Thank you for purchasing the Wilcom Model FR2Optical Fault Locator. The Wilcom FR2 Optical FaultLocator is a rugged, light-weight, hand-held, easy-to-use "one button" operation unit for multimode andsinglemode applications. This instrument uses patentpending OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)technology to make measurements. The FR2 is designedto pinpoint faults in an optical fiber cable, that can beover 10 kilometers distant, with amazing accuracy. Theunit operates at the industry standard wavelength of1310 nm, and can display the distance to a fault in metersor feet.

The FR2 is designed to measure the distance to fiberevents along fiber cables in optical fiber systems .Usefulapplications for the FR2 include testing: Wide AreaNetworks (WANs), telecommunication spans of up to10 kilometers, Fiber-to-the-Curb applications, installa-tion of single mode fiber cabling, and military systems.The unit is an excellent tool for locating faulty connec-tors, damaged components, bad splices and breaks insinglemode and multimode cable sections.

The FR2 has been designed with the technician in mindwith many easy to use features. It has a large LCDdisplay for viewing ease, and can be used on multimodeor singlemode cables. Its' easy "one button" operation isused for activating the unit's measure function, and theIndex of Refraction (IOR) setting can be field selectedwith the use of a single button. The FR2 is designed torecord up to seven multiple events, and display thedistance to the event(s).

The unit can be equipped with either an ST™, FC, or SCconnector that is optimized for multimode or singlemode cables. Adapter cables are available to launch intodifferent style connectors.

The FR2 is powered by four AA Alkaline batteries thatcan provide greater than 13,000 operations. An ad-vanced power supply circuit ensures maximum batterylife, and a display annunciator alerts the operator of a"low battery" condition. The auto power off circuit turnsthe unit off 5 minutes after the last reading to preservebattery power.

The FR2 has been designed using the latest state-of-the-art patent pending technology to ensure perfor-mance and reliability.

The Wilcom FR2 Fault Locator is a Class I laser productunder the requirements of both the U.S. Center forDevices and Radiological Health, and the AmericanNational Standards Institute1. As such it presents nohazard to users who view the output when using properoperating procedures. However, it is recommended thatusers should not stare directly into the beam.

Use of controls or adjustments of procedures other thanthose specified herein may result in hazardous LASERlight exposure.

Use care when working with any optical transmissionequipment. It is good practice to avoid looking directlyat any optical fibers or optical sources. The FR2 emitsa pulsed laser light for a short period of time, and the usershould not look directly into the connector port.It is best to refer to your company's safety procedureswhen working with optical systems.

It is important to keep all optical connections andsurfaces free from dirt, oils or other contamination toensure proper operation. This applies to all connectorsthat are connected to the optical port on the FR2, as wellas the optical port on the FR2 itself. Scratched orcontaminated connectors can reduce system perfor-mance. Refer to your company practices for cleaningoptical connectors. Always replace the protective dustcap on the FR2 after use.

Note: This equipment has been tested and found to complywith the limits for a class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to providereasonable protection against harmful interference when theequipment is operated in a commercial environment. Theequipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequencyenergy, and. if not installed and used in accordance with theinstruction manual, may cause harmful interference with radiocommunications. Operation of this equipment in a residentialarea is likely to cause harmful interference in which case theuser will be required to correct the interference at his ownexpense.

Optical Port Connector - The port is equippedwith an SC, FC, or ST style connector. The optical portallows connection to various optic patch cables. Thewavelength for this port is 1310nm and can be used formultimode or singlemode applications.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) - When theFR2 is first powered ON, the unit goes through a selftest,and all display segments, and annunciators are illumi-nated on power up.

NOTE: Some of the annuciators illuminated ( LINK, andVFL ) on power up are currently not a function used in theModel FR2.

IOR Button - This button selects the Index ofRefraction (IOR) of the optical fiber cable under test. It'srange can be selected from 1.40 to 1.69.

Measure Button - This button when pressedactivates the FR2's laser, and digital measuring circuits.

Feet/Meter Button - This button will selecteither feet or meters as the unit of measure.

Note: Turn on default condition is METERS.

ON Button - This button when depressedturns the FR2 ON and OFF.

Meters

Cable length measurement with the FR2 is simple; just plugyour optical fiber or cable into the FR2's optical portconnector on top of the unit, press and hold the Measurebutton, and read the distance in feet or meters.

Power OnTo turn the FR2 on, press the ON/OFF button once. Theunit will go through a dsiplay test while displaying allsegments and annunciators, after which the FR2's Softwareversion will display. Figure 2 is the FR2's display after theselftest has been completed., and the FR2 is

FEET/METERSFeet or Meters can be selected as the unit of measure.This must be done before an actual distance measure-ment is made.

Note: Turn on default condition is METERS.

IORThe Index of Refraction of the optical cable under testcan be selected on the FR2. Refer to Figure 3. Momen-tarily depressing the IOR button will display the exist-ing setting.

Depressing and holding the IOR button will cause thesetting to increment. When the desired setting isreached, release the IOR button, and the setting willremain.

MeasureTo measure a fiber optic cable, attach the appropriateconnector to the FR2's connector port. Depress and holdthe Measure button until the Laser Active annunciatordisplays ( typically 1.5 seconds ), and then release theMeasure button. Refer to the Figure 4 below.

Measure (cont.)The resulting measurement for a single event will bedisplayed as shown in Figure 5 below. This exampleshows that the distance to the EVENT is 31 meters.

When the FR2 detects multiple events, event number( 1 ) will flash, and the MULTIPLE EVENT annuncia-tor will be displayed. The distance to event number (1 )will then be displayed, and the event number ( 1 ) willextinquish. Refer to figure 6 below. This example showsthat the distance to event number ( 1 ) is 31 meters.

Measure (cont.)By depressing the Measure button again momentarily,the next event number ( 2 ) will flash, and thenextinquish. The distance to event number ( 2 ) will thenbe displayed. Refer to Figure 7 below. This exampleshows that the distance to event ( 2 ) is 72 meters.

Depressing the Measure button again momentarily, willshow if there is another event. If event number( 3 ) flashes, the distance to event ( 3 ) would bedisplayed. If event number ( 1 ) flashes, this meansthat the FR2 has measured only two events, and thedistance to event number ( 1 ) will be displayed again.

If it is desired to initiate a new measurement , for in-stance, to verify cable lengths prior to installation, con-nect the fiber cable in question to the FR2's optical con-nector port. Depress and hold the Measure button un-til the Active Laser annunciator is displayed, and thenrelease the Measure button. The FR2 will mea

Maintenance and Trouble ShootingRepair and CalibrationRepair of the FR2 in the field is NOT recommended. Ifthe unit is not working, make sure the batteries are good,and that all connectors, and connector port are clean. Ifthe unit still will not operate, contact the CustomerService Department at Wilcom, Inc.

Battery ReplacementThe FR2 Optical Fault Locator requires no periodicmaintenance other than cleaning the optical connectorport, and replacing the batteries. Battery life is approxi-mately 13,000 operations. The FR2 will display theLow Battery annunciator as shown in Figure 9 belowwhen the batteries require replacement. The batterycompartment, located on the back of the unit, holds four( 4 ) AA Alkaline batteries. Four phillips screws hold thebattery compartment cover in place.

Optical Connector Port MaintenanceAll optical connections should be kept thoroughlycleaned. Do not force any connectors together. Scratcheson the optical connector port will severely impede theperformance of the FR2. A supply of industry approvedoptical cleaning pads, and mini 2.5mm swabs would behelpful in maintaining optical connectors, and the FR2optical connector port. Also, a can of filtered com-pressed air is useful for blowing out any contaminates inthe FR2's optical connector port, and any connectoradapters being used.

The following procedure is recommended to clean theFR2's ST, FC or SC optical connector port:

1. Blow out any contaminates in the optical connectorport using a can of filtered compressed air.

2. Carefully clean the optical connector port using a2.5mm swab soaked in 99% pure isopropyl alcohol.

3. Carefully wipe the optical connector port with a dry2.5mm swab.

4. Blow dry the optical connector port with a can offiltered compressed air.

5. Always replace the dust cap.

The following procedure is recommended to clean thefiber optic connector:

1. Carefully wipe ferrule with lint free tissue soaked in99% pure isopropyl alcohol.

2. Carefully wipe ferrule with lint free dry tissue.

3. Blow ferrule dry with a can of filtered compressed air.4. Always replace the dust cap.

Helpful HintsIt is important to note that the distance between eventsmust be at least 30 meters. If any event is less than 30meters, the FR2 will not recognize that event. Refer tothe example in Figure 10. In this example, there are four( 4 ) events that the FR2 will recognize and display.Event ( 1 ) will be displayed as 30 meters, event ( 2 ) willbe displayed as 130 meters, event ( 3 ) will be displayedas 630 meters, and event ( 4 ) will be displayed as 1630meters.

Helpful Hints ( cont. )In the following example, there is an event that is lessthan 30 meters. The FR2 will not recognize this particu-lar event however, the FR2 will recognize the subse-quent events. Refer to Figure 11. In this example therewill be three ( 3 ) events displayed. Event ( 1 ) will bedisplay as 120 meters, event ( 2 ) will be displayed as 620meters, and event ( 3 ) will be displayed as 1620 meters.

WARRANTYAll products are warranted against defects in materials and workman-ship. This warranty applies for a period of two (2) years from date ofdelivery, except for Fiber Optic instrumentation and equipmentwhich have a one (1) year warranty on parts and two (2) years on labor.(The only exception in the digital testing equipment is the D550Shark, which has a warranty of one (1) year from date of delivery.)Wilcom's obligation under this warranty is limited to servicing oradjusting each instrument returned to its factory within the warrantyperiod, and to replace any components found to be defective. Ifdetermined that the defective condition is a result of misuse orabnormal operation, repairs will be billed.
