7134 Collection Development

Spring 2010

March 3, 2010

I selected Southside Elementary school for the site of my collection development. South Side

elementary school is located on the south side of Augusta which is located in Richmond County.

Richmond County is located on the east edge of Georgia boarding South Carolina. The county seat of

Richmond County is Augusta which is the second largest city in Georgia. South Side is situated in a

community that ranges from lower to middle income families. The school has 379 students of which 80%

are black, 17% are white and 3% are multiracial. There are two administrators, 23 teachers and three

custodial workers. The school has one computer lab with a promethean board, projector and thirty

computers. The school was the recipient of a technology grant that allowed the school to purchase a

promethean board and projector for each third, fourth and fifth grade class room. The school was also

able to purchase an Elmo and three sets of computerized clickers, one for each upper level grade. The

library has 4127 titles which is ten books for each student.

The topic of space is covered in three grade levels, Kindergarten, second and fourth. At South

Side there are five Kindergarten classes with 87 students. There are no ESOL or special needs students at

the school at this time. However, there are 15 students in Kindergarten that are considered slow learners

that are performing below grade level. Twenty percent of the students are performing above grade level;

the remaining students are performing at grade level. In the second grade there are three classes with

sixty students. There are eleven students with EIP’s. The students range from ADD to specific learning

disabilities. There are twelve percent of the students that are performing above grade level. In fourth

Page 2: Thajuana pugh

grade there are three teachers with 68 students. There are 15 students with EIP’s and ten students that are

performing above grade level. The students with EIP’s are pulled out of class for extra help.

The school does not subscribe to any databases. The school subscribes to several sites that allow

students to practice skills.

In Kindergarten the standard, SKE1, requires the students to be able to have a basic

understanding of the sky during the day and night. The students must be able to describe and

classify objects that are seen in the sky during the day and during the night. Students should also

know that the sun provides the Earth with light and heat. Some of the projects students are

required to complete are drawings with descriptions of what is in the sky during the day and at

night. The students will make verbal reports of observations and in school experiments. To

assist teachers complete this lesson there are four non-fiction books.

The second grade standards, S2E1 and S2E2, require the students to observe the position

of the sun and moon throughout the year. The students will make sun dials and record the

description of how the shadow has changed in journals. The students make journals to chart the

shaped of the moon over a period of time and charts to forecast the sunrise and sunset. To assist

teachers and students complete this section of study there are seven non-fiction books and one

video.

The fourth grade standard, S4E1 and S4E2, require the students to the physical

characteristics of stars, star patterns and planets. The students are also required to model the

motion and position of our solar system and to be able to explain the phases of the moon. The

students will create graphic displays, models and written reports of the seasonal changes on

Earth, the phases of the moon and the phases of the moon. To assist teachers and students

complete this section of study there are 27 non-fiction books and one video.

Average Age

Average Age

Page 4: Thajuana pugh

Upon evaluating the library’s space selection I found several strengths and weakness. I

found that the average age of the space non-fiction collection is over seven years and are out

dated. The average fiction is twelve years old and upon visual inspection many are beginning to

become worn and should have been replaced already according to Richmond County’s policy.

The circulation report also showed that there has been very little circulation of the fiction books

on space. The circulation of the nonfiction books may be increased because of student

projections.

After speaking with teachers I found that many would like the collection updated because

of inaccurate information. The teachers have also requested software that the students can use

for interactive activities. I found that the students would like the books to have more pictures.

The students would like more books about spaceships to be added to the collection.

When compared to the curriculum the subject of these books focus on the topics the

students must learn. There were books that discussed the planets, the sun, moon and the solar

system in general. While there are titles that cover space travel and the voyages to the moon

they are not the bulk of the collection. However, in light of the new theories about Pluto many

of the books have inaccurate information.

Collection Strength, Weakness and Needs

The collection strength numerous non-fiction books on space. The collection has videos

on space.

The collection weakness, many of the numerous non-fiction books are old, out dated and

worn. The collection should have more fiction and multicultural books for the students. There

Page 5: Thajuana pugh

are no E-books or computer software for the students to use on space. The collection has few

videos which are outdated.

The collection needs to be updated because according to Richmond county weeding

policy science books should be updated to remain current with existing information. The policy

also states that weeding should take place when books are worn in appearance.

The collection should be updated to include multicultural selections. The school is 80%

Black, 17% white, and 3% multiracial. To better understand the world the students need to be

introduced to other cultures.

The collection does not have any e-books or books on tape or CD. The teachers have

requested these for the students to help with low level readers.

Budget Summary

After extensive research I have determined that to bring this collection up to 2010

standards I need $ 3, 994.34. These funds will allow me to address all of the collection’s needs

starting with bringing current titles with incorrect information about the solar system. I will be

able to add books on tape/CD. I will also be able to increase the media center’s technology base

with a quality computer program, several DVD’s and several e-books. The funds will allow me

to increase the collection with over 130 books with multicultural titles.
