Preface

The first era of globalization was born of empire and industry in the late 19th century. With cheaper transportation and mass production, goods no longer had to be made near to where they were consumed. Aided by these advances, the British Empire effectively became one massive free trade zone. The United States eventually inherited that globalized, battle-scarred world soon after the Second World War and began to engineer what would become the second stage of globalization.

If the first stage of globalization was marked by empire, the second one came out of a new international order backed by the United States. New forms of communication allowed for production to be moved even farther away from market. Commerce could be conducted with a greater speed too than ever before. We have seen in this era globalization the rise of transnational supply chains, the information revolution, and institutions such as the World Trade Organization.

A third era of globalization is slowly coming into view some twelve years into the new century. It seems to involve the rise of regional powers throughout the world, commensurate with rapid growth in their respective economies (think of China, Nigeria, Brazil, Indonesia, and others). It is a healthier, wealthier, more interconnected world built on a foundation of high technology. As with any sort of global change, there will be disruption and confusion. To help us identify what exactly the second stage of globalization may be morphing into, McKinsey has identified five key trends:

- The "great rebalancing" toward what Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs calls the "growth markets." The result will be a greater middle class and relentless innovation in products and markets.

- The need for even greater economic productivity in developed markets, which in turn will drive the bulk of their innovation.

- The global inter-connectivity of "capital, goods, information, and people" is fostering new ideas and ways of doing business, while also driving greater instability.

- A greater focus on matching demand for the world's critical resources with their supply.

- Rising pressure on free market-oriented governments due to societal and demographic changes, coupled with the rise of state-driven capitalism in the emerging markets.

About the host: San Beda College Philippines

San Beda College (SBC) is a private Roman Catholic Benedictine college run by the Benedictine monks in the Philippines. It is located in Mendiola, Manila, for college and Taytay, Rizal for Elementary and High School. It was founded in 1901 primarily to "defend the Catholic battlements in the field of education."San Beda, which was known then as El Colegio de San Beda, started as an all-boys grade school in Manila. It has since then expanded to a full college with both undergraduate and post-graduate degree offerings.

It has two other campuses: the San Beda College-Rizal (the largest San Beda campus in size) and the San Beda College Alabang (formerly known as St. Benedict College and Benedictine Abbey School) located in Alabang Hills Village in Muntinlupa City. Introduction

Cultural understanding in the study of management becomes increasingly important when the world activity becomes borderless. This condition encourages the study of management to develop new capabilities that can accommodate activities involving individuals whose different cultural backgrounds. Inspired by this urgency, School of Business and Management – ITB and Asia Research Center – University of St. Gallen, Switzerland created a cross-cultural learning program in which students can learn in real terms to work together in teams that have different cultural backgrounds, called Social Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) program. The hope is that they will gain practical knowledge about how to work within such multicultural team.

On the other hand, answering the increasing demand for social responsibility to the community, SEED program is directed into a community development program in which students are challenged to assist rural communities to develop themselves. Through this program students are expected to hone social awareness and social responsibility to the community.

This workshop, organized by the ASEAN Learning Network, aims to discuss cross-cultural learning program in the SEED program with experts and academics from Indonesian universities as an effort to enrich and to develop the context-based management studies.

Overview of Social Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Program

Social Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Program is a two weeks cross-cultural management learning program which is a result of collaboration between universities in South East Asia incorporated in the ASEAN Learning Network. Unlike other learning programs, SEED program offers learning activities through real experiences in a contextual manner in which the participants will learn to understand how to manage differences in cultural backgrounds that exist within multi-cultural organization.

This program is followed by students from different universities from different countries in Southeast Asia and Europe. They work together to conduct a study on the economic potentials of a community and develop business plans that can support the community development. Through this program, the participants have two cross-cultural learning process, namely among fellow participants and the community. Background differences that exist among the participants who come from different cultures and

countries encourage them to understand the culture for each student to work with each other. Cultural differences that exist between student participants and the local community also encourage learning for both students and local communities. To achieve these purposes, the participants live together in the middle of the community, learn their culture, life, habits, customs and local traditions.

The understanding of the characteristics of these communities is needed to recognize the economic and social potential possessed by the community in an effort to develop a business that can support the advancement of the community. Social enterprise or social enterprise is the key in understanding how economic development occurs. Developed business plan aims to build community-owned economic activities, conducted by the community, and for the advancement of the community. This is done to encourage economic development level in the region with hope in future the community can develop themselves to be economically more independent.

ASEAN Learning Network and SEED Program

School of Business & Management, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SBM ITB) as the fastest growing business school and part of ITB as one of the centre of academic excellence in Indonesia recognizes the importance of inter-cultural approach to the studies of management and economic. In cooperation with the Asia Research Centre at University of St. Gallen (ARC-HSG) “the top business school in Europe and number one in the German-speaking world” to promote the importance of cultural-based management studies and contribute this development to the society, on February 10, 2009, the ASEAN Learning Network (ALN) was established in Bandung, an organization that aims to attain practice-relevant academic excellence in a socially responsible way for participating institutions through culture-based management and economic research, teaching and practice-training. To achieve this vision, it develops culture-based research, training and practice-training projects and programs to equip students who will be socially responsible and culturally competent in the evolving context of Asia.

Until now ALN members consists of School of Business and Management – ITB (Indonesia), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (Malaysia), Ho Chi Minh City Banking University (Vietnam), Prince Songkla University (Thailand), University of Brunei Darussalam (Brunei), San Beda College (Philippines), De La Salle Collage (Philiphines), Parahyangan University (Indonesia), Thaksin University (Thailand), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Malaysia), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), Princess of Naradhiwas University (Thailand) and currently working to expand the network to other ASEAN countries. ALN apparently interested in the activities of SEED program and makes it one of its activities.

My expectations before and after joining the SEED Program

- Before joining the SEED Program I expected to be able to speak more fluently in English because communicating in English is the important tool of making a new connection with foreign friends.

- After joining the SEED Program I expected to adapt all of the knowledge in economical term from the SEED Program to be used in my life.

What did I gain from the SEED Program?

1. Life skills

The term ‘Life skills’ refers to the skills you need to make the most out of life. Life skills are usually associated with managing and living a better quality of life. They help us to accomplish our ambitions and live to our full potential. Any skill that is useful in our life can be considered a life skill. There is no definitive list of life skills. Certain skills may be more or less relevant to you depending on your life circumstances, your culture, beliefs, age, geographic location, etc. Some of the important life skills identified through Delphi method by WHO are Decision making, Problem solving, Creative thinking, Critical thinking, Effective communication, and Interpersonal relationships. Then, these life skills are the skills that I have learned and experienced from the SEED Program 2016 in the Philippines also.

2. International skills

Students with international skills have better job prospects when they graduate. In the new global economy, millions of cross-border relationships are developing in all sectors of the economy. Businesses of every size are being transformed – from large international corporations to small local firms in your hometown. All kinds of employers are purchasing goods and services from around the world, and they are asking their employees to work online with people located in other countries. A new workforce is emerging to manage these relationships, and its members have a new currency.

The word “International skills” in term of joining the SEED Program refers to the skills that I acquired from there; such as, leadership, bravery, being punctual, and responsibility. According to the pervious paragraph, if I am able to graduate with the higher level of the international skills in my life, I will be more successful person. So, the more international skills you have, the more you succeed.

Main problems of Thai students in the SEED Program

- English communication skill; we understand spoken English, but sometimes we are not able to reply in English because we are not familiar with communication in English as the time, so many Thai students took a few days to make familiar with speaking English. For me, as an English major student, I took a few hours to do so.

- Economical knowledge; because the core-content of SEED program is about economics, therefore no one from Thailand who is majoring in Economics so it is too difficult to us to be a master in Economics by spending a short time.

My experience from attending the SEED Philippines 2016

Have you ever heard about the SEED Program? If yes, how interesting it is? If not, I would like to let you know about this great program. Therefore, jointing the SEED Program in the Philippines taught me so many things, so I will separate them into three main aspects.

Firstly, I will detail about the SEED Program and my experiences in term of attending this 2–week program. I went to the Philippines with my friends and my juniors from the different faculties in TSU both Songkhla and Patthalung campus that were chosen by the university. After arriving in Manila which is the capital city of the Philippines, we went to the Linden Suits Hotel and stayed there for a few days in order to be prepared for the training program that was hosted by San Beda College. Then, we were boarding to Bauko, Moutain Province which is the SEED site. We stayed there for a week to finish our action plan. So, we have to spend four or five days for the data gathering in our own village. I was a member of the group 1 Wonderful Am-Am, the Am-Am village is located in the furthest, highest, and coldest location approximately 1240 meters above the sea level. The Am-am villagers were very friendly. They planted many kinds of crop; such as, lettuce, carrot, and cabbage. In addition, they can plant the crops, but the problem is they did not have the organization to deal with the problems that appeared from planting their crops. So, my group decided to help them by making an action plan for establishing the organization to them. Finally, we had finished the action plan and presented it to the governor of Bauko.

Page 22: Thaksin University Thailand Philippines 2016 report.pdfWith cheaper transportation and mass production, ... San Beda College offers programs in the fields of ... and law. At present,

18 Social Enterprise for Economics Development (SEED) Program 2016

Secondly, after joining this program what do I gain? I have gained so many things to adapt for using in my life. I learned to work under the pressure as a team work with the foreign friends, so working under the pressure after that couldn’t bother me anyway. Then, I have explored new way for my knowledge management in order to apply for my life in the university. Moreover, cross-cultural understanding is the priceless thing that I gained because if I don’t travel, I will not understand any aspect of being abroad together.

Lastly, I will let you know about my memorable impressions from this program. First, the Filipinos were very friendly and helpful. Next, the taste of food were very different from Thai food’s flavor, but I only my chance in the Philippines so I have to try. The weather in Manila is similar to Thailand, but the weather in Bauko, Mountain Province is quite different; the temperature in the daytime is approximately 20 degree Celsius. I really love the Filipino friends and everything there.

All in all, Social Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Program is the best program I have ever attended. As a result, I would recommend every undergraduate students to join the program if it is possible. You will be more valuable person after attending this program.

Recommendations

1. My recommendations to Thaksin University

As a this year participant, I want International Relation Office of Thaksin University to re-arrange new contents in the 10-day training program next year because of 2016- training program, we gained a few useful things and many useless things in term of economic. Why do I say that? Because the necessary and needed knowledge that we need to use in the Philippines are only about 7s, PESTLE, and SWOT Analysis that we need to use for producing an action plan as our final papers. On the other hand, the others point of knowledge in economical term that we have learned from the training program here; it was not useful at all. Moreover, communicating in English is very important that we need more time to attend in the English communication session. As a result, if we have 10 days for training program, we need to spend 5 days for focusing on the training in economical term and the others 5 days for practicing in the training in term of English communication.

2. My recommendations to the Philippines

There is no recommendation for the Sen Beda College in the Philippines because they are all professional in organizing the program.

Expectation before and after joining SEED Philippines 2016

- Before joining SEED Program, I expect to speak and use English confidently as I seldom have a chance to speak English with anyone in Thailand. Thus, I think this is a big opportunity that I can communicate with a lot of people coming from many countries. Also, I expect to gain good experiences and knowledge which I can apply to use in daily life.

- After joining SEED Program, I expect to be a confident person. Many Thai students, including me are dependent people: for example, when I go to restaurant, I have to bring friends to keep me company, so I think it’s quite bad behavior. However, at present I can do anything and go anywhere by myself. It’s unnecessary to be the dependent person any longer because of SEED Program. Moreover, I will apply all experiences and knowledge to make practical use in my university and in the real life as much as possible.

Advantages of joining SEED Philippines 2016

- I am able to practice English skills such as speaking and listening. - I am able to speak and use English confidentially. - I am able to communicate with a lot of people that come from many countries. - I am able to deal with difficult situations. - I am able to get good experiences that I can make practical use in the real life. - I am able to learn new culture and tradition. - I have had a lot of international friends. - I am confident to do anything and face with many situations. - I am able to solve unexpected problems. - I am able to share Thai culture with international participants.

Problems of Thai student in SEED Philippines 2016

- Most of Thai students are not good at English or some of us cannot speak English. I think it’s the biggest problem we have because being a participant in SEED Program has to communicate with the others by using only English. When we go on site, only language we use with villagers is English, for example. Sometimes some of us cannot even communicate with facilitators and international participants.

- Thai students often lack of confidence to do many things.

- Most of us don’t have any knowledge about Economics and Marketing in the specific way. In SEED Philippines 2016, it only focus on 7s, PESTLE, and SWOT Analysis for we have to make an action plan to make the new products. In addition, we always feel stressed by the time we have to discuss about three main things that I have mentioned above.

Discussion in a group

Experiences for sharing

- FoodWhen I was in the Philippines, I had to eat Filipino food inevitably. Also, I had to get used to with it. I found that the taste of Filipino food is quite tasteless for Thai people. Why did I say that? Because all Thai participants felt the same as me. On the other hand, if I would stay there longer, my tongue was accustomed to eating Filipino food possibly.

- Language

Filipinos are good at English. They can speak and use English professionally as if English was their first language. I was surprised since the first time I arrived at the airport because I can heard Filipinos spoke together by using English. Moreover, it’s not only English they can speak, but they can speak other languages also such as Tagalog, a little bit of Portuguese, dialects, and so on.

- Filipino’s personality

At the first time, I felt nervous to get into a conversation with Filipinos. Then after I have talked with them, they are very friendly like Thai people. I had two Filipinos as members in my group. They are talkative, and they can speak English so well. After SEED Program is finished, we still keep in touch.

Culture and tradition

I have learnt about culture and tradition in the Philippines. They are different from Thailand because the Philippines used to be colonial by Portugal and America, so their culture and tradition are influenced by those countries. Somehow, they still have old tradition like traditional dance in Mountain Province.

Recommendations

- As I experienced with several situations in SEED Philippines 2016, I would like International Relation Office of Thaksin University to adjust the gist of the matter in 10-day training program next year because the main contends that we have to use in SEED Philippines are 7s, PESTLE, and SWOT Analysis. Additionally, English are necessarily needed since we have to communicate with people that are different nationalities, languages, countries, and so on. Therefore, if we have more time to practice English in 10-day training program before getting to the Philippines, I think it would be better.

My Expectation before Joining SEED Program

1. I think that I may practice my English skills such as listening, speaking, and writing.

2. I think that I may learn the new culture in the Philippines such as eating, life-style, and tradition.

3. I think that I may learn the new knowledge about economic and marketing that I never learn before because this program has to use them for adapting with some problem which we will help some villagers.

4. I think that I may know some foreign friends who come from many countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, and the Philippines.

The Suggestions

1. I would like the International Relations Section Department to take course about economic and marketing that is rather than this year.

2. Each faculty should choose some students who have their English skill for communication well and have confidence for speaking.

3. The students are practiced about thinking, analyzing, and doing activities real rather than lecture in the class.

The Interested Things in the Philippines

1. Bagus Sisig is the local food in the Philippines. It is alike Thai dressed salad, but it is fried. It is sour taste, and you should eat with jasmine rice. It was the first food that I ordered it to eat.

2. Torun is the Filipino dessert. It is alike Roti in Thailand. It is some flavor and stuffs with banana. I ate it when I visited San Beda College during taking a break from the conference.

3. Pastill is milk candy as Tungmay in Thailand. It is sweet. I ate it when I stayed at Sta. Catalina Spirituality Center.

4. Jeepney is the most popular of public transportation in the Philippines as Tuk-Tuk in Thailand. They are known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a ubiquitous symbol of Philippine culture and art. I used it when I visited Bagiuo Market and Mines View Park.

Page 33: Thaksin University Thailand Philippines 2016 report.pdfWith cheaper transportation and mass production, ... San Beda College offers programs in the fields of ... and law. At present,

5. Takik is a Bontoc courtship dance performed by a man and a woman. At least 5 other male dancers accompany them, providing the music and rhythm for the dance. They line up, starting with the head gong-player, behind the male dancer. The line of dancers form circular or spiral dancers, with the head gong-player usually displaying more elaborate steps than the accompanists behind him. I watched this performance twice. First, I watched it at Sadsadan village. Second, I watched it in cultural night.

6. White tomato or Spanish tomato is the local vegetable in Mountain Province. It is very sour as light mango in Thailand. This was my favorite vegetable that I like when I was in Mountain Province. I ate it when I worked late.

The Problems and Obstacles

1. The Philippines was where I first experienced real culture shock. For example, the traffic in the Philippines that I felt very afraid because there are a little traffic lights. When I walked across the road on the pedestrian crossing, the drivers that used the road, they did not care some people who walked across the road. In addition, this country did not have an overpass, so it was very dangerous for the people who walked across the road here. On the other hand, Thailand also had an overpass rather than the Philippines. In my opinion, the traffic in Thailand was very safe rather than the Philippines. 2. Using language for communication, there were many participants who joined this program from many countries, and they did not use English in their dairy. When everybody was in the Philippines and had to do activities together, everybody had to use English for communication which there were a lot of problems for using English. First, the accents of each country were very different, and some accents were very difficult for understanding. For instance, the accent of the Filipino that pronounced some words which were different from me that I did not use to listen before, letter T especially. They pronounced “T” as “ต” in Thai which was very difficult for listening and understanding. Second, my English skill was rather weak because when I communicated with the foreign participants, I could not answer some questions which they asked because some vocabularies that I did not know it. I thought that I should remember a lot of vocabularies. Third, the native languages of each countries made me headache. For example, I went shopping with Indonesian, Malaysian, and Thai friends. These people could speak Malay language expect me. When they talked, they liked changing language during talking. Sometimes, my brain could not process suddenly, so I should learn Malay language for third language.

3. Eating some foods in the Philippines, all foods were the western food because this county used to be colony of Spanish and American. Moreover, the taste of most Filipino food was sweet. On the other hand, I liked eating some spicy foods, but this country hardly had some spicy food. Although the Philippines had some spicy food, the level of spicy taste lost Thai food because the Filipino chill was not rather spicy. When I wanted to eat Thai food, I would cook some spicy instant noodle which I brought it from Thailand.

4. The weather in the Philippines often changed. When I was in Manila, the weather was normal as Thailand. After that, I traveled to Baguio and Mountain Province where were very cold, and I hardly felt cold before. Furthermore, it also rained. Someday, it was hot while I visited the village. These things made me be sick because the weather often changed.

Page 35: Thaksin University Thailand Philippines 2016 report.pdfWith cheaper transportation and mass production, ... San Beda College offers programs in the fields of ... and law. At present,

31 Social Enterprise for Economics Development (SEED) Program 2016

5. The environment in the village (Sadsadan) had many flies because there were much chicken dung. Normally, there were many flies in hot season in Thailand; on the other hand, there were many flies every season in Mountain Province. When I visited here, I had to use my hand to close my mouth and nose because the flies was carriers of cholera.

6. Traveling was very difficult because it was the curved way that made me be carsick. The distance from Manila to Mountain Province was very far, so I had to buy some snack that was sour during traveling.

7. It was very important for this program which was knowledge about economic, marketing, and agriculture, but I was the English major student that never learned them before. Although International Relations Section Department took these course, they was not enough which helped them. When members of my group discussed and analyzes them, I sit silently because I did not have knowledge about them. Sometimes, I felt stress that I could not help them everything. One day, I visited the village with the members of my group, and then I thought that I must grope to do something which was beneficial. Then I could grope the activity that was teaching English for the children which was very difficult because I had to use English to communicate, and it was the first time that I taught it abroad. Although I could not help about developing the village, I could also help about education of the village.

The Benefits from SEED Program

1. I got to practice to traveling by plane without teachers because traveling by plane was the complicated steps since checking in until getting on a plane.

2. I got to learn and know about the Filipino culture in many ways such as eating, life-style, and important tradition of the Philippines. Moreover, I also learned about history of the Philippines.

3. I got to practice communication by using English because I was the English major student, so I should communicate with foreigners. After finishing this program, I felt that my English skill for communication was better than ever.

4. I got to learn about the folkways of Sansadan village. For example, I tried to plant some carrots which I never do before.

5. I got to know basic knowledge about economic and marketing although I never learned them such as SWOT matrix, 7S, and business plan.

6. I got to learn about teamwork process with foreigners, and I practiced for solving a problem when I worked with them.

The first day that I had stayed in Manila, the Philippines. I was very excited because the first time which I visited here. Manila was not different from Bangkok because the traffic was heavy as Bangkok. When I arrived at the Linden Suites Hotel, I ate the Filipino food that was Bagus Sisig (the fried fish mix spicy sour cream sauce, and eat with some rice). It was very delicious. In addition, my accommodation was very wide and comfortable. Furthermore, it was located in Manila that I could see the view of city.

After finishing from dinner, I visited at SM Megamall. It was general mall, but I was very confused for paying because there are two kinds of cart. The first cart was general carts that used in daily, and the second cart was the buckets on the carts. You could not use the buckets for paying only, so you had to put the buckets on the carts. When you paid, you must allocate the counter for paying. Lastly, thanks the Filipino who advised me about paying. Furthermore, I found the cup of Mama Tom Yam Kung of Thailand there. I was shocked because the cost of this mall was more expensive than Thailand (P40 = about 30.80 baht).

It was very different from Thailand because this market was very wide and clean. Moreover, I visited Mines View Park that was the point of view of Baguio city. It was on the mountain. After arriving at the airport They pick you up at the airport, Mr Joel G. Work each day The village itself has a lot of growing to be a major CAYOTE KAMOTE FLAKE cucumbers are grown for sale and do not have a translation.

My expectations before and after joining the SEED Program

Before join SEED - Personally I love to do something good for people something that can help people

who have a lower quality of life so I think that this project is a good answer - I expect that this project is my chance to go abroad, cultural exchange and improve

my English skills. After join SEED

- After I come back from SEED I think that is right I’m good in English in my university and in my faculty but not good enough to use in working so I think that should be some project that similarly with SEED to be a chance for people who want to improve language skill.

- I expect that my university should have a good prepare more than now because I don’t anything when I go to SEED what is a main work in this project what I need to do right there in this project so I think that next time Thaksin university will have a good prepare in next SEED project

What did I gain from the SEED Program?

- I can get a lot of experience from this project. - I do something that I never use to do before. - I can develop my English skills. - This project make me realize that I need to learn a lot of things and gain a lot of

knowledge. - I accept and understand my weakness and I try to develop it from the experience

that I get. - This project teach me to work by group - I can practice my assertive in a lot of way for example speak English language with

people from other country, to share your idea in your group mate etc. .

- I make me know how to condescending and adaptation with people from other country that have different culture.

- It make me know how to work under pressure and how to cope it.

Main problems of Thai students in the SEED Program

- Personally my English skill has a little problem because I lag of experience in using English language additionally I have a little problem in communication.

- SEED Project is using economic knowledge and analysis skill to working but I study in physical education so my major is not connect with this project

My experience from attending the SEED Philippines 2016

Seed project is a Social Economic Exchange Development project it about to build a business by write a business plan and it has to connect with the problem that we have to find information from the area in our responsible for additionally. It look like it not easy anymore for me to do something like this but that not mean I can’t do or learn anything, now I going to share about my experience and something that I got from the seed project in Philippine

At first I think that the seed project is about you go to the countryside and help them by using your idea the create or build something for them or give them a knowledge but this is wrong but not all of it that I miss understanding but your idea need to have somethings to support by data gathering from interview, observation etc. and your data need a research to support or guarantee and you need to separate you data to find what is internal factor and external factor that affected to business, what is your opportunity and threat in proceed business plan

And a lot of things that I need to do in this project and I don’t want to explain it too much so all of thing that I want to say is I didn’t expected to do something like this and I always think that a conversation is gonna difficult because it is my first time and first chance for me to go to abroad but the work that we need to do is a true difficult thing so that mean the way to use English skills isn’t conversation only it also mean you can use English skills in working and when I go to Philippine a conversation is not a problem but the work that I need to do is a problem because I study in Physical education I haven’t study about economic or business before and I can speak English a little bit then Can you imagine that what it will happen to me?

But it not worst same to my thinking even though the work is very difficult but I can through it I can make it I always think that I’ll try my best If I do my best there is nothing to be scare I do everything that I can do I share everything that I’m thinking I share every my idea to my group mate and my facilitator about my problems they listen and understand my problem they help me to solve my problem and I can’t explain my feeling to my group mate and facilitator in other word except “thank you”. Coming to this project is not a nightmare but it is the taste of life the feeling that you can through a difficult things is cool and no one can take away from you, friendship that you met there is the best thing that I can get it in this project you can make friends from other country It isn’t going to happen often, this is a good thing, right?

Recommendations

To My university

- I think that university should give more information to participant to be a guideline for how they prepare themselves to join the project.

- About training should give more knowledge for participant and knowledge should connect with the project that participant have to do and area that participant have to go.

- The interview should give the data to participant what they need to do when they join the project.

- Should have test for the participant because they will know that they are ready for this project or not.

To the Philippine - The progress in Philippine is very good they have a nice time table and always have

announcement every day and when have some changing in time table - The intendant’s working is very good

Advantages of joining SEED Philippines 2016

There are three main parts of advantages that I gain from joining SEED Program. Firstly, I learned the new knowledge, for example, I learned how to analyze 7S and PESTEL and the most important thing that I could use English to communicate with others all the time. There was not much chance that let me to speak Thai except when I spend time with Thai friends. Moreover, Filipino friends taught me how to speak Tagalog. For instance, Manop po means Hello, Salamat Po means thank you, and Mahal gita means I love you.

Secondly, I could see, smell, touch new culture. I learned how to eat Philippines Food. I have tried many different kinds of food, even though some of them were very strange. I heard when they spoke. I could touch their kindness. I went to Leseb to see how they live and help them to develop their community.

Lastly, the relationships from community, facilitators, staff, international friends, and San Beda friends make this program become valuable. We always help each other. Even though nowadays we are too far to spend time together, but my friends from San Beda College still connect me via social network, such as, Facebook and E mail. And next year they are planning to come to Thailand. This can show that our friendship is never end.

Expectation before and after joining SEED Philippines 2016

Before joining SEED Philippines 2016

There are three main expectations that I expect for, that are to improve the knowledge, to expand the experiences, and to be a better person.

First of all I expect to improve my knowledge, besides studying from the letters in the book, sitting on the chair, and doing a great numbers the activities, learning outside the classroom is another extremely great approach. I think if I have a chance to join this program I could communicate with various people from different countries that mean all of the knowledge would be used in the real situations.

Secondly, I expect to expand the experiences by living with others, because we have to spend approximately a month with unknown friends and we have to exchange cultures of each others, for example, food, language, and lifestyle. These could make us gain a lot of experiences.

Finally, I expect to be the better person. According to the main purpose of SEED Project is to help each other in economics way. Even though I not too much good in economics but I really want to help others. And in my opinion to stay among many people, everyone must be leader, too

After joining SEED Philippines 2016

According to my expectations above, after joining SEED Philippines 2016, I gain many valuable things and it’s over my expectations.

I could improve my knowledge, I communicated with various people from different countries, for example, I had met many friends and all of them were speak English, so when I have to speak with them English was needed. We couldn’t use Thai to ask what we want too.

Then I have got many amazing experiences by living and spending time with others, my roommates were from Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, so I had learnt many different cultures from them. Their lifestyle was not similar with Thai people. Indonesian friends were able to speak English very well; they were also good in Economics even thought they were only 18 years old. Vietnam friends were speaking a bit loud and some of their behaviors were not too much nice, like the way they used the bedroom or bathroom. Japanese was very lovely but some of her lifestyle made me shock, for example, if she wanted to change her cloths

Page 61: Thaksin University Thailand Philippines 2016 report.pdfWith cheaper transportation and mass production, ... San Beda College offers programs in the fields of ... and law. At present,

57 Social Enterprise for Economics Development (SEED) Program 2016

she will change it immediately; she won’t go inside the restroom. So, approximately two weeks that I have spent time with international friends, we had exchanged many cultures of each others.

Moreover, I did many activities there, like, gathered data from the community, asked them the questions, analyzed SWOT Matrix, 7S, and PESTEL, and etc made me become braver and be the leader than I used to be in Thailand.

Problems of Thai student in SEED Philippines 2016

- Thai students still afraid to speaking English, some of the reasons might be worried about grammatical features.

- Thai students were not able to use knowledge about Economics and financial well because we were not learning it enough before going there.

- Thai students were not courage enough to express their opinion or what they were actual think.

Experiences for sharing

From the beginning I wonder how I could survive in this country because it is dramatic different from Thailand in many parts, for example, language, food, the way of life, and etc.

The first day at Manila was not too much interesting because there was nothing much to do because we arrived the airport in the noon, so we had to stay free in this day. The days after that were very exciting. I met many friends from San Beda College and International friends from different countries, such as, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan. We needed to work together to conduct a study on the economic potentials of a community and develop business plans that can support the community development. Cultural differences that exist between student participants and the local community also encourage learning for both students and local communities. All of participants must live together in the middle of the community. We learn their culture, life, habits, customs and local traditions.

I was in group five, there are one facilitator who name is Sir Jojo, two friends from Thaksin University Pattalung campus (Ter) and Prince of Songkla Univerisity Pattani campus (Santa), and two kind friends from San Beda College (Trisha and Boss). Each groups would have their own vehicle, our group’s vehicle was one ancient blue van with the smart van driver. It took approximately one hour to LESEB community. Leseb was the community

58 Social Enterprise for Economics Development (SEED) Program 2016

which located in the mountain. The people in this community were very kind and generous. They looked after us like we were a part of their family. They usually worked form the Baranggay Hall (Meeting hall) to welcome us every day.

Before we started data gathering, they would bring us the warm coffee which was planted by themselves and many different kinds of snack and sweet that I have never eaten in Thailand. In the morning, we asked them many questions to gain the important information of the community. During lunch time, all of the members from group five and delegates should have lunch together, the local food was cooked by them and the tasted was too tasteless because Filipinos do not eat spicy food. In the afternoon we went to the garden and visited their house. We could see how they live and survive without any convenience and technology. After we know all of the information we must analyze that information to 7s and PESTEL Matrix. It was very hard because I have never taken this course before, but my facilitator and Filipino friends taught us how to do that. We worked hard every night until the day that we presented to the delegates and communities. After we finished this project, we travelled to Manila and shopped. The last night at the Linden Suites was a bit sad because we have to say goodbye to all friends. My today’s feeling was different with the first day. The relationship between the facilitators, group members, San Beda friends, international friends and other participants were hard to cut down. Even though we would not see each other in Philippines again, but I’m sure that in the future we would meet again.

Recommendations

I would like to recommend in some points.

- Thai students need to be brave more to use English to communicate than they used to.

- Thai students should learn more about economics before departure to aboard. - Even though English is not our native language, we have to practice as much as

possible. - For next year, the students who will pass the exam and interview need to be more

effective than us. Because the main problem that we forced was we were not have much knowledge about economics.

My expectation before and after joining the SEED program Before joining the SEED project I hope that the first thing I need. Is English and cultural

exchange with other countries joined the project. And resolve the problem, the villagers in the Philippines. Include learning living with foreigners and learn to live in a strange place. And after participating in SEED I expect I can speak English better than the original. The knowledge gained from the program to apply in everyday life. What did I gain from the SEED program? The SEED participated in this project is to learn to solve problems. Learn about marketing and economics, which are never studied before. To meet foreign friend who are friendly. Everyone is helping each other. And lucky to have a lovely roommate wake up in the morning. And that is more important. Be part of the solution to the villagers in Philippines.

Main problems of Thai students in the SEED program

Most of the students in Thailand Is not enough knowledge about the marketing and economy, including the use of English language as the 7S and SWOT analysis. Since joining this project. Requires knowledge of this enough. Thailand is one problem that students lack knowledge in this field. The some students do not speak English to me. It has the ability to communicate well.

My experience from attending the SEED Philippines 2016 Throughout the course of the program for two weeks can be considered as an

experience that can’t be purchased anywhere else. The Philippines is a country known as a country where most people speak English. And the province has to solve a province in the Philippines is very beautiful. People are lovely and very cold the place. The food might not taste of Thai people since many Filipino eating mostly tasteless. To learn languages such as Tagalog, Malay, Vietnamese, etc., constitutes a language exchange on the other. Know that this is a learning experience and has been very valuable in a lifetime.

Recommendation

Participation in the next program. The English language to Communicate with people. I would like International Relation Office of Thaksin University the focus is on using SWOT and S7 are used to solve problems.
