How we found our team...

Many of the pupils at HIT Grein are interested in the project and want to join a meeting.

So it wasn't easy to choose those who should represent our school.

Finally four students qualified for the meeting in Sweden.

Globalisation and Sustainability

Especially in Geography some classesworked on sustainability and globalisation.

Page 9: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

Globalisation Exhibition

One main part was the exhibition provided by an Austrian NGO which was at our school

for two weeks.

Page 10: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

Where and how things are produced

The exhibiton contained many interesting factsand tried to show better alternatives.

Globalisation in Austria

Some facts:

Page 12: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

The History of Globalisation

Here are some facts the students of class 4c found out in their history lessons:

● 1751 – 1880: industrial production began, invention of steam● engines, railways and telegraphs

● 1880 – 1914: time zones were installed, clocks and watches● became common, steamships, cars, tramways and● busses became popular

● 1914 – 1945: „Fordism“, radio and film business

● 1945 – 1970: cars became mass products, TV and movies gained more importance, advertising

● 1970 – present days: communication and data processing● technologies, modern electronic media

How much waste ?The two classes of year 3 started a project onwaste and recycling. After a waste collectionat our school their work is still in progressand will be presented at the next meeting.

Sustainable EnergyEnergy was a main topic in the physics lessons

of the year 4 students. In groups they worked on a certain topicand presented and discussed it in class.

How Electricity is produced in Austria

Presentation by Rene and Michael

● Hydroelectric Energy ● (most important one) ● Thermal Power Stations● Solar Energy● Wind Power Stations

Around 70% of the electricity produced inAustria comes from renewable sources.

The History of using flowing Water as a Source of Energy

From a Roman saw mill to a modern power station … there is a long tradition of using water to move wheels, mills and generators.

Biomass as a renewable Source of Energy

What can be used?

● wood and wood products● straw and grass● plant oil● plants containing sugar or starch● organic waste (manure, compost,..)

Presentation by Johanna and Marlene

Page 27: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

How does it work?Using biomass to fuel athermal power station is only one possibilty.

Biomass can be usedin many ways for heating and producing energy.

During the resent years efficient biomass powerstations were built in Austria. Among them Europe'slargest power-plant of that kind in Simmering, near Vienna, which was opened in the year 2006.

Geothermal Energy

Currently there are two geothermal power stationsin Austria, both of them were built in 1998.There are ten other stations used for districtheating only. Many households use heat pumps and thereare lots of thermal baths all over the country.

Energy Consumption in Austria

Page 32: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

Energy Consumption of an average Austrian household

● heating and hot water: 37, 7 %● household appliances: 20, 9%● lights: 8, 6%● computer, TV, and other● electronic appliances: 7,0%● fridge and freezer: 12,3 %● appliances in● stand-by mode: 4,2 %● others: 9,3 %

How to save Energy?

by Marietta and Tanja

Here are some simple ideas which can helpyou to reduce your energy consumption:● Turn down the heating (about 20° C in a room is enough)

● Use energy saving bulbs instead of ordinary light bulb

● Unplug electrical appliances when you are not using them

● Recycle your waste

● Buy and use energy-efficient electrical appliances

● Clever cooking: For example, don't heat too much water

● Walk, go by bike or use public transport whenever possible

Page 34: TGAL@ HIT Grein Think globally – act locally Comenius Project Part 1: The history of sustainability in Austria.

Does it really work?

Some of the kids didn't only make presentationsbut also constructed models of power stationsusing things they had at home or at school.

Some ImpressionsIn the rest of the presentation you can see someimpressions of our project activities and some ideas ofour work in progress.

The song you'll hearis by Hubert von Goisern -a well known Austrianfolk-rock singerwho is also quite popularamong young people.

The song is called „Brenna tuats guat“ - it deals with theproblems of globalisation in a humorous way and wasnumber one in the Austrian charts for many weeks.

Think about this!

The ecological footprint of an average Austrian is far too big!

If every human on earth lived on our consumption level, 3 planets would be needed to match the demand!

We can´t go on like this!
