Los Angeles Auto Show, marking the North Ameri-can debut o the latest version o the popular midsizesedan, introducing Hyundais Fluidic Sculpture design languageand an all our-cylinder engine lineup to the U.S. market.Sonatais the second vehicle in Hyundais 24/7 version 2.0 product ini-tiative (seven new models in the next 24 months) ollowing onthe heels o the all-new ucson.

Te 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the tra-ditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced our-cylinder engines, emotional design and luxury eatures oeredwith Hyundais strong value proposition. Te 2011 Sonata posessome intriguing questions:

Why cant a smart, solid sedan also have modern, sleek, so

phisticated style? Why pay so much to get a taste of luxury? Why cant an ecient four-cylinder engine give V6 power?

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN LANGUAGE

Beginning with the 2011 Sonata and 2010 ucson projects,Hyundai designers set to work about three and hal years ago onFluidic Sculpture. Fluidic Sculpture is a consistent, cohesive de-sign language that will ripple through the entire Hyundai show-room. In developing the initial Sonata sketches, Hyundai design-ers considered the interplay o natural, uid elements with morerigid suraces and structures to create the illusion o constant mo-

tion. Inspired by nature, Fluidic Sculpture injects sophisticationand dynamic angles into the shape o a vehicle and now serves asthe core o Hyundais uture design identity.

Te exterior o the all-new Sonata is long, light and low. Tehigh beltline allows or a long, sleek rooine accented by thethird window. A monoorm side profle includes owing lines

highlighted by a Hyundai signature chrome accent that spans

the length o the car. Normally, this type o trim is only oundaround the windows. On the new Sonata, this trim extends outrom the headlamps, juts up along the hood and through thebeltline. Te ace is bold with a large powerul chrome grilleand headlamps that integrate precise details. Te stance iscompleted by 16-, 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels.Te sophisticated look continues inside where Hyun-dai has created an upscale ambiance thanks to a ow-through center console and instrument panel. Teseowing suraces complement the exterior design andwrap around the driver and passengers.

HYUNDAI PACKAGING EFFICIENCY

Te sleek design, combined with Hyundais expertise in in-terior packaging, has produced an interior that delivers class-leading comort, unctionality and practicality. A sleek rooinetypically compromises headroom and interior volume but, at120.2 cubic eet, the Sonata has the most interior volume o its keycompetitors. It is so spacious, Sonata continues to be classifed bythe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Large car, truly aclass above Camry, Altima, Fusion and Malibu (all are categorizedas Midsize cars). Even in trunk room, the Sonata shines. Sonatas16.4 cu. ft. of trunk space gives it a 9.3 percent advantage over theCamry, and a 17.1 percent advantage over Accord.

ADVANCED POWERTRAINS

Te new Sonata will launch with Hyundais new Teta II GDI 2.4-liter our-cylinder engine with a Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI)fuel delivery system, which contributes to improved fuel eciencyand lower emissions. Sonata is the frst midsize sedan to adoptGDI technology as standard equipment in a naturally aspiratedpowertain. Tis shorter, more direct path o uel delivery, allows or

greater control o the uel mixture at the optimum moment, thus

improving eciency. Te fuel is injected by a camshaft-driven,high pressure pump that operates at pressures up to 2,175 psi. Di-rect injection also utilizes a higher than normal 11.3:1

compression ratio or increased power. Te pis-tons are dished to increase combustion

eciency in the cylinder. Tispowerplant will deliver best-in-class uel economy, best-in-class

Next year, Hyundai will add a 2.0-liter Teta II turbochargedGDI our-cylinder engine and a 2.4-liter Hybrid Blue Drivemodel eaturing Hyundais breakthrough lithium polymer bat-tery pack. SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

Hyundais commitment to makingthe Sonata extremely uel ecientcontinues with a six-speed automatictransmission with SHIFRONICmanual control or a standard six-speed manual transaxle.

Hyundais all-new six-speed au-tomatic A6MF2 transaxle helps thecompany meet its goals o improvinguel eciency and reducing emis-sions. Shits are silky-smooth withan option o manual control throughthe SHIFRONIC eature.

Drivers can access the SHIF-RONIC eature by moving the gearselector into a separate gate. Push-ing the selector orward or pulling itrearward will shit the transmissionup or down sequentially, addingto driver control. Te SE trim willalso eature steering wheel-mountedpaddle shiters. A clear LCD read-

out on the instrument panel shows the gear being used.Designed or transverse engine applications in passenger cars

and SUVs, the new compact transmission puts Hyundai into anelite class o auto manuacturers who have designed their ownproprietary six-speed automatic transmissions. Te strength othe design is its unique layout which makes it smaller, more com-pact and lighter than any other six-speed transmission on themarket today.

For the customer, the new six-speed delivers a perormanceedge. In this application, it helps brings a nine percent gain inuel economy (35 mpg* versus 32 mpg). Te gearbox has no dip-stick because it is lled with automatic transmission uid that isgood or the lie o the vehicle under normal usage conditions,thereby reducing maintenance costs.

Developed over a our-year period, this new six-speed auto-matic is 26.4 pounds lighter than the ve-speed it replaces. It alsois 1.6 inches shorter and considerably simpler, having 62 ewerparts, which is a key to increased durability, lighter weight andlower cost.

When it comes to transmissions, more gears are denitely bet-ter. Te addition o a sixth gear enables closer spacing between gearratios providing a better balance o perormance and uel economywhile the wide overall gear ratio helps deliver strong acceleration.

Te gearbox has three planetary gearsets and a unique attorque converter that shortens the units overall length by 0.47

inches. Four pinion diferentials improve durability and urtherminimize size.

Another example o engineering ingenuity is ound in thedesign o the hydraulic pressure control unit. Slight manuactur-ing deviations rom one solenoid valve to the next oten timescause uctuation in the hydraulic pressure and afect shit preci-

sion and quality. Te transmission eatured in the Sonata cleverly

integrates adjustment screws in the valves that enable each o theeight valves to be calibrated at the actory. Tis eature ensuresstable hydraulic pressure at any shit point which acilitates a highdegree o precision and control needed to deliver ast, smoothand precise shits throughout the rpm range.

SUPPLE RIDE, AGILE HANDLING

An advanced our-wheel independent suspension system com-bines a supple ride with precise handling and steering responseor Sonata GLS and Limited models. Sonata uses MacPhersonstrut ront and multi-link rear suspension systems with increasedtravel or improved wheel control and a smoother ride. All ourwheels are controlled by coil springs, ade-resistant gas-chargeddampers and stabilizer bars. Te suspension has been optimizedto keep the vehicle at during corning and provide quick turn-in response. Te rear suspension uses aluminum components toreduce weight and improve suspension perormance. Te GLSand Limited models also use advanced low-rolling resistance tiresto improve uel economy while maintaining good ride and han-dling perormance.

Te Sonata SE is an even more exciting and willing partneror drivers who preer sportier ride and handling dynamics. Tesport-tuned suspension eatures stifer springs and larger stabiliz-er bars, resulting in a 20 percent increase in roll stifness. UniqueSE dampers, including monotube shocks in the rear are used to

control the more aggressive suspension. Low prole 18-inch tiresround out the unique chassis components o the Sonata SE.

All Sonatas have column-mounted, motor-driven electricpower steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving condi-tions while improving uel economy over a conventional steeringsystem. A quick-ratio steering rack is used or crisp eel on turn-

in. Sonatas turning diameter o 35.8 eet is better than Camry,Accord, Altima, Fusion and Malibu.

WORLD CLASS POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO

One o the program targets or the 2011 Sonata engineeringteam was world-class power-to-weight ratio. Power-to-weight ra-tio pays dividends in both perormance and uel economy.

Sonata is rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. Te 2011 Sonata is 25 percent stifer in tor-sion and 19 percent stifer in bending rigidity than its predeces-sor, yet it is lighter than many midsize sedans, also ofering moreinterior room.

Tis ocus on power-to-weight ratio pays dividends across theboard. Te Sonata owes its ability to deliver both strong peror-mance and excellent uel economy in great part to its impressivepower-to-weight eciency.

ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES:

PART OF HYUNDAIS ASSURANCE COMMITMENT

Sonata is built rom the ground up with saety in mind, with ahot stamped ultra-high-strength steel body structure, advancedairbag technology and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), deliv-ering on Hyundais commitment to both active and passive saetytechnology leadership. Te prior generation Sonata was the rstmidsize sedan with standard ESC when it launched in March o2005. ESC was not standard equipment on Honda Accord untilthe 2008 model year and the 2010 model year or oyota Camry.Once again every 2011 Sonata has liesaving ESC as standardequipment.
