Your Cable TV input into your home may be a single (75 ohm)cable or a converter box installation. In either case, the con-

nection to the TV is very easy. Follow the steps below to connectyour cable signal to your new television.

If your cable signal comes directly from a round 75Ω coaxialcable use the following steps:

1 Connect the open end of the round Cable Company sup-plied cable to the 75Ω input on the TV. Screw it down fingertight.

2 Plug the television in to the wall outlet and turn the TV on.Refer to the AUTOPROGRAM feature to program all theavailable channels on your cable signal.

If your cable signal comes from a cable box, use the followingsteps:

3 Connect the open end of the round Cable Company sup-plied cable to the cable signal IN(put) plug on the back ofthe Cable Box.

4 Using a separate round coaxial cable, connect one end to theOUT(put) plug on the back of the Cable Box.

5 Connect the other end of the round coaxial cable to the75Ω input on the back of the television. Screw it down fingertight.

6 Plug the television in to the wall outlet and turn the TV on.Refer to the TUNER and AUTOPROGRAM features on page3 of this Quick Use Guide. TUNER should be set to theCABLE option. AUTOPROGRAM can be set to program allthe available channels on your cable signal into the televi-sion’s memory.

Acombination antenna receives normal broadcast chan-nels (VHF 2–13 and UHF 14–69). Your connection is

easy because there is only one 75Ω (ohm) antenna plug onthe back of your TV, and that’s where the antenna goes.

1 If your antenna has a round cable (75 ohm) on the end,then you're ready to connect it to the TV.If your antenna has flat, twin-lead wire (300 ohm), youfirst need to attach the antenna wires to the screws on a300- to 75-ohm adapter.

2 Push the round end of the adapter (or antenna) onto the75Ω (ohm) plug on the back of the TV. If the round end ofthe antenna wire is threaded, screw it down finger tight.

3 Plug the television in to the wall outlet and turn the TVon. Refer to the TUNER and AUTOPROGRAM features onpage 3 of this Quick Use Guide. TUNER should be set to theANTENNA option. AUTOPROGRAM can be set to programall the available channels on your cable signal into the televi-sion’s memory.

The combination antenna receives normal broadcast channels 2-13 (VHF) and 14-69 (UHF).

FeaturesAudio/Video Jack Panel allows direct connections with VCRs,DVDs, or other devices, providing quality TV picture and soundplayback.Audio Volume Leveler (AVL) Control keeps the TV sound at aneven level. Peaks and valleys that occur during program changes orcommercial breaks are reduced, making for a more consistent, com-fortable sound.AutoLock™ allows you to block the viewing of certain channels orprograms with certain ratings if you do not want your children toview inappropriate materials.SmartPicture™ allows you to change the picture settings (color,tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, such as sports,movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals with the push of onebutton.SmartSound™ allows you to select from four factory-set controlsand a personal control that you set according to your own prefer-ences through the onscreen Sound menu. Channel Edit makes it easy to limit orexpand the number of channels that are available to you when youpress the Channel (+) or (–) buttons on your remote control.Closed Captioning allows the viewer to read TV program dialogueor voice conversations as onscreen text.Infrared Remote Control works your TV and other remote-con-trolled devices, such as VCRs, DVD players, cable converters, andsatellite receivers.Onscreen Menu shows helpful messages and instructions for set-ting TV feature controls (can be viewed in English, French, orSpanish).Sleep Timer automatically turns the TV OFF after a set amount oftime that you choose.Timer allows you to set your TV to turn itself ON and OFF once ordaily like an alarm clock.

HOW TO USE THE INSTALLATION FEATURES

For our Spanish and French-speaking TV own-ers, an onscreen LANGUAGE option is pres-

ent. The LANGUAGE control enables you to setthe TV’s onscreen menu to be shown in eitherEnglish, Spanish, or French.

1 Press the MENU/SELECT button on theremote control to show the onscreen menu.

2 Press the CURSOR DOWN button repeatedlyuntil Install is highlighted.

3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to shiftthe menu to the left and highlight Language.

4 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to high-light the Language Control options.

5 Press the CURSOR DOWN or CURSOR UPbutton to select English, Español (Spanish), orFrancais (French).

6 Press the STATUS/EXIT button to remove themenu from the screen.

LANGUAGE

Remember, the LANGUAGE control makes only theTV’s onscreen MENU items appear in English, Spanish,or French text. It does not change the other onscreentext features, such as Closed Captioning (CC), with TVshows.

TUNER MODE

The Tuner Mode allows you to change the Tv’ssignal input to Cable, Antenna, or Auto Mode.

It’s important for the TV to know what type of sig-nal is connected, either Antenna or Cable.

3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to shiftthe menu to the left.

4 Press the CURSOR DOWN button to selectthe Tuner Mode control.

easy for you to select only the TV stations in yourarea by pressing the CHANNEL (+) or (–) button.

Channel Edit makes it easy for you to add or deletechannels from the list of channels stored in the

TV’s memory.

1 Press the MENU/SELECT button on the remotecontrol to show the onscreen menu.


3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to enter theInstall menu. Language will be highlighted.

4 Press the CURSOR DOWN button repeatedlyuntil Channel Edit is selected.

5 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to enter theChannel Edit mode.

6 Press the CURSOR UP or CURSOR DOWNbuttons to scroll though the list of available chan-nels, you can also press the CH+ or CH- to scrollthrough the list of channels. Or, press the numberedbuttons to select a specific numbered channel.

7 With the channel you want to edit selected, press theCURSOR RIGHT button to activate the “skip-ping” of the channel. The skipped channel will notappear when changing channels.

8 Press the STATUS/EXIT button to remove theonscreen menu from the screen.

Note: When you want to add a channel that has beenskipped, repeat steps 1-4. By pressing the CURSORRIGHT button skipped is deactivated.

NAME CONTROL (PICK LIST)

The channel NAME feature allows you to listthe “call” letters of your favorite stations

beside their channel numbers when they appearon the screen. The TV has in memory a list of the50 most popular channel names (for example:ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc.). You can also entera custom name (up to five characters) see nextpage for details.

Tune to the specific channel you want to name, thenfollow the steps below.



3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to enterthe Install menu. Language will be highlighted.

4 Press the CURSOR DOWN button repeatedlyuntil Name is selected.

5 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button to moveto enter the Name menu.

6 With Pick List highlighted, press the CURSORRIGHT button to enter the “Pick List” selec-tions.

7 Press the CURSOR UP or CURSOR DOWNbuttons to scroll through a list of options.

8 After you have selected a name for the channel,press the CURSOR RIGHT button to savethe name in the TV’s memory, it will appear inthe upper left hand corner of the screen.

Dyn(amic) Contrast – helps to “sharpen” the picturequality by making the dark portions of the picturedarker and the light portions more noticeable. You canselect from the various modes: Off, Min, Med, andMax.

Color Enh(ancement) – increases the intensity of thecolor when “On” is selected.

Your television comes with an onscreen clock. TheTV can also be set to turn on or off at a specific

time and tune to a specific channel when it powersitself on.

AutoChron™ can automatically set the TV’s onscreenclock. Since the time is received from a broadcast

signal, you must be sure that a cable TV or Antennasignal is present before you use the AutoChron™ fea-ture.

1 Press the CLOCK button on the remote controlto display the Timer onscreen menu.

2 Press the CURSOR DOWN button untilAutoChron is selected.

UNDERSTANDING THE AUTOLOCK™ CONTROLS

G: General Audience - All ages admitted.Most parents would find this programmingsuitable for all ages. This type of program-ming contains little or no violence, nostrong language, and little or no sexual dia-logue or sexual situations.

PG: Parental Guidance Suggested - Thisprogramming contains material that parentsmay find unsuitable for younger children. Itmay contain one or more of the following:Moderate violence, some sexual situations,infrequent coarse language, or some sugges-tive dialogue.

PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned - Thisprogramming contains material that parentsmay find unsuitable for children under theage of 13. It contains one or more of the fol-lowing: violence, sexual situations, coarselanguage, or suggestive dialogue.

R: Restricted -This programming is specifi-cally designed for adults. Anyone under theage of 17 should view this programmingonly with an accompanying parent or adultguardian. T he AutoLock™ feature receives andprocesses data sent by broadcasters or

other program providers that contain pro-gram content advisories. When programmedby the viewer, a TV with AutoLock™ canrespond to the content advisories and blockprogram content that may be found objection-able (such as offensive language, violence,sexual situations, etc.). This is a great featureto censor the type of programming childrenmay watch.

In the AutoLock™ section, you’ll learn howto block channels and programming that isnot rated, is unrated, or has no rating. Youwill also find out how to turn these blockingfeatures ON or OFF. Following are briefexplanations of some terms and ratings relat-ed to the AutoLock™ feature.

AutoLock™ offers various BlockingOptions from which to choose:

BLOCKING: The BLOCKING control iswhat can be thought of as the “master switch”for AutoLock™. This control affects the set-tings you have chosen for blocking programsaccording to movie ratings or TV ratings, orfor blocking programs that have no rating orare unrated. When the BLOCKING control isOFF, the blocking or censoring of programs isdisabled. When the BLOCKING control isON, blocking will occur according to the set-tings you have chosen.

NO RATING: ALL programming with nocontent advisory data can be blocked if NORATING is set to ON.

Programming that has No Rating is notencoded with any rating information from theMPAA or the Parental Guidelines. Any pro-gramming could fall into this category.

You also can block individual channels orblock programming based on ratings of theMPAA and TV broadcasters. (See a descrip-tion of the ratings on this page.)

AutoLockTM allows parents to block out or“censor” any channels they think children

should not watch. A channel blocked by theAutoLockTM control cannot be viewed until a cor-rect access code is used to unlock the channelfor viewing. First, let’s set your AutoLock accesscode.

1 Press the MENU/SELECT button onthe remote control to show the onscreenmenu.

2 Press the CURSOR UP or CURSORDOWN button to highlight Features.

3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button todisplay the Features menu.

4 Press the CURSOR DOWN button tohighlight the AutoLock control.

5 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button toenter the AutoLock mode. “Access Code----” will appear.

6 Using the numbered buttons on theremote control, enter the access code. Ifyou do not know your code, 0,7,1,1 is thedefault code. After you have entered thecode once, Incorrect will appear on thescreen. Enter the code a second time,Correct will appear. When “Correct”appears, the AutoLock menu is accessibleand you can proceed to change the accesscode.

7 Press the CURSOR DOWN button tohighlight Change Code.

8 Press the CURSOR RIGHT button toenter the Change Code menu, “EnterNew Code ----” will appear. Enter a newfour-digit code using the number but-tons, “Confirm Code----” will appear onthe screen.

9 Using the numbered buttons, re-enteryour new four-digit code, “ConfirmCode” will appear. After re-enteringyour new code,”Correct” will flash onthe screen briefly and the highlight bargoes back to AutoLock.

Press the CURSOR RIGHT or LEFTto turn the block on the rating ON or OFF.

NOTE: More specific subratings (for violence,sexual content, dialogue, or fantasy violence)are available for TV-Y7, TV-PG, TV-14, andTV-MA. (Refer to page 13 for definitions.)

To access these subratings, with the main rating selected, press the CURSOR RIGHT. Then, repeat steps 8and 9 to turn the sub-ratings ON or OFF.

Press the STATUS/EXIT button to remove the menu from the screen.

When a rating is turned ON, all higher ratingsalso will be turned on automatically. Forexample, if the TV-Y7 rating is turned on, theTV-14 and TV-X ratings also will be turned on.

HOW TO USE THE FORMAT CONTROLS

You can change the screen format size tomatch the type of program you’re watch-

ing. Select the normal 4:3, Expand 4:3, orCompress 16:9. Compress 16:9 allows moviesto be viewed in their full width (known as let-ter-box style).

1 Press the MENU/SELECT button onthe remote control to show the on-screen menu.

2 Press the CURSOR UP or CURSORDOWN twice to highlight Features.

3 Press the CURSOR RIGHT and themenu will shift to the left.

Some DVD Discs are encoded with as muchas 30% more video information to give theviewer the best possible picture quality. Withthe DVD Player in the 16:9 picture format,the playback of this type of disc (containingextra video information), can produce a num-ber of small white lines in the upper portionof the black letterbox area. With some ofthese discs, this situation is unavoidable andit does not require a service call.

A“list” or series of previously viewedchannels can be selected using the SURF

button on your remote control. With this fea-ture you can easily switch between differentTV programs that currently interest you.SmartSurf allows you set up to eight channelsin its quick viewing “list.”

1 Press the CHANNEL (+) or (–) button(or the Number buttons) to select a chan-nel to add to the SURF list.

2 Press the SURF button on the remote.The channel number will be displayedwith the word ADD to the right.

3 Press the button to ADD the chan-nel to the Surf list. The display willchange from ADD to DELETE.

Repeat steps 1 through 3 to add additionalchannels (up to eight) to the SURF list. Assoon as a ninth channel is added, the firstchannel in the list will be removed.

How to select Surf channels:

Have you ever fallen asleep in front of theTV, only to have it wake you up at two in

the morning with a test pattern soundscreeching in your ears? Well, your TV canenable you to avoid that discomfort by auto-matically turning itself off. With the SleepTimer feature, you can set a timer to automat-ically switch the TV OFF after a period oftime you choose (15-minute increments up to60 minutes, then 30-minute increments up to90 minutes, then 60-minute increments up to240 minutes).

1 Press the SLEEP button on theremote control. The SLEEP timeronscreen display will appear in theupper part of the screen.

2 Within five seconds, press theSLEEP button repeatedly to pick theamount of time (15-minute incrementsup to 60 minutes, then 30-minuteincrements up to 90 minutes, then 60-minute increments up to 240 minutes)before the TV will turn itself off.

An onscreen countdown will appear duringthe last minute before the TV shuts itself off.

To see how many minutes remain before the TVshuts itself off, press the STATUS/EXIT button.A Sleep Timer setting can be cancelled by press-ing any button during the last minute of the oper-ation.

During the last minute of a SLEEP timer setting, an onscreencountdown will be displayed.

SmartSound™ allows you to select from fourfactory-set controls and a personal control

that you set according to your own preferencesthrough the onscreen Sound menu. The fourfactory-set controls (Multimedia, Speech,Music, and Movies) enable you to tailor the TVsound so as to enhance the particular programyou are watching. You can change the Personalsetting to your preference. Follow these steps toselect any of the options.

1 Press the SMART SOUND button onthe remote control. The currentSmartSoundTM setting will appear in themiddle of the screen.

2 Press the SMART SOUND buttonrepeatedly to toggle among the settings:Personal, Multimedia,Speech, Music, orMovies.

Remember, only the PERSONAL control canbe changed by the viewer. This changes thesettings in the main onscreen menu’s SOUNDcontrols.

AutoSoundTM works only with the programscoming through the ANTENNA/CABLE(ANT) input on the rear of the TV (RFaudio). It will not control the sound levelsfor the external connections.

3 Does the remote turn the device ON?

This method can take up to two minutes toperform.

Don’t let the device scan up more than fivechannels. If you do, the remote may pass upthe right code and another two minutesearch cycle will have to be repeated.

If no channel change happens within twominutes, repeat steps 1-4. Should a channelchange still not occur, the remote will notwork the desired device.

REMOTE CONTROL VCR RELATED BUTTONS

POWER BUTTONPress to turn the VCR ON andOFF.

CLOCK • TV/VCR BUTTONPress to choose VCR or TV posi-tion at the VCR. In VCR position,you can view tapes. Use TV posi-tion to view one program whilerecording another. In TV position, theTV/VCR/CLOCK button mayaccess the TV's Clock menu.

NUMBER BUTTONSPress to select channels at theVCR.

SURF/II (PAUSE) BUTTONPress to temporarily stop the tapeduring play or recording. Pressagain to release Pause.

FAST FORWARD BUTTON

Press to rapidly advance the tape.For some VCRs you may need tostop the tape first. During play-back, press and hold the button toview the picture moving forwardrapidly.

CHANNEL + /– BUTTONSPress to scan up or down throughthe VCR channels.

A/CH • RECORD BUTTONPress and hold to begin a VCRrecording.

TV/VCR/ACC SWITCHSet to VCR to send commands tothe VCR.

PLAY BUTTON

Press to play a videotape.

REWIND BUTTON

Press to rewind tapes. For someVCRs, you may have to stop thetape first. During playback, holddown the button to view the pic-ture moving rapidly in reverse.

STOP BUTTON

Press to stop a tape.

When using the TV remote with a VCR,first make certain it is set to control

your VCR.

1 Set the TV/VCR/ACC mode switchto VCR on the remote.

2 Point the top of the remote towardthe front of the VCR (remote sensorwindow) when pressing the buttons.

The VCR buttons on the remote will not oper-ate your VCR if those features are not on youroriginal VCR remote control.

All VCR functions (particularly Search,Rewind, Fast Forward, etc.) will operate thesame as with the original VCR remote control.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

No Power• Check the TV power cord. Unplug the TV, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the plug into the outlet and push the

POWER button again.• Check that the outlet is not on a wall switch. • Be sure the fuse is not blown on the AC power strip, if one is being used.

No Picture• Check antenna connections. Are they properly secured to the TV's ANT 75Ω plug?• Check the TUNER MODE control for the correct tuner setting.• Try running the Auto Program feature to find all available channels.• Press the AV button on the remote to make sure the correct signal source is selected (FRONT, AV1, AV2, Current

Channel, etc.).

No Sound• Check the VOLUME buttons.• Check the MUTE button on the remote control.• If you’re attempting to hook up auxiliary equipment, check the audio jack connections located on the front of the TV.

Remote Does Not Work• Check the batteries. If necessary, replace them with AA Heavy Duty (Zinc Chloride) or Alkaline batteries.

Remote Does Not Work Continued• Clean the remote control and the remote control sensor window on the TV.• Check the TV power cord. Unplug the TV, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the plug into the outlet and push the

POWER button again. • Be sure the fuse is not blown on the AC power strip, if one is being used.• Check to be sure the TV outlet is not on a wall switch.

TV Displays Wrong Channel or No Channels Above 13• Repeat channel selection.• Add the desired channel numbers (using the CHANNEL EDIT control) into the TV’s memory.• Check to be sure the TUNER MODES are set to the CABLE option and run the Auto Program feature to find all

available channels.

TV Displays white lines in letterbox when viewing a DVD disc• Some DVD Discs are encoded with as much as 30% more video information to give the best possible picture quality.

With the DVD Player in the 16:9 picture format, the playback of this type of disc with extra video information, canproduce a number of small white lines in the upper portion of the black letterbox area. With some of these discs, thissituation is unavoidable and it does not require a service call.

CLEANING AND CARE

WARNING Concerning Stationary Images on the TV Screen:

Do not leave stationary or letterbox images on screen for extended periods of time. This can cause uneven pic-ture-tube aging.

Normal use of the TV should involve the showing of pictures that contain constantly moving and changing images thatfill the screen. Be careful not to leave nonmoving images on screen for extended periods of time, or to display the sameimages on screen too frequently, because subtle ghost images can be left on the picture tubes. Sources of stationaryimages may be DVD disks, laser disks, video games, CD-i disks, videotapes, digital television boxes, broadcast chan-nels, cable channels, satellite channels, and others. Here are some examples of stationary images (this is not an all-inclusive list; you may encounter others in your viewing):

• DVD menus—listings of DVD disk content

• Letterbox black bars—shown at the top and bottom of the TV screen when a wide screen (16:9) movie is viewedon a TV with standard (4:3) aspect ratio.

• Video-game images and scoreboards• Television station logos—present a problem if they are bright and stationary; moving or low-contrast graphics are

less likely to cause uneven aging of the picture tube

• Stock-market tickers—presented at the bottom of the TV screen

• Shopping channel logos and pricing displays—bright and shown constantly or repeatedly in the same location onthe TV screen.

Placement of the TV

• To avoid cabinet warping, cabinet color changes, and increased chance of set failure, do not place the TV where tem-peratures can become excessively hot; for example, in direct sunlight or near a heating appliance.

• Be sure to allow a free flow of air to and from the perforated back cover of the set.

Cleaning

• To avoid possible shock hazard, be sure the TV is unplugged from the electrical outlet before cleaning.

• Regularly dust the TV with a dry, nonscratching duster to keep the TV clean.

• When cleaning the TV, take care not to scratch or damage the screen surface. Avoid wearing jewelry or using any-thing abrasive. Do not use household cleaners. Wipe the front screen with a clean cloth dampened with water. Useeven, easy, vertical strokes when cleaning.

• Gently wipe the cabinet surfaces with a clean cloth or sponge dampened in a solution of cool, clear water and a mildsoap or detergent. Use a clean, dry cloth to dry the wiped surfaces.

• Occasionally vacuum the ventilation holes or slots in the back cover of the set.

• Never use thinners, insecticide sprays, or other chemicals on or near the cabinet, as they might cause permanent mar-ring of the cabinet finish.

Audio/Video Inputs • These connectors (phono type plug)receive audio and video signals from VCRs or other devices.

Auto Program • The procedure of adding or deleting channelnumbers into the Television’s memory. The Television “remem-bers’’ only the locally available or desired channel numbers andskips over any unwanted channel numbers.

Closed Caption • Broadcast standard which allows you to readthe voice content of television programs on the TV screen.Designed to help the hearing impaired, this feature uses on-screen "text boxes" to show dialog and conversations while theTV program is in progress.

Coaxial Cable • A single solid antenna wire normally matchedwith a metal (F-type) connector that screws (or pushes) directlyonto a 75 Ohm input found on the Television or VCR.

Menu • An on-screen listing of feature controls that are avail-able for adjustment.

On-screen Displays (OSD) • The wording or messages generat-ed by the television to help the user with specific feature con-trols (color adjustment, programming, etc.).

Remote Sensor • A window or opening on the Television con-trol panel through which infrared remote control signals arereceived.

Status/Exit • Allows the user to quickly confirm the currentchannel number. Status can also be used to clear the Televisionof on-screen displays or information (rather than waiting for thedisplays to “time out” or automatically disappear from thescreen).

Surf • Scanning specific channels in a limited channel list.

Tuner Mode • Designed for first time set up and use where theTV is set for antenna or cable TV signal connections.

Twin Lead Wire • The more commonly used name for the twostrand 300 Ohm antenna wire used with many indoor and out-door antenna systems. In many cases this type of antenna wirerequires an additional adapter (or balun) in order to connect tothe 75 Ohm Input terminals on recent Televisions and VCRs.

MAGNAVOX LIMITED WARRANTY

MAGNAVOX warrants this product against defect in materialor workmanship, subject to any conditions set forth as follows:

PROOF OF PURCHASE: You must have proof of the date of purchase to receive war-ranted repair on the product. A sales receipt or other docu-ment showing the product and the date that you purchased theproduct as well as the authorized retailer included, is consid-ered such proof.

COVERAGE: (If this product is determined to be defective)

LABOR: For a period of ninety (90) days from the date of pur-chase, Magnavox will repair or replace the product, at itsoption, at no charge, or pay the labor charges to any Magnavoxauthorized service center. After the period of ninety (90) days,Magnavox will no longer be responsible for charges incurred.

PARTS: For a period of one (1) year, Magnavox will supply, atno charge, new or rebuilt replacement parts in exchange fordefective parts. Magnavox authorized service centers will pro-vide removal and installation of the parts under the specifiedlabor warranty.

DISPLAY: For a period of one (1) year from the date of pur-chase, Magnavox will supply, at no charge, a new or rebuiltactive display device in exchange for the defective display.Magnavox authorized service centers will provide removal andinstallation of the parts under the specified labor warranty.(PTV screens carry a thirty (30) day replacement warranty.)

EXCLUDED FROM WARRANTY COVERAGEYour warranty does not cover:• Labor charges for installation or setup of the product, adjust-

ment of customer controls on the product, and installationor repair of antenna systems outside of the product.

• Product repair and/or part replacement because of improperinstallation, connections to improper voltage supply, abuse,neglect, misuse, accident, unauthorized repair or other causenot within the control of Magnavox.

• A product that requires modification or adaptation to enableit to operate in any country other than the country forwhich it was designed, manufactured, approved and/orauthorized, or repair of products damaged by these modifica-tions.

• Damage occurring to product during shipping when improp-erly packaged or cost of associated packaging.

• Product lost in shipment and no signature verification ofreceipt can be provided.

• A product used for commercial or institutional purposes(including but not limited to rental purposes).
