Dear Graduates

I want to thank you most sincerely for your contributions and support of our Alumni Annual Appeal to date.

Our students have benefitted enormously by your generosity, which has helped enhance their education and student journey while at RCSI.

This “Thank You” brochure highlights the impact that alumni support has made, in a very real and tangible way. However our work doesn’t stop here. All of these projects require ongoing annual funding, that I hope you can support. Every gift received, irrespective of size, is very much appreciated and makes a difference!.

On behalf of all of us at RCSI, I want to thank you for your continuing interest and support

With kind regards

Cathal J Kelly, CEO/Registrar, RCSI

Alumni Travel FellowshipnAwarded to: Claire O’Leary, 3rd Year, PhD Student, RCSInSupervisor: Professor John Waddington, MCT, RCSI

Claire spent three months working in the Howard Florey Neurosciences Centre, Melbourne, Australia with Professor John Drago. Her main project was to examine the behaviour phenotype across 3 mutant models of Huntington’s disease.

Claire learnt a variety of new skills including genotyping of conditional mutants, southern blots, BrDu cell proliferation assays and a place preference paradigm. These skills will be of benefit to Claire’s research group in RCSI and she says that “the results which I obtained will form a crucial part of my overall thesis and I hope to achieve a publication from this experience. I would like to thank the Alumni Fund for their generous donation for which I am very grateful. This experience has been of great benefit to my PhD and future career”

A special thank you to key supporters of RCSI Student Research Fund

Student Hardship Fund - Grant of €13,300 The aim of the Hardship Fund is to provide emergency financial assistance to those students facing extraordinary financial crises. This year we provided financial assistance to 18 students who found themselves in unexpected financial difficulties.

Student Life - Grant of €18,856 RCSI believes in providing students with the best educational experience available and that continues beyond the classroom in order to ultimately develop a well rounded individual. There are so many important facets of the wider College experience that could benefit from additional support such as: cultural societies, drama, music, sport, worship and the Students’ Union. Grants awarded included:

RCSI Students Gym - €10,000

The grant given by the Alumni Annual Fund was used to purchase new machines for the gym. This included cardiovascular equipment as well as resistance equipment. Overall the gym has seen some drastic improvements over the past two years and since the purchase of the new machines the gym is now accessible by more students.

Being able to provide a space for students to exercise in is an important part of student life. With the stresses and strains of

academic life it is nice to have a place where students can let off some steam. The benefits of undertaking physical activity are numerous and the benefits physical activity brings to study are hard to ignore. The feed back from the students has been great saying the new machines are “fantastic” and they “make it easier to get my daily dose of exercise”.

Having the additional three treadmills and replacing three others was vitally important to the students. The gym is a small facility that is now maximised to its full potential and allows our students greater access to exercise and provides them with the opportunity to keep themselves fit and healthy. So a big thank you to the Alumni Fund for providing this grant.!

RCSI Students Medical Journal - €4,356

RCSI Students Neuroscience Journal - €1,500

Margaret Hiu - €2,500

This grant assisted Margaret Hiu to perform in the World Doctors orchestra as the first violinist at the September 11th Memorial

Student Counselling & Support Service - Grant of €30,000 As students progress through RCSI many, at some time and to varying degrees, experience challenges to their well-being. The Student Welfare Office aims to assist students through college life as smoothly as possible by providing a listening and advice service, advocating on students behalf and helping them to develop the skills they need to confront these challenges.

This summer, a donation to the Alumni fund was used to assist the introduction and transition of a new Welfare officer while allowing the imminent retiring officer to remain in situ. The donation allowed the new officer commence 3 months in advance of the retirement of the outgoing Student Welfare Officer, Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Doyle, known to many graduates of the college who benefited from her guidance over the years.

Liz Doyle, with over 32 years of service with RCSI, had developed great skill and knowledge. The donation allowed the new officer to spend time with Liz to gain invaluable insight into the history of the college, an understanding of the range of clinical sites used by the college and most importantly the needs of our diverse student body. In addition it allowed time to meet and be introduced to key staff members throughout RCSI, while building a base of knowledge of student issues.

Should any Alumni ever wish to get in touch or have any questions about the work of the Student Welfare Office, please feel free to contact the new officer, Mr Aidan Healy, on [email protected].

Avril Copeland - €500

This grant assisted Avril Copeland to represent her country as part of the Irish adventure racing team who competed at the World Championships. The event took place in Castille, Northern Spain in October 2010. Avril along with her teammates Thomas Etter, Eoin Keith and Chris Caulfield participated over the 720 km challenging course which saw only five of fifty-one teams complete the adventure race.

Student Elective Fund - Grant of €14,500 In the past 18 months, the Elective Fund provided opportunities for 11 students to enrich their medical training by gaining valuable experience in relevant teaching hospitals worldwide.

Nathan Clenden undertook his elective at Duke University Hospital as a sub-intern in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Nathan said “I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. The experience has inspired me to pursue a career in Critical Care. As a sub-intern, I was immersed in every aspect of managing gravely ill patients and I acquired essential skills that I will carry with me throughout my career. I learned to work beyond what I previously thought were my physical and mental limits and I acquired a new appreciation for the poser of honesty and compassion in the face of tragedy.

“As a tertiary referral centre and level 1 trauma centre, Duke’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides the last line of defence in modern medicine for the region. I am proud to have contributed to this effort to treat people with devastating injuries and illnesses. During my elective, I

Nathan Clenden

witnessed seemingly miraculous recoveries and this experience has piqued my interest in the healing process and motivated me to seek out training to learn how to care for patients in the greatest need of medical attention. Without the RCSI Elective Found, I would not have been able to afford the tuition for this elective and I may have missed the opportunity to discover my calling in medicine.”

Daniel Fraughen undertook his elective in the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital, Kenya.

Feaghal Divily participated in an elective at North Shore, Salem, USA.

Frederick and Carl Samuel served as teaching assistants to disadvantaged children in Kenya.

Craig Delavari undertook his elective in gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, USA.

Mohammad Sarhan, Kim Caulfield, Ashley Freeman undertook their electives at Duke University, USA.

Atish Chopra conducted his elective in Surgery at Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Centre USA

Paul O’Mahoney attended Lennox Hill Hospital in the Department of Surgery for his elective. His supervisor was Dr Paresh Shah.

Library CampaignIn the past 18 months, the College has embarked on a redevelopment programme for the Mercer Library: the heart of campus life and learning. The Library Development Project is central to RCSI’s vision to provide the highest quality education and training for our students and to support lifelong learning and teamwork skills.

A comprehensive fundraising campaign led by Professor Hannah McGee, Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences has raised almost €500,000 from graduates and private donors.

We are very appreciative of the support from our alumni for this important initiative.

An array of possibilities exist for donors interested in naming opportunities in the library.
