The European Exploration

European Society

The Spaniards technology that was used in this time period was pretty advance. They hadwooded ships that where very advance and could sail for a long period of time. For example,They would sail in these ships for years traveling to India and china for trade. They woulduse weapons like swords and guns. Guns where a new weapon at the time and was very fatalwitch scared the natives and many others. The natives didn't really have any good weaponsbesides spears and bow and arrows. The treatment of native Americans washorrible, they were. The europeans came to the Americas without any idea of what to expectif they met any one new. When they arrived to America they met a group of people called thenative americans. Within first sight of the Natives colombus wanted to treat them with theutmost respect. European Innovation

The native americans had treated the europeons with nothing but respect. They showed thewhites how to hunt, how to live off the land. The whites were ungrateful, even though thenative americans respected and loved them. The native americans had honest business withthe whites. But out of spite, they did not return the native americans kindness. In the end, thewhites were treated well above the level of respect. Indians innovation, or the way they lived, was usualy hunting, gathering, trading, and basket weaving. They hunted buffalo, and deer. This was one of the things they did for food. They also did hunting and gathering, findingthings like vegatables and fruit, and other neccessities to their lives. This was antoher thingthey did for food. Finnaly, they did basket weaving. This was nessecary because they neededstorage space. These were things about the native americans that describe theirinnovation. The Spaniards technology that was used in this time period was pretty advance. They had wooded ships that where very advance and could sail for a long period of time. Forexample, They would sail in these ships for years traveling to India and china for trade. Theywould use weapons like swords and guns. Guns where a new weapon at the time and wasvery fatal witch scared the natives and many others. The natives didn't really have any goodweapons besides spears and bow and arrows. Their weapons where still good for not havingany technology and they could still be harmful. Overall the Spaniards had a great advantageover the natives, witch lead to the end of many tribes. The treatment of native Americans washorrible. They were killed, raped, pillaged, murdered, enslaved, and hated. They didn't doanything wrong and begged for the white peoples mercy. But, to no avail. The whites hadcommitted genocide. They were killed because they were native Americans, and were therefirst ones there, and had their land stripped from them and had never gotten it back. The

whites were merciless. They didn't care what happened in their conquest of tyranny.Thetreatment of native Americans was horrible.

European Government

The European government had a system that ran the country that the natives lived in throughlies, intimidation, and trying to force their religion on the natives in order to recruit andmake them similar to them. The roles of social structure in order from lowest to highest wasthe slaves, peasants and poors, farmers and craftsmen, then the church and knights, lastlywith the monarchs being at the top of the order. The monarchs were able to control the NativeAmericans thanks to their governments power, army, and false sence of authority. One reasonthat explains this is when the Europeans were telling the natives reasons about why it wasalright to trespass on their land, which was because their queen allowed their army to exploreanywhere throughout the world.Secondly the europoeans' government tried to run the nativesland and possessions through intimidation. This method was proposed when the natives wereretaliating against the europeans by trying to ask why are they tresspassing inside their land. This retaliation that the natives were putting on the europeans made them feel threatened andtried to intimidate them by threatening to shoot them, keep them as slaves, or even killthem.Lastly, the europeans' government had a major belief in religion and trying to spread itto others. When the europeans came to the natives land, immediately they began trying topreach to the indians about Christianity. This method of running the country made the nativesfeel very uncomfterable about the fact that they were not able to have the freedom to worshiptheir own God. This matters now because in todays society behaviour like this shown by theeuropeans would not be tolerated, because of what America's views are on freedom andequality and how we believe that actions like this should not be repeated in any way ever

again. In conclusion, the europeans' government used many techniques as far as the natives togo their way and live on their terms.

The Native American Settlers

Page 5: Textbook Collier, Cantrell, Cudworth

The Indians had a simplistic life style that had a impact on their society due to their religion,

The government system of the Native Americans where some what similar to what wehave today. They would pick most respected men as leaders within their society. Then theywould separate into tribes and have the selected men go be their leaders. Due to this thoughthere was fighting and was among many of clans for more land. This government was calledthe Iroquois league. Most of the violence came to a stop after they leaders of the clans had ameeting. This system lay out the foundation of the first colonial government, made byBenjamen Franklin. Most Indian tribes had the Iroquois league type of government but thensome had different type of government, it mainly depended on the size of the tribe.

Native Americans believed that their gods were what we may call "backup". They believedthat the strength of their gods was what got them their victory.

" Their weapons are stronger, their strategies are stronger, and their gods arestronger."

Lies my teacher told meJames Lowin

Page 6: Textbook Collier, Cantrell, Cudworth

They believed every victory anyone won was because of their gods. The Native Americanshad been very apprehensive of the Europeans, and when it came battle, they believed that theEuropean had stronger gods, stronger weapons, and better strategies. They believed thattheir gods had abandoned them and accepted defeat. They had thought that the gods that theyhad were not strong enough, not brave enough, and cowardice against the white gods. This isone of the reasons that the Native Americans gave up in the assault of the whites.

In defeat, the strong survived, and the weak died. Mothers would leave their babies wherethey were to flee the whites. The babies would die, no one returning for them, and in thehatred and the spite of the Europeans, they would not help the wounded, young NativeAmericans. Is this out of keeping supplies for they would survive, or was this because theyhated the Indians? All the native americans knew were that they were being hunted and theirrace would be enslaved.

Life before any of this was simple. They hunted, gathered, but never really seemed tointeract with other tribes/groups as much as other races did, and lived off the land. This is so,because there is no evidence that they traded with other groups ( maybe besides the whites)and they showed the whites how to grow vegetables like corn, and how to hunt, and evenmade their huts out of the skins of the animals they killed. They cherished everything theykilled and ate, particularly the buffalo. This is so, because the buffalo was the skin of thehuts, the food they ate, and one of the spirits they beleived in.

The African Lifestyle

African innovation, the way they lived, was social hierarchy, Ambassadors, hunting/gathering, and than slaves. The Africans had a social hierarchy, which meant social class, and affected the way people looked at you and treated you. For example, the slaves workedfor the upper class man, the hunter/gatherers and the ambassadors. The hunters/gathererswould hunt, weave baskets, gather fruits vegetables, make necessities for life and hunt game, and trade with the other tribes/groups. The ambassadors were the representatives of the entiregroups/tribes, and were responsible for everything, and took on a religious role as well, possibly being chose by their god? Not much else known about how it works in the Africaninnovation/lifestyle.

Africans were converted to Islamic from trading to the different cultures. This took a hugetole on what they did and how they lived, and Islamic changed their culture, but notindefinitely. This is so, because they didn't totally change their way of life, because theynever really had a place of worship, and still hunted, gathered, etc. From there, the Islamicfaith was spread forward. The Africans followed the writings of the Qumran, the words ofAllah. They would trade from tribe to tribe, spreading the faith, or religious beliefs. If itweren't for trade, it never would have reached the entire group of native Africans. No onlythat, but trading was also a huge part of their life.

Page 9: Textbook Collier, Cantrell, Cudworth

The African trading system usually took place at Goa, Timbuktu, and Jenne. They were busycommercial centers, and this is how Islamic faith got spread to the different tribes. ThePortuguese and the Africans knew less about each other then they would do now. ThePortuguese had plantations witch then had another big source of trade going on, it trade wascalled the slave trade. Trading was power, if they had more trade, they had more money, more money equals bigger and stronger military. The Three Kingdoms, Songhai, Benin,Kongo, all wanted to be the only kingdom but they all had spacial item that each kingdomwanted. The Sarah highway was very vital to get these goods and also to go on crusades to gotake land.

The African Government was based on lineage. So basically you where born into a rank, butas you grew older you would move up in ranks. The oldest person was the highest rank andwas in charge. They believed if you where older then you would be smarter then all the otherpeople. They would also have all the leaders in charge go to a counsel meeting to discuss theproblems that they have or are seeing. But the elders also had another job too, they where incharge of being their religious leaders. They thought if you where older then you wherecloser to what they believe in, "the god in the sky" as they call it.
