I also launched the Andover Gazette in September 2007 with a circulation of 10,000. This brings the number of Gazette magazines published to five, reaching half a million households each year.

Support Needed for the Andover Citizen’s Advice BureauThe search is continuing for people to come forward as patrons of the Andover Citizen’s Advice Bureau which is desperately in need of support to keep the service going. They are asking for supporters to pledge £4 per month. This would help them continue with around 11,000 appointments with people in need of help, in particular those with debt problems. To pledge your support visit their fundraising page by visiting www.andovercab.org.uk/HTML/fundraising.html

DBB Solicitors…

…combining law with the communityParkes Browne and Brockmans solicitors have merged to create DBB Solicitors, bringing a fresh approach to handling legal matters and a passion for its place in the community.

Convenient: Offices in Andover and Stockbridge, clients are welcome to be seen at either location.

Flexible: Appointments can be arranged between 7.30am and 7pm, home visits possible.

Transparent: No hidden costs and payment plans can be arranged.

Personal: Face-to-face relationships with someone you can trust to help you through the legal process.

Alison Brockman, David Browne and Managing Partner Michelle Duckworth

It was party time in Stockbridge as newly merged legal firm DBB solicitors celebrated its launch.

Guests gathered in the superb orangery at the Three Cups Inn after plans to hold the event in the gardens of the Clarendon Court offices were switched due to the bad weather.

Guest of honour was Romsey MP Caroline Nokes and the party was also an opportunity for DBB solicitors to pursue its passion for the community by inviting two charities to use the event to raise their profile and increase awareness of the work they do.

One of DBB solicitors’ aims is to increasingly build its reputation as a progressive and caring law firm with a proactive approach to working with all aspects of the community.

The Three Smiles fun club is based at Andover Leisure Centre and is a multi-activity programme for young people aged 0-19 years with additional needs.

They can take part in weekly activities alongside siblings every Sunday afternoon during term times.

Activities include trampolining, soft play circuits, junior boxing, arts and crafts, badminton and archery.

BUGS, the Salisbury-based Burns Unit Group Support, told guests how burn patients can suffer years of pain and suffering, operations and many mental and physical difficulties.

Families too can suffer long term difficulties. Post hospital support for survivors of burns is very sparse in the UK and in this region the support offered by BUGS is the only befriending support of its kind available to people who have been burned.

DBB solicitors have offices in Stockbridge and Andover, where a second celebration was planned.

Losing someone through death is something we all know is a fact of life, but that doesn’t mean it is always easy to cope with. Pain, embarrassment and not knowing what to say, make it a subject which people tend to avoid and when we are grieving, it can feel as if there is no one who understands what we are going through. When someone we love, know or care about dies, it can be a tremendous shock, even when we know it is about to happen. If the death is sudden and unexpected it can be even more difficult to accept. Furthermore if the relationship with the person who died was difficult, this can produce even more conflicting emotions.

We all have to experience the loss of people we care about at some point in our lives and that pain is the price we pay for loving and being loved. Those first weeks and months are difficult and emotionally exhausting but somehow we get through it. Sometimes though we can become stuck somewhere in the process of grieving; it can feel as if nothing is any clearer and the pain is as raw as it was the day we lost that person.

When this happens, having someone to talk to about this experience can help. Often, when we are grieving, we experience emotions that are completely unexpected such as anger, frustration, guilt shame or relief. It can be difficult to admit these feelings to others, for fear of shocking them or burdening them with our emotions. Grief can affect us physically too, a poor appetite, lack of sleep and emotional exhaustion may add to your distress and make it difficult to see the way forward. Concentration and decision making may be affected, which in itself can be very distressing and add to feelings

of helplessness and depression.

At Wings Counselling we can help you to talk through the difficult and painful feelings and thoughts that you may be experiencing, and find a way to make sense of them. Grieving is a process but there is no right or wrong way to experience it. Each one of us has to find our own way and an understanding, experienced counsellor can listen to the thoughts and feelings, worries and fears which cannot be shared with family or friends and through this help you to begin to look to the future again.

If you would like to talk to someone about your experience of bereavement or any of the issues discussed here, then please contact me at Wings Counselling. Telephone number 01794-511554, email address info@ wingscounselling.com.

ESTABLISHED IN 1978 by Alan Drummond, Drummond Heating is a family run plumbing and heating business based in Romsey, Hampshire.

Growing up on a Southampton estate as one of 11 children in a three bed house, life could have turned out very differently for Alan and his brothers.

Leaving school at just 14, Alan began work on Southampton Docks to support his parents.

After a short stint as a motor mechanic, Alan met his wife Diane and was given the opportunity to retrain as a heating engineer, before setting up Drummond Heating at age 24.

Brothers Robert and Tony Drummond joined the business in 1981, followed by their sister Rosemary in 1994.

A Real Family Aair

Children, Christopher (28) and Heidi (29), are now also part of the team and hope to continue their father’s success.

With over 100 years combined plumbing and heating experience, this is a family led rm that you and your family can depend on.

SINcommitment to evaluating its programmes has grown exponentially; between 2004 and 2010, more than 95 external evaluations were commissioned under the EPG framework (Figure I). These formed the basis of the Meta-Evaluation

Reports, produced annually by ACF-UK, representing some one of the most systematic appraisals of the organisations’ performance. Evaluations have also played

A key role in strengthening the evidence-base for new and innovative areas of ACF intervention, including

The Estate & Letting Agent Awards are the largest and longest running awards in the estate and letting agent industry. Known in the trade as The ESTAS, the competition determines the best agents in the country through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent. Over 33,000 questionnaires were completed by customers during the competition.

The competition this year also recognised individual excellence by short listing members of staff based on the feedback received from their own clients.

As Simon Brown, who runs the ESTAS, explains “the ESTAS has always been, and will continue to be a team competition, but we also believe staff who have been integral to the customer service experience should be recognised. We are therefore highlighting individuals based

on the comments we have received from the thousands of customers who have completed questionnaires.”

Twenty five members of staff from agents of all different shapes were shortlisted in the category sponsored by LCA Recruitment and just 5 individuals received a Highly Commended Award.

Carole Bazzoni from Martin & Co based in London Street, Andover commented “I am absolutely delighted to have won an individual award at the ESTAS. The awards means so such because it’s my clients who have rated me not a judging panel. We pride ourselves on high levels of customer service as this award shows we must be getting it right!”

The ESTAS are organised by Awards for Business www.theestas.com

Advertising in the Test Valley Gazette has generated a great deal of business to my Pilates Reformer studio. Being a unique and specialised business it is a great way to get your message out to local people. The team at Test Valley Gazette put together my ad making the process very simple. If you’re looking for new clients I highly recommend trying them out.Dawn Cleland – Pilates Works

I find the gazette a very good form of advertising as it is delivered to all local people, and I get a good response from it. It is also picked up from people who live outside the area. I find working with Tracey is very good, as she always goes that extra mile to make sure you are happy with your advert before it goes to print and comes up with some good ideas to help promote your business.Peter Chant – The Oak & Pine Barn – page 3

We have advertised with the Gazettes for many years now and find that they are very well recieved in the community. They are a good source of advertising and work well for our business. Would highly recommend anyone considering to advertise to use the Gazettes.Allan–- Kimbridge Restaurant – page 5

I launched my business Chipsaway, two years ago in the Winchester area. Since then I have expanded in to the Romsey, Chandlers Ford and Totton areas with my colleague Paul Broom.

After trading for six months I was contacted by Tracey and she sold me advertising space in her Test Valley Gazette. After a couple of months I could see a steady flow of enquiries coming through. Many of my colleagues were feeling the squeeze but I believe thanks to Tracey and her magazine I kept busy.

We have tried other methods of promotion but would never drop our entries in the three publications that Tracey looks after for us.

I help other new franchisees launch their businesses around the Southern area and after listening to the results I have had with Tracey they all now use similar publication in their areas.

Tracey understands our needs and designs and updates our adverts when she feels it is necessary. All in all she is a valuable part of our advertising programme.Angus Mekie – ChipsAway

Mirror, signal, outmanoeuvred.Try this simple test. Get someone to ask you a question about something you did earlier today.

Apparently, in the split second before you answer, you’ll turn away from them.

It’s involuntary.

And unavoidable.

It’s called ‘picturing up’. This is when your brain recalls the event in your head.

This happens any time one is asked to recall events.

So, naturally, if this situation occurs in a car, your attention will momentarily switch away from your windscreen and mirrors.

As happened to me when talking to one of my sisters on my car phone the other day on the A303 driving home from work.

She’d asked me a question and, as she couldn’t hear me well, I stupidly took my phone out of its cradle and onto my ear to tell her I’d call her back later on my land line.

And in the split second I was ‘picturing up’, I failed to see the dark blue unmarked police BMW series 3 barreling up behind me. But I saw his ‘blues and twos’ only too well as he shepherded me into the nearest lay-by.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one ‘picturing up’ whilst on my mobile recently.

For fast-forward two weeks, and you’d find me attending a Hampshire Police/AA Driver Awareness Training course initiative in the Holiday Inn conference room in Eastleigh, along with 23 other hapless drivers who had also all been caught talking on their mobiles

whilst driving on Hampshire’s roads over the past couple of weeks. (The majority of which had also been collared by that beamer.)

‘Picturing up’, stopping distances in the dry and the wet, ‘unintentional blindness’, internal/external distractions and reaction times were a few of the fascinating facts I learnt from this two and a half hour-long session.

The police offer this awareness course for drivers who’ve either been caught speeding or were on their mobile phones.

Instead of a £60 fine and three points, you pay £85 for admin. costs, but get no points.

Still, if you want to avoid either, my advice is simple, don’t speed, or talk on your mobile whilst driving.

Unless it’s on hands-free.

And nowhere near that ruddy dark blue BMW!

Have you got any amusing/interesting stories concerning speeding/talking on your mobile when you shouldn’t have been?

Please let us know by: using our Rant Room; writing a blog, tweet, email or submitting an article; making a short film, viral or mp3 audio file to YSB.COM.

Dear Friends,With the recent appalling UK weather you may be still searching for that perfect cruise holiday. We have some smashing late offers available for 2012 departures on our website. We can’t print them all here because the prices change too rapidly. There are also, of course, some stunning deals for your 2013/14 cruise holiday. Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International have extended their early booking offers until 31 August 2012. So if you’d thought you’d missed out on the best prices, plus extras such as free parking, think again, you still have time. We’ve listed a few popular itineraries in this edition, but there are many more to choose from. Our full brochure is the best place to narrow down your options. If you don’t have a copy, give us a call or pop in. It can be tricky deciding on the best cruise line, the best ship to sail on, the best destinations to visit, and the best time of year to travel. Above all, to make sure you get the best value for money. Trust us, it’s taken our staff a while to master the knowledge. We’re only too pleased to share this information to help you make the right decision. So, being local, why not just come on in? We’ll help you with everything - except your packing! And it’s not just ocean cruises we sell. We’re just as keen on river cruises. In fact, read on and you’ll find out about our new ‘Springtime in Holland’ charter in 2013. It’s a peach. But don’t leave it too long on this one. There are only 110 spaces available on the beautiful 5-Star Elegant Lady, so it will sell out fast. Hope to see you soon. Happy reading!

If you’re on our direct postal mailing list you’ll have seen, and no doubt pored over, the 24 page Oceania Cruises Lifestyle Brochure we sent with our June 2012 Newsletter. By the way, if you’re not on the list you really risk missing out. The Newsletter had some exclusive Oceania offers to the Med in 2012 and the Caribbean in 2013. You may recall we told you about how wonderful Oceania is in the April Gazette. Kim and Vicky were invited to the naming ceremony of the brand new Riviera ship, which launched in May, and they raved about it. As we go to press, Cliff, our managing director, is currently cruising on Oceania Marina, sister ship to Riviera. He’s bound to have loved it. So there we go. Earlier this year the brand was totally new to us. Yet already we can talk about it from personal experience. That’s why we say we’re your ‘personal cruise consultancy’! Call us or pop in to pick up your own copy of the brochure.

This cruise takes you to a world of its own; a world of fjords, a world of overwhelming grandeur, of immense mountains and awe-inspiring wilderness. The famous North Cape of Europe is further north than Alaska! Reindeer roam wild on the barren hills. The fjords tower over cruise ships in a way that’s both picturesque and awesome. The sheer magnificence can literally take your breath away. That’s if you’ve any breath left after all the pleasures of the fabulous Celebrity Infinity.

Junk to Funk Trashion Show raises £250 for Project Moz

Avondale School’s student council ran a superb fashion show late last term in aid of Project Moz. £250 was raised, enabling an orphaned child in Mozambique to be given shelter, food and education for a year.

The idea, borne out of recent student council meetings, saw classes from across the school designing outfits from recycled items. Children modelled their wears down the catwalk to music and lights in four different categories – paper, cardboard,

plastic and mixed textiles. The winning class was Reception, proving that younger children have some really good ideas!

A brief movie documenting the experience can be found on the school’s website www.avondaleschool.org and further information regarding Project Moz can be found on their website www.projectmoz.com where donations will be gratefully received.

Burdock Valley Players Showcase their

TalentIf an evening of singing, dancing and sketches is your kind of thing then you would have had a great time at theBurdock Valley Players’ Showcase evening of Cabaret. A group of us from another players o r g a n i z a t i o n headed toUpper Clatford to show support for our fellow thespians and

we were mightily entertained.

The amateur dramatics Showcase evening, directed by Andy Poore, did just that: it showcased a real range of talent from very young members through to older members. The highlights for me were the choir-based numbers directed and arranged by music teacher Anna Dowsett. They included a full cast version of The Lion King’s Circle of Life, and a great version of my all-time favourite song Sweet Child of Mine (Guns n’ Roses).

Anna, who also accompanied on the piano, says that while she teaches music at a special needs school and studied music at York University, she has never before run a choir. “The chance to be involved with leading the choir numbers was such a great opportunity that I just leapt at the chance. Each time we do something musical they allow me to be more adventurous with the arranging and Sweet Child of Mine is the most adventurous thing we have tried. The group worked incredibly hard on what was a difficult piece of music, especially as the majority of the group doesn’t read music,” says Anna.

The Farmyard Fandango

The choreography for many of the musical numbers was also impressive. The Farmyard Fandango was a notable rendition of Chicago’s ‘He Had it Coming’ featuring Chloe Black, Anna, Ruth Gillott, Fran Griffiths, Karen Lindley and Loren Williams. I liked the stage-bashing dance

to Michael Jackson’s They Don’t Really Care About Us by Loren and Louise Ray. The very crowd-pleasing run of Abba numbers complete with the original dance routines by Chloe Black, Andy, Hollie and Lee Poore (a real family affair!) was fun to sing along to. And there’s nothing like watching children perform – their version of Jessie J’s Price Tag – to make you smile.

A couple of the sketches were very also well performed including the Vicar of Dibley sketch, and I Won’t Send Roses with a touching rendition of the song and a convincing impression of Charlie Chaplin.

The amateur dramatics group has clearly invested in their lighting and sound with some powerful effects all managed by Ashley May and Jonny Wash.

The Burdock Valley Players has around 40-50 members and put on two shows a year, one in Easter and one in November or December. The Easter show is typically a play that runs for five performances while the end of year show is either a pantomime or a musical involving more of the younger players and running for seven performances. They rehearse every Tuesday evening for about four months and add Sunday rehearsals nearer to the performance.

Anna says, “The group has blossomed and changed over the years, with more and more younger people joining, but with many of the older members still remaining. We are a dedicated group of people who really enjoy putting on a variety of shows and plays from full plays like Hobsons Choice to comedies such as Allo Allo to the traditional Pantomime. The group is member led with an elected committee. Members can put forward ideas and the group chooses what they would like to do. This provides the opportunity for new directors to come forward with fresh ideas and gives us variety.

“The group is a lot of fun and since moving to Andover 7 years ago and joining as a way of meeting new people, I have really felt welcomed. There is a definite family atmosphere with everyone made to feel involved and valued.”

If you’re keen to see the Burdock Valley Players for yourself, mark your calendar for December when they will be performing the pantomime Beauty and the Beast across two weekends (dates to be confirmed). Or you can find out more about how to become a member on their websitewww.burdockvalleyplayers.co.uk.

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office purchased devices from auction sites such as eBay and computer fairs and out of the 200 hard drives collected 11% contained personal information.

The watchdog also stated that at least 2 of the hard drives had enough information on them to enable someone to steal the former owners’ identity.

With more and more companies encouraging us to be a paperless society most people keep more information than they realise on their computer. This includes the obvious: bank statements, utility statements etc, but also the not so obvious: cookies which may fill in your passwords for you and therefore be desirable in every day computer use but are even more desirable to someone who wants to steal your identity or have access to your bank account.

Most people assume pressing ’delete’ removes

Throwing out your old computer? Deleted all your personal information? Are you sure? asks Peter Clarke from PC PAL

the data from their hard drive but this is not the case. Emptying the recycle bin is a good first step but to really be safe there are a number of other steps that need to happen.

A good computer engineer will have a ‘personal information removal package’ which includes making a back up of your information before taking other measures such as running software that will completely remove all information on your hard drive.

If your intention is to sell your computer it can then be restored to the clean ‘as new’ state by reinstalling Windows.

If you have questions regarding this or any other computer issue or you would like to book a service for your computer then contact PC PAL on 01264 931000, email [email protected] or visit www.pcpal.co.uk

Cooking with IanIan Wooldridge, Head Chef,

at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey

with your Seasonal Produce Recipe

Braised Lettuce with Slow-Roasted

ChickenLettuce, which is a good source of vitamin a and potassium, is not just for a salad,

you’ll be amazed how tasty cooked lettuce can be! This recipe serves four.

4 large chicken legs150ml of dry white wine1 teaspoon of dried thymea little salt and pepper4 gem lettuce (or small romaine)500ml of chicken stock1 tablespoonful of olive oil

4 slices of streaky bacon (about 180-200 grams), cut widthways into strips

1 small onion, peeled and finely diced

Salt & freshly milled black pepper

olive oil

Place the chicken into a roasting dish and add the wine. Next, sprinkle over the dried thyme and season with a little salt and pepper. Cover the roasting dish with baking foil, being careful as not to touch the foil against the chicken. Roast in the oven at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4 for 2 hours. Remove the foil and return the chicken to the oven for a further 45 minutes. When cooked, set aside and cover again with foil to keep warm.

Meanwhile, thoroughly wash the gem lettuce and remove and discard any outer leaves that may not be in good condition. Place these snugly into another roasting dish and then pour in the chicken stock. Now heat the olive oil in a frying pan and then add the bacon. Fry the bacon until it becomes crispy (about 5 minutes) and remove it to a dish using a slotted spoon. To the remaining fat, add the onions. Gently

cook the onions until they become soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Mix the cooked bacon and onions together and sprinkle over the gem lettuce. Season the lettuce well with plenty of salt and pepper and drizzle over a little olive oil. Cover with foil and bake in the oven at 200˚C (180˚C fan)/Gas Mark 6 for 20 minutes. Serve immediately with the chicken and some potatoes of your choice.

Swimming with Mother in LawThis happened last Monday, a knock at the door,

An unscheduled visit, from Mother In Law “Will you come down the swimming pool, have a quick dip?

“It closes at twelve so we’ll have to be quick,” My costume is old; I’ve since put on some weight, But dismissing my fears, she just wouldn’t debate.I went in the changing rooms, feeling so frumpy,

Emerged back outside, so self-conscious and grumpy It was then that I noticed her patiently waiting,

I saw her attire; nearly needed sedating, A hat with pink flowers and leaves of green plastic,

A costume so baggy; lost all its elastic,It covered her body from head down to toe,

There was nowhere this bathing suit didn’t quite go, She was obviously dressing for aqua-marine,

‘Cos a snorkel and flippers completed the scene, I relaxed very quickly, ‘twas so plain to see,

That with her by my side, no-one’s looking at me...
