywhere,

the realities of history are denied in favor of ro-

manticized narratives. Many people feel discon-

nected globally; and in many places, students are

dropping out of school even as talented teachers

are leaving the profession. Too many children in

too many parts of the world have come to believe

This has been an extraordinary year for Facing

History and Ourselves and in my life as I took

on the role of chair of the Board of Directors. I

have the privilege of working with exceptional

organizational leaders, including Seth Klarman

and Dana Smith in leading our Board of Trustees,

and Kwame Anthony Appiah as chair of the Board

of Scholars. I am especially pleased that Margot

Stern Strom is the inaugural Klarman Family

Executive Director, and I join the many members

of the Facing History family in applauding her

leadership.

A MESSAGE FROM tRACy PAlAnDJiAnCHAiR, BOARD OF DiRECtORS

As board members, we must continue to harness and direct our collective energies

to advance Facing History’s mission and growth. Meeting the ever-growing demand

for Facing History’s transforming educator and student strategies requires all of us

to understand deeply the individual and global impact of our choices as members

of Facing History’s volunteer leadership. We must be good stewards, we must be

educated about the content, and we must work as a board to raise the funds and

build knowledge of our organization. We must also continue to build volunteer

leadership for the future, and I am encouraged by the exceptional and growing

strength and depth on our advisory boards and boards of directors and trustees.

Our annual report is a moment to recognize our philanthropic and organization-

al achievements, and I take special note of the endowment effort to fund the

Klarman Family Executive Director, so ably co-chaired by Richard Perry and Bill

Poorvu. I extend heartfelt thanks to donors to this fund who are investing in

Facing History’s intellectual and strategic leadership.

I express my gratitude to everyone in this report, our staff, and the many people

and organizations who speak well of our work and ensure its vitality. Together, we

will continue to build a better world for the next generation.

that they don’t count. If democracy is to flourish and genocide is to be prevented,

our young people must receive the kind of education that helps them develop a

strong moral compass. If we assume that they will do so without help, we must be

held responsible when they do not.

Facing History and Ourselves is, always has been, and always will be about

communicating that big ideas matter. Our work connects intellect to compassion,

scholarship to self-reflection, a deep study of history to a deep concern for the

future. We encourage students to think more, reflect more, and feel more. And we

help them discover that the biggest idea of all is that humankind has a capacity

for both enormous evil and astonishing good.

Nothing I can write about Facing History and Ourselves can come close to the

power of the voice of a student whose mind and heart have been opened through

a Facing History class—and we reach more than 2 million students each year.

It is these students who inspire us. One former student wrote, “If one by one,

hundreds of children learn the evils of hatred in history, then learn to face and

change that history in their own world, who is to say that Facing History cannot be

a catalyst for an end to prejudice, violence, and injustice?” She understands the

need for Facing History and Ourselves to continue and grow.

We need to do this together. We are prepared to increase our impact by reaching

more teachers with our programs and resources so that their students will recog-

nize their responsibility to self and others by facing history and themselves.

Facing History’s 2012 conference, “Engaging Education: Rethinking Learn-

ing, Teaching, and Achievement in Urban Schools,” is convening practitioners,

scholars, students, and the community to examine how to create schools where all

youth can thrive.

Students in Douglass High School in Memphis, one example of a powerful elective

Facing History class, have demonstrated the positive effect of their Facing History

experience despite a challenging social and economic environment. According to

Steve Becton, senior associate for Urban Education and Organizational Initiatives

who works closely with Douglass High, these young people become engaged and

energized as they realize their ability to impact their school and their community.

The Rita Allen Foundation has made a leader-

ship commitment to Facing History’s program in

urban education. With the Foundation’s support

and that of the Memphis endowment donors,

Facing History has launched its Urban Civic

Learning Lab in Memphis, Tennessee.

Elizabeth Good Christopherson, the foundation’s

president and chief executive officer, said, “Fac-

ing History’s approach guides students through

the lessons gathered from the past to a new

language and interactions, and perspectives that

help young people face the ethical and practi-

cal decisions we are confronted with in today’s

society.”

In 2007, a group of Facing History board members and friends led by Anla Cheng

Kingdon with Cecilia Chan, Michelle Koo, Tracy Palandjian, Michael Tse, Charlene

Wang, Shirley Wang, and the China Project Committee, began to work with staff to

investigate how we might expand our international reach to China in response to

interest from teachers and scholars within our network. The China Project was the

result. A robust effort to promote deeper cross-cultural understanding of history is

bringing a better understanding of Chinese history to U.S. classrooms, while work

with educators in China introduces Chinese youth to Facing History and Ourselves:

Holocaust and Human Behavior and related resources.

The China Project Committee has supported the project with funding, introduc-

tions in China, and guidance on offering an Asian-Pacific perspective to our work.

A substantial resource on the history and legacy of the Nanjing Massacre in China

in 1937 is being developed. Dimitry Anselme, Facing History’s lead in China,

allow us to complicate our understanding of how

issues of ideology, group identity, nationalism,

and colonialism influenced Asia and the Pacific

region.”

Chicago sponsor Aon Corporation, and as part of

the five-city tour funded by The Walmart Foun-

dation, Facing History and Ourselves’ nationally

acclaimed multimedia exhibition, Choosing to

Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr., and the George Washington Institute for Religious

Freedom have made a leadership commitment to Facing History for an exciting

three-year project that explores the history and legacy of George Washington’s

1790 Letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island. A signal

moment in the history of religious freedom, Washington’s Letter promises that the

government of the United States would “give to

bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

In it, Washington defined freedom of religious

choosing To parTicipaTe: engaging sTudenTs and The communiTy

belief as an “inherent natural right.”

Washington was writing in response to a message

from Moses Seixas, warden of Newport’s Hebrew

Congregation. Seixas’s address reflected the fear

of religious persecution that remained a force in

the lives of Jews and other religious minorities.

Washington’s Letter made clear that minorities

should have nothing to fear from government

authorities.

bullying, hate, and bigotry. . . . This is civic involvement and civic education at

its best.”

Each host city developed major outreach initiatives that engaged students and

teachers, supporters and friends, to maximize the exhibition’s impact. The host

cities also produced local installations reflecting the exhibition’s themes.

Chicago’s initiative was developed with the exemplary leadership of spring 2012

benefit dinner Co-Chairs Greg Case, James Reynolds, and Albert R. Grace, Jr.,

of Loop Capital Markets; Advisory Board Chair Jill Garling; Honorary Chair Mayor

Rahm Emanuel; and a stellar group of area volunteers. The exhibit was a central

component of Now Is The Time, a series of workshops, performances and online

opportunities facilitated by Facing History, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and

the Chicago Public Library funded by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur

Foundation.

Choosing to Participate was presented with great success in fall 2011 in Memphis

in partnership with the Memphis Public Library and Honorary Chairs Mayor Mark

Luttrell and Mayor AC Wharton. The National Honorary Advisory Committee for

Choosing to Participate includes filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Congressman John

Lewis, and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor among others who have made significant

contributions to strengthening civic life.

democracy. Washington’s Letter defines what citizenship means to ethnic and

immigrant groups that may be new to this country or different from the majority in

their religious beliefs.”

As we bring together scholars with diverse perspectives on the Washington Letter

and encourage students and teachers to respond to its themes, we will develop

lesson plans, hold workshops and community events, and collect written materials

to be published in a resource book that showcases the Washington Letter and dia-

logue about pluralism and democracy. “The story of the Washington Letter opens

a powerful window into U.S. history that resonates with teachers and students as

they consider what it means to participate in a democracy,” says Adam Strom,

Facing History’s chief officer for Content and Innovation.

2012 GIFT REpORT

susTaining gifT program

For more than three decades, Facing History has engaged students in

the study of history and ethical decision-making in order to teach civic

responsibility, tolerance, courage, and compassion. With increasing

demand from schools and teachers, and impact data that demonstrates

the continued effectiveness of our work, Facing History depends on the

increased investment of annual support from leadership donors to reach

more students each year.

Facing History and Ourselves’ Sustaining Gift Program has grown

to include 94 families, foundations, and corporations. These major

commitments are the cornerstone of our work and program planning.

a message from usha pasichief developmenT officer

Dear Friends,

Giving to Facing History reached a record level in fiscal year 2012. In addition to receiving the largest commitment in our history, the number of donors reached an all-time high, and we were honored to meet the Memphis Challenge through an extraordinary response from donors. We continue to fund the majority of our operating budget with gifts and grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations, and we are indebted to every donor for their belief in the effectiveness and importance of Facing History.

Each of you stopped to think about the critical relationship between education and civil society this year; you gave of your time and resources; and you brought new friends to Facing History and Ourselves. You understand the importance of Facing History’s work, and you are helping to build a global society that links a deep and rigorous understanding of history to a future defined by thoughtful, compassionate choices and civic participation.

Multiyear commitments and annual gifts of $100,000 or more are

recognized in the Sustaining Gift Program. This list reflects commitments

or gifts received from July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2012.

Facing History is able to use all available funding to bring programs to

teachers and students in part because of the generous in-kind gifts and

pro bono professional services donated by our friends and supporters.

Corporate donors of in-kind gifts and services are listed on page 26, and

we are grateful for their generous support. Board and committee members

and other volunteers in Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, London, Los Angeles,

Memphis, New England, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto,

and the international community contribute countless volunteer hours,

and we are most grateful to them. Here, we thank individuals who have

donated their professional time, home or office space, or gifts of artwork,

equipment, or supplies.

remembrance socieTy

In 1994, two wonderful friends and board members of Facing History,

Sandra and Philip Gordon, started the Remembrance Society, a group of

supporters who have chosen to make planned gifts to Facing History and

Ourselves. To date, more than 100 individuals and families—including

board members, staff, new friends of the organization, and even a student

from the very first Facing History classroom—have joined the Gordons

by including Facing History in their estate plans. We are extraordinarily

grateful to these individuals for their kindness to Facing History.

Members of the Remembrance Society are recognized in the

Remembrance Society Honor Roll in the Annual Report. Those who wish

to have their estate plans remain confidential are listed anonymously.

We appreciate knowing an individual’s intentions so that we can

provide Remembrance Society updates and reports and can extend our

appreciation privately.

For more than 35 years, Facing History has been an invaluable resource

for educators nationally and internationally. It is clear that the need for

our programs—and the interest in them—is expanding.

With careful planning, your estate can provide for loved ones and

continue to benefit Facing History and Ourselves. Members of the

Remembrance Society may include Facing History and Ourselves in

their estate plans through the following vehicles: bequests, charitable

remainder trusts, life insurance gifts, and retirement plan assets.

If you would like more information about planned giving opportunities

and how to become a member of the Remembrance Society, please

contact the Development Office at +1-617-735-1603 (U.S. and Canada)

or (011) 617-735-1603 (outside the United States).

“Students get hooked by Facing History. They start to see that history doesn’t just happen, that it occurs because of actions people like themselves decide to take.” - teacher

14,000 students and 600 teachers heard firsthand

accounts from individuals who lived through the Holocaust and

other witnesses to history through our survivor network.

Facing History engaged almost 4,000 educators in a host

of online professional development this year as we continued

expanding our online educational presence.

We have trained and supported over 5,000 educators from

countries outside the United States ranging from Albania to

Zambia. The Edmond J. Safra Foundation has provided leader-

ship support of the annual international seminar in London.

We distributed more than 25,000 published resources

this year, doubling our total for fiscal year 2011.

115,000 people, including students and teachers, visited

our multimedia exhibit Choosing to Participate in Memphis,

Tennessee, in the fall of 2011. The exhibit is being present-

ed in Chicago in fall 2012. Since 1998, the exhibit has trav-

eled to nine American cities, reaching more than 500,000

people thanks to the support of The Walmart Foundation, its

national sponsor, and all of our funders and volunteers.

financial sTaTemenTs: Treasurer’s reporT

Fiscal year 2012 was another monumental year for Facing History.

In the year that ended June 30, 2012, Facing History continued the

strong financial operating performance of the last several years and also

received significant gifts, specifically earmarked for its endowment.

A healthy revenue pipeline, increased market penetration, and strong

demand for Facing History’s services led to an increased annual budget,

from $17.85M in FY11 to $21.5M in FY12, enabling the organization to

further invest in the excellence and reach of its programs and the services

it provides to teachers and students. Thanks to the generosity of our loyal

supporters and the increase in number of new donors, Facing History

again was able to conclude the year with a modest operating surplus.

LED BY SIGNIFICANT OPERATING AND ENDOWMENT GIFTS, FACING

HISTORY RAISED A RECORD $30.6M IN SUPPORT AND REVENUE.

Since 2001, Facing History has averaged a 2.6% surplus from

operations, while growing the operating budget from $9.7M to $21.5M.

In FY12, Facing History secured $30.6M in Total Support and Revenue,

thanks to significant contributions received in honor of Seth Klarman,

co-chair of the Board of Trustees, which enabled Facing History to

increase Permanently Restricted contributions to $9.3M in FY12.

Additionally, unrestricted contributions, which comprise an important

part of the organization’s operating budget, increased by 30% from

$7.2M to $9.3M. Facing History’s three sources of non-philanthropic

revenue—Fees, Sales, and Investment Income—increased 34% to $2M.

The only revenue line item to decline from FY11 to FY12 was Temporarily

Restricted contributions, from $14.6M to $9.2M.

OUR SUCCESS AT RAISING MULTIYEAR GRANTS AND PLEDGES

ENABLED FACING HISTORY TO ENTER FY12 WITH 42% OF THE

ORGANIZATION’S EXPENSE BUDGET COVERED.

During FY12, previously secured multiyear pledges and grants made

a significant contribution to our ability to deliver programs and serve

teachers and students. Thanks to the dedication of our donors making

multiyear commitments, the percentage of total expenses covered by

funds secured in prior years has averaged between 40% and 47% over

the last several years.

These accomplishments allow Facing History to achieve greater impact

and scale while simultaneously increasing our financial stability and

resilience to market risk. Securing multiyear commitments plays a vital

role in both strategies, which were critically important for Facing History

in 2012 due to our significant budget increase; multiyear commitments

provide us with additional confidence that we can successfully achieve

Facing History’s long-term programming and sustainability goals.

FACING HISTORY INCREASED ITS NET ASSETS TO $47M AT THE END

OF FY12.

In FY12, Total Assets increased 17% from $41.2M to $48.2M. This

increase was largely driven by the significant new contributions to Facing

History’s endowment, as well as by positive investment returns. In total,

Investments increased 59% from $13.8M to $21.9M. Pledges and

Grants Receivable decreased 0.8% from $21.6M in FY11 to $21.4M in

FY12. Cash and Cash Equivalents decreased from $2.9M from $2.3M. In

total, Cash and Unrestricted Investments at the end of FY12 represented

5.9 months of Operating Expenses, compared to 6.45 months of Operating

Expenses at the end of FY11. In addition to Facing History’s Unrestricted

Investments, the organization’s Restricted Endowment increased 86%

from $7.7M at the end of FY11 to $14.3M at the end of FY12.

At FY12 year-end, Facing History’s board chose to take advantage of

the organization’s strong financial position and pay down the outstanding

balance of a bank loan secured for building renovations. Removing this

loan, which had been valued at $944K at the end of FY11, was primarily

responsible for reducing Total Liabilities in FY12 from $1.5M to $960K.

Total Net Assets increased 19.3% from $39.6M in FY11 to $47.3M

in FY12 [see below]. This increase resulted from an 80.7% increase in

Permanently Restricted Net Assets and a 9.6% increase in Unrestricted

Net Assets. Temporarily Restricted Net Assets declined 13.9%.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, I want to

once again thank the members of the Finance Committee and the Audit

Committee, and both the management and staff of Facing History, for all

their hard work, unwavering support, and continued commitment to our

organization’s long-term financial sustainability and success.

Facing History and Ourselves acknowledges with great sadness the loss of our cherished friends and board members who passed away this year: Sally Gordon, Myra Kraft, Irving W. Rabb, and Manoog Young. We remain always grateful to have been guided by their wisdom, learning so much from each. We will continue to be enriched by the time they shared with us.
