KEITHMcMAHON

Good evening and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for this evening’s Ryman North fixture with Waltham Abbey.

I’d like to start by taking this opportunity to welcome Paul Wickenden and his Waltham Abbey team here to Bayliss Avenue as we prepare to face the league leaders for the second time in four days as our tough start to the season continues.

Anyhow I hope that our visitors enjoy their short stay with us after braving the M25 this evening and have a safe trip home.

Saturday saw us make the trip into Suffolk to face an AFC Sudbury side who also topped the very early league table before kick off.

Perhaps at the beginning of the game away from home we would have taken a point if it was offered to us. However, upon reflection, we’ve come back from going a goal down early doors and could have been 4-1 up by half-time - we were looking very comfortable.

We gave away a very sloppy goal to level the game up at 2-2, and even though their guy has git a great strike to put them back in front, it was because we had allowed him far too much room.

We went to sleep for twenty minutes to find ourselves behind. We did recover and I felt we ought to have had a blatant penalty when Stuart Zanone was flattened.

Both teams deserve lots of credit for producing a really cracking encounter that was somewhat spoiled by the match officials.

The assistant who was in front of us laughed at us and spoke to us like we were rubbish, which I thought was disgraceful. We bit our lips though and did well to come back into the game once again - Tyrus’ goal at the end really was a great finish and it was no less than we deserved.

I thought we fully deserved at least a point from the game so I would have been completely gutted had we come away empty-handed, even if just for the way we played during the first half.

To go away from home and score three goals against a side like Sudbury is something I’m really pleased with, but if we score three then we really ought to go on and win the game.

If there are any sides in the division who don’t know a lot about us, they will certainly learn about us soon.

We may not outplay a lot of teams in the league, but we will still always try to play football in the right areas. There will not be a side we face this season who will outwork us or outrun us, and we will certainly never give up.

Sudbury showed that, too - we kept on going until the very end and got

04 THAMESMEAD TOWNv Waltham Abbey

THE MANAGER

Page 5: Thamesmead Town v Waltham Abbey

our just rewards with a late goal to pull us back into the contest.

We made a couple of changes to the side and I thought young Adem did very well, just a week after signing for the club. Ross made his first start in the Ryman League as he steps up from U21s football, and he scored a great goal.

Tonight is another tough game against a Waltham Abbey side who have a maximum return so far. They’ve won three out of three and our tough start to life back in the Division One North continues, just as we knew that it would.

A win tonight gives us eight points from our opening four games, and two points a game will likely win you the league. So we’ve just got to keep ourselves going - we’re at home, and we have to make that

count, although it will be a very tough game.

There aren’t any new injuries for Alan and Carly to worry about, but we’re desperate to get Derek Duncan back. Derek is key for us, but he’s probably still a week or two away. Other bodies are startign to return now though, and Michael Spencer will also be back having missed Saturday for his brother’s wedding.

Today was also a sad one for the club as Terry Luthwaite was laid to rest. He really was a real friend of this club and always had a smile on his face. Hopefully three points for us tonight will ensure there is still a smile on there as he looks down on us from above.

Enjoy the game,Keith

TERRYHILL

Good evening everyone - firstly, can I welcome the Waltham Abbey players, officials and supporters to our new home of Sporting Club Thamesmead. We hope you enjoy your time with us and wish you a safe journey home.

It’s been a very difficult day for us today as the committe attended the funeral of Terry ‘Turnstile’ Luthwaite after his recent passing.

Although Terry was not a committee member as such, he was very much a key part of the club. He would help us in collecting the entrance money and putting the goals up on a matchday.

Terry was a good friend to all of us and was very much loved by everyone at the SCT. He would come in early before the game for his cup of tea - “no sugar, as I’m sweet enough already.”

He certainly loved his football and, although he was 74 years old, he would

also travel to away games to cheer on the Mead.

Knowing Terry, he will be looking down on us this evening and willing us to win against a very good Waltham Abbey side.

We came away from Sudbury on Saturday with a very creditable 3-3 draw following a last minute goal from Tyrus Gordon-Young.

Three more points this evening will keep us nicely placed in the table as it progresses through its formative stages, so get behind the lads.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“We took it to the last day having won six of our last seven games of the season, as well as Keith winning Manager of the Month, but it was not to be as those final results didn’t quite go our way”

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

May I welcome the directors, officials and players of Waltham Abbey to our new home Sporting Club Thamesmead, and I hope after your short stay and some refreshments you all have a safe journey home.

Well here we are playing our fourth game this season tonight and we have earned five points out of a possible nine.

Compare this with last season and taking into consideration the clubs we have had to play so far in the league I feel very encouraged.

Tonight’s game will be no different with Waltham Abbey arriving here with maximum points from three games, so we can expect a hard fight out there on the pitch if we are to increase our current points tally.

Whilst we do still have a few games before then, next Saturday we start our FA Cup journey this season by playing South Park; a club that plays in the Ryman South and, to date, has started strongly in their league - once again it will be a very hard match.

I always personally enjoy visiting clubs that you may not have had the pleasure of playing in your own league in either the FA Cup or FA Trophy, and in all my experience it has always been the case that all the players involved in these matches are always up that bit more for cup matches due to this unique experience.

With that in mind, I can personally look forward to a sedentary sixty-minute drive to South Park next Saturday to join the experience.

Off the field having now moved to these

fantastic facilities at the start of last season we can now at long last call the SCT our permanent home.

It took eight years of delays in building and, to be honest, it has taken a longer time than I expected to feel at home within the facilities, but I am sure it will happen in due course, especially as we have had nothing by admiration from all visiting teams on the facilities available so hopefully it will continue and put the club on the map.

I have been thinking about ideas of how to generate more involvement with the local community other than just the coaching that we provide within the local schools.

Yes, we do have the parents of the youth team players that we try to involve them within the club, but I do not see much of them watching the first team on matchdays for whatever reason, so we still have a lot of hard work to increase these matchday gates for the senior side.

If we are to run this club professionally we cannot rely always on the Directors supplying financial support.

I honestly believe that the only way we will get the local business world involved with this club in any way is that they are fully made aware of the great facilities that are here at SCT.

All of the facilities are here for the use

of the community and their local club, Thamesmead Town. Together with all of the youth and junior teams that play here at Bayliss Avenue, we all need their support - either as a sponsor, advertiser or even just as a business partner, and to achieve this I feel that I have to meet personally with these businesses face to face for it to work, so that campaign has started and will continue until I feel that I have exhausted the number of local businesses.

Another idea of mine is to get our club twinned with a foreign club so that all our teams can play each other home and away. This gives both sets of players the experience of visiting and playing a foreign club and, hopefully, could increase the use of our website to generate interest.

Perhaps this might even extend to forming a new Supporters group, something I believe is a must within all clubs that I have been involved in.

To date I have discussed the possibility of twinning with FBK Kaunas in Lithuania, Avenir Beggen in Luxemburg, and a couple of teams playing in Scandinavia and Germany.

Now let’s enjoy this evening’s game and hope that our positive start to the new campaign can continue.

WALTHAM ABBEY

The Mead take on the division’s early pacesetters this evening, as Paul Wickenden’s Waltham Abbey arrive at the SCT.

The Abbotts struggled to find form last time around before eventually finishing in eighteenth place, albeit comfortably clear of the bottom two sides who were relegated.

Despite heading into the season’s opener away to Aveley with a somewhat depleted squad - no fewer than six players were absent from Wickenden’s inaugral squad selection - a comfortable 2-0 win has set them on their way.

Two more victories have followed, a 3-2 win over Chatham and a 2-1 win against Romford respectively, and the Abbotts boss will be keen for his side to sustain their momentum in order to build a realistic push for the top five.

Considering the absentees, the Abbotts boss was understandably pleased to have gotten off to such a solid start. One factor that could be attributed to their positive start is the condition of the pitch at their Capershotts ground, with the turf having been relaid - and Wickenden held high praise for its condition.

“I’m over the moon to have got maximum points from our opening games - we’ve had so many players missing,” he explained to the Mercury.

“The pitch was an absolute pleasure for the players to play on. I had to pinch myself - it was almost surreal.”

The Essex side will be looking to extend their one-hundred percent start one game further today before returning to home soil against Barkingside at the weekend, so we’re sure to be in for another gripping encounter after the Mead’s entertaining start.

CLUB HISTORYWaltham Abbey Youth Club, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, first played football at “Capershotts” during the Second World War and in later years the club became known as firstly Waltham Abbey, then Abbey Sports. Both clubs gained numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League.

The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur under the leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was Mo (Maurice) Ward. The President was Capt. Larkin.

In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion – including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1.

Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Robinson and inside forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedicated treasurer of the club with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary.

Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new clubhouse was built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London Spartan League.

In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer

dropped the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years later the club reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their first season they won the title without losing a game and were again promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until season 2000–01.

Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combination to allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elected to the Essex Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy they finished in their highest position of 3rd.

In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including Cheshunt, Ware, and Hertford Town.

It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat Hoddesdon Town. In both 1996–97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season) they beat St Margaretsbury.

In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan South Midlands Challenge Trophy.

Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built. A number of seats were purchased from Manchester City´s old Maine Road and these were installed during the summer of 2005 as the club strived to improve facilities on and off the field and move up the non-league pyramid.

On 2 May 2009, the Abbott’s capped off a successful 2008–09 season by beating Concord Rangers 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to win the Isthmian League Division 1 North Play-off’s. They played in the Isthmian League Premier Division for the first time in their history in 2009–10. However, despite winning the last two games of their season, they finished 21st and were relegated back to Isthmian League Division 1 North for the 2010–11 season.

ALANWOODWARD

Good evening and welcome back to the second home game of the season here at the SCT.

Well, we started the season off with a win against a very good Barkingside team in what was certainly a hard-fought encounter.

We were lucky to go in at half-time even in the game, but we came out much stronger and just about deserved all three points.

We moved onwards to Cheshunt on the Tuesday night a few days later, and came away with a well-earnt point. It was a big pitch up there and I think it was a good point - Cheshunt will cause a lot of sides trouble when they play their home games this season, and we did well to come home with something.

I think we ought to have won the game on Saturday as we travelled to Sudbury, eventually bringing back a 3-3 draw.

There was some inept officiating in

my opinion which almost affected us even taking home the point, but it was a brilliant game and we were unfortunate not to secure an extra two points.

We have to push on this evening and try to maintain our early unbeaten start. This is a good squad that the Gaffer has out together and if we can stick together then I’m sure that we will be fine.

On the injury front, Derek Duncan’s swollen knee is a lot better now and we’re working on strengthening it. Hopefully, he can return to the squad in a week or so.

There are possibly ten clubs that could be in the shake up at the end of the season, so it is going to be one hell of a ride - let’s just hope we can put ourselves into the mix as well.

BARKINGSIDE

Roberts, Gordon-Young

Poku

Saturday 9th August 2014 | Ryman League Division One North | MOTM: Simon Glover

Mike Green reports

It took a moment of true inspiration from Tyrus Gordon-Young to settle what was a disappointing opening game but Thamesmead Town wont care as for the first time since they became a Ryman League club, the Mead had won an opening day fixture…

Barkingside exploded out of the blocks and were all over the home side like a rash for the opening 40 minutes and but for two fine saves from Rob Budd – one to deny Calvin Poku and one to deny Steve Carvell – added to the two free headers that sailed over the Mead bar from corners and the visitors should really have been out of sight by half time. Yet despite all the pressure, the visitors only had Calvin Poku’s looping 19th minute header to show for their dominance.

It was an opening 40 minutes that baffled Thamesmead boss Keith McMahon, He said, “We looked nervous and I don’t know why? We were without (Lewis) Tozer and Derek (Duncan) and had Jack Hopkins playing his first football since the end of last season – he’s in for an op on his cruciate on Monday, but I just cant explain it. We were really poor first half and really could have gone in two or three down and if we have had we would have had no complaints.”

Yet incredibly, the home side came in level – Gordon-Young’s ball into the box was flicked on by Hopkins to the arriving Sean Roberts at the far post, and Roberts expertly steered his header wide of a statuesque Chris Clark in the Barkingside goal and into the corner of the net.

“It was the first time we strung three passes together and it was a good job for them that we scored when we did” admitted McMahon, “as it saved them from a monumental rollocking at half time. We still told them a few home truths and thankfully they listened to us and thankfully

16 THAMESMEAD TOWNv Waltham Abbey

ACTION REPLAY

Page 17: Thamesmead Town v Waltham Abbey

we improved after the break to dominate the game in a different way to which they dominated, but in the end we ran out I think deserved winners in the end.”

The second half saw the Mead as dominant in possession as the visitors had been in the first half without really testing keeper Clark – that was until Gordon-Young’s moment of brilliance on 77 minutes.

Cutting inside from the left, he held off two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable drive beyond the reach of the Barkingside keeper and into the net.

It would have been worse for the visitors as Clark pulled off a stunning save to deny sub Adem Ramadan following a great run and pass by Stuart Zanone and then in stoppage time, Barkingside’s afternoon was complete when Clark was given a red card by referee Crowhurst for handball outside of his area as he attempted to intercept another Zanone square ball. From the resulting free kick, stand in keeper

Joe Ellul made a decent block to deny Zanone’ drive as the rebound was sliced well wide.

“The goal was coming as we were just getting on top – he’s worked hard, he’s come inside and hit a good shot which has flown into the net and got us the winner. To be fair, I think we should have had another couple towards the end. But at the end of the day we’ve got to put the performance behind us and get the result which we did. There have been some funny results today again – its three points and we move onto Cheshunt on Tuesday,” McMahon said.

The Mead boss concluded, “It was hard to adjust back down to this level after a season in the Premier. With no disrespect to the teams that are in the division, its a lot easier as you get more time and you tend to get away with some mistakes which we didn’t last season, and that’s something that the players have got to get to grips with. I was pleased that we kept going and didn’t stop and showed a little bit of passion to win but we’ve got to build on today and I’m sure we will!”

The Vanarama Conference is well documented for being notoriously difficult to get out of for League clubs making the drop into the Non-League game – but it seems relegated clubs are also finding it extremely tough lower down the Pyramid too.

You have to go back a decade to the 2003-04 season for the last side to bounce straight back up to the Football League. Carlisle United beat Stevenage in the play-off final to end their brief stay and Shrewsbury Town also went up via the play-offs the year before after relegation from the Elite 92.

There are a myriad of reasons why no club has done a Carlisle or Shrewsbury for ten years: the Conference has become stronger; more Non-League sides investing heavily in search of the Football League and League clubs often don’t react well to the transition being only a few.

Maybe it is having a knock-on effect further down the leagues as on first glance, most relegated sides did not kick off 2014-15 particularly well.

Before you say it, I know we’ve only had one game. I’m not saying all of these clubs are going to endure miserable campaigns but it’s clear some will be nearer the bottom of the table than the top come May.

While Bristol Rovers kicked off the Non-League season with a 0-0 draw with Grimsby Town on BT Sport, Torquay United fared slightly worse, losing 3-1 at Gateshead. Not the trip they would have wanted on the opening day but maybe the eye opener everybody needed down on the Riviera.

In the Vanarama Conference North, fancied Tamworth picked up a point at Harrogate

while poor Hyde, who won just once last season, kicked off with a home defeat against Oxford City.

Hereford United, who were demoted rather than relegated, started their Southern Premier campaign with a loss at home to St Neots while both Dorchester and Histon also lost after coming down from Step 2.

It was a slightly more positive start for Tonbridge Angels in the Ryman Premier but they are most certainly the exception rather than the rule.

Relegated sides at Step 4 did slightly better with Bedford winning in the Southern Central and AFC Totton in the Southern South & West while Thamesmead were victorious in Ryman North.

Regardless of whether it’s the multi millions of the Premier League or the more modest

figures of the grass-roots game, money talks in football.

Often the clubs with the bigger budgets finish at the top and those with tighter purse strings tend to struggle.

So when sides do go down, they are often still nearer the bottom of the ‘budget league’ in their new divisions.

There are, of course, exceptions and money isn’t everything but managers will always tell you that their budget is never enough!

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League finally kicks off today so if you support a newly relegated side – Workington, Droylsden, Stafford Rangers or Stocksbridge Park Steels – good luck... you’re probably going to need it!

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support. We’ve listed the award winners from last season for this issue, but who will begin this season’s list this evening?

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple - the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets. You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the complete season in one go.

Rob, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease, explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but she fought the disease all the way. She initially beat breast cancer, and even though it had spread to her lymph gland we thought she’d beaten it again.

“We then discovered she had a brain tumour and wasn’t given a good diagnosis. Doctors were amazed that she appeared to have won again against all the odds, but the cancer had sadly spread to another part of her brain and it was too late. She’d fought for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she touched everyone that came into her life. She was only 35 when she passed in October 2012, leaving her husband and two children.”

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

BRENTWOODSaturday 23rd August

Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Follow the M25 north through the Dartford Tunnel and continue until you reach J28 - take the fourth exit for the A1023 signposted Brentwood.

Remain on this road for a while as it turns into the High Street and, when the station is signposted for your right, bear left at the lights - remaining on the A1023 signposted for Shenfield. Immediately turn right at the small roundabout as you go round the corner.

Remain on this road until the end, turning left. Again, take an immediate right at the next roundabout and, just after going beneath the A12 bridge, the Brentwood Centre will appear on your right.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT in six days’ time, for the visit of Cray Wanderers on Monday 25th August.

It’s the first return of a familiar side on Bank Holiday Monday as Cray Wanderers, a side who were also relegated from the Ryman Premier last season, come back to take on the Mead once more.

In the same fixture last season at the end of August, the Mead picked up their first win of the campaign in a 4-3 win over the Wands, and Keith McMahon will be hoping for a similar result next week.

It was a challenging year for Keith Bird’s side, losing thirty-four of their forty-six games as they never really got going. And, with three defeats from three so far having finished last season with six straight losses, that momentum has shown no signs of halting as yet as the Wands struggle to find their feet.

Indeed, ten goals have sailed past the Wands in those opening three games and the Mead will be looking to show no remorse in delivering a similar result on Monday afternoon.

Bird’s men face two home games this week before they visit the SCT though, and they will be keen to ensure that their season is up and running before the Bank Holiday encounter.
