Mr. Geoffrey van LeeuwenConsul General

Foreword

It is my pleasure to announce that we are organising the Holland Meets Pune-Smart City

Connect in cooperation with the Pune Municipal Corporation and CII. I also take this

opportunity to congratulate Pune ranking 2nd amongst the first 20 cities selected to be

developed under the “Smart Cities Mission”.

I am happy to introduce you to some of our Dutch companies representing Dutch domain

expertise and know-how in waste, smart mobility, water, healthcare, sustainable housing

solutions, etc. that come under the smart cities framework.

The Netherlands works with partners at all levels to improve market access. Reiterating this

message, the ‘Holland Meets Pune’ event only proves that the Dutch want to do business

beyond New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other metro cities. Though we focussed on Pune

since the last few years, this year we are taking big steps forward to increase the Dutch business

footprint. The city of Pune has been witnessing an array of activities organized by the Dutch

Consulate in April and May 2016 ranging from art, culture, film festival, food, sports and music

to business events such as Invest in Holland panel discussion, Smart City Connect and the

Holland India Innovation Talks.

One of the prime reasons to organize this event of such prominence is to incite interest among

Dutch companies to explore business opportunities in promising cities such as Pune as well as

convey a key message to the city of Pune that the Dutch have the expertise and sustainable

techniques to make Pune a future smart city. Pune is also home to renowned Dutch companies

- Philips, DSM, TomTom, Decos Technology Group, Akzo Nobel Chemicals, etc., so Pune is not

new to us!

As much as we are appreciative with the support of the Pune Municipal Corporation, we are

also enthused to associate with private players-real estate developers, urban planners, waste

management companies, among others in our initiative. The Holland Meets Pune-Smart City

Connect provides an excellent opportunity to witness what our Dutch companies can offer in

terms of cutting-edge technology to achieve the Smart City tag for Pune. In addition, this event

creates a platform to connect government as well as businesses to examine the potential for

mutually advantageous future co-operation and explore new business opportunities between

Holland and Pune.

Although this is the last leg of our Holland Meets Pune event it definitely does not end here.

Let’s together advance good business relations between the Netherlands and Pune and

strengthen the basis for economic growth!

We live in an age of unprecedented technological development. Throughout the world, ‘digitization’ is penetrating society in many ways. Technological innovations are likely to have major implications, not only for the human environment but for the very structure of society. At the same time, we feel the effects of urbanization, climate change and resource scarcity ever more severely.

The Smart Cities concept brings together two trends which we cannot ignore: digitization and urbanization. To safeguard the quality and liveability of our human environment, we must find smart solutions to challenges in areas such as logistics, water management, waste management, food supplies and air quality. All these challenges converge in the urban setting. New solutions must be found within the existing structures. That means using the available space in the most efficient way possible through the ‘smart’ application of modern technology.

In the Netherlands, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and its stakeholders safeguard the quality, safety, accessibility and ‘liveability’ of our towns and cities. Together they ensure that there are adequate roads, public transport, green space and open water. It maintains a safe and healthy physical setting which is attractive to residents and visitors, and which has the infrastructure needed to allow companies to compete at international levels. The spatial structure of our county is an inspiring example of how limited space can be used to support all functions: housing, business and recreation.

Various practical experiments with smart city solutions have been implemented. In Amsterdam, for example, the city authority has joined forces with Amsterdam ArenA to create one of the most innovative sports stadiums in the world. It will incorporate smart ICT solutions for crowd management and innovative energy grids. There will be improved connectivity and resources for visitors

Working together on integrated solutions

to the stadium and the surrounding area based on the use of tablets and smartphones.

Smart solutions and technologies can help to reach the policy goals and ambitions, but also imply other ways of planning and governance. Therefore, the Ministry itself is closely involved in the development of new ‘smart’ solutions. If we are to ensure that all the possibilities of Smart City solutions are exploited to the full, co-operation is essential. Government, knowledge institutes and the private sector must work together, sharing knowledge and experience. Although cities have the lead in developing smart solutions, central government plays a key role by establishing the necessary pre-conditions and removing any obstacles. In addition, central government brings together the various projects and actors to achieve maximum synergy.

In the Netherlands, we exchange knowledge and experience between cities to learn from each other in developing Smart City solutions, but we also wish to learn from the experiences and best practices in other countries. There are many opportunities for international cooperation and knowledge-sharing which will help to find smart solutions to the challenges we face in Dutch cities, such as how to transform an existing urban structure into a Smart City. That process must devote attention not only to technology but to matters of governance and the involvement of civil society.
