Dear New Employee,

Welcome to Teterboro Tower! Here you will have an opportunity to work with an

outstanding team of professionals that help make us a great place to work and develop

your skills. Your knowledge, abilities and positive attitude make you a highly regarded

addition to our team, and I am certain that you will have a positive impact on our future.

Teterboro is an exciting and challenging facility with the complexity and fast pace

demands of a much larger airport. This is your opportunity to develop and hone your

skills as an Air Traffic Controller. Your reputation and experience as a Teterboro

controller will be recognized throughout the agency.

Many successful controllers have begun their careers here and continue on to higher-level

facilities throughout the country. Teterboro is a great starting point.

All of us want to make your tenure at this facility as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

Teterboro Tower History

Teterboro is the oldest operating airport in the New York & New Jersey Metropolitan Area. Walter C. Teter acquired the property in 1917. During World War I, North American Aviation operated a manufacturing plant on the site. After the war, the airport served as a base of operations for Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aircraft designer. The first flight from the present airport site was made in 1919. During World War II, the Army and Air Force operated the airport.

In 1941, Fred L. Wehran made a $10,000 down payment on the 500-acre marshy tract now known as Teterboro Airport. At the time, the tract surrounded a single abandoned airstrip. But Teterboro soon became a bustling airfreight center. Mr. Wehran began with a crew of bush pilots who delivered men and material to remote prospecting sites in the West and in western Canada. In 1949, he sold the airport to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for $3 million dollars.

The Port Authority later leased it to Pan Am World Airways, and then to its successor organization, Johnson Controls for 30 years. The Port Authority assumed full responsibility for the operation of Teterboro on December 1, 2000.

Since the 1950s, Teterboro Airport has been creating large economic benefits and job opportunities in the local community. Since 1970, the Port Authority has invested $174 million dollars to upgrade the airport's facilities and open new areas of service to the aviation community.

The airport embraces its own history and that of the entire aviation industry with the inclusion of the Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum of NJ on the airport grounds.

Teterboro Airport at a Glance

The airport consists of 827 acres: 90 acres for aircraft hangars, maintenance and office facilities; 408 acres for aeronautical use; and 329 undeveloped acres.

Teterboro airport is designed as a “reliever” airport that serves vital interests and general aviation requirements of Northern New Jersey and the New York Metropolitan Area. The airport does not accommodate scheduled commercial air carrier operations.

The airport is a 24-hour public use facility that offers both visual non-precision and “all weather” precision landing capabilities.

The control tower was constructed on the east side of the airport by the FAA and went into operation on October 29, 1975.

Teterboro airport averages 175 to 200k aircraft operations a year consisting of 61% transient general aviation, 39% air taxi, and the remainder is a combination of military, local general aviation, and commercial aircraft.

Teterboro’s Fuel Providers and Aircraft Ground Support FBOs consist of First Aviation Services, Jet Aviation, Signature Flight Support, Meridian, and Atlantic Aviation.

Approximately 4.2 miles of taxiways exist on the airport. Most are 60 feet wide and many are equipped with centerline lighting systems.

Teterboro Airport Sectional Chart

Teterboro Airport is located in the NY Metroplex one of the busiest sections

of airspace in the world including Newark, LaGuardia, JFK, Morristown,

White Plains, and Caldwell Airport. It is operated under Class Delta surface

area rules, which is generally, that airspace from the surface to 2,500 feet

above the airport elevation (charted in MSL) surrounding those airports that

have an operational control tower. Unless otherwise authorized, each flight

(aircraft) must establish two-way radio communications with Teterboro

Tower prior to entering the airspace and thereafter maintain those

communications while in the airspace.

Teterboro Tower Leadership Team

Gary Palm is Teterboro Tower’s Air Traffic Manager and Larry Brady is the tower’s Staff Specialist. Both are welcoming individuals who work to assist the employees and improve the facility on a daily basis. Below are brief bios that outline their career path as well as describe their personal interests and hobbies.

Gary began his career in 1974 as an Air Traffic controller for the USAF and joined the FAA in 1979. His hobbies include golf, numismatics, and home renovation. Gary’s priorities are family, career, his employees and most of all taking a moment in time to enjoy his children and life.

Larry Brady, Staff Specialist, Teterboro Tower

After graduating from the Academy of Aeronautics I began my fulltime-working career with Grumman Aerospace. Working in the Manufacturing Engineering department on such aircraft as the EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawkeye, F-14 Tomcat and the Space Shuttle Wing. Then I won the lottery…I was selected/drafted, 14th on the draw. My Military time was not spent in ATC but rather in the jungles of Vietnam.

My FAA career began sometime after passing all required tests and waiting… Eventually hired off the street in 1974 and assigned to White Plaines ATCT (HPN), which at the time was an up-down facility. Here is where I was certified as a Control Tower Operator (CTO) and later RADAR Certified. After a brief interruption, I resumed my ATC career at FOK before being assigned to TEB.

Policies

Reporting for Duty

Each employee is required to report for duty on time. If the employee is going to be late, they must call the Supervisor on duty and advise ahead of time. If the employee is not excused, they may be required to take leave.

Hours of Duty

Each employee will work 5 eight-hour days for a total of 40hours/week. Schedules rotate weekly through days, evenings and mid-shifts.

Parking

Teterboro Tower has a private parking lot enclosed by a security gate. Upon arrival, employees will receive a parking permit for their vehicle.

Security/Building Access

A security gate encloses Teterboro Tower. Upon arrival, each employee will receive their own key card to allow access to the parking lot and facility.

FAA ID Cards

During your first week assigned to Teterboro, each employee will receive an FAA ID card that will allow him or her access to and from the facility.

Cell Phones

Cell phone usage is permitted within the facility however they are PROHIBITED to be used in the Tower cab.
