Way back in 1990 I asked my father what Masonry was all about, because all that I could see at that
time was him going out on the first Wednesday of every month, between October and May and
coming back in what I would call a very glazed and happy mood (and this was very rarely on the same
day as he went out). One other thing that also puzzled me was why he kept reading out of a little blue
book to the dog! He told me that he could tell me but that then would have to kill me! I thought
that if father was a Mason then it couldn’t be bad, so over one of our traditional Sunday lunchtime
pints I told him that I would like to join Eastfields Lodge.
From the very first night of my initiation, the spirit of Eastfields was clear to me. Eastfields, at that time
was the youngest lodge in Rugby and since those early days has gone from strength to strength. The
lodge has prided itself on friendship and support.
We have always taken the rituals seriously, but at the same time we have always enjoyed our work
upstairs. Eastfields also enjoys its festive boards and why not as this seems to represent two thirds of our
night. The festive board and our legendary late-night bar service have added to the camaraderie of the
lodge. I believe that it is the most important reason why Eastfields is where it is today and for these
reasons Eastfields has a very special place in our founders, initiates and joining members hearts.
The next 25 years are looking good for Eastfields. We need to keep doing much of the same, making
our new members feel at ease with Masonry and looking after all of our visitors in the way that only
Eastfields can. By achieving this we will strengthen the lodge and stimulate new young members
coming into Masonry – after all, how many lodges can boast that the current Master and IPM are in
their thirties.
On a final note, I would like to thank the founders of Eastfields for having the vision to start something
of which I am sure they are all very proud.
I hope to see you all on Friday 11th October 2030 for our Golden Jubilee!
Shawn J. Baker

In each decade, following World Wars I & II,as society endeavoured to recoup peacefulvalues, Masonry flourished, in common withother moral charitable organisations. Thisresulted in many provincial lodges havingmemberships in excess of 100.
Whilst beneficial to lodges financially, it didprecipitate a lack of commitment, because newinitiates could expect to wait 20 years or morebefore becoming a steward. In all probability abrother would not become a Master before theage of 70 years.
To alleviate this problem, Grand Lodgesuggested that Provincial Grand Masters shouldencourage the larger lodges within theirprovince, to sponsor new lodges.
In the Province of Warwickshire, between1918 and 1928, 42 new lodges wereconsecrated, and from 1945 to 1955, 32 newlodges.
Quite often new lodges would impose alower age limit, of say 40 years, for foundermembers, to help keep younger brethren in
their lodges. Overall, the policy worked quitewell, and some lodges sponsored two or eventhree lodges.
Darell Lodge was founded in 1944, andDunsmore Lodge in 1947, however, severalRugby lodges still had a large membership.
Over the next 30 years several discussionstook place but nothing happened. Renewedinterest was shown whilst Brother John Whitewas Worshipful Master of Dunsmore Lodge. Two senior Past Masters, namely W. Bro.Bernard Liddington and W. Bro. Tom White, encouraged him.
The latter was W. Bro. John’s father and hebecame Assistant Provincial Grand Master in1977. A small exploratory Committee wasformed consisting of Worshipful Brothers JohnWhite and Edgar May and Brothers BrianPackham and Norman Bean.
W. Bro. John and Bro. Norman weremembers of Dunsmore Lodge, but W.Bro.Edgarand Brother Brian belonged to lodges outside ofRugby.
These Brethren reported they did feel therewas sufficient support for a new lodge, and thosebrethren thought to be interested were invitedto a meeting late in 1979.
Subsequently 27 brethren showed sufficientinterest to pay a commitment fee and they wereinvited to a meeting at the Rugby Masonic Hallon Friday 15th February 1980.
Copies of the minutes taken at that meetingare an addendum to this history. The committeethen elected set to work in earnest.
The first difficulty that they encountered wasthe proposed name of the Lodge. V. W. Bro.David Mitchell, who was appointed DeputyProvincial Grand Master in 1965, had been thedriving force in obtaining and converting thepresent Rugby Masonic Hall.
Eventually a Grand Masters’ letter datingback to the 1920’s was produced, which ruledthat a Lodge could only be named after abrother who had achieved the rank ofProvincial Grand Master.
Next, all the dates originally suggested forConsecration by Provincial Grand Lodge, proved to be impracticable and theConsecration eventually was set for Saturday11th October 1980 in Rugby.
Although 8 months elapsed between theinitial meeting of brethren and theConsecration, it was a very hectic time for thoseinvolved. Only through the tremendousgoodwill of the Officers and the Staff at theProvincial Grand Lodge, and no doubt at GrandLodge also were we finally prepared for theOctober date.
W. Bro. Russell Cross, the Provincial GrandDirector of Ceremonies, made several visits toRugby to prepare the founder members for theConsecration Ceremony.
R. W. Bro. Thomas Wood, the ProvincialGrand Master, led a full team of his Officers inwhat was a most moving and dignifiedCeremony. A third row of chairs had to bebrought into the Temple, and even then thefounder members were limited to two personalguests each.
Even before Consecration, considerablediscussion took place concerning the form ourCeremonies should take, as we had agreed to tryand be as different as possible to the otherRugby lodges, within the limits of emulationworkings.
We are indebted to Bro. Ray Davidson forgiving us unlimited access to rooms at CliftonCourt for our early rehearsals.
W. Bro. Edgar May proved to be a verypatient and inspirational Director ofCeremonies, encouraging us to try mostworkings in several different ways.
Likewise W. Bro.Tony Gray played differenttunes for the opening and closing odes, andprocessions.
Thus the brethren of Eastfields Lodge bycommon agreement developed its own style.

The Founders
To the members of this lodge the nameEastfields is almost synonymous with the name ofDavid Mitchell. The late W. Bro. David Mitchell, the Master Builder, was well known and deeplyrespected in the town of Rugby. As the MasonicBuilder he is most affectionately remembered inthe Masonic Province of Warwickshire, and nowmore especially in the Eastfields Lodge. He wasinstrumental in obtaining Eastfields for the Masonsof Rugby and for its conversion into Freemasons’Hall. No more worthy person therefore, could bethe subject for the symbolism of Eastfields LodgeBanner.
Prominent in the Banner, in the first andsecond quarters, are the two lesser lights, the Sunand the Moon. They are placed there for a purpose.“It is customary at the erection of all stately andsuperb edifices to lay the first or foundation stone
at the N.E. corner of the building”.The Sun andthe Moon, therefore fix the N.E. corner in our partof the world, where, beautifully illuminated in goldis the subject of the symbolism of this Banner, theFirst or Foundation Stone of the Lodge, representing David Mitchell.
Suitably displayed are certain working tools, characteristically depicting morality, equality, andjustice. Also added is the trowel, indicative of theMaster and the Masonic Builder, but more toemblematically cement the friendships DavidMitchell laid during his Masonic career.
In the fourth is a sprig of acacia, symbolisingdeath.Taking the four quarters, therefore, the Sunand the Moon denote light and darkness, and theN.E. corner and the Sprig of Acacia, life and death. In the centre of the Banner is the Plumb, connecting earth with heaven, but also pointing tothe N.E. corner. This depicts that undeviating linejoining those Masons passing through the intricatewindings of this mortal life with the G.A.O.T.U.himself, and with those now in his presence.
There is one more symbol of significance.Across the top of the Banner is a scroll, in purewhite, from which emerges in gleaming gold thename of the Lodge, Eastfields Lodge, No. 8959.This emblematically represents W. Bro.Tom Whiteand W. Bro. John White, the originators of theLodge.
This Banner, therefore, symbolises the Masoniclife of one who lived respected and died regretted, beginning with the emblematical representation ofthe entrance of all men on this their mortalexistence; progresses by the principles of moraltruth, contemplates the closing hour of existence;and finally, by implication, points to the GrandLodge above, where the World’s Great Architectlives and reigns supreme.
