Serving the Churches of St Basil the Great, The Most Holy Trinity & St Therese of Lisieux Sunday 28 th October & 4 th November (30 th & 31 st Sunday of the Year) Twinned with the Parish of Embalenhle in South Africa A week to cherish … “Be like living stones, building a spiritual house.” These words are from St Peter, in his First Letter, and they resonate beautifully with our parish this week. We have been through testing times, including the great upheaval of the building works, and now we can rest with the fact that we have three churches of fine quality, places of peace and renewal for anyone who visits. We now enter eight days in parish life which are full of joy, inspiration and hope. The focus is firstly on Holy Trinity, as the Bishop celebrates the Solemn Mass of Dedication, including the Dedication of the new altar, on Tuesday 30 th at 7.30pm. There is a new crucifix in place this was hand crafted in Bethlehem, and the glass circles at the edges of the wood contain soil, olive leaves, and roses of Sharon, all from the Holy Land. The Solemn Mass of Dedication is a definitive moment in the life of any church please come in great numbers on Tuesday. It will truly be an occasion where you will want to say, “I was there.” Then next Wednesday the focus shifts to Our Confirmation candidates, as Bishop Thomas celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation with 31 of our young people. Particularly special this year is that three of them have only just been Baptised. This is an amazing journey when we think of ourselves aged 16 or 17, would we have had the courage to step out in faith and be Baptised? Please pray for all our young people, who bring such energy, challenge, hope and joy to parish life. Please come and celebrate their Confirmation with them on Wednesday 7 th November at 7.30pm at St Basil’s. In between are the powerful feast days of All Saints and All Souls. There is great providence that these feasts fall in such a week; we praise the example and witness of the Saints, patrons of this parish, and we give thanks for the people who have gone before us, whose memories we treasure, and who have been part of our family life and the life of this parish. This is a week in which to relax, to remember, to give thanks and to celebrate. We do this as a parish family, and we pray that we may be witnesses within Basildon “living stones, building a spiritual house,” inspired and uplifted by the great celebrations of these eight days. Serving the Churches of St Basil the Great, The Most Holy Trinity & St Therese of Lisieux

Sunday 28th October & 4th November (30th & 31st Sunday of the Year)

Twinned with the Parish of Embalenhle in South Africa

A week to cherish …

“Be like living stones, building a spiritual house.” These words are from St Peter, in his First Letter, and they resonate beautifully with our parish this week. We have been through testing times, including the great upheaval of the building works, and now we can rest with the fact that we have three churches of fine quality, places of peace and renewal for anyone who visits. We now enter eight days in parish life which are full of joy, inspiration and hope.

The focus is firstly on Holy Trinity, as the Bishop celebrates the Solemn Mass of Dedication, including the Dedication of the new altar, on Tuesday 30th at 7.30pm. There is a new crucifix in place – this was hand crafted in Bethlehem, and the glass circles at the edges of the wood contain soil, olive leaves, and roses of Sharon, all from the Holy Land. The Solemn Mass of Dedication is a definitive moment in the life of any church – please come in great numbers on Tuesday. It will truly be an occasion where you will want to say, “I was there.”

Then next Wednesday the focus shifts to Our Confirmation candidates, as Bishop Thomas celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation with 31 of our young people. Particularly special this year is that three of them have only just been Baptised. This is an amazing journey – when we think of ourselves aged 16 or 17, would we have had the courage to step out in faith and be Baptised? Please pray for all our young people, who bring such energy, challenge, hope and joy to parish life. Please come and celebrate their Confirmation with them on Wednesday 7th November at 7.30pm at St Basil’s.

We do this as a parish family, and we pray that we may be witnesses within Basildon – “living stones, building a spiritual house,” inspired and uplifted by the great celebrations of these eight days.

Readers and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. A reminder of our gatherings in November; there is a letter for you at the back of the church you usually attend. Readers meet on Tuesday 20th November, from 2.00 – 3.00pm, or 7.30 – 8.30pm at Holy Trinity; Eucharistic Ministers meet Wednesday 21st November, from 2.00 – 3.00pm, or 7.30 – 8.30pm. The meetings are a chance to reflect on the ministries that we are carrying out, to make sure we are all doing the same thing, and to give an opportunity for any questions, concerns and feedback. In Spring 2013 we will have a day of reflection together. If you cannot make the November meetings, please let Sr Clare know.

…………………………………………….

Sacred Space – in need of some peace? Moments of quiet in a busy week? Time to think and time to pray? Our churches offer plenty of space, beautiful lighting, and a calm atmosphere. The November sessions of Sacred Space cannot take place due to the Confirmation Mass and the meeting for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. The next session takes place at St Basil’s on Wednesday 5th December from 7.30 – 8.30pm, with the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar and quiet classical music playing. Pop in for a few minutes or stay for an hour; in the stillness give space for God’s heart to speak to your heart.

…………………………………………….

Bishop Thomas has served the Diocese as Bishop for 32 years. He will retire when a new Bishop is announced, and in anticipation of this there is a Diocesan wide collection for Bishop Thomas. In our parish the collection will take place next weekend, 3rd/4th November. The Bishop is visiting both this week and next week, and has taken a keen interest in our building projects. This is a chance to thank him for his long service within the Diocese.

…………………………………………….

Hall bookings – many thanks to Eileen. For the last four years, Eileen Prizeman has looked after the hall bookings, and she has done sterling work in keeping everything on track, especially during the complex time of the building works. Now that the office is located at Holy Trinity, next to the hall, it is easier to manage the bookings from there, and so all future enquiries should come to Debbie on 01268 281732. As a parish, we owe a great debt of gratitude to Eileen and those who have helped her; to look after the hall takes many unseen hours, and can involve phone calls at many hours of the day and night. To Eileen, THANK YOU.

Two wonderful events in late Autumn

A Question of Faith, 28th

November, 7.30 – 9.00, Holy Trinity. This is a Deanery event, put on by the Diocese, and it involves two expert panelists – Michelle Moran, who co-founded the Sion Community in Brentwood, is an internationally recognized faith speaker, and is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. The PCL are appointed by Pope Benedict and offer advice within the Vatican. Fr Paul Keane is a Cambridge graduate, has a Licence in Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, and is currently Chaplain to the University of Essex. He is the author of books about the English Martyrs. They will be joined by Fr Dominic, and together this panel will answer your questions about faith. This is an event not to be missed, and should be both educational and very enjoyable! Barry and Margaret Mizen, 4

th December, 7.00pm, Holy Trinity Barry

and Margaret Mizen lost their son Jimmy when he was just 16. He was killed for no reason and it would have been easy for them to become very bitter. Instead, with the support of their faith, they have devoted the years since 2008 to working for peace, in a spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness. For more about Jimmy, and their work, look at www.jimmymizen.org

They will be visiting De la Salle school during the day, to share their story with those in year 10 and 11 – the age Jimmy was when he died. In the evening, come along to hear their story first hand, and to see what all of us can do to bring peace, forgiveness and hope in even the most difficult situations. This is a Deanery event, for the Year of Faith. This is the sort of evening that can change lives. For both of these events, no children under 12 years old, please!

New Publication. Aenne Werner-Leggett, Being Mary? : Irish Catholic Immigrant Women and Home and Community Building in Harold Hill, Essex, 1947-1970 (Eleven International Publishing, The Hague, 2012 ISBN 978-94-90947-76-7, pp. xi + 283). This is an historical-sociological study of the role of Irish Women on the London overspill estate at Harold Hill, Romford, Essex, in the post-war period. It draws upon material in the Brentwood Diocesan Archives, the Archives of St Edward’s Catholic Church, Romford, and the Archives of the Brentwood Ursuline Sisters, as well as personal interviews. It chronicles the foundation out of St Edward, Romford, of the two Catholic parishes in Harold Hill, viz. Most Holy Redeemer by Father Brian Foley (later Bishop of Lancaster) in 1952 and St Dominic by Father (later Monsignor Canon) Michael McKenna in 1954. It also charts the development of St Ursula’s Catholic Primary School which was established by the Brentwood Ursulines.
