History of the Institute

Towards the end of the 19th century Argentina underwent unprecedented demographicand economic changes. Its appraisal and measurement were of vital interest to the rulingclasses that were forging ahead with the National Organization process.

Statistical research aimed at increasing nowledge a!out the population growth and theconse"uences of immigration# as well aso!taining information a!out the conditions ofeconomic production. Such nowledge was essential to the diagnosis and design ofgovernment policies. Thus# in 1$%9 the first National &opulation 'ensus was carried outthroughout the entire Argentine territory.

In 19(9# as a conse"uence of developments in the country)s social and productivestructure derived from the new international economic conditions in addition to theeffects of successive waves of *uropean immigration on Argentina)s population patterns#particularly in the aftermath of !oth +orld +ars# there arose new demands for furthernational statistical researches.

Consequently, many government agencies were created,

It draws up the Annual'rogram of tatistics and (ensuses and develops the methods and standards that will ensurethe compara"ility of statistical information originated in different sources.
