September 11, 2001• On the morning of 9/11, our world changed• Terrorists hijacked four airplanes
9/11 Attacks:9/11 Attacks:
Terrorist attacks on World Trade
Center in NY and the
Pentagon in D.C.
• They flew 2 of them into 2 of the world’s tallest buildings at the World Trade Center in New York City
Before 9/11 After 9/11On 9/11
Another plane smashed into the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C.
• Passengers on the 4th plane fought with the terrorists and it crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
Response to 9/11
• President George W. Bush decided that America would fight back.
• He committed to a War on Terrorism in response to the events of September 11
• Besides finding the people responsible for the attack, he wanted to prevent terrorist activities all over the world.

The enemy
• America’s first step was to find Osama bin Osama bin LadenLaden: terrorist believed to have planned the 9/11 attack
• The U.S. military moved into Afghanistan to look for him and for members of his terrorist group , Al-QaedaAl-Qaeda: international organization of terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks
• The military destroyed many terrorist camps there but did not capture bin Laden.
• Then, the War on Terrorism moved into Iraq.• The Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, was
suspected of helping terrorists.• He also refused to fully cooperate with the UN
when they wanted to send inspectors to Iraq to look for powerful weapons.
• The U.S. government was afraid he would give those weapons to terrorists.
• Troops from the U.S. and other nations entered Iraq in March 2003.
• The Iraqi government fell quickly and Hussein was captured in Dec. 2003
• Iraq was now free from a brutal dictator!• Many soldiers remained in Iraq to help establish
a new democratic government.
