Judy in Texas03-01-201510:21 AM ET (US)IP: 68.94.12.214 I'll go first with the photo of the "CANE" pattern square salt I thought
was Currier and Ives awhile back. I've found other Cane patterned salts in my collection and because they have sterling rims or pedestals with English marks I assume they are from the UK. This one may be an import also.

I could not believe how difficult it was for me to find and open salt that was square, Lots of rectangles, but not many squares in the sets I collect. #D1464, 62 shillings. I am too lazy to find the catalog page, it was just for a jobber not a maker anyway.

Three square Hartford salts? As PJ indicated in her posting #52, the left one is supposed to be the master, it is 2 1/8 inches square and 2 3/4 inches tall. It is pictured in Coddington 25-2-3. The middle one is 2 1/2 inches square and 2 1/4 inches tall, about the right size to be a master salt. The top is not scalloped like the other two, so may have had a top. Is it the mustard? I have seen pictures of the middle salt

When would that be, Nancy D, if I'm not getting too personal about age? I collected for years before I found there were clubs and salt web sites. Hawaii had me a bit isolated I guess. My first convention was 2001, my first chance to meet other collectors face to face.

Supposedly on the Hartford, the ones you have with the lobed top are salts and the straight topped one is a toothpick. The spoon would be the same height as the cream, and the sugar slightly smaller than the cream.

In the Weatherman Fostoria book there is only two pages showing the 501 HARTFORD pattern. I posted one of them in /m56 and this is the other. Neither shows the master salt, the toothpick or any sauce dishes for comparison. In looking again at Kent's flat top master and the sugar without a lid the top plain band on the sugar is wider so I do not think Kent's salt is a sugar minus the lid.Question for any EAPG people...What is the best book that lists all the different pieces in the patterns? I have several but don't know what the best source is. Maybe I should say the most reliable and accurate information.Edited 03-02-2015 11:59 PM

Mary: Maybe one of these months we should just let you post all your Fritz salts. You have an amazing array of them. This one with a square top reminds me of a circus tent. They are all so colorful. I absolutely LOVE the two special Fritz salts I have.

Debi, I should have checked your References for Fostoria Open Salts. Under the Hartford pattern there is a picture of my salt with the flat edge and the same dimensions as mine. Also, under the Coddington section, the entry for 25-2-3 has been changed from "Pattern Glass HARTFORD pattern, square bowl and foot" as it is in my printed copy, to "Pattern Glass HARTFORD pattern toothpick, master salt is wider". Also, on February 1, 2015, Ed Bowman sold a toothpick on EBAY that matches the dimensions of the Coddington 25-2-3. He doesn't mention anything about it being a salt. Is Ed Bowman the expert we are looking for?
88
Kent Hudson03-03-201501:20 AM ET (US)IP: 72.84.246.11
There is also a Hartford creamer and uncovered sugar currently listed on EBAY. According to the listing: "The creamer is 4 5/8" to the top of the handle and about 3 5/8" square in the middle of the piece. The sugar dish is 4 " inches in height and about 3 1/2" square in the middle of the piece." These measurements are more consistent with what I would expect of a creamer and sugar from this period and over an inch larger each way than my salt. Apparently, there was a top to the salt, or it may have been a mustard which usually had a top. Not made very long, so probably not very many made.
89
Debi Raitz03-03-201503:40 AM ET (US)IP: 69.14.123.141
Kent: Some of that information came from either Ed Berg or Rod Elser when I put that page together years ago. There isn't any backup proof for some of it. I just went with what they told me on some of it so some might be wrong. I don't know that I ever had any proof of a HARTFORD master salt or what it looked like. Obviously there are a couple pieces in the HARTFORD line that could pass for a master salt and one of them probably is, but which one? I have tried to update some information over the years, like adding some more colors and the reproductions. I don't think anyone has ever been able to supply any of the missing images.I asked earlier about any EAPG books that had reliable pattern pieces information. I got out the two biggest ones I have and HARTFORD isn't in either one. Either are some other Fostoria patterns so I guess they aren't very reliable at all or maybe they only list patterns that have full lines of dinnerware, not just tableware. I read somewhere that tableware consists of serving pieces, condiments, etc. and dinnerware includes plates, cups, saucers, etc. It sure would be nice if there was a comprehensive book on pattern glass pieces. If anyone knows of one let me know.I'm going to look at my toothpick books and see if I can find HARTFORD anywhere.I saw the creamer and sugar on eBay looking for pieces earlier. Either there was an open and a covered version of the sugar, or the one on eBay is the spooner according to the catalog pictures I have.
90
Debi Raitz03-03-2015
The HARTFORD toothpick shown in "Glass Toothpick Holders" by Bredehoft and Sanford gives the size as 2-5/8" high by 2-1/4" wide. It has a rather wide plain top band with a scalloped rim.

PJ, thanks for posting your pictures. I don't think this is a case of either or but rather both could be master salts. For example look at the first Hartford catalog page message #56. Which one is THE Hartford covered sugar? The one on the right side of the page or the one on the middle bottom?

It looks like the sugar without the pedestal base is #501-1/2, not #501. Not sure if that indicates it's supposed to be a different pattern number or not. Seems like just an alternative piece to the pattern. It is odd it would have two different sugars and one does not match the creamer. Maybe there are other pieces without the pedestal base too. There obviously must have been more pages to that catalog and Weatherman found it, but where is it now?

Not perfectly squared, but you can see the attempt. This piece is marked with a fake LCT, it has iridescent surface similar to Tiffany's Favrille, but it is not up to their standards. Looks similar to OSC931-1, probably made by Iorio of Remington, New Jersey.

I'm not clear as to what's going on re HARTFORD. The ind salt has a scalloped rim and is 1-3/4SQ x 1-1/4H, the master has a smooth rim and is 2-1/2SQ x 2-1/4H. There are few books that show all the forms made but Weatherman's Fostoria does a pretty good job.

This may be a Salt-Want-To-Be. I found it on eBay and decided it would fit into my collection A-OK. It is made by Westmoreland Glass Co. (Has the "WG" mark on the bottom.), and is a good master salt size...2 5/8 inches square at the outside panels, 2 inches square at the rim and 2 1/8 inches high. I liked the true red color and I think I have seen the piece with a lid in some other life. Maybe a covered sugar or a trinket dish. If anyone knows exactly what it is and has a manufacture date, please post the info.

Judy, your lovely red square piece was made as a covered trinket box, often as a souvenir piece. I've seen it in antique malls with various inscriptions on the lid. Date would be about 1900-1920.Edited 03-05-2015 06:15 PM

Mary, Mary, Mary(not Marsha!)I'm still amazed to see all the "goodies" you post! I still don't know how you part with the ones, that you do. Haven't got to the "letting go" stage yet, I just keep "cramming" them in the 16 cabinets(artfully crammed!)

16 cabinets, Hey Mary, we are stealing from the wrong guy. Gatta go to Don's house and steal a couple of his cabinets. Better yet, we hit Dons and then go to Kents. I have this big plan. Jan and I were talking. I told her I want to go to Australia and steal all of Janelle's art glass salts. She wants to hit Jyttes house, for everything. Lolololololol. My plan....we are going to be Snooper and Blooper. Together we will go to Mary's and take her salts. So Mary, if you hear giggling and snorting in the middle of the night ....don't worry, it is just us....fondling your salts. Oh, I'm the snorter.Edited 03-07-2015 12:31 PM

I know all of us have duplicates of salts and other pieces we would like to find a new home. I use the Salvation Army and/or Goodwill for that. Over the years I've taken several donations of salts and assorted tableware to them. I figure the salts find a new home and the organizations make a little money. They will provide a receipt for tax deductions if you need one.
229
Debi Raitz03-09-201511:42 AM ET (US)IP: 69.14.123.141
Sue: Is it Walter (something)? Because he was the one at Heisey who told me they were not Heisey. Seems to me when they were compared to a known Heisey clear one, the beveling on the corners was different. He also told me my blue FANDANGO pattern salt was not Heisey but unless someone had an identical mold I still think it was made at Heisey. Maybe it was just experimental or some whimsy but it is exactly the same mold except it was not fire polished. We know it's not a repro or else there would be more out there and no one I know of ever said they had one too.

I just checked the "Chat" today, so I'm a little behind. I compared my Green "Heisey" with my crystal one, and I can see NO NOTICABLE difference! Sometimes I think that if Walter(or any curator) don't know for SURE, they just say it ISN'T! A lot of Heisey and Greentown "UNSEEN" items still turn up, every year. They show this Salt in Vaseline, in the O.T.C. Who knows what workers "came up with" when the Boss wasn't looking!!

be right about what they made "after hours." I know in the height of the Heisey glass popularity many pieces were carried out of the factory at the end of the day. I presume some were seconds, but maybe not all. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about your salt.

PJ, Lacies are not really my thing but even I could change for those ones. Jytte, where in the world are you finding these salts. I search and search for the unusual and usually come up zilch. If they are in your flea markets etc they sure leave the ones here for dead. Of course it
would help if I was in a city and had a bit of variety.
286
Janelle Jefferson03-11-201508:35 PM ET (US)IP: 124.168.137.187

Thanks, Janelle! It is a lovely salt, marked on the bottom with the Davidson "rampant lion." It is shown on the catalog reprints in the back of H & J.

Janelle - Some Antique-stores and some glass-friends contact me if they have some (they know I'll pay the price:-)). And I've also been contacted by/during my Home-page. Surprised myself - noticed a number of 104 different when I yesterday added my new green.Jan - are your beauties made in colour? Salts: Portieux, France

I'm wondering if the malachite and lapis might be Schlevogt (Hoffmann's son-in-law). They usually had paper labels so I guess there's no way to tell.
297
Jytte03-12-201505:50 PM ET (US)IP: 90.184.148.85

FIRST... WELCOME Nancy !!! SECOND... and most important... There are NO bad (hate this word - dumb) questions on this board !!! The only bad question is the question you fail to ask !!! We all have "gaps" in our memory !!! We all have times that we are just TOO TIRED to get out the reference books to look something up ourselves... so we put the question out to our friendly members here on the board !!!THIRD... eventually you will get to know the members and learn their "short hand" and how they post... you will get to know what is a master salt and what is a "lacy" salt (an early special salt) - you'll learn what is a art salt, what is a mold blown salt... and so on... be patient with yourself !!! The ladies and gentlemen here are VERY patient !!! Heaven knows they've put up with me for a very long time !!! FOURTH... I'm sure it's been suggested to you to look into reference books... It sounds like you've been in touch with Mary... A GREAT, GREAT mentor !!! So... you are off to a perfect start !!!Hang in there and keep reading... check the references on this board ... ASK QUESTIONS !!!Keep smiling !!!"The Salty Nut..." PJ

Hey There Nancy Carol - See you found part of the drooling experience -- In answer to your question about the Lacy salts - Yes they are called that because of the intricate design in most pieces - Though not all of them are elaborate - but more definitely called Lacy because of the time frame they were produced - About 1825 to 1850 which was considered the Lacy Period -- The4 only way we can slide them in on this month's topic is to post the picture of a double because to my knowledge there is not a square lacy to be found -- This one is from the Acorn book DI 20 and as you can see it is not quite as ornate as the pones posted by Jytte - but still a Lacy salt -

P.J. my dear, around these parts we sometimes say a woman is butt-sprung after pregnancy....New Nancy--the history of glass making is very interesting. A Lacy anything is hand pressed, which was often an inexact work. The molds were made with tons of fancy design to hide the imperfections, so the glass had a lacy look to it. They are early, they are wonky, and many of us adore them!

Well shucks P.J. - I was looking at your description and thought - Holy Cow - I now know what is wrong with me - I have been pregnant (with twins) for about 2 years now --- Lynda - All intaglios are beautiful - even the busted up ones - Meet a man some years ago that I would send my really rim broken ones to - He used them as fancy windows in his hand-made miniature houses -- My feeling is that if something started out beautifully made - it will always wind up beautifully preserved - even if it is in a box in my garage - lol lol --
392
Debi Raitz03-24-201506:49 PM ET (US)IP: 69.14.123.141
Mary: That sounds like a beautifully creative way to use beat up intaglios. Nine times out of ten the only problem with them is rim chips. Wish there was some way to see his creations. I've always been fond of miniature houses but never actually built or owned one.

I'll see if I still have his e-mail - I lost touch when I had the neck surgery - so it has been a while - but hopefully I have it and it will work - I know he said he would send me pictures one time - Years ago I bought a box of craft items and the young man told me his grandmother had made the houses - I did not pay any attention until I got the boxes home and started to see what I had - This is one of the

OK, this should be it. The green is not a salt. My Mom gave it to me. She brought it over from France when she married my Dad. I treat it like my beloved salts.

I recall a comment made buy Ed Berg about square salts somehow limiting their collecting. After seeing Jan and Lynda's posts that seems impossible. If you guys need to ship a few out to gain space...I can find a shelf or two for them. Just fantastic ladies!
