T he April edition of the Test Valley Forum Magazine is packed with useful local information and many

interesting news articles.

Please keep your letters and emails coming as we are always delighted to read your feedback. Speak to us and let us have your thoughts, be it on the magazine itself or the content of an article. The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

Since the magazine's launch in July 2008 the magazine has grown in its popularity and distribution area. At its inception we were very focused on Stockbridge as a centre for the magazine. Now we encompass a large area of the Test Valley and we have plans to expand the readership of the magazine yet further during 2012. Some of the towns and villages we plan on reaching are; Mottisfont, Braishfield, Longparish and West Tytherley, more may be added to this list as the year progresses.

Don't forget if you would like to read the magazine online simply visit our website www.testvalleyforum.co.uk and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issues' tab in the menu bar.

We are always thinking of ways to improve your local magazine and we are keen to expand our readership yet further.

We need your information urgently and we value your local input. Entries onto our Diary page, Clubs and Societies page and Useful Information page are completely free of charge.

to see local businesses being rewarded”.

16 Test Valley eateries won awards after being assessed over recent months, including:

Peter Birnie, the Inspector who assessed the eateries added “I was particularly impressed with the standard of the dishes, the quality of local produce and the attention to detail that the applicants paid to the dining experience. All our winners demonstrated a commitment to the overall customer experience, from taste and presentation to friendliness and welcome.

have now received their Hampshire Hospitality Awards. The awards showcase the best Hampshire has to offer in the hospitality sector in terms of quality of food, the use of local produce and standard of service.

Funding for the awards was under threat recently so Test Valley Borough Council, Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council and Tourism South East implemented a rescue plan to reinvigorate the awards.

Councillor Peter Giddings, the Economic Portfolio Holder at Test Valley Borough Council said "We are lucky to have so many good quality pubs and restaurants here in Test Valley. They play an important role in attracting the growing number of visitors and in stimulating a competitive local economy which is one of our corporate aims. I am very pleased that the Council was able to help rescue these awards because in these challenging economic times, it is good

These awards are an excellent way to showcase and celebrate the best of what the county has to offer."

Online subscriptions will be accepted

for the 2012/13 Test Valley Garden Waste Collection Service from Monday 5 March 2012. An ‘Early Bird’ offer is available until 2 April 2012 so any applications received by this date will be eligible for a £3 reduction on the first licence.

Current licences expire on 29 April 2012 and to continue receiving the Garden Waste Collection Service a new licence will be needed. To apply, visit the Garden Waste section (www.testvalley.gov.uk/gardenwaste) of

the Council's website. Alternatively call the Council’s Customer Services team on 01264 368000 or use the application forms distributed with this year’s Council Tax bills.

This year, the first licence will cost £22 under the Early Bird offer, or £25 outside of it. New subscribers will pay an additional £1.00 to purchase a reusable sack. These have proved to be highly durable so it is hoped that existing subscribers will continue to use the sacks issued last year. If you do need a new sack at time of renewal, there will be a charge of £1.00. Concessionary rates are available for local people who receive certain benefits.

If you do not want to use our kerbside collection service, Test Valley’s Household Waste Recycling Centres at Scott Close, Walworth Business Park in Andover and at Bunny Lane, Timsbury near Romsey will also accept garden waste.

Issue 46 APRIL www.testvalleyforum.co.uk

You’re having a laugh ...aren’t you?

Will you be having or did you have a hilarious April

fool’s day? Or did the day come and go like any other?

When was the last time you let those chuckle muscles have a really good workout? When did you laugh so much that tears were streaming down your face? Or has life got a little too serious recently?

As a therapist I often forget the powerful effects of laughter despite spending an evening at a laughter workshop (how

sad does that sound?) being deliberately guided into the state. Yet the sound of roaring laughter is so contagious isn’t it?

Laughter is the best medicine. If it were bottled the label might read: Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. The ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships,

Arguably King James I of England also proved that Legalising drugs

may not solve the problems of misuse as history shows.

Drug abuse is a constant challenge for governments. Liberal voices shout loudly about the logic of drug legalisation with more benefits than disadvantages, but I remain unconvinced. Our comfortable compromise with hypocrisy on non-medical drug use means we pretend to be doing everything possible when in reality we know the best we can do is to contain and pay the price for this containment.

The human desire to alter mood will always be with us and no amount of effort will eradicate it. Tobacco is the most lethal non-medical drug in use. History gives some insight into how a compromise 400 years ago giving it a legal status still brings a heavy price today — a price that will be even greater if we are tempted into making more dopamine stimulants legal.

In October 1611 a resident of the English colony of

A king and a 400 year old tobacco legacy

Jamestown, John Rolf, found that tobacco farming offered commercial survival for his failing colony. The Virginia Company formed in 1606 was incorporated to establish a viable colony in America, something that had previously proved too difficult. The plan was that the company would produce wine, olives and other commercial crops, but all failed.

In 1609 a relief ship found Jamestown was almost a ruin.Rolf (who later became the husband of Pocahontas) had smuggled some seeds of Nicotiana tabacum from the island of Trinidad, planted the seeds and, in doing so, more or less started the current tobacco industry. Rolf needed to smuggle his seeds from Trinidad since at that time the island was under Spanish rule and taking the seeds was a capital crime. Rolf was clearly a risk-taking entrepreneur more akin to asking forgiveness than seeking permission. Today, would he be a drug baron? At that time the moral compass of our society was organised religion. The religious view on tobacco was confusingly articulated by the old Catholic wittism: “Yes, it’s a sin to

smoke when praying but can it be wrong to say a prayer when smoking?”

Up to the early 1600s tobacco was used in the medical systems of Europe, China and India and generally did not meet religious opposition possibly because the Talmud, the Bible and the Koran omitted to deal with tobacco. Muslims exposed to tobacco in African settlements adopted it and the Catholic Church, opposed to smoking in church, had little view on smoking in secular life. Enter King James I, a man who liked a challenge.

King James loathed tobacco smoking; his famous Counterblaste much quoted to this day is perhaps the first official condemnation of tobacco but it wasn't for health reasons. The link with ill health wouldn't happen for another 350 years! No, James I believed that the tobacco was part of witchcraft and, therefore, an abomination.

Belladonna and henbane are members of the Solanaceae family of plants; so is tobacco. James was aware that witches used such herbs in rituals. Albert Hoffman, of LSD fame who wrote, ‘Plants of the gods’, reports that witches used the leaves of belladonna and henbane to compound a paste that was then smeared

onto the broomstick shafts that they then slipped between their legs and rode through their bedrooms in a hallucinating flight. Dopamine stimulation seems to have a long, weird history. A number of commentators support Hoffman’s view that witches were more sexually liberal than spiritually evil yet to the late medieval mind these were one and the same. There is a suggestion that witches were outcast lesbians and their acts of sexual freedom certainly unnerved males who sought to suppress them. Male domination is a feature of most societies down the ages and individuals who upset this order were outcast. James I, it is known, was disgusted by, and perhaps with, the sexual act, which seems to be central to his obsession with witches and his ultimate demonising of tobacco.

James I was singularly unsuccessful in his efforts but since he was pragmatic as well as obsessive he did the next best thing to eradicating tobacco: he taxed it. And here it stays to this day. Unless we are careful, the liberals are likely to lead us down this road for other dopamine stimulants, which will really become the mother of all public health problems

Laughter shifts perspectiveIt allows you to see situations in a more realistic, less threatening light. A humorous perspective creates psychological distance, which can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed. Especially helpful in the workplace!

Laughter can help you express your true feelingsDeeply felt emotions are allowed to rise to the surface.

We’re renowned as a nation for our sense of humour with every style being catered for. TV such as You’ve Been Framed gives us the chance to laugh at the expense of others which is a fair swop for the £250 they get to compensate for their distress at the time. Overall laughter can take you to a higher place where you can view the world from a more relaxed, positive, creative, joyful, and balanced perspective.

So your task should you choose to accept it is to bring

more fun and laughter into your life and those you share it with.

You could even “fake it until you make it” – studies show that faked laughter also provides the benefits mentioned above. The body can’t distinguish between fake laughter you just start doing on purpose and real laughter that comes from true humour – the physical benefits are exactly the same and the former usually leads to the later anyway!

Go on – have a giggle now!

The idea of the Festival is to screen great films in appropriate (and

often unusual) locations in and around Winchester, providing you with an immersive and unique viewing experience through which you can re-discover these classic films or perhaps even catch them for the first time - if you have seen the film before, you will never have seen it like this!

Each year, the Winchester Film Festival works in partnership with a local charity. This year,

Winchester Film Festival 2012

We are delighted that all the proceeds from the 2012 Winchester Film Festival will be donated to the Friends of the Family, so you can experience a unique cinematic event while also raising funds for a very worthy cause.

Friends of the Family is a charity for vulnerable families and their children who live in the Winchester district. It is managed by Trustees and run by professional staff and volunteers. It is a small, friendly organisation which was established in 1993, and is based at the Quaker Meeting House in the centre of Winchester.

This year the Winchester Film Festival will be held from the 8th to the 20th May. For more information visit: http://www.winchesterfilmfest.com or call: 01962 827107

very reasonable prices, and courteous friendly service from people you can trust in your homeHere's why one of the Test Valley's most trusted carpet cleaning companies is cleaning local, neighbours carpets for a fraction of the normal cost.

Dear Test Valley Forum Reader, value conscious local residents love a

great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Bee Palace

The bee palace from beepalace.com is a nesting home for solitary bees: red

mason bees (osmia rufa) and leafcutter bees (megachile centucularis).Hang the bee palace on a fence or wall in a sunny sheltered spot and

enjoy these docile bees as

they go to work pollinating your fruit and flowers! Your garden is a vital to protecting and feeding these charming bees. Growing flowers for nectar and pollen in your garden and giving them a secure and stable shelter will help slow down the general decline of bees in our gardens

and in the countryside. The bee palace was developed by Nick Edmonds and Duncan Green in Hampshire. The Beepalace is handmade using aircrete, a lightweight insulation block that combines strength and durability with excellent weather-proofing qualities. It means you can leave the bee palace in

situ throughout the year!

The bee palace is filled with nesting tubes which are perfectly

designed to provide shelter for the eggs that the bees lay

throughout the spring and summer. They seal the end of the

tube and the young emerge in the following spring. Simply

replace the nesting tubes in spring once the young have

broken through the seal of mud or leaves.

Replacement tubes are available from mush.eri@btinternet.

com. For more information or to order your beepalace

visit: beepalace.com. If you have any question regards the

beepalace then please send an email to: mush.eri@btinternet.

reports, each child creating a page for a class book to be shared with others in the library and reception area. Our nature table is growing daily at the moment as children take more notice of the world around them and bring in exciting things collected from home, from dog walks and whilst walking to school.

We are also moving to 4 classes once again from September – an exciting step

forward for all our families. Class sizes will all be under 20 with one class having just 10 children, I’d love to be in their shoes!

There are still more weeks left of Spring and we have so much to look forward to, who knows what we’ll have been up to by the next time I write?!

Spring brings Surprises at Stockbridge. We returned to School in

February and a surprise was already in store for us – an OFSTED visit! The press is awash each day it seems with changes in education, generated by Government as they begin to transform the education system. Whether you agree with their rationale or not is an entirely personal belief but it is important that the education we provide our children with has some form of regulation and standards to ensure fairness and equality for all. Nevertheless, the ‘phone call’ and preparation is still daunting!

After 2 days, our inspector pronounced our school Satisfactory but recognised the steps that have been taken since September to ensure a brighter future for the children of Stockbridge and surrounding areas. There is, he said “strong and effective leadership”,

Spring is on its way“strong and effective support” from the Governing body and a team who “work together closely” to achieve the best for children. As we work to develop a 21st century curriculum, the inspector noted “central to this is the shared commitment of all teachers to foster an ethos of challenge and high expectation founded on high self-esteem, and respect and understanding of others’ cultures and beliefs.” The full report can be viewed on our school website www.stockbridge.hants.sch.uk

Whilst OfSTED does play a vital role in monitoring Schools, we get immediate feedback and success from our pupils on a day to day basis. Our Year 5/6 children are developing their work on biodiversity at the moment and creating a ‘bug hotel’ to add to our wildlife garden. It’s exciting to see our older children interested and engaged with their learning to this degree. They are writing

The Stockbridge gallery Courcoux & Courcoux Contemporary Art

opened its latest exhibition of the work of internationally-renowned bird sculptor Guy Taplin on Saturday 31st March. The show, "Sweet Sixteen", is Taplin's 16th solo exhibition with the gallery over a period of 27 years and features new ideas as well as old favourites from the Essex-based artist.

There are wonderfully graceful egrets alongside humorous owls and boat panels with flying sanderlings and spoonbills, including one blue panel with twenty birds attached which, at eight feet long, is the largest which Guy has ever made.

Taplin, now 73, has exhibited internationally for the past 30 years and his work is in many public and private collections,

Guy Taplin returns to Courcoux & Courcoux

including that of the late Jacqueline Onassis and Lord Puttnam, the well-known film producer.

"We have clients all over the world for Guy's driftwood sculptures", comments gallery director Ian Courcoux. "There are many Taplin lookalikes which, I guess, is a form of flattery. But the secret of Guy's work is his instinct to know when to stop. Others tend to over-finish and lose the essence of the bird. Like its maker, a Taplin has the characteristics of a diamond -- wonderful quality while maintaining a certain roughness round the edges!

"Sweet Sixteen" runs until the 25th April. A 56-page catalogue is available at £10. For further information, contact the gallery 01264 810717/[email protected]

Victorian advertising set to reap a profit

Clocks, Antique Furniture & Works of Art, 3rd April 2012. In

the days before television and viral marketing, advertising was no less creative, and an interesting early example is up for auction at Woolley and Wallis on 3rd April.

Lot 630 in the Clocks, Antique Furniture & Works of Art sale is a 3-foot wide late Victorian plaster and wood model of Fernley Family Butchers of Limehouse, East London. Such models would be placed in shop windows as advertising after the shop had closed and the fresh merchandise had been removed from the window. This model depicts a smartly-dressed butcher standing proudly amidst his wares, with every imaginable cut of meat and animal carcass displayed about him. Unusually, the model also shows the premises complete with its own abattoir, where another butcher works in a blood-stained apron. This grisly

depiction served to emphasis the freshness of the produce, a feature just as important to advertisers today.

The model is believed to have been made by the son of the Fernley Family around the end of the 19th century, and has remained in the family ever since. For the past 30 years it has been exhibited in the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood (part of the Victoria & Albert Museum), and it now comes to auction at Woolley and Wallis from the descendants of the model-making butcher. The fine detail, from the animal carcasses to the lace curtains in the windows above the shop, make it highly collectable, and it goes to auction with an estimate of £4,000-5,000.

Also in this 800-lot sale of Clocks, Furniture & Works of Art is a good selection of Tribal Art from around the world. There are 178 lots of clocks, pocket watches, barometers & scientific instruments and in the furniture section there is a good private collection of amboyna wood furniture.

A fully illustrated sale catalogue is available at www.woolleyandwallis.co.uk and more information by calling 01722 339752.

influences include Irving Penn – especially his early studio work in natural light. Stephen’s current ‘Biographies in Light’ project uses ultra-low contrast flash to wrap his subjects in soft light. This technique – with Stephen’s sense of what Cartier Bresson called ‘the decisive moment’ - can create photographic portraits with the depth and subtlety of paintings. They aim to tell a sitters story, not just to record their likeness. Whether they are commissioned or for exhibition. Stephen’s portraits never use models- always real people, real faces, real professions, real passions.

“Lovely list marked by enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Lots of interesting stuff from France, especially the Rhône, Burgundy, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Loire. South Africa and South America are other strong areas, plus there are wines from Germany, New Zealand, the USA and elsewhere”, Oz Clarke, 250 Best Wines, Wine Buying Guide 2012

“Stone, Vine & Sun was one of the first of Britain’s current welcome wave of small independent wine merchants selling mainly by word of mouth and the internet. The company’s speciality is hand-picked wines retailing for £7-12 that offer really solid value and character, so I have found not a few to recommend in my current Top 100 wines being featured in the Financial Times”, Jancis Robinson, MW, 2nd December 2011, www.jancisrobinson.com

A lot of Hampshire wine drinkers don’t know there’s a multi award-winning, critically acclaimed wine merchant, with lots of distinctive wines (many organic or bio-dynamically farmed), just on their doorstep. Perhaps it’s because our wine warehouse is tucked away on a farm estate: but as we don’t have to pay high street rents, and we have space to ship in container loads of wine from all over the world, we can sell to you at extremely fair prices, and deliver to you for free.

We hope you will discover us. The best way to do so is to come and taste the wines we offer. Alternatively do look at, or indeed order from, our website; call us for advice; or come and see us in our shop.

On the 13th April 2012 World-renowned choir 'The Sixteen'

is delighted to open the 12th Choral Pilgrimage series, The Earth Resounds, in Winchester Cathedral. Featuring arguably the three most celebrated composers of the Franco-Flemish school of the Renaissance, the programme is centred around movements from the 12-part Missa Et ecce terraemotus by Brumel (the 'Earthquake Mass'). After Josquin, Brumel is considered one of the greatest composers of his generation. Lassus, writing some 30 years later, was influenced by both composers and is known to have performed in the Brumel mass.

Conductor Harry Christophers says: 'For this Choral Pilgrimage, I have decided to explore the sacred music emanating from Flanders in the 15th and 16th centuries. This extraordinary music spans 100 years of innovation and brilliance.

The Sixteen's Choral Pilgrimage 2012

Josquin, Brumel and Lassus were truly European composers, leaving their origins to work in the top establishments of Aix-en-Provence, Ferrara, Rome and Munich. Their music has a unique sonority which I believe will astound you all - from the depth of expression and fascinating texts of Josquin to the overtly decorative mass movements of Brumel's Missa Et ecce terraemotus.

Once again the Broughton Amateur Drama Group filled

the village hall with laughter, enjoyment and enthusiastic audience participation as they presented their interpretation of the panto ‘Puss in Boots’. General consensus seemed to be that this was the best ever but perhaps we in Broughton say this every year. The production combined high class acting with the clever direction of a large cast on a very small stage and the very effective management of the enthusiastic participation of a large number of children and young people. Variously acting as cats, mice, rabbits, squirrels and deer, they showed talent and self discipline as full use was made of the entire hall to facilitate the coming and goings of the large cast. Geoff Elliot the likeable Narrator kept the audience

amused as he struggled at times to get on stage to keep updating the plot. Very much a successful team effort, there were strong performances from all the major players from Sarah Royle as Jack to Islay Crispin as Princess Alice and a very convincing and multi-talented performance as Puss in Boots from Nicola Mawhinney. Much laughter came from the excellent performances by Tim Evans as Dame Hettie Quette and Garry Collins as Lord Roger de Broughton, revelling yet again as the baddie of the piece. Lord Roger was very well supported by his well acted hopeless crew of Nosmo King [Nigel Ottley] and Nopar King [Dom McKay]. Tony Lydeard and Carole Collins successfully played the ineffectual King Herbert and his wife Queen Mildred. The audience enjoyed the fitness session when the

King’s personal trainer played by Kevin Taylor tried unsuccessfully to get him into good physical shape. With excellent cameo performances from Mike Moore and Nick Jones, the entertainment moved steadily forward to its eventual happy ending with lots of quick humour and well performed dancing and singing. The back stage team and costume designers deserve a special mention in this terrific production. The

scenery was first class and the costumes were superb, with great attention to detail throughout. The make up of so many varied characters was of the highest order. In the beautifully produced programme the Director, Linda Cardigan referred to working with a very special team both on stage and behind the scenes. Her words and her skills were reflected throughout as audiences were treated to a pantomime to remember. Hobson

It’s now widely known that singing is beneficial to your health and gives you

the ‘feel good factor’. It has a positive effect on the mind, body and soul; when you sing the body releases endorphins which help reduce stress and lift the spirit.

At Sing for Fun you can get all the benefits of singing in a friendly, fun environment. No experience is necessary only enthusiasm. You will receive tips on vocal technique, tuning and projection. No one has to sing by themselves and the emphasis is placed on the overall sound with everyone blending together in harmony. Sing for Fun’s friendly tutor, Jane Cole, will ensure that even the most inexperienced singer gets the best out of their voice over the 10 week sessions.

Ever wondered what singing can do for you?

Various genres are covered including pop, musicals and a-capella (singing unaccompanied).

Come and join us and see what singing can do for you. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you join Sing for Fun. Sing for Fun sessions are for anyone over the age of 21 who wishes they could sing. They run every Wednesday from 7.30pm - 9.30pm at St John The Baptist Church Hall, Alexandra Road, Andover. A new 10 week term starts on Wednesday 25th April.

Try before you buy – you are welcome to come along and join in for a session to see what Sing for Fun is all about. For more information please visit www.singforfun.co.uk or call 08455 191391.

Let's rock!Another sojourn to the Capital City for the family

Pagan. This time the happy collision of the niece’s 16th birthday and a trip to the O2 to see Snow Patrol, heralded an overnight stay at the

Premier Inn, (we know how to live), at Borough Market.

Now one of the many problems with being an indecisive soul was the inability, at the time, to make a decision regarding a second child. The years rolled by as I grappled with should we shouldn’t we conundrum resulting in a large gap between Stars II & I. Once in their 20s the gap will barely be apparent but at present, all too often, we have to leave Star II at home with a sitter due to issues of age.

But no more! Enough of this, I thought, we are not complete when one is missing; from now on Star II will partake of all Pagan outings – ready or not! And so it was that we, along with the Immaculate In- laws, found ourselves ‘back stage’ at the O2.

At this point I would love to be able to say, at the very least, that I have a friend whose cousin’s brother is the guitarist in Snow Patrol- hence the back stage pass. But no; if you have Sky then you simply apply online for your ‘feel like a star for the night’ experience and join the throng. It’s red carpet all the way to the dimly lit bar, all rather jolly and the kids thought it was heaven on a stick.

Having donned crampons and climbed to our seats way up in the gods we acclimatized both to the altitude and decibels. Snow Patrol brilliantly belted out hit after hit; Star I, a veteran of such occasions, was in fine form as was The Husband. Much to my relief Star II was fine about the noise levels and was up dancing and singing to the known tunes, but then came a rather curious question,“Mum when will they sing ‘Paradise’ it’s my favourite.”I gently explained, “Not until June when we go to see Cold Play”.Some further explanation of bands and their back catalogues may be required.

Then having jigged around for an hour or so came the dreaded,“How much longer Mum? How many more songs?”

“Oh just two or three”. I said reassuringly, didn’t mention the encore.

No sooner had we heard “Thank you London and goodnight!” than we found ourselves back stage once more. Far from whining about going home, Star II found a second wind and a lengthy game of pool ensued.

Eventually we found our way back onto the Jubilee Line only to be faced with huge crowds due to the lack of trains. Mutterings about transport logistics and the Olympics reverberated around the platform, and then in scenes reminiscent of Tokyo in rush hour we were herded onto the train. The hour was late, a speedy journey back to Southwark was the priority, but no, the train remained resolutely static.

Star II, being limited in stature compared to our fellow travellers, fared rather well in such cramped conditions. No invasion of personal space, bad breath or body odour to contend with but instead the tantalizingly tempting red of the passenger alarm positioned at the ideal height. This fact was not lost on some of the passengers whose glares were diverted downward as a guard invited us all to get off the train due to the passenger alarm being pressed in one of the carriages. Star II was the prime suspect; guilty it would seem, until proven innocent, not helped by the continuous and loud insistence,“Mum it wasn’t ME!”Like any good mother…well I had my doubts, but when the alarm was turned off two carriages down, I felt an inner blend of piousness and relief.

It was the not until the small wee hours that we collapsed into the comfort of our beds; the Husband and I could happily have got Lenny Henry in between us, (had we had the mind….), such was the vastness of the double bed. Stars I and II slept soundly, despite the effects of mild concert induced tinnitus, and apart from a slight altercation with London Underground it had all gone rather well.

But then there’s always next time...Sandra Pagan

The shingled roof of the Pool House squats on the east wall like a

Samurai helmet and a rising sun behind warms the wings of a pair of passage Short Eared Owls hunting earnestly in the field next door. There is something therapeutic and cathartic about tidying up for the spring, out with the old and in with the new. Raking out dead leaves, cutting back tightly the stubs of herbaceous stems, pricking over the soil, removing early weeds and dressing the borders with compost, if you have it. In the Grass Border, as the purple Callicarpa berries pale, I have started the annual spring haircut. Having played with the frost and low light of early spring to wonderful effect, wispy brown grass stems and seed heads from last year can be cut back now with a serrated kitchen knife or secateurs, to form neat bristly domes, with any ragged evergreen specimens...Deschampsia caespitosa, Stipa gigantea, or proud low flat topped mohawks with herbaceous varieties. Along the lawn edge drifts the soft scent of Prunus Cerasifera ‘Nigra’ filling the gap being left by the heavier and all pervasive scent of the Himalayan Sarcococca confusa, which has charmed us all since Christmas. Although the smell in my nostrils is sweet, the taste in my mouth is acrid, metallic, like blood. Even at a hundred yards away, on a still day, I can taste the particles of ferrous sulphate from the

First of the Mohicansmoss killer as Kate strides the lawn, North to South, spreading medicinal sand in tight arced patterns like filings on paper, as if there were a great magnet just beneath the green.A little rain is forecast which will wash in the moss-toxic formula and prevent the turf from turning a dull black, and Iron (Fe), being a component of chlorophyll, will green the lawns. After a quick scarify to remove any dead moss, the first cut will be next week. This year in particular, some of these bright days in March have been the most peerless jewels in which to be out in a garden makes complete sense. A single line paraphrases hauntingly in my head that perhaps…. ‘ The nearer we grow toward death, the louder the sun blooms’ (DT) Julian Backwell - Head Gardener at Dean House Kilmeston www.deanhousegardens.co.uk

Spanners is approaching its first year as

a business... yet the popular mechanical

couple Kim and Paul have been on

the 'spanners' so to speak since their teens.

Kim began her career doing work experience

at Winchester Motor Company (VW/AUDI

dealership) in 1985. After a year she was offered

an apprenticeship with VW/Audi which she

embraced, and then continued to work there

for eight years. Since then she has worked

hard in a 'male' dominated career with a list

of achievements to her name. Kim worked for

independent garages throughout Hampshire

and also for Hendy Ford where she was awarded

Technician of the Year in 19??. She progressed to

become workshop foreman/woman and workshop

controller. Seven years ago Kim was involved with

establishing another popular local garage. It was

just over year ago that Kim and Paul decided

to venture out to set up their own independent

garage, Spanners! Ironically named after there

four year old cocker spaniel Spanner.

Every trade has a nickname: in the electrical field

you are Sparkies, in the carpentry field you are

Chippy's; Kim and Paul are affectionately known

as Spanners...

Kim and Paul met in 1995 at Evans Halshaw

Ford, Winchester. Paul left school joining the Ford

dealership at 16 years of age. Since then Paul has

built an impressive career and technical record

achieving Ford Master Technician and Accredited

Status. These accolades are shown in the wealth

of mechanical knowledge that Paul has.

'We pride ourselves on our knowledge coupled with a friendly, honest and professional service'

'We like to keep our customers well informed and

our FREE collect and deliver service has proved

very popular locally'. Spanners has grown quickly

and its reputation for impeccable customer

service has built up a loyal following.
