TEXTILESused for protective purpose
Introduction
• Textiles which are used for protectivepurposes is called Protective Textiles.
• All textiles are protective to some extentbut there is a basic difference betweennormally used textiles and protectivetextiles.
Protection Properties
Protection properties of textilematerials are those that protect thehuman body from a variety ofhazardous environments and harmfulsubstances
• Protective Textiles is an interesting segment ofthe technical textile industry.
• Many "high-tech" fibers and products, such asKevlar®, Nomex® (DuPont), and Twaron®(Acordis), Spectra® (Allied) HPPE fibers, PBI,Kermel® (Rhone-Poulenc), P84® (Inspec),carbon impregnated fibers, aramid spunlacematerials, fiberglass, even steel, copper, andother metal fibers have applications in theprotective clothing areas.
• Conventional materials such as nylon andpolyester, cotton and wool, are also used andprovide satisfactory protection in certainapplications - depending on the hazard orexposure.
Kevler fiber is used insoft body armor byloosely stackinglayers (16+) offilament aramid fabric, each providingcoverage andprogressiveresistance to bullet orfragment penetration.
To protect those working inprimary metal industries withmolten metal, and similar areasinvolving high heats such aswelding, foundries, ceramicsmanufacture, firefighters etc.
Thermal protection can beachieved by the followingmethods:
• Clothing made from hightemperature resistant fibres.
• Application of Fire retardant finishon clothing or textiles.
