TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT
What is Terminology Management?
• Terminology Management supports the creation, usage and maintenance of terminology. It allows the user to:
• Automatically reference and search a terminology database for approved terminology during source content creation
• Automatically reference and search a terminology database for approved terminology translations during a translation project
• Automatic display of the terms in the translation memory interface • Insertion of the terms through the use of shortcut keys
• Verify (in single or batch mode) that approved source/target terms have been used consistently
• In source and translated documentation
• Add new terminology entries to the terminology database

Why Terminology?
Intelligible Precise
Consistent (Synonyms)
Unambiguous (Homonyms)
And how?
Identical “Concepts” belong together and should be defined
Different “Concepts” should be separated and defined
Terminology and Content
• Readability, user friendly information
• Readability of English as a foreign language
• Better to translate, higher TM matches
• Indispensable with Single Source Publishing – Modular building blocks – No more “document” control – Many authors – Increases re-usability
Terminology Costs
• Terminology costs are normally hidden – Many people in the company are already doing
terminology work – But the cost is hidden
• The most expensive terminology management is no terminology management
• So how can we make it more efficient?

Competitive Analysis
Which application is the biggest competitor of SDL MultiTerm?
Microsoft Excel
SDL MultiTerm Vs Microsoft Excel
Term lists in Microsoft Excel are not linguistically powerful:
• The term list is not automatically integrated into the authoring process – The author/translator must manually search for a term in the term list
What if they spell the term incorrectly?
What if there are word forms for the term?
• The linear way of working makes it harder to read term entries that are very detailed – No hierarchy of terms and associated contextual data
• Excel does not provide the same level of management for multimedia, website links and cross-references
• Cannot search for duplicate terms when adding new term entries
• Cannot automatically check that users have always used approved terminology
• No way to easily add new terms to the list and make them available to all users
SDL MultiTerm Vs Microsoft Excel
One of the greatest challenges is the method of access:
• Microsoft Excel does not allow secure and centralized control
– Cannot share terms without physically moving them from one place to another (perhaps via email), or by copying and pasting
– Manual process of maintaining the different versions for all users
• If you send the term list in Microsoft Excel, you have to send the whole file
– Cannot control what people see or how much access they have
• No built-in audit tracking, administrative security, historic workflow management or user rights management
• Cannot extract terms directly to Microsoft Excel from legacy documents
