Rippa Rugby seemed to be the dominant sport around the Waikato region this Term. There were qualifying competitions held in Whangamata, Thames, Taupo, Paeroa & Hamilton. These were followed by Thames Valley & King Country Finals Days.
The weather played its part for most of the Rippa Rugby days. I witnessed some stunning days in Taupo. These days take a lot of planning and organising as well as volunteers. A big thank you to the secondary schools who provided KiwiSport Assistants to volunteer their time to referee at these competitions. These schools included; Thames High School, Mercury Bay Area School, Whangamata Area School & Taupo-Nui-A-Tia.
All of these competitions were leading into the Tri-angular Tournament held on 29th of June in Hamilton. Well done to the teams who qualified from Thames Valley, Waikato & King Country Competitions. The triangular tournament is run by the Waikato Rugby Union and is a qualifying event for the NZ National Rippa Rugby Championships in Wellington.
Results from the tournament saw Norton School take on Tongariro School in the Yr 5/6 final, with Nawton winning 7-5. In the Yr 7/8 final it was Maeroa Intermediate who proved too strong for Piopio taking the win 13-0. Good luck to the teams playing in Wellington and thank you to the student referees from HBHS .
Part way through this term we celebrated
National Volunteer Week from 17th—23rd
of June. It was a great way of thanking all of
the KiwiSport Leaders and recognising all the
hardwork that they do.
We teamed up with Sport Waikato to profile
some of the current KiwiSport Leaders who
have completed their 45hrs of volunteering.
These students are; Matthew McHugh
(Cambridge High), Ella Higgins (Cambridge
High), Brandyn Were (St Johns), Corban Hall
(St Johns) and Jaxson Fisher (St Johns).
Together these 5 students have collectively
completed just under 1000 hrs of
volunteering from 2017-18. These KiwiSport
Leaders are an example of the many selfless
student volunteers we have that continue to
help make sport happen within the Waikato.
Thank you for all your hard work, you are all
amazing!
Term 2 we profile Yr 13 Haurkai Plains student Talia Siddens. Talia has been on the KiwiSport Community Leadership Programme since 2017 and is doing some really amazing things. Hear about some of her experiences in Volunteering.
What do you think you gained from being involved in the KiwiSport Leadership Programme?
I think that being a KiwiSport leader means that I am able to document my volunteering and is a good way for students to be rewarded, who usually might slip under the radar. I also enjoy reading and hearing about others within the community and in my school who are also volunteering.
What is the most enjoyable role you have held as a volunteer? What did this role involve? I really have loved organising Tiny Sticks within my community. This is hockey for preschool aged kids to come along and give hockey a go. Myself and a couple of my friends decided to start the project as part of a health assessment and from there I took on organising it. I have been able to organise other willing volunteers to help run the sessions, I have received funding for equipment and have even had some Blacksticks come and take pictures with the kids. Now we are getting 10-15 kids turning up to the sessions. It makes me feel good to know that I was able to give an opportunity to these kids to get out and get active.
Would you recommend volunteering/being a volunteer to other young people? I would definitely recommend volunteering to others. It is so rewarding and i find that it is a great way to meet new people and get out of my comfort zone. I find that it is way better to be out helping someone else rather than sitting at home on social media.
How have you shown leadership at school? This year I am the Academic leader at Hauraki Plains College. As part of this we have implemented a Peer tutoring system into our school. I tutor several students myself and have found that it has been super rewarding when the people who I tutor pass a maths test or get an excellence in a social studies paper. I have also taken the role of the coach of the 2nd XI girls hockey team. This is the first time I have coached secondary aged kids (usually I coach kids aged 7-10) so this has been a different experience for me, but our team is improving each week.
What advice would you give to a new KiwiSport Leader? Take every opportunity that comes your way. Although sometimes I feel like I have made to many commitments I am usually able to juggle my school work, volunteering sport and social life. But one thing to note is that it's totally okay to ask others if they can lend you are hand.
The annual Youth Leading Sport event was held on
Wednesday 9th of May at the FMG Stadium in
Hamilton. This year we trialled a new venue as we
believed it tide in better with the purpose of the day.
The students got a real buzz from being in a
corporate lounge and looking out over the field. For
many of them this will be a once in a lifetime
opportunity to ever be in a corporate lounge and see
this view of the stadium.
This day is targeted at students who are sports
leaders, in sports councils within their schools,
coaches, captains or officials. The focus of the day is
to educate students and develop their knowledge in
communication, the importance of volunteering and
managing side-line behaviour.
In the morning the students were treated to a guest
speaker. NZ sevens rugby player Isaac Te Tamaki
started off the day chatting to the students about
relatable topics such as; his leadership in sport, the
challenges he has faced, importance of giving back,
impacts of social media and his journey since leaving
school. The students then worked through the 3
workshops of communication, the importance of
volunteering and managing side-line behaviour.
During the afternoon session it was great to see how
the students handled the pressure situations of being
a leader, coach and/or official and putting into
practice things they had learnt that morning. Overall
it was a positive day for the students and it was great
to see new schools attending this year.
The Cambridge Rural & Town Schools Winter Sports Days were held on Friday 22nd & 27th of June. Another great turn out of Yr 5-8 students keen to get involved and have some fun playing sport, despite the cold and frosty start.
The students competed in a range of different sports, these included; Volleyball, Touch down Netball, Football, Touch & Ki-O-Rahi.
The students got split into teams which made up a mixture of different schools in the hope that they meet new people and have fun getting to know and working with other students.
These days would not have been able to go ahead without the help of Cambridge High Schools Yr 10 Sports Science Classes. A big thank you to these KiwiSport Leaders & Assistants
for volunteering your time and working so well with the students. It was great to see the high school students getting involved and joining in the sports with the younger students.

It was great to see so many children wanting to get involved and try the different sports on offer. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the greatest, however the younger students still had an awesome time getting involved with; Basketball, Netball, Lacrosse, Squash,
Volleyball, Golf and Indoor Bowls. Thank you to Jamie-Lyn van Niekerk, Courtenay Baker, Nesha (Cambridge High), Dreshawn Hape-Edwards (TA College) and Gus Foy (Cambridge Middle) for assisting with the holiday programme. Your help was much appreciated!
