In 1926 c&mp was held July lOth to July 24th incluuive. J.t this encampment the Coast Artillery held target prcctice, ftring at a ~~ving target out at sea. Out of a 1~ssible one hundred and eighty hits the regiment scored thirty eight which was considered unusually good for citiun aoldiera.
Ten years later, in August 1936, the 250th was changed from tractor to a truck drawn regiment. Theae trucks or prilr.e mov-ers as they are called are powe1•ed by sb.-cylinder f..bS engineJJ. All six vmeols -~ pouered by the engine e.nc. are con-trolled by air brakes • . Thi5 huge truck can move one of the J.5 ton 155 U. In 1937 ttle regit"ent joint1d with the other units of the 40th Division at San Luis Opispo in one of the largest encempiilf\nts held in California, for mamy years.
Before leaving the subject of enc84pa~ . afew ~ords about the one held in 1938 should be mentioned. A new •Camp t.icQu&icie11 Wb.S provided for t he 250th at a lo-cation approximately ten miles south of the old camp near Capitola. ! longer coast line was avnilable for target practice at the ne~· camp and with the ne equipment mentioned previously, the troops left for °Camp ~cQuaide• July 9, 1938, for a two weeks encampmfnt• The plans provided for tr..rce columns. The gun column under coamand o£ First Li~uten.rmt 'f.'cY C. Jacobs left first, .followed by t he !rain Detachment under Captain C. fi. Saul, uuC. last the truck column le~ by First Lieu-tenant Alfred Virag. The three columna reached CCilllp wiU1out mishap and by 5z.30 P. Ill., camp was e~tablished and each gun was placed. The activities during t..he ance.mpment were about as usual, consisting of' P'J.b-callber practice and ending with regular ser'fice firing. On Wednesday, July 20th, GoTennor .Frank Uerrinm, Command-er-in-Chief of the .National Guard of Call!'ornia., visited the camp. Due to a pre-Tailing fog the Governor ~as unable to aee the reglment in regular t~rcet prac-tice,. Separate Battalion of Infantry, California Ne;.tionti.l Guard. The Firat Provision-al Battel.ion, Coast J.rtillery was organised february 1, 1921, and on March 25, 19211 the Battalion waa redesignated .First Coast Defense CollliiiAnd. Major .siittel-staedt was pl~ced in command. Three monthe later on July 1, 1921, another pro-visional battalio.o of coast artillery located in the Southern part of the State

On November 91 1921, he was prQmoted to Colonel, which rank he held until 19.38, when he was promoted to Brigadier General and pl6ced in command of the 79th Brigade. In December 192.3, Colonel Mittelstaedt wes appointed t.he Adjutant .General of tb.e National Guard of California. for seven years he ·ne~d that position, but never relinquished his co~ of the 250th Coast Artillery. Hie promotion to Brigadier Genere.l resulted in Lieuten-ant Colonel David P. Hardy aesuming CO.IIDI&nd of the regimetlt. On October 221 19.33, he was commissioned Colonel_. Colonel Hardy's military record shows that he enlisted in Compaey D, Fifth Iztfllntry Regiment, April 20, 1914. One year later, June ..3, 1915, ne was elected Second Lieutenant. He serTed with Compeny-D1 o~ the Kexic4n norder in 1916, and on November 16, 1~16, soon after his re-turn froa the :Corder was ele•1ated to the rank of iir'!t !.ieutenant. tie was oro-.oted to Captain, C~ e.;.st .lrtillery Corps, on Decesber .30, 1916 and assigned to ·

After entering .Federal Service Captain Hardy was sttJ.tioned at Benicia Arsenli.l for a enort time before being sent to t he Coast Artillery School at Fort ilAonroe, Virginia. Ria ability e.s an insj;ru.etor in J.r.athematlcs resulted in his being retained as senior instructor for the duration of the war. At the close of t..':le war Captain Hardy tras transferred to tna Offic-ers Reser-ve Corps with the rWlk of Major. On July 16, 1920, Me.jor !i~rdy was re-commiesioned Captain in the California National uuard 3llu assigned tv com:nand the newly ()rganized First Company, Coast ,; Artiller.Y. To Lieutenant Colonel Hardy belongs most of the credit for the splendid s: &ll arms r€cord of the 250th Regiment. From a 11iie,ort on Rifle Practice" of Coz:pany D, Fifth Infantry Regiment, hald on the Sta.ta Rifle Range, Manzanita, California, in the fall of 1914, we find that Private David P. Hardy made a score of 203
nd was rated ti.8 a Sharpshooter. The Captain of Company D, at that time was .ugene f..i. Knight, whose signature was attached to the report on NovE.mber 10,

tlil'get practice or conteets, t he name of David P. Hardy W9S usually included. Space will not per.rlt tho listing of the ma...-1y pistol e.nd rifle Cltitclles won by the 25oth Regiment. In 19.38 Colonel Hardy "as Captain of the -eictorious Cali-fornia National Guard rifle team that went East to Cam11 Perry a.."l.d won the Na-tional rifle match1 competing with all br~tches of the United States lr~y, Marine and National Guard te
