INSTALLATION

Positioning and MountingThis chapter describes how the following system components are positioned in relation to each other:• Control unit• Printout activator• Speed encoder• Communication device (PC, etc.)• Print heads (connecting only)For information on adapting the control unit to the mechanical installation, see “Setting Up the Control Unit” on page 20.Note that the standard Matthews warranty is void if any other than Matthews approved equipment and cables are connected to this control unit.

Control UnitThe SX-32e control unit has been designed for placing on a horizontal surface, such as a table. For fixing into position, either vertically or horizontally, the mounting bracket must be used. See “The Mounting Bracket” on page 41.

Please follow these instructions in the order they appear in the Installation chapter. The correct sequence of events is:1 Set up each system component mechanically but do not connect to the control

unit yet. See “Positioning and Mounting” on page 11.2 Connect equipment to the SX-32e. See “Connecting External Equipment”

INSTALLATION

Lethal voltages are present in this equipment when electrical power is applied. For personal safety and to prevent damage, it is essential that the control unit is positioned so that it does not come into contact with liquids, e.g. during wash down.

• The use of extension cables is not recommended. For this reason the control unit should be positioned as close as possible to the print heads and power source, etc.

Print HeadsUp to four print heads, totalling 32 nozzles, can be used together with the SX-32e.For connecting print heads to the control unit, see “Connecting Print Heads” on page 17.For more information on installing print heads, please see the documentation received with the applicable print heads. When using standard print heads it is important that they are mounted as described and shown below, otherwise the text will appear upsidedown and inverted.• Mount each printhead so that the clamp is on the right hand side, when you stand

behind it, as shown below.

• Set the print direction for each printhead so that it corresponds to the direction from which the print target is coming. In the above example printhead (1) must be set to RIGHT, whilst printhead (2) must be set to LEFT.

Printout ActivatorFor connecting a printout activator to the control unit, see “Connecting a Printout Activator and Speed Encoder” on page 18.Note that the standard Matthews warranty is void if any other than a Matthews approved printout activator is connected to this control unit.

INSTALLATION

I•Mark SX-32e Technica

What is a Printout Activator?A printout activator, or trigger, sends a signal to the control unit when it has detected the presence of a print target. This informs the control unit when to start a print cycle. Each time the control unit receives the signal it will start a print cycle. A print cycle consists of a printout activation, a travel distance (see Margin under “Printer Settings” on page 22) and the actual printout

Please follow these guidelines when installing a printout activator. See also “Installing with Multiple Print Heads” on page 13.• Mount the printout activator so that the printout is activated (triggered), by the

print target, before the print target passes the top print head nozzle.• Ensure that the printout activator is mounted so that the print target passes as close

as possible.• Each printout activation signal causes an internal process to start. This means that

if many signals are received in quick succession problems may occur. Therefore mount the printout activator so that it transmits only one signal per printout.

• The terminate print function (“Trigger Settings” on page 25) requires that the printout activator signals when the end of the print target has passed by. For this function to work correctly, the printout activator must be positioned in line with the top nozzle of the print head.

See the Operator Manual for more information on this function.

Installing with Multiple Print HeadsA single (common) printout activator is used with the SX-32e. This means that, if two print heads are used, both printouts are started by the same activator. It is important that this is taken into consideration when positioning the printout activator.

Travel distancePrintout activated here

14

INSTALLATION

Speed EncoderFor connecting a speed encoder to the control unit, see “Connecting a Printout Activator and Speed Encoder” on page 18.Note that the standard Matthews warranty is void if any other than a Matthews approved speed encoder is connected to this control unit.

What is a Speed Encoder?A speed encoder is a device which converts the motion of, for example, a conveyor line into electrical pulses which are then used, by the control unit, as a reference when automatically adjusting the horizontal gap between dots to suit the conveyor line speed. This means that even if the print target should change speed during a printout the resulting text would not be affected. As the print target moves the speed encoder shaft rotates causing the speed encoder to emit pulses. After a group1 of pulses has been received by the control unit a single column of the selected message will be printed, and after the next group of pulses the next column is printed, and so on until the complete message has been printed.

The distance that the print target moves between pulse groups is equal to the distance between the printed columns (x).Usually the speed encoder is installed so that the distance between the printed columns (x) is equal to the vertical distance between the print head nozzles (y). This arrangement will produce printouts with equally spaced dots (both vertically and horizontally).

Factors Which Affect Column Spacing• Number of pulses per revolution from the speed encoder.• Number of speed encoder shaft revolutions per distance unit travelled by the print

target.

1. The number of pulses in a group depends on the Spacing setting.

14 groups of pulses have been received from the speed encoder causing 14 columns (including spaces) to be printed. 0

InstallingOnly use Matthews approved speed encoders.A speed encoder is a precision instrument and should be mounted accordingly. Place the speed encoder so that it is well protected from knocks and vibration.Ensure that there is no play between the speed encoder shaft and the drive as this will otherwise affect the printout. It is also important that the speed encoder is mounted so that it reflects exactly the motion of the print target.

RS-232 Communication DeviceSee also “Connecting an RS-232 Communication Device” on page 19.Using I-Mark ASCII Protocol, any device (such as a PC, etc.) can communicate with the SX-32e control unit via an RS-232 serial interface which complies with the following specifications:

RS-232 Specification

Communication over distances greater than 15 m can be achieved by converting to RS-422 or 20mA current loop. Please contact your dealer for details.

Driver output signal level ±5V to ±15V

Connecting Print Heads

Damage or incorrect operation will occur if print heads from different ranges are used together on the same control unit.

Always switch the control unit off before connecting or disconnecting cables.

Connect the print heads to the control unit according to the diagram above. See the print head documentation for information on the cables necessary for connecting to the SX-32e. Note that print head cables are not universal; specific print heads require specific cables. The standard Matthews warranty is void and damage can occur if any other than Matthews print heads or cables are used.See also “Checking Print Head Operation” on page 36.

If you are using multiple print heads, it may be a good idea to mark each head with the number it is identified with in the display (1, 2, 3 or 4). Then it will be easier for the user to see which head shall receive a message.

DescriptionFor setting the number of speed encoder pulses per distance unit (metres or feet) when a speed encoder is used. The encoder factor setting can be calculated as follows:

Where: C = circumference of wheel (meters or feet), ppr = pulses per revolution of the encoder, E = encoder factor setting (pulses/m or pulses/foot).

The encoder factor setting must be between 250-50 000 pulses/m (77-15 240 pulses/foot).The control unit is set to use both channels A+B of an encoder. Thus, if an encoder has 10 000 ppr and both channels A+B are connected to the control unit, the total ppr would be 20 000. If both channels of the encoder are connected to the control unit, then this value must be used in the formula stated above.

Communication Settings

The serial communication parameters must be set so that they correspond with the parameter settings of the device with which the SX-32e shall communicate.

DescriptionFor setting the type of print head, number of print heads to be used and how many valves each head has.

Comments• Print heads from the following ranges are for use with the SX-32e

control unit: STD (Standard), DOD•8000, DOD•3000 See the documentation received with the applicable print head for more information.

• The print head configuration setting determines the message height when creating messages.

Description• During periods of non-printing it is possible for the ink in the nozzles

to start to dry. This dried ink can effect the quality of the first printout after this inactive period. Standby compensation provides a method to eliminate this issue. This is accomplished by holding each valve open proportionally longer for the first dot column printed. This allows the ink in the nozzle to be re-wetted and form proper drops. There are ten possible settings: off, and 1 through 9. The higher the number, the longer each valve is held open for the first column printed. Choose a value that provides the proper correction for your normal non-printing interval.

Checking and Finalizing the Installation

The object of this chapter is to check the:• status of the printout activator signal.• status of the speed encoder signal.• print head operation.

Troubleshooting the Input Signals

Status monitor screen

Total number of units marked.

1 Switch the control unit on.2 When the main screen is shown, follow the above path.

3 Press so that the lamp to the right of the button turns red. This will stop printouts being activated during the trigger signal check.

4 Cause the printout trigger to be activated, e.g. for a photocell, place an object in front of the photocell at the same distance from it that the print target shall pass by.The Trigger active box should now become filled ( ) indicating that the signal from the trigger is being received and that, under normal circumstances, a printout will have been activated. If the box is not filled, switch the control unit off and check the trigger and its connection to the SX-32e and try again. Also, check that the photocell is close enough to the object.

This chapter assumes that:• the system components are in place, see “Positioning and Mounting” on

page 11.• external equipment has been connected to the control unit, see “Connecting

External Equipment” on page 16.• the control unit has been adapted to the installation, see “Setting Up the Control

Unit” on page 20.The final step to installing the SX-32e is to test the functionality of some of the system components.

APPENDICES

The Mounting BracketUsing the mounting bracket kit, the SX-32e can be fixed into position either verti-cally or horizontally. In both cases the lower section can be rotated 180 degrees so that the cable connections can be accessed from the front or rear (above or below when vertical).

Rotating the Lower Section

Always switch the control unit off before connecting or disconnecting cables.

1 Disconnect all cables.2 Remove the four screws holding the lower and upper sections together.3 Lift the upper section and rotate the lower section no more that 180 degrees. Dam-

age to the internal cables can occur if the lower section is rotated more than 180 degrees. Then, making sure that no wires are trapped, put the two sections together and secure using the original screws.

HorizontalThis how the SX-32e is normally positioned. The bracket is only necessary if the SX-32e shall be fixed into position.

VerticalIn this example the lower section of the SX-32e is rotated 180 degrees so that cables can be connected from below.

Factory Settings

The following table shows the factory setting for each parameter.

Tips for Barcode PrintingBarcodes differ from other information that can be printed by the SX-32e in that the information that they encode must be extracted by a barcode scanner. This means that the barcode must be printed correctly otherwise the scanner will not be able to read the information. The following tips should be helpful when installing a printer which shall be used to print barcodes. Remember that the print target surface material affects the printout results.• Use a speed encoder which gives out at least 25 000 pulses per metre (7620 pulses

per foot) travelled by the print target.• The closer the print head is to the print target during printout, the better the result

will be.• Ensure that the colour of the print target is not too dark or that the surface is shiny.• Barcode scanners can not read barcodes that are printed with red ink.• See the documentation received with your print head for more information.
