Being Your Best Self at YMS Beginning next week, YMS students will begin SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment) tes ng in English Language Arts and
Math. Students have been asked to make the connec on between being their best selves and giving their best effort on the SBA. For the rest of their lives, students will have to take tests to both prove their knowledge of a subject and demonstrate the applica‐on of that knowledge in performance. When they apply for a driver’s license, they must take a wri en test of their knowledge and
a driving test of their performance. It will be the same on the SBA, which will require both a tes ng of their skills and knowledge along with a performance task to assess their applica on.
Teachers and staff use the results of the SBA to make decisions about student instruc on and placement, and we use it as an assessment of how well we are doing as a school to improve student learning and growth. So it is important for students to give their best effort on this assessment. Parents can help in this effort by ensuring students get plenty of sleep, eat a nutri ous break‐fast, and avoid distrac ons to academic focus. Encourage your students to use the following checklist to ensure their best chance of success:

Smarter Balance Assessment (English and Math) and Science MSP:
State testing begins for 7th and 8th grade students next week. The Smarter Balance Assessment and the Science Measure of Academic Progress (MSP 8th grade only) are used for school im-provement planning, course development, master scheduling and for student placement, so we encourage students to give their best effort. Students may have less homework than you are used to seeing; however, they should still have some homework during the testing window. Please continue to monitor academic progress using Family Access or contact your student’s teacher or school counselor if you have any questions.
