PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
End of Term 3
It has been an extremely busy term for all
students and staff. I would like to congratulate the
majority of students for the positive way they have
engaged in their learning throughout the term. I
hope all students have a relaxing and enjoyable
break, making sure they are refreshed ready for a
busy Term 4.
Leading up to the end of this term, teachers have
sent letters home stating if students are not
achieving at the level expected of them. It will
inform them if they have not demonstrated the
required work ethic or if their attendance has
impeded their result for a particular subject. If you do not receive a letter about your child, you
can assume that they are tracking at the level
expected. We believe it is too late to notify
parents about a slip in work ethic if we leave it
until the end of the year.

Mobile Phones
Last week, we sent home a letter with students outlining our Acceptable Use Policy for Mobile
Devices. We wanted to make sure parents and students were aware that if a student was asked to hand
their mobile device to a staff member and refused, the student would not be permitted to bring their device
to school for the rest of the year. Since the letter went home, we have not had one incident where a
student has refused to hand their phone over and we have a small number of situations where there has
been inappropriate use or use without the teacher’s permission. Thank you so much for the wonderful
support we receive from parents. If you need to re-familiarise yourself with our Acceptable Use Policy for
Mobile Devices, please see the next page.
150 years of Public Education
Last night, the Tasmanian Education Department Crescendo Choir, which consists of three of our students
(Fabian Spratt, Chelsey Geddes and Olivia Gow), performed at the Paranaple Convention Centre in
Devonport. The centerpiece of the evening was a choir song written and performed to celebrate 150 years
of public education in Tasmania, led by composer and conductor, Paul Jarman.
The event at the Paranaple Centre was the swansong of the Department's year of celebrating 150 years of
public education. Guests had the opportunity to meet with public education ambassadors, view our 150
Years exhibition which has travelled all over the state during the last 12 months and celebrate how far we
have come. Then. Now. Beyond.
Numeracy Award
As part of the Numeracy Leaders Team, Jamie Smith and I were privileged and excited to be a part of the
Education Department’s Together We Inspire Awards evening in Hobart last Thursday night. We were
even more excited to be presented with the Numeracy Champions Award by Jeremy Rockliff. We won this
award as part of the Numeracy Leaders Team that works across the Latrobe Kentish Cluster. This award
has been in recognition of our collective belief that we, as leaders and teachers, have greater impact on
student numeracy learning outcomes by working together to gain consistent practices across the
cluster. We believe that we are teaching what matters most in the best way possible. With guidance from
the Principal team and having a shared belief that all children across the cluster are our children, the
Numeracy Leaders Team has focused on what our children know and what they need to know, and how
teachers are teaching that in the most effective way. We meet regularly to develop plans, investigate data,
and to develop and provide high quality professional learning opportunities for all our teachers across the
cluster. At Latrobe High, we are definitely noticing the growth and engagement of all our students in
numeracy lessons. Not only are our students making significant gains in Maths but they also enjoy doing it.
Well done to all our teachers and our students. A huge congratulations to Jamie Smith and previously Josh
Moore, for being the Latrobe High Leaders behind this significant project. Thank you to all our teachers for
being their best so that children can be their best. Together we do achieve more.

GRADE 7 REPORT
It’s been a very busy term for all grade 7 students across all subject areas. In their PI 5 class, the students have
completed their ‘Multiplicative Thinking’ program and final test. With the task of marking all of the student test
papers underway, there appears to have been some significant improvements across the grade.
At the start of Term 3, all grade 7 students started a new maths program called Maths Pathway. This new
approach to teaching maths has seen many students achieve over one year’s growth in just a single term.
There has also been some high quality work produced across English and HASS classes during Term 3. The
focus of the content and tasks has been centred around place and liveability, and students have been applying
these skills to their independent novel study. These activities have allowed students to flex their creative
muscles as well as their exhibiting their comprehensive understanding of the text they have read. You can see
some examples of student work below.
Students have been dissecting various specimens during their recent Science classes. The owl vomit has been
something of interest, albeit disgusting some of our grade 7’s!
We have a lot to look forward to in Term 4. As well as continuing with work in our basics classes and personal
interest classes, the final term of school also features the Athletics Carnival. Students will begin training for the events featured in the carnival during PE lessons over the coming weeks.

GRADE 8 REPORT
For the past ten weeks, students in Grade 8 have immersed themselves in a literary journey, discovering the
wonderful world of poetry. Although not everyone’s cup of tea, students were engaged learning about and
experimenting with a variety of poetic techniques and language features, as well refining their analytical skills
by analysing songs and poems. Students have had to explain their thinking in regards to the success of
techniques used by authors as well as unpacking the underlying themes of the songs and poems they were
exposed to. Below are some fantastic examples of what the students have produced in the last few weeks of
this unit.
I am incredibly proud of the way the Grade 8 cohort have handled themselves, displaying all four of our
school values consistently throughout one of the more difficult terms due to the cold weather and lack of
extra-curricular interruptions. The Grade 8 team wishes all students and their families a safe and enjoyable
break. We hope you have a good dose of Vitamin D from this slowly improving Spring weather, and come
back refreshed for a jam-packed Term 4!
If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child please do not hesitate to contact Savahn Overall at
school on 6426 1061 or by email [email protected]

GRADE 9 REPORT
Term 3 has come to an end and I think everyone is ready for a break. The days are now getting longer and I
encourage everyone to make the most of the good weather. Lock those phones away and head outside. It is
amazing how much better some regular exercise and sunlight can make you feel. As always, my message to the
group is think positive. Positive relationships are one of our school values that we will continue to try and instil
in all of you. This definitely does not mean that we are striving to have everyone becoming best buddies. It
means that we will expect everyone to be respectful, appreciate and accept everyone’s differences, and under
no circumstances do we intentionally cause conflict or divide. Term 4 will see senior staff being very vigilant in
identifying any situation that is causing conflict and these students will be dealt with accordingly.
RECOGNISING GREAT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
The Department of Education recognises student achievement and has invited Fabian
to attend the 2019 Department of Education Student Awards. The Department of
Education Student Awards recognise achievement and the values of aspiration and
growth. This includes: displaying a culture of high expectations and high achievement;
improving by always learning and finding better ways to do things. Eligible students for this award will come from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Department of Education will be
hosting a regional celebratory event to recognise student achievement in these areas.
The presentation ceremony is to be held on Monday 21 October at Burnie High
School. Also, a bit more Fabian news; Fabian has just won the Dell Luck Memorial
Trophy for the most promising soloist 18 years and under. He was also part of the LFB
Junior Band that are now 'C Grade' Junior State Champions after last weekend's state
championships held in Launceston. Please enjoy the photo taken of him from the
Eisteddfod. Keep up the exceptional standard Fabian!!
MORE GREAT WORK
Within our school community, Charlotte Woods and Ava Wyllie have created the
ECO Team. This student lead initiative involves creating and coordinating a variety of
programs such as the Paper Recycling Program. The current project is working
towards opening a Pop-up-shop, that will be opening up in Term 4. The team has also
participated in Climate Strikes and has raised awareness for the issue. It is great to see
two young and proactive students who really care for our future and the environment
that we live in. Well done girls!
LEADERSHIP
2020 holds many opportunities for students to have a role in some form of leadership. Firstly, there is the 2020
Latrobe High Leadership team, where thirty nine students have nominated themselves. Their nomination form
will be put up for the student body to read and get to know the candidate that little bit more. They will go
through the process of speeches and then voting will decide who will represent the team. Students who make
the team will work with Mrs Heazlewood throughout the year and will develop their leadership skills in a variety
of ways. School House Captains are another opportunity to be in a leadership role. School House Captains have
an important role to support the HPE team to organise and coordinate School Carnivals and sporting events.
This important role is chosen by the HPE team. If these two opportunities are not your cup of tea, students also
have the opportunity to become Support Leaders. Coordinated by Mrs Forbes and Mr Oliver, the role of the
Support Leader is to assist the students. These roles are divided into Literacy Leaders, Numeracy Leaders,
Learning for Life Leaders and Eco leaders. For more information about these roles, please see Mrs Forbes and
Mr Oliver. I encourage all students to consider these opportunities.

2020 GRADE 7 ENROLMENT FORM
GIRLS IN PARLIAMENT DAY
On Wednesday 18 September Aaliah, Tara and Charlotte departed school at 6am with Ulverstone
Secondary College to start our journey to Parliament House, Hobart. The day consisted of a tour of
Parliament House, a role-play of a sit down meeting between a member of parliament and member of the
community to address a situation. The last rotation, by far the best, was a role play on a pretend bill being
passed onto the Upper House. Before returning home we had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A with
female parliamentarians. Overall this experience was an interesting and informative event that we have taken
so much from.

2019 GRADE 10 DINNER
The 2019 Grade 10 Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 December. The Farewell Assembly will also be
held on Thursday 19 December from approximately 9am - 11am. We ask that students do not make any
appointments until after 11:30am. The assembly is compulsory, if students do not attend the assembly
they will not be permitted to attend the Grade 10 Dinner.
LEVIES
Shortly, Latrobe High will be setting the levies for the 2020 school year. We are now at the end of term
three and would appreciate your attention to any levies that are still to be paid to the school for
2019. Please note that the school offers a payment plan that enables the levies to be paid off over a
period of time. This is tailored to each family’s circumstances and can be as small as $20 per
fortnight. Please contact the school with your proposed payment plan so we may formalise the
agreement. It’s important to note that this will avoid the debt being monitored by the Department of
Education’s Finance Services.
