Staying Home Economics: Sidelines in Taiwan

Translated by Wei-Jen Li

It is our memory in the childhood that our mother, sisters or other children did simple and

repeated handcrafts in the living room with the pop music playing in the radio and the

pharmaceutical commercials on TV. The sidelines in Taiwan used to be one of the important

industries in Taiwan economic developments. However, nowadays in this ever-changing

modern society, the scene of sidelines in every household has been faded out from peoples’

life. In this special exhibition, we are leading visitors to recall the nostalgic old time memories

in the living room.

In Taiwan, the sidelines exist in various

patterns, but the most common characteristic

of Taiwan sidelines is to “work at home”.

Before the prevalence of female employments

in the modern society, “Home” is a significant

place with first priority for females. In order to

take care of their family by all means, females

don’t leave home for work. Therefore, the

home sidelines were appeared specifically for

females working at home. In this special

exhibition, you will see the tools and

techniques of how people struggle for their

lives working with their bare hands and

constructing the prosperous sidelines as the

family’s subsidiary incomes.

Musical Fantasy of Flying around the World Translated by Burton Chiu

I want to fly! Noting together across time and space with musical notes, the moment I

fly in the sky that opens the window of my heart. Beethoven and I together under the

moonlight to compose a tempting whisper; the snow-covered castle, and Princess

Odeleite and Nutcracker with their rhythmic dance; strolling on the stone roads in

Poland to write poetry with notes, expecting to meet with Chopin; in the Mississippi

River with the rhythm of salvation; in Mother's cradle, I heard the call of the land. With

ears pouring notes, I see a beautiful world.
