OCTOBER 2018 WEEK 1 – TERM 4
Dear Saints Parents
Welcome back! We hope you all had a good break and are ready for the last term of 2018. There are loads of exciting events coming up this term, so keep an eye on your Saints App and calendars to make sure you don’t miss out.
Wishing you and your family a fantastic term ahead!
Thank you so much to our
Mothers who Care group for
thinking of our teachers
today and sending over a
very special tea!
We really appreciate it.
During the Michaelmas holidays four St Charles College senior teams participated in festivals, the U14As,
the U14Bs, the Colts and the 1st XI.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend was the 1st XI’s win over St Stithians, arguably one of the best
school boy 1st XI’s in the country. Wessly Madhevere and Clive Madande led from the front with a good
combination of power hitting and running between the wickets. The Saints target of 175 for 5 was always
going to be tough to chase with the quality and variation of the Saints bowling attack. In the end the Saints
from PMB prevailed by 66 runs.
The U14As participated in the Independent Schools Cricket Festival hosted by Hilton College, the team
played all games on home turf, and the weekend started with an intriguing draw against St Stithians.
The team played four games, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2. The highlight of the weekend was no
doubt the exciting win against St Johns College, an excellent fielding and bowling display by the team
ensured the 3 run win. Sam Ndlovu was the team’s standout bowler during the festival and was unlucky not
to have picked up a five wicket haul. Nathan Buhr and Jason Muirhead were the team’s leading batsmen.
The U14B team played in the Shaun Pollock Festival hosted by Northwood. It was a tough festival for the
boys as 3 of the 4 games were against other schools ‘A’ teams. The boys learnt a lot and have realised the
importance of batting out the allocated overs. The team narrowly lost to Queens College and Hillcrest
Curro. Tom Freese was the team’s leading batsman and Devaj Maharaj the team’s standout bowler.
The Colts team, made up mainly of U16 and U15 boys were in a similar position to the U14B team as they
played many teams that consisted of U17 boys. The team beat the Michaelhouse team and had a
well-played draw against St Johns. Hayden Raw and Alex Pattullo were consistently good with the bat, and
the innings of the weekend belonged to Andrew Beyrooti for scoring 76 not out in the win against
Michaelhouse. The bowlers learnt quickly that a bad ball was often punished and hit for a boundary.
With some 16 matches played over the holiday period the Saints teams look forward to the first round of
fixtures this term against Michaelhouse. – Mr Robbie Coutts

The St Charles College Indoor Centre has
recently undergone a major upgrade in order
to transform it into one of the premier school
boy basketball courts in the country.
The roof has been sealed using Eco-Insulate
which waterproofs it and reduces the
ambient temperature in the venue by up to
20%. The court has been centralised and
new stands have been introduced to
increase the seating capacity substantially.
In addition, new hoop structures have been
installed that lower from the roof. This
means that, with the flick of a switch and
they can be pulled up into the roof structure
– out of the way. Carpets have also been
purchased to place on the basketball court
for special functions.
The venue now lends itself to the writing of
examinations, cultural performances,
Speech Night, art exhibitions and some of
the best school boy basketball in the country. – Mr Darren Holcomb
During the holidays, both the U10A team and the U11A team played in various cricket festivals.
The U10As travelled to Clifton Nottingham Road. In their first game against St John's from
Johannesburg, the Saints boys scored 124 for 3 in their 20 overs. Thando Zama top scored with
38 not out and Tristin Delvin scored 37 not out. In an exciting finish, the Prep boys restricted their
opposition to 120 for 4 in the 20 overs. SCC U10As won by 4 runs.
On the final morning of the festival the Saints U10s restricted their opponents to 76 for 9 in the
allotted overs. The SCC boys then made light work of the chase to win by 8 wickets. Tyler van
Greunen scored 42 not out in the run chase.
The U11As travelled up to Hillcrest to play in the Mynahs T20 festival. In a tough group, the SCC
boys played some excellent cricket, winning 5 out of 6 matches which saw them finishing 2nd in
their pool.

school proud both on and off the field. – Mr Chad Barron
RUGBY 7s
Well done to Matthew Urquhart
who played for the Sharks U13
Rugby 7s team that went on to
win the Provincial tournament
during the holidays.
‘Matat2Pont’ Well done to Jack Mackenzie (Grade 9) who recently took part in
Matat2Pont – a three day Enduro motorbike ride from Matatiele to Port
Edward. After the first leg of the race, Jack was sitting in 6th place out of
360 riders. By day three, and after a series of adventures (including a
frayed accelerator cable and helicopter assistance), Jack successfully
finished this exhilarating three day event.
From Sharon Mackenzie (Jack’s mom) – “Jack was one of the youngest riders
and rode like a champion. He was a fantastic ambassador for his school and
made his parents very proud for completing a very tough ride and in the words
of one of his best friends – Passion drives Greatness!”
Boarders Go Bowling To end off their third term
in Grade 8, our boarders
had a blast spending the
evening ten-pin bowling
with friends!
It has become customary on game days during the summer season to have bring and braai
facilities available at the Coach House. The intention is to create a lunch time option for all
parents and supporters to socialize in a relaxed environment on campus.
This applies mainly to teams that play all day cricket; however, parents of all teams (cricket
and basketball) are welcome to join in. Each week the Saints Sports Department will extend
the invitation to our opposition so that they can inform their parent community.
General details are as follows:
- Fires will be provided (these will be lit at approximately midday each week)
- Refreshments will be available for purchase
- SCC will provide salads, rolls and disposable plates. Please bring your own meat,
cutlery, braai tongs etc. There will be some seating but please feel free to bring your
Camp master chairs.
- Please note that the Coach House will close after lunch in accordance with the
playing times
We encourage you to join in on Saturdays and get to know the other parents in your son’s
team. We also look forward to creating a welcoming and hospitable environment on
campus for all our visitors. For parents who live further away and are not able to support
every weekend, you can follow sports updates on the twitter handle @Saints_Sport.
