Chief Executives Update

The late spring and the array of shows and Society sales soon polished off what remained of summer! Members were left with little time before the rush to provide the industry with good value, quality Texels for the start of a new breeding season.

The successful sales reported on the Society’s website are proof of members’ achievements and show that Texels have had another outstanding year. Improved marketing, including the new-look Society website, saw a rush of 21,000 visits with 80,000 pages viewed in August alone.

Society and breed promotion enjoyed increased expenditure in 2010, targeted at our presence at specialist events such as Scot Sheep and the National Sheep Event, which took place in August at Malvern. A truly professional promotion, at a highly successful event! Our Scottish National flagship sale didn’t fail to impress either, with a gross sale income of over £800,000 exceeding last year’s world-record breaking sale. The 2010 sale results show more ram lambs forward with better clearance, proving the continuous popularity of our breed from both commercial and pedigree breeders. Visit the Society website to read full sale reports and view colour photographs of pre-sale show winners from around the UK.

Commercial demand didn’t fade with the breed’s influence clearly present at the major ram sales at NSA Builth and Border Union-Kelso, more information within this bulletin. We now eagerly await our national AGM, held this year in conjunction with the Scottish Clubs 25th Anniversary and Drymsynie has been fully booked. If you were unsuccessful in booking space at this popular social weekend, think ahead and perhaps provisionally put your name down for next year’s event, to be held in Belfast at the La Mon Hotel in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Breeders Club in late October 2011. You won’t be disappointed, for sure!

Breeders have many challenges in managing a profitable flock. One such challenge is bio-security, which, when carefully managed, ensures the protection of your flock, most of all a valuable pedigree flock. I would encourage all breeders to consult their veterinary surgeon and to take a whole farm approach to limit the chances of disease entering your flock. As Christmas approaches we offer new and updated merchandise and look forward to your orders for some new Texel clothing which we hope you will wear with pride around the shows and sales helping us to promote Texels to the industry.

Finally, a warm welcome to the 389 new members that have joined the Society since I took the position of Chief Executive with 125 joining in 2010 alone. I hope you enjoy being part of our great Texel community.

BASCO invests to benefit members with improved Society service.

Members will be fully aware of the continued

development of the BASCO system. 2010 has seen the enhancement of the web search, now a major point of reference for many producers and breeders. BASCO is currently reviewing its member interface (Thin client), to allow a full web based version to come online by Easter 2011, which will allow for a more convenient way of sending your flock data to the Society, as well as receiving better flock reports at the touch of a button. This new investment by BASCO will mark another key development in BASCO’s successful history. If you have not visited the web search already go to the Society home page at www.texel.co.uk and click on the BASCO logo. It’s really that simple to access the Texel flock book with all the important pedigree and performance data just a few clicks away.

SOCIETY MATTERS

Tail Docking: Get It right!

The Society does not require tails to be docked within its breed standard. Breeders often choose to dock tails on welfare grounds due to prevention of fly strike. Some type of Texels are not tail docked at all, again this is breeder choice. Tail docking for cosmetic reasons cannot be justified. All sheep breeders should implement the Welfare Code, which requires careful consideration of the need for tail docking. The code of recommendations for the welfare of sheep can be obtained through Animal Health Offices. Breeders can find their nearest office by visiting the Animal Health website, www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealthWhen tail docking is necessary, lambs should be docked as early as practically possible after a secure maternal bond has been established, but not usually before they are 24 hours old. The Government agrees that this is good practice.Practice of short docking can damage the nerves and muscles of sheep leading to serious welfare issue which can cause considerable suffering later in life. Leave sufficient dock to ensure that the tail will offer sufficient cover as the lamb matures.

2011 starts with “S”

Lambing season is creeping up, bringing with it Ram Lambs named with “S”Suggestions from the office staff include:

Superior , Senator, Sassy, Shostakovich, Scallywag, Sooooo-Good, Sabre, Soldier, Supreme, Showman, Superstar, Slartibartfast, Shamrock, Superb, Shocker, Sexcellent, Show-stopper and Sid. Stun us with your inventiveness but one thing we do ask….. To prevent Dayna having a nervous breakdown in the catalogue department and a major test of the BASCO system members are asked not to use Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!!

NEW ZEALAND COMPETITION

EU imports of New Zealand chilled lamb continue to increase in the first half of the year. They jumped by 21% to the UK, the largest market but fell by 18% to Belgium the second largest market. Frozen exports to Germany fell by 24% and by 17% to the UK. Overall, NZ exports to the EU have fallen by 9,000 t. to 114,000 t. Supplies over the Christmas period are looking very tight with production being late and at a very low level following the snow storms that killed thousands of lambs. As a consequence, English lamb is very much in demand.

Sylvia Rawlings, Director representing Area 7 – East of England, will be retiring from the Society Board at our AGM on the 13th November 2010. Sylvia has made a huge contribution to the running of the Society and has always represented her area member’s views in Board discussions strongly. We will miss her forthright input and the support she has demonstrated over the years. Taking this into account the Board has used its sole discretion to review area boundaries.

The Board has concluded that the above boundary changes will take effect from 13th November 2010

PRT Updates

There are 20 new participant / Members recording in 2010

Recording pointers:

l Gimmer weights- try to weigh at the same time every year, after clipping or before tupping, this is most popular, again check your weights before you start.l Record all lambs -Don’t leave the poorest lambs out; you are preventing your best lambs of expressing themselves.l Use well-known rams or A I some ewes, this will help your connectedness & improve your own flock accuracy. Contact your A I company or may be work with another breeder at a central point.l Testing rams - 25 progeny are needed to achieve an accuracy figure of 95%l Any lambs wrongly weighed will increase or decrease the Index. It will correct itself when the animal creates progeny; again it will increase or decrease (CRASH) the Index, be careful! The index will always balance out.l PRT cannot emphasise enough that each management group is recorded in its own group, tell your Scanning operator.

For a full list of practical pointers for Performance Recorders visit the PRT section of www.texel.co.uk

Bumper sales bonanza for Texel at main commercial ram salesBorder Union - Kelso & NSA – Builth Registered British Texels were supplied in volume to fulfil commercial sheep industry demand. The influence of registered Texels on the UK commercial sheep industry is clearly shown by the financial performance of the two largest ram sales operated in Europe. The ram sales offer a useful barometer for the demand of commercially relevant breeds, NSA main sale sold £2,208,584.89 of rams, whilst the Kelso sale totalled £2,811,470.00 of rams at their 2010 events, no other ram sales operate on this scale. Both sales run in September 2010 showed that registered Texels were consistently in demand across GB, resulting in 28.1% of the total ring sales income at the NSA Builth ram sale (£626,071.50) and 30.3% of the sale ring income at the Border Union Kelso sale (£852,660.00).

Arnold Park-Drinkstone flock wins ‘Future Farmer’ award

A pioneering veteran of the UK’s sheep industry has won the ‘Future Farmer of the year’ award 2010, with a £4000 prize recognising innovation and sustainability. The current joint title holder of the Carmichael Trophy for services to the sheep industry, Arnold Park, of Drinkstone, Hawick, has added the prestigious title, awarded by the Elizabeth Murray Trust for innovation in farming and supported by NFUS. He is at the forefront of sheep recording in the UK. His Texels outrank others – achieving the top index lamb more times than any other breeder in the past 10 years.

Texel member tops the class as Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year 2010 Texel Breeders, William, Carole Ingram & Sons, Gregor and Bruce and Daughter Amy, of the Logie-Durno flock, Aberdeenshire, have been awarded Sheep Farmers of the year by the Farmers Weekly. The award was won because of their unique approach to ram breeding, maximising use of technology through AI, ET and performance recording, good marketing and customer focus. focus.

Texel Society 1st Season Sire of the Year TrophyThe inaugural winner of the Texel Sheep Society “1st season Sire of the Year” trophy is ‘Strathbogie Python’ – bred by James Innes & Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly, owners of the Strathbogie flock. Messrs Innes will therefore become the first recipients of this prestigious new trophy which will be up for annual competition. The qualifying National Society sales were held at Dungannon, Lanark, Welshpool & Worcester. There were actually six first season sires in close contention, those being fairly well ahead of their contemporaries, which included several top priced individuals.Strathbogie Python, whose owner John Forsyth (Glenside), purchased him for 9,000gns at last years Lanark Premier sale achieved a winning aggregate of 60,000gns for his three highest priced sons – namely, Razzle Dazzle (40,000gns), Ring a Ding (10,000gns) and Rocket 1 (10,000gns). Python showed a very high level of consistency with further sons reaching 4,000gns at Welshpool and 4,200gns at Worcester respectively, while a further four sons at the Solway & Tyne Club Sale (Carlisle) sold to 4,200gns and averaged £2,716 apiece. Dear Friends and Associates

I would like to thank all those who sent letters and cards of sympathy on the death of my husband Ken and the many who travelled

to come to the funeral. It is a great comfort to have the support of so many friends and to think that so many came to pay their last

respects.

Ken and I were involved with the Texel Sheep Society for over thirty years and in that time we made so many friends. Some of our

happiest memories are of our annual ‘holiday’ to the Lanark sheep sales where we enjoyed the hospitality of our Scottish friends, or the

‘good old days’ at the Royal Show with the light hearted stock judging competition and the barbeque that lasted long into the night –

those were the days.

It is most satisfying to see the progress that the Texel Breed has made since those early days, although Ken was always convinced that

modern rams were not a patch on good old Kingpin or Mischief, but that is the prerogative of the older generation. It is also a comfort

to know Barnage Texels, like so many other flocks, are safe in the hands of the younger generation.

Again my heartfelt thanks to you all for your sympathy. I do not intend to lose touch and hope to meet up with friends at coming sales.

Christine Martyn.

Testing for Maedi Visnais it worthwhile?

Maedi Visna (MV) is a disease of sheep which is fatal. There is no cure and no vaccine. The disease is out there! It is more common in areas of a high sheep population but very few areas can claim to be safe.

The rules of the MV accreditation scheme are designed to reduce the risk and the scheme has been very successful in doing this. As a result many producers see a low incidence and are wondering why they are still in the scheme. However with any disease, if you drop your guard, it could soon spiral out of control. Being a member of the MV scheme helps to safeguard your flock again disease breakdown and enhances breed reputation.

Consider why you are in the scheme.

l To maintain the health status and productivity of your sheepl To sell at society sales to maximise your returnsl To protect against long term losses and value of your flock

But should you not look at the wider picture?

l Give confidence to the sheep industryl Show a commitment to disease control and best practicel Assist long lasting breed improvement by having a productive healthy nucleus flockl Address bio security issues related to disease control

In a commercial flock (not a scheme member) 70% of ewes tested and half of the rams were found to be positive for MV. The increasing level of disease came to light when a thin ewe was submitted for post-mortem. The problem had been growing for a few years as the client reported that there were rising numbers of deaths among young lambs due to lack of milk which was also causing poor growth rates and extended finishing periods. In this case the whole flock may have to be culled. Just think if your flock had been in contact with the above.

The sheep industry is returning to profitability. The breed has a good reputation at home and overseas. Let us keep it that way by making sure that a disease that can rapidly affect productivity and profitability does not get a foothold. With a breakdown flocks are at risk at shows, sales and through buying replacements and if you lose accredited status you are out of the market for up to 12 months. Monitoring disease freedom is cheaper than tackling a disease that is allowed to increase in incidence.

Those of you who attend shows and sales will have seen simpler, but still robust, rules this year. It will still be necessary to have a current, valid health status report to enter accredited shows and sales but you do not need to hand in copies. However you must have it available for inspection.

Farm inspections are an integral part of the MV scheme and the numbers of these have been increased. Some scheme members are still breaking the rules – nose to nose contact with non-accredited stock at field boundaries (watch fences and gates – there must be no contact). Data shows that there is a 2.3 times higher risk of contracting MV in an accredited flock if non-accredited sheep are on same premises or in contact.

For further information contact PS&GHS - Tel: 01463 226995 or Email: [email protected] MV is out there. Be vigilant.

Demand from overseas continues with exports completed to Romania, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Ireland. Major orders have also been made from Brazil, a key new market for Texel.

Message from Brazil

From Monday August 2nd to Saturday August 7th 2010, I had the opportunity to visit eight Texel flocks and attend the NSA Sheep event in Malvern. During this period we checked the possibility of identifying eligible flocks which may be interested in exporting their genetics. Their interest in the Brazilian market was expressed in the way I was welcomed at their farms and the time spent providing us with information about the farms, breeding systems and the several males evaluated within the farms.

Despite constraints provided by the export protocol we were able to select a group of eligible sires that may be suitable for Brazilian breeders. An order of over 2,500 straws of semen will be placed by the end of the year to allow us to have a first export concluded by the end of January 2011.

I would like to thank the British Livestock and Genetics consortium and their funders, as well as the British Texel Sheep Society for making the mission possible. I truly believe that results from our work will be seen next year in the half bred British lambs that will be born in our country. I hope the efforts of Brazilian and British breeders will lead to our first import in the beginning of 2011. I do expect this to be the beginning of a long term commercial relationship that will bring great benefits for breeders in both countries.

Eurotier Promotion

16th – 19th of November EuroTier 2010, the world’s largest exhibition for professional animal husbandry taking place in Hanover in Germany. Over four exhibition days this is the place to experience innovations in machinery, equipment and installations, in genetics, farm inputs and decentralized energy supply. More than 1,800 exhibitors from 48 countries will be presenting a complete programme and many innovations. For further details visit the website at www.eurotier.com. The British Texel Society will have live exhibits at the event in conjunction with the “British Genetics” stand.

Romanian breakthrough!

Registered Texel Sheep bound for Romania.A consignment of Scottish sheep has recently arrived safely in the East of Romania. Amongst the order were 30 Texel Gimmers and 4 Texel Shearling Rams, all were sourced from flocks in the South of Scotland and are set to form the nucleus of a new sheep breeding programme of a large agricultural company in Romania. The 2007 outward mission which set the order in motion was supported through the British Texel Society’s promotion of Texels at Indagra 2007 in Bucharest. The Society continued its commitment in Romania with recent promotions at Cluj at the Agraria exhibition in May 2009 & 2010. The Texel flocks involved with the recent export were, Douganhill, Rascarrel and Garngour.
