1. INTRODUCTION

1 . I Broad gauge Liquefied Petroleum Gas tank wagon type 'BTPGLN' having maximum axle load of 19.8 t has been designed bv RDSO for the transportation of Liquetied Petroleurn Gas over the entire BG svstem of the Indian Railways. The design incorporates fitment of CXShVB-22 NLB/NLbf bogies, non transition CBC and single pipe air brakes. The leading particulars of the wagon are indicated in RDSO's drg.No.WD-93047-S-51.This wagon is similar to 'BTPGL'wagon except fitment of CASNUB bogie. non-transition CBC and air brake in place of UIC bogie. transition CBC and vaccum brakes.

1.2 One 'BTPGLN'wagon No. WR 946573 with worn wheel profile was made available by wagon Dte of RDSO for c a v i n g out oscillation trials up to test speed of 100 kmph on Nagda-Ujjain-Bhopal section of \Vestem Railway . 1.3 Trials were conducted on the wagon in the months of October ZOO0 and N

November '7000 on the Nagda-Ujjain-Bhopal section of Western Railway in terms of Test Scheme to Wagon Directo'rate's note no. ;Ll\V/ BTPGL dated l~13/'7000. RDSO Speed Cenificate no. kIW1 BTPGL dated 7/I4/12.98~and amendment dated 76137.7.99: Commissioner of Railway Safety. Western Circle's sanction vide letter no. 12-512561657 dated 12.2000 and Western Rail\vav's Joint Safety Cenificate no. 25 of 1999.

*. 1.4 This report presents the results of detailed oscillation trials conducted on the BTPGLN wagon.

3. DESIGN FE.4TURES

3 I Broad gauge bogie coil wagon type BTPGLN has been designed by RDSO to drawing no. WD-93047-S-51 for the transportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas over the entire BG system of the Indian Railways.

3 .7 The length and width of the wagon is same as that of BTPGL wagon. The design incorporates fitrnent of CASNUB-22 XLBh'LM bocies I t has non-transition CBC and single - pipe air brake. The suspension system of the bogie is provided with elastorneric pads in primary mode and a g o u p of helical springs in secondary mode along with load proportionate friction snubber springs for damping

1. TEST PROCEDllRES AND ALLIED PARTICULARS

4.1 TEST TRAIN

One Electric Locomotive hauled the trial special comprising of Oscillograph Car BLRZ 7837 and Test Wagon BTPGLN \\'R 946523 as the trailing mosc vehicle. .'.

4.2 TEST VEHICLE i

For measuring lateral forces with the help of load cells. the cartridge taper roller bearings (CTRB) were replaced with 8cylindrical roller bearings. and wide jaw -:

4.4 TEST SECTION

Detailed oscillation trials were conducted on the followins stretches of Nagda- Ujjain-Bhopal dn. line section of Western Railway . details of which are placed as Annexure-2:

- Tajpur (TIP) station yard (km 70.35) from km 70-71 - 2" curved section at km 8215-82127 - Straight sections at km 92-93-94

1.5 TEST SERIES

4.5.1 The oscillation trials were conducted in empty and loaded condition according to the followiny two series:

Series l - The BTPGLN wagon in empty condition over straight. station yard and 2" curved track.

Series 11- The BTPGLN wagon in loaded condition over straight. station ? yard and 2" curved track. 37.6 ~onnes of LPG was loaded in [he ? wagon to simulate actual loaded conditions. 4

4 . 5 Wedge rests were conducted in both emptv and loaded condition.

4.6 TEST SPEED

4.6.1 The detailed sectional oscillation trials were conducted from an initial speed of 60 kmph to a maximum test speed of 100 kmph in empty condition and in loaded condition. Speed increments of 10 kmph were followed.

4.6.2 Confirmatory runs at 100 kmph were conducted in empty and loaded conditions between Ujjain (UJN at km 54.98) and Maksi (MKC at km 95.86).

5. CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT

The assessment of riding stability behavior of wagon is based on the yidelines laid down by the 3* Report of the Standing Criteria Committee. which is reproduced below:

5.1 Isolated peak values exceeding the above limit are permissible. provided the records show a stabilizing characteristic of the wagon subsequent to the disturbances.

5 . 3 .4 simultaneous assessment of the lateral force exerted by the adjacent axle at a point, where a particular axle exerts a high lateral force.

5.4 A derailment coefficient should be worked out in the form of ratio between the lateral force and the instantaneous wheel load. continuously over a period of 1/20 second. The ratio shall not exceed 1.

5.5 A seneral indication of stable running characteristics of the wagon as evidenced by the movement of the bogie on straight and cun.ed track and by the acceleration readings and instantaneous wheel load variations.

5.6 In the case of such wagons, where measurement of forces is not possible. evaluation shall be in terms of ride index which shall not be greater than 4.5. Value of 4.25 is preferred.

6. DISCUSSION OF TEST RESULTS a3

6.1 \VEDGE TESTS P 4 4

Wedge tests were carried out in the empty and loaded conditions bv moving the N

test wagon over steel wedges to determine the natural frequencies of oscillation in ,

bouncing, pitching and rolling modes. The specimen oscillograms of wedge tests .

are shown in Figure-5. The experimental and computed values of natural frequencies are given below: i

6.2.1 STABILITY

The values of parameters measured at various speeds to assess the stability of the BTPGLN wagon with worn wheel profile in empty and loaded conditions over the 3" curve, two straight tracks of 1 km length each and station yard TJP are given in Table-l and 2. The measurements were recorded on both the leadins and trailing axles of the trailing bogie of the wagon and the maximum values have been tabulated. The maximum values of the lateral force acting for more than 2 meters track length, derailment coefficient and dynamic spring deflection, i.e. the off- loading, for Series I and Series I1 are as follows:

Perusal of the above indicates that the recorded maximum value of Hy2m is 1.9 t 4 in emptv condition whichpuch.below the Prud Homme's limit of 3.79 t. and 2.9 t

in loaded condition which is below the Prud Homme's limit of 6.16 t. The maximum value of derailment coefficient is 0.44. which is again much below the permissible limit of 1.

Perusal of the above shows that for empty and loaded condition the maximum lateral acceleration recorded was 0.34 g and 0.42, maximum bogie rotation 0.80' and 1.6". and maximum bolster swing 12 mm and 26 mm, which is satisfactory The lateral movement of the bolster and the bogie rotation do not show any constraint in movement, as evidenced by the osci l lo~ams.

Sample ocsillograms are placed as Figires 7 and 9.

6.3 CONFIRMATORY RUNS

6.3.1 Confirmatory long run in empty condition was conducted for about 40 kms between UJN and MKC at a speed of 100 kmph. The results of kilometer-wise analysis of the oscillograms for the whole section are placed as Table-5.

Perusal of these results shows that the lateral force Hy2m has not crossed the Prud Homme's limit of 3.79 t and the maximum value recorded is 2.1 t at km 78-79. The corresponding derailment coefficient is 0.42, which is much below the safe limit of 1 . A maximum instantaneous vertical acceleration of 0.5 g was recorded at km 82-83. Other parameters, such as bolster swing and bogie rotation recorded show stable running characteristics. The data recorded during the long confirmatory run is in general agreement with the data of the detailed trial stretches. Sample oscillo.grams are placed as Figures 7 and 9.

6.3.2 21 confirmatory long run for about 40 kms in loaded condition at 100 kmph was conducted between UJN and MKC. The kilometer-wise analysis of the 4 oscillograms recorded is placed as Table-6. cO

Perusal of these results shows that the lateral force Hy2m has not crossed 4 d

the Prud Homme's limit of 6.46 t and the maximum value recorded is 2.9 t at kms CV 72-73. 84-85 & 92-93. The corresponding derailment coetxcient is 0.38. which is much below the safe limit of I . A maximum instantaneous vertical acceleration of 0.54 g was recorded at kms 59-60, 69-70 & 95-96. Other parameters. such as bolster swing and bosie rotation recorded show stable running characteristics. The

7. CONCLUSION

On the basis of oscillation trial results, as discussed above. the BTPGLN wagon with worn wheel profile exhibits satisfactory riding characteristics upto a test speed of 100 kmph in empty and loaded conditions on straight track. station yard ,, and on a 2" curve maintained to normal main line standards
