All Eyes On Kelly Kulick Heading Into USBC Masters MILWAUKEE—Now that Kelly Kulick has made bowling history as the first woman to qualify for a full-season exemp- tion on the Denny’s PBA Tour, the real work begins. Since Kulick qualified for the tour after finishing sixth at the Denny’s PBA Tour Trials in June, she has been the focus of widespread media attention. She has made appearances on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” CNN, ABC’s “World News To- night” and has been featured The New York Times, Chicago Tri- bune and USA Today among many others. The initial media blitz sub- sided but will no doubt pick up again at each tour stop beginning with the first major of the sea- son — the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Masters, scheduled for Oct. 24-29 in sub- urban Milwaukee. “After all the media attention, I’m looking forward to the start of the season,” Kulick said. “The time since the tour trials has gone by pretty quickly, but I feel I’m going to be well prepared.” To stay sharp, the 29-year- old Union, N.J., resident works out to keep in shape, practices four days a week and has com- peted in a few PBA regional tour- naments. In August, Kulick joined Liz Johnson as the only woman to win a PBA regional when she defeated tour regular Tommy Delutz Jr., 20-19, in a two-ball roll-off after the two tied at 221 in the championship match. “Bowling the regionals gives me the experience I need to go up against the top players,” Kulick said. “The more experi- ence I can get bowling against higher-caliber players, the more comfortable I’ll feel bowling week-in and week-out on tour.” Kulick’s dream has always been to earn a living as a profes- sional bowler, but the dream seemed to crumble when the Professional Women’s Bowling Association ceased operations in 2003. Kulick was an up and com- ing bowler on the PWBA Tour, earning top rookie honors in 2001, and on her to way to a promising career. Not long after breaking through and winning her first title — the 2003 U.S. Open, a major on the PWBA Tour — Kulick was looking for a new job. “I wanted to come out and bowl no matter what, whether it was against men, women, even internationally,” Kulick said. “When the PBA opened its doors it was an opportunity to bowl against the greatest bowlers in the world. I can learn more being out here.” Other women have been able to find limited success on the PBA Tour. Most notably Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who was a standout on the PWBA Tour, made history by becoming the first woman to win a PBA regional and finished sec- ond in a PBA national event in 2005. Kulick had an outstanding collegiate and amateur career be- fore turning pro. A three-time col- legiate player of the year, Kulick was also a three-time Team USA member and the 2000 Women’s U.S. Amateur champion. In 1999, she was a gold medalist in the Pan Am Games and also won a gold and two silver medals in the FIQ World Championships. The USBC Masters is the sport’s most prestigious event and will feature an expected field of more than 450 of the world’s top amateur and professional bowlers. A major on the Denny’s PBA Tour, bowlers will be com- peting for a top prize of $100,000 and an overall prize fund of $350,000. The Masters is open to all USBC members with a 190 or higher average. For entry infor- mation, visit bowl.com or con- tact Tom Boedecker at (800) 514-2695, ext. 3415 or by e- mail. The televised finals of the USBC Masters will be held on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. EST at the Wisconsin Exposition Center, located at State Fair Park in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis, Wis. To purchase tickets to the finals, visit bowl.com or call (800) 514-2695, ext. 3283. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Pi- azza and his staff at Keystone Lanes and Mike Cammarata & Staff at Del Rio Lanes for their continued support. We’d also like to extend a belated thank you to Dave Wodka of Ebonite In- ternational. See you this weekend! Bob’s Break Throught! SAN DIEGO—Admiral Robinson Center hosted the NABI tournament last weekend, & (converted to left hand) Bob Selner won for the first time in over two years. Bob has been a regular NABI bowler for many years, first as a strong right hander & now as an amazingly talented left hander. Finding the conditions exceptionally good (it took +113 to qualify!), Bob & eleven other semifinalists battled for the five slots in the finals. Bob was the top quali- fier, & ironically bowled another converted (& equally talented) left hander, Fred Johnson, in the title match. Both bowlers were steady & consistent, and the outcome was a victory for Bob by a slim seven pins. Congratu- lations to both of you! Also included in the steplad- der finals were Jeff Greer, James Smith & first time finalist Herb Stansberry, one of our faithful Riverside area supporters. Sharing the 3-6-9 pot this tournament were Zirie Benton, Tony Nunez, Robert Gilg, Norm Rauch, Carol Lee, Gene Walker, Paul Passarino & Johnson. Mike Tangonan was rewarded for roll- ing 9 in a row. Guaranteed $50 sidepots went to Jorge Alvarez, Gil Gissendaner. Jim Nunnally, Phil Horn (1 1/3), Arlene Bautista (1/3), Sue Greer, Max Caguioa, Brian Watkins, Smith & Selner (1/3) . For finishing in 6 th Place, Sue Greer won the ball resurfac- ing & rejuvenation courtesy of Bowlers Depot, Kearny Mesa. Our next NABI event is Oc- tober 14 th at Kearny Mesa Bowl. Details will be in the Bowling News next week. Save the 14 th , for us … we’ll save a cookie for you!! Young Star Join Former Pros In Woman’s Challenge Finals GREENDALE, Wis.—Co- lombian bowling star Clara Guerrero may not have years of professional experience behind her, but she proved she has what it takes to compete against the sport’s best by earning a spot in the United States Bowling Con- gress Women’s Challenge finals. Guerrero defeated nine-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association titlist Kim Terrell of Antioch, Calif., 216-203 Mon- day night on ESPN2 and grabbed the last of four spots for next week’s final show. Both players opened the match with three consecutive strikes, but two open frames by Terrell proved to be the difference. The five-part, made-for-TV event was filmed over two days in a single-lane arena in the middle of the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas and has been airing on ESPN2 every Monday night since Sept. 11. Although it began with 16 women bowlers vying for the title and $25,000 first prize, only four remain. Guerrero, the 2005 World Ranking Masters champion and a member of the Colombian na- tional team, will be joined in the finals by former PWBA standouts Leanne Barrette of Elk Grove, Calif., Cara Honeychurch of Melbourne, Australia, and Carolyn Dorin- Ballard of North Richland Hills, Texas, who combined for 54 pro- fessional titles. “When I was younger I used to watch these women on TV and looked up to them,” said Guerrero, who topped Team USA member and 2005-06 Col- legiate Player of the Year Ste- fanie Nation of Orlando, Fla., 188-154 in her first match of the night. “To be able to bowl against them is an amazing opportunity, especially since there are so few tournaments for us to compete in these days.” In Monday’s first match, Terrell disposed of fellow Jun- ior Team USA assistant coach Kendra Gaines of Orlando, Fla., 235-188. The two are good friends, but also have a history on the lanes. Gaines beat Terrell for the first of her two PWBA titles. “It was a lot easier to focus than I thought it would be, and it turned out to be a really fun environment to compete in,” said Terrell, who also is the USBC Collegiate spokesperson. “Of course I’m disappointed and I think I threw it a lot better than the scores show, but you can’t win if you miss spares. Clara bowled very well, and all of the younger players have an under- standing of the game I don’t think I had at their age. But in the end, I think we all came out here hoping this could spark an interest in women’s bowling. We all embraced the opportunity and did our best to put on a good show. Win or lose, it was an amazing experience.” Next Monday on ESPN2 at 9:30 p.m. Eastern, Barrette and Honeychurch will square off, while Guerrero takes on Dorin- Ballard. The winners then will meet to determine the Women’s Challenge champion.

Instruction to Help Raise Your Scores

What is Your BIQ(Bowling Improvement Quotient) ?

Advanced Fundamentals.A Secret for the Sincere Bowler – Part 1

Have you ever wondered what makes a successful coach suc-cessful? Well, among other things, every qualified teacher/coach isaware of one overriding principle when working to improve bowlerswho seek help. That principle involves the simple fact that nomatter which advanced techniques may already be familiar to thatstudent, nothing in the way of permanent improvement can be at-tained unless the basic fundamentals are being correctly and consis-tently executed.

In other words, no matter how well known the advanced aspectsof any sport…including bowling…may be to the player, those ad-vanced principles and techniques simply won’t work unless thebasics are correctly and consistently executed.

Basic, basic, basic! If you think back over the months and years of my instructional

articles, you’ll be forced to agree that the vast majority of subjectshave dealt with such basics.

This is no accident. In any number of the conversations I’ve hadwith top coaches as well as PBA pros, we’ve agreed that when allbowlers, including professionals, develop some flaw or other intheir basic fundamentals, the advanced techniques they’ve beensuccessful with suddenly fail to get the desired results.

This means that even though advanced fundamentals are differ-ent, that doesn’t mean they aren’t connected to the basics. Theydefinitely are. It’s just that advanced concepts of our sport can’twork without the basics being sound. This is proved by the fact thateven bowling’s top professionals can’t be successful when theirbasics falter, despite everything else being correct!

So…having spent so much time on basics, the purpose of thisarticle is a bit different…it is just what the headline suggests…thefundamentals of some advanced techniques. In other words, ad-vanced fundamentals. Some Examples:

The Fan (Hitch hike):This technique involves a clockwise (left handers counterclock-

wise) twisting snap of the wrist, done only at the very finish of thefollow through. This little snap/twist brings the thumb toward 1 or2 o’clock (11 or 10 o’clock for left handers), so that at the very endof the follow through, two important things are accomplished:

First, this hitch hike effectively eliminates any possible chanceof overturning the hand (topping the ball). Second, it gets rid of that

bothersome “chicken wing” follow through forever.Think about it…how many times, after having done everything

else correctly, have you caught yourself weakening your shot byeither topping the ball or chicken winging…or both? Well, this littlebit of advanced fundamental technique will cure those problemsforever.

When I taught this to Betty Morris, (PWBA Hall of Famebowler of the decade for the 1970s) her 10 pin leaves became al-most non existent. She remarked, “ Gosh, Rolf, I haven’t felt myfingers burn like that since I was on tour!”

The reason for this is simpler than you may think. The positivetorque (twisting force) effect of any rev action put into the ballduring the release is greatest with minimum hand turn, which you’llfeel in your fingers…and is lost by overturning the hand (topping/chicken winging). So since the fanned (hitch hiked) follow throughhelps keep the hand behind the ball longer, a more powerful releaseis the result.

This hitch hiked (fanned) finish may take a bit of practice, but isdefinitely worth it in improved pin action and strike power. Theextra pin action it creates also helps in reducing splits. Any bowlerwould do well to spend some practice time on it.

The Trigger/Hit Technique:This is definitely an important fundamental for all sincere

bowlers. Why? Because it will absolutely refuse to work with amuscled armswing, so you must do a bigger pushaway. That biggerpushaway helps create the all important free armswing, so you’llkill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

“Trigger/hit” works as follows; “Trigger” is like triggering off apistol shot with the fingers to release the ball.

“Hit” is simply the act of imagining you are “hitting” the ball, aterm familiar to every professional player. It refers to the act ofpowering the release with a hand action at the bottom of the swing, rather than with a muscled arm action to initiate the downswingfrom the top, as so many bowlers do.

The difference is dramatic. With the all important free armswingallowing the ball to swing the arm (rather than the arm powering theball downward), the entire amount of action is saved for the releaseitself, rather than being wasted by putting force into the arm. Keepin mind that it’s not the arm that knocks down pins…it’s the ball!

This difference becomes more obvious when you actually feelit. The sensation is a bit unusual at first…it is a sensation of all theforce traveling from the hand up the arm to the shoulder, rather thanfrom the shoulder down into the hand. So the expression

“hitting” the ball is apropos, since it feels almost as if the ball isactually being hit, rather than just released.

So…”trigger/hit” is merely putting the two together to createthe release…the correct way to put the power where it belongs…intothe ball! This is definitely an advanced fundamental, since the com-bining of these two actions depends so strongly on the free armswingto be successful.

Converting splits…and knowing when it is best to avoid eventrying: Here is an advanced fundamental that really pays off forany bowler:

First, let’s eliminate those splits which should not normally beattempted in the first place, except during practice. They are the socalled “unmakeable” splits. 5 such splits commonly exist: The 7-10,the 8-10, the 7-9, the 4-6 and the 4-6-7-10. It’s wise to just go for pincount on these.

Notice I said, don’t normally attempt them. Obviously, if youhad to make one of these or lose $10,000 dollars, you’d try for it.But here is the logical reason you normally would just go for pincount:

To make the 7-10, you’d have to hit whichever of those pinsyou’re after, by contacting a tiny place on the outside of that pinonly a hair over 100th of an inch wide. Worse, even if you wereaccurate enough to manage it, that pin would slide across the lane soweakly, that it might actually touch the other pin and merely make itwobble.

This is also true of the 4-6, the 8-10 and the 7-9. So as I saidabove, unless you’d lose big money, just go for pin count instead. Itis well known among high level bowlers, that however many unin-tended pins you leave by trying for an unmakeable split, that num-ber often doubles at the end of the game. In a close match, those extrafew pins can cost you the win.

Makeable splits:These come in two categories…baby splits and wide splits.Baby splits:Many bowlers do this wrong, by attempting to drive one pin into

the other, such as in the 4-5, the 5-6, the 7-8 or the 9-10, for example.Actually, an accurate shot toward the missing middle pin is thecorrect way. In other words, to convert the above splits (in thatorder) simply shoot for the 2 pin, the 3 pin, the 4 pin and the 6 pin.

This also goes for the 3-10 or the 2-7.Here again, consider that both ball and pins are wide enough to

convert the split if you shoot for the missing middle pin!Sure, it requires accuracy. So what? All splits require accuracy.

However…it actually requires less accuracy, mathematically, to shootfor that missing middle pin, than to try to drive one pin into the other.

Wide splits:Here, again, many bowlers make the mistake of adjusting the feet

a board or so right or left, in an attempt to deflect the desired pinacross the pin deck into the far pin on the other side.

Wrong again! But why?Simple…let’s just take one example to prove the point…the 4-7-

10 and the 6-7-10. Again, taking ball width, pin width and pin spac-ing into consideration, all these dimensions create a good enoughchance to convert the split by shooting for the phantom pin!

What is the phantom pin? Well, in both the above cases, it is thecorner pin. Shooting for that, allows you the best mathematical chanceof converting the split.

But what if the split consists of just the 4-10, or the 6-7, all bythemselves?

You guessed it. For the 4-10, shoot for the 7 anyway, even thoughit isn’t standing…and for the 6-7, shoot for the missing 10. That’swhy those are called phantom pins…because you shoot for themwhether they are standing or not.

LAS VEGAS—The entries in the 5th annual National DeafMaster Bowlers Association tournament held at the OrleansHotel Bowling Center were at all time low 21. Founder Director BillCozad added handicap but it did not help draw more bowlers butnevertheless the tournament went on.

The tournament turned out to be a battle of two great deafbowlers, Carl Malucci, the left-hander from Whittier, CA and PeterKaczmarczyk, the right hander from Warren, MI. Malucci is thedeaf prolific 300 shooter while Kaczmarczyk is the leading deafPBA money earner and holder of many NDMBA scoring records.

At the tournament’s end, it turned out Malucci was the eventualwinner breaking three of Kaczmarczyk’s 8 records.

In the Saturday morning’s first 6 games block of 12 games quali-fying round, Pete Kaz as he was nicknamed, finished with a 1410including the morning block’s high game 269. Also Malucci’s 279 tied thehigh game of 279 by Kevin Moran in 2002.

Malucci finished the day at the top with a 2909 total, 62 pinsshort of Pete Kaz’s record of 2971 made in 2001 at Orlando. PeteKaz finished second with 1271 and 2681 total. Top six bowlersfinished with zero handicap, John Fisher, Ohio 3rd with 2511,

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

SANTA FE SPRINGS -Premiere Lanes was the site ofour latest session. Tough, oldschool lanes that these bowlersneed to experience. We thank thestaff and management for thegreat accommodations this week-end.

While most of the bowlersstruggled a bit, we did have a fewsave this weeks article. EddieSayles liked this shot and pro-ceeded to post 234-269-247/944. Way to go Eddie. Standingalone in the 800 club we haveJ.D. Pelow with 248-214/846.Nice! Other reportable scoringincludes Darren Pascual 201/744, James Hawkins 224/741,Bryan Osborne 208/732, andMark Curtis 210.

This week, I’m going to in-troduce you to just the teamnames and let’s see if you canguess who the bowlers are. Wehave (in no particular order)“Seeing Double”, “New Kids onthe Lanes”, “Sherie’s Boys”,“Divine Impact”, “Chunky BeefStew”, “Sun Blockers”,“Blondies Rule”, “Never Here???”, “Invisible Team”, “Oppo-site Extremes”, ”E Kinda Mean”,and “Two for the Money”. HaveFun.

The SED Jr. Travel groupwill be taking byes for the nexttwo weeks, but will return onOctober 21st at AMF CarterLanes in Fullerton. Bowlersplease remember that our starttime is 2:00 in uniform.

Girls Jr. All-Starsby David Gordon

SANTA FE SPRINGS - Theyoung ladies of the Girls Jr. All-Stars took to the wood at Pre-miere Lanes this past Sunday. After a quick update of this yearsrules, they hit the floor with highexpectations. However, Premierecan be a reality check, read on.

One veteran knew just whatto do as Deanna Carrillo put upbig number of 213-215-205/812.Very Nice Deanna. We also hadMelissa Pena with 221/735 andJillian Gaddison a 204 game.

As promised, our ladies forthe season are Veterans; DeannaCarrillo, Jillian Gaddison, Lind-say Hannasch, Melissa Pena andTabetha Reynolds. We welcomeRookies; Jasmine Morales,Nicole Perrenoud and KatherenRoss. The home centers for theseladies are Brunswick WestCovina, Jewel City Bowl, Pre-miere Lanes and Santa ClaritaLanes.

This year the small but tal-ented group will try a singles for-mat. In this manner, we have 8teams instead of 4 teams of two,so that the girls don’t bowl thesame team as often like we didlast year. This also allows us flex-ibility with the lanes we use, whereby we could double up ifneeded or spread out for a showof presence. I’ve told the girls thatin December, we’ll re-evaluatethis format to see if we want tostick with it. A new and excitingyear.

After a couple of byes, wewill return to the lanes on Octo-ber 22nd at AMF Carter Lanesfollowing the JAT Tournament. Our start time is scheduled for2:00. Therefore ladies, get insome good practice and rest.Good luck with you’re bowlingover the next two weeks. I’ll seeyou at Carter.
