Concurrent measurements The 8960 Series 10 wireless com-munications test set uses AgilentTechnologies’ reduced instructionparallel processing (RIPP) archi-tecture, which allows the test setto run concurrent measurementsusing independent hardware andfirmware. In addition to enablingfaster measurements, the RIPParchitecture greatly simplifiesremote programming of complex,parallel measurements.

You can launch a series of transmitter and receiver measure-ments to be executed simultane-ously. Because the test set hasparallel hardware and an operatingsystem that allows concurrentprocesses, the total test time will

be significantly shorter than if thesame tests were run sequentially.Simultaneous measurements donot prevent you from retrievingthe results of each measurementas it is completed.

Measurement speedMeasurement speed is improvedwith the 8960 Series 10. Forexample, using the test set withthe GSM mobile test application,a GSM phase-error measurement(typical five-burst average),which takes five seconds to runon a previous-generation test set,now takes only 150 milliseconds.An output RF spectrum measure-ment, which also requires fiveseconds on a previous-generationtest set, takes only 200 millisec-onds. Transmitter and receivermeasurements can be made concurrently, reducing test timeeven further.

Easy to program and controlThe test set’s remote user interface(RUI) has been designed to allowthe use of high-level tests to launchmeasurements and retrieve results.With high-level tests, complexmeasurement processing algo-rithms are built into the test setand executed internally, reducingthe bus traffic and increasingoverall measurement throughput.

Because the RUI takes fewer linesof code, integrating the test setinto your manufacturing environ-ment is greatly simplified. Yourprogrammers will find it mucheasier to write, maintain, andupgrade the test code with fewerlines required.

An additional benefit of the 8960Series 10’s efficient RUI is theprogrammable measurement timeout. Test engineers no longer needto worry about a faulty phonehanging up the test set.Programmable time out allows

overall control of each measure-ment procedure to ensure that afaulty phone does not halt thetest program.

In the GSM measurement examplebelow, only five lines of code arerequired for a program that canmeasure and print transmit power(TXP) and phase and frequencyerror (PFER). Measurement initiation and retrieval takes onlythree lines of code (20–40) andwill execute in 50 milliseconds.

The results captured in this simpleprogram include an integrityvalue for each of the two measure-ments, transmit power, phaseerror, peak phase error, andworst-case frequency error. Thesame program on a similar testset would take at least 15 lines of code and would not includemeasurement integrity.

Components of the platformThe 8960 Series 10 hardwareplatform consists of modules forRF and base-band measurements,digital signal processing, andcomputing. The hardware set isbased on standard components,so that the platform can incorpo-rate the latest technologies andcan be upgraded easily as newtechnologies evolve.

With open hardware slots and aninternal VME bus, the test set isready to accept future technologyenhancements with test applica-tion and/or hardware additions.

All test applications can bestored on the test set's internalhard drive. New test applicationscan be downloaded into the testset, saved, and recalled easily soyou can make quick format andconfiguration changes with mini-mal disruption to production lines.

GPRS functionality now includescoding schemes CS1 throughCS4. Multi-slot configurations ofup to four contiguous downlinktime slots and up to two contigu-ous uplink time slots allow you tocharacterize the performance ofa GPRS mobile phone over realisticconditions. The lab application provides a summary of logged messageinformation that includes theprotocol path, message name,message direction (uplink ordownlink), and time stamps(elapsed and system). It also provides the detail of loggedmessage information, includingthe complete protocol log stream.

Add AMPS/136 mobile test capabilityThe E1961A AMPS/136 mobiletest application performs fastanalog and digital mobile-phonetests for the EIA/TIA-136 specifi-cations. Used with the 8960Series 10 Model E5515B or C, ittests new 136-compliant mobilephones in all three bands of operation—analog 800 MHz, digital 800 MHz, and digital 1900 MHz—and all call-processingfunctions, including handoffsbetween bands and modes.

Test the latest multi-format“world” phonesWith the new E1985A GSM_AMPS/136_GPRS mobile test applicationfor fast switching, the 8960Series 10 is the ideal solution fortesting multiple-format worldphones. In less than two seconds,you can switch between theseradio formats—a process thattook a minute and a half before.

Fast switching reduces setup timeand helps increase throughput onthe production line. Each timethe software switches betweenformats, it does a partial preset,so that instrument states, includingchannel number and power level,are preserved. That means whenyou switch back to a previouslyused format, you will be able tocontinue testing without havingto stop and reset the measurementparameters.

In addition, GPIB commandscan be sent to the radio formatthat is idle while testing theactive format, so that you will beready to test every time youmake a switch.

System design and componentsInstruments such as the 8960Series 10 test set capitalize onour knowledge of test, so thatyou can be sure of getting theright solution.

Software is flexible and comprehensive, with an easy-to-configure user interface. It includesa full-featured test executive, aneasy-to-use test developmentenvironment with libraries ofmeasurement and instrument-control routines, and an automatedRF path characterization tool.The N4051A/52A works with theAgilent E6560A wireless testmanager, which combines simpleand complete menu-driven testplans, test executive functionality,and a user-friendly test develop-ment environment. Test applica-tions for the 8960 test set at theheart of the system support allmajor 2G and 3G wireless phone protocols.

Fixtures such as the new E8421Awireless test fixture with change-able nests can be integrated into the system to allow testingof appliances of varying form factors. The test fixture providesRF isolation to protect the test environment, manual or automaticconnection to the appliance undertest, RF paths, acoustic testing,and limited button pushing

Racking includes integration of all instruments and cabling intoa rack carefully designed to pro-vide cooling, power, ergonomics,safety, and mechanical stability.

System hardware also includespower supplies, industrial PC,display, keyboard, and modularinterconnect panel. The N4051A/52A can be configured with optionsfor power, rack size, instrumentset, multiplexer, digital multimeter,and digital I/O.
