Stewardship — Feast of Corpus Christi “They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.” (Luke 9:17) The story of the Loaves and Fishes shows us that when we share what we have, even if it doesn’t seem like that much, miracles can happen! Do not think that your gift is too small or insignificant! God blesses all the gifts we offer and makes them wondrous.

“Be doers of the Word not just hearers.” This sentence from James 1:22 came to mind repeatedly as I was preparing my last Pastor’s column for this weekend’s bulletin. Thirteen years ago, when I received word that I was becoming Pastor of St. James, several people said to me that St. James is the most beautiful parish in the diocese because of its stained glass windows, cruciform shape and historical value. Over the years I would discover its true beauty: you, the parishioners of St. James. I would discover an active parish that exemplifies James’ famous exhortation. I would encounter parishioners who cared for the sick by bringing Communion to them and spending time listening to their concerns and worries. I would come to know those who bring meals to the homebound through Meals on Wheels. I would see over a hundred families receiving food at the monthly Food

Distribution, just one of many services that our Social Outreach Committee provides throughout the year. It is amazing how many people are involved in our Bible studies, RCIA, senior activities, ushers, lectors, sacristans, servers, scouts, and our School family, especially our dedicated PTO. We are blessed with so many who come forth to volunteer for the Bazaar, Community Picnic, Country Christmas, School Auction and Fish Fry. I am always impressed by the commitment of our more than 21 ministries. Our Hispanic community is vibrant, engaged and enthusiastic in their faith. The real beauty of the parish is that you are doers; and for that, I am extremely grateful for our walking together and remain inspired by your commitment, dedication and faith. I would like to thank some people in particular who have worked alongside me over the years. To my wonderful and extremely talented staff: Rich, Kara, Duane, Chris, Peter, Jean, Ginny, Judy, Gabriella, Sigfredo, Miguel, Rick, Paul, Evelia, Llemina, Roberto and Vince, thank you. To our amazing IHM Sisters: Sr. Mary Sue, Sr. Regina, Sr. Margaret John, Sr. Helen Dolores, Sr. Melissa and Sr. Patricia, thank you for your discipleship and outstanding service to our parish, School and PREP program. Our amazing faculty and catechists bring so much to our students; I am blessed by their examples. Thank you to Dan Day, Brian Gendron, and all the members of the choir who make our services so beautiful each and every week. Our parish is financially sound because of the talented oversight of our Finance Council members, Sam Starr, Maureen Quattrocki, John Gallagher, Tom Kuehne, and Brian O’Connor; thank you for your advice and support. To Linda Doyle, DonnaMaria Duatschek, Jonie Lisbeth, John Vrablick, Art Gamotis, Teresa Matos, Diana Banister, Maureen Hannan, Anita Clark, Jean Whitesell, Sara Tindall, thank you for all that you do in so many different areas of our parish. To Deacon Jim and Nancy Fishenden, Deacon Ed and Jean Gliot, you are a blessing to Saint James and to me personally. Deacon Tom Bello, who passed away three years ago, will remain a model of joy and love. I am grateful to Judy Bello for her support and willingness to serve. To Fathers Vu, Oetjen, Ghenghan, Denis, Hoyos and Thompson: thank you for your daily witness of what it means to be a disciple of the Lord, as well as your support and service to St. James. Finally, to you, the people of St. James, it has been an honor and extreme privilege to have been your pastor. I have been inspired and humbled by your faith, witness and service to St. James. May the merciful and loving Lord continue to bless each and every one of you with His peace, good health, and abiding love. I pray that you will remember and put into practice what I have said over the years: to be a true disciple of Christ, you need to be all in. Over the last thirteen years, you all have and will continue to be, all in. ~Fr. Posey

Volunteers Needed to Count Offertory Are you good with numbers? The St. James Collection Counters are looking to add members to their team! Responsible stewardship demands that the weekly gifts from the faithful, which represent the monetary

lifeblood of the parish community, be properly safeguarded, counted, deposited, and recorded. Our Collection Counters team is a group of honest, capable, and fun individuals who share each other's company while they share the burden of offertory stewardship. If you are interested and have time available early Monday mornings, please contact Anita Clark at [email protected].

Guided Children’s Adoration With Father Oetjen—July 6 Ever want to come to Eucharistic Adoration but worried that the little ones would misbehave or be a distraction to others? Join Fr. Oetjen for a Guided Children's Adoration on the first Saturday of July at 10am. The time in adoration will be interspersed with prayers, guided meditation, sacred music, changing postures (enough to keep the young ones engaged!), and it will conclude with Benediction. All are welcome, including families and children of all ages!

Please pray for them as they help those who need their help this week, that they have a safe week (working with power tools can be hazardous), and that the experience reinforces the importance of helping and serving others.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Screening the Movie— ”Our God’s Brother” in July and August The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Queen of Peace, will be showing the movie “Our God’s Brother” at St. Ann Catholic Church, 5300 N. 10th St., Arlington. The screening will take place in Room 105/106, on Saturday, July 13, at Noon; Tuesday, July 16, at 10:00am; and Saturday, August 3, at Noon. The film tells the story of the life of St. Albert Chmielowski, Polish saint who turned away from

a career as an artist to serve God as a Secular Franciscan in 1888. He later established the Brothers of the Third Order of Saint Francis, Servants to the Poor, and spent his life helping the homeless of Poland. The film is based on the play “The Brother of Our God,” written by Karol Wojtyla, who later became St. John Paul II, when he was a young priest. Wojtyla credited St. Albert as playing a significant role in his formation because he “found in him a real spiritual support and example in leaving behind the world of art, literature, and the theater, and in making the radical choice of a vocation to the priesthood.” The movie stars Scott Wilson, of “The Walking Dead” fame, as St. Albert, and noted Austrian star, Christoph Waltz, last seen in “Alita: Battle Angel.” There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per individual, and $10.00 per family for the screening, with all proceeds going to Covenant House to help homeless youth.

Upcoming Pro-Life Ministry Activities in July The St. James Pro-Life Ministry, which meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30pm in the Knecht Conference Room (Doors 8 & 9) has a slate of activities in July which they invite you to participate in and to take a stand for life. Upcoming events are:

• July 6. First Saturday Rosary at 10:30 AM at the Falls Church abortion facility: 900 S. Washington Street,

Falls Church, VA 22046. • July 11. There is a Holy Hour the second Tuesday of every month 7:30-8:30 PM to pray for the healing

of our culture and for those who hold the secret sorrow of abortion deep within their hearts – that grace will break through. https://www.arlingtondiocese.org/healingandconversion

• July 20. Third Saturday Rosary at 9:00 AM at Landmark Towers, the busiest abortion center in the diocese: 101 S Whiting Street, Alexandria, VA 22304. The rosary follows 8:00 AM Mass at Queen of Apostles, 4401 Sano St, Alexandria, VA 22304. The Pro-Life Ministry hopes you will be able to attend one or more of these events. Patron Saints: St. Arnold of Soissons—Hops Pickers and Brewers Born in Brabant (Belgium) in 1040AD, St. Albert of Soissons, a Benedictine monk, became a priest in 1080AD and founded the Abbey of St. Peter in Oudenburg. While Abbot, Arnold and his fellow monks, brewed beer for “its gift of health,” considering beer healthier than water because the brewing process boiled out all of the water’s impurities. Arnold saved the lives of many by having the populace drink a beer, that he had blessed, during an outbreak of the plague. He was canonized on January 6, 1120. Every year on August 4, the city of Brussels, Belgium, celebrates the life of St. Arnold with a Mass and parade.
