Building #BookLovein the SJHS Library
through Genrefication
#BetterTogether
"With the goal of enhancing students' reading lives and growing ourreading culture here at SJHS, I researched the theory and practiceof genrefication of high school media centers. Thanks to theFoundation and this grant, we were able to reorganize all of thefiction books in the library: we sorted, color coded, labeled, andshelved them by genre."

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING"This year I've been reading books I wouldn't have read last year. I like having ten minutes to read everyday and the book carts make it easier to choose library books in the moment." --Xavier Bennett, grade12
“Thank you! It’s so much easier to choose a book now! If I want to read some sports fiction and don’tknow which one yet, I can just walk over to that section of books and browse.” --Mikaela Van Hoven, grade 11
“Before genrefication, I would often struggle to find books similar to what I knew I liked. The genreficationhelps me narrow my search to find books I enjoy.” --Justin Leany, grade 11
“It is so much easier to browse for books and find ones I might enjoy.” --Anna Miesse, grade 11
“This new organization has made finding books easier and faster. We love it!” --Jordan Moyer, grade 12
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING"Genrefication has positively impacted mystudents' ability to self-select books--especially forour reluctant readers. For example, one of mystudents this year, who at times struggles to find abook on his own, had finished the graphic novelHey Kiddo. He asked if he could head to thelibrary to find another book to read during ourindependent reading time. Within five minutes, hewas back in class with another graphic novel inhand. He showed it to me, and said he nevereven knew our library had graphic novels! Hesmiled and began reading, thrilled to continuereading another book in his new favorite genre.
Of course our library has always had graphic novels, and, of course, we've always suggested andshowed students where these novels were housed, but with our new organizational system, our studentsare able to easily find the books in the genres they are learning to love."--Tracy Becker, English Teacher
GRANT RESULTSThe organization of the high school library's fictionstacks into color-coded genres has positively impactedthe reading culture at SJHS. In a recent surveyadministered to all students,

81% of students say they enjoy reading whengiven time and choice;
98% report that they love their school library.
Additionally, library circulation has increasednearly twofold: last school year, wecirculated 5,710 books the entire school yearand this year we have circulated 9,837 booksin just the first semester.
