School Uniform

We know that the wearing of school uniform builds pride in the school. We have an expectation that

students arrive to school in full school uniform and leave school at the end of the day in full school

uniform, even if their last lesson of the day is PE. Thank you to all parents and carers for providing

students with the appropriate school uniform and enhancing our reputation in the community.

Red Faces Assembly

Our student leaders are busy planning for our Red Faces Assembly, which will take place during blocks

two and three on Thursday 5 September, starting at 10:45am. I know students and teachers are looking

forward to viewing the many acts. We encourage parents and community members to attend and enjoy

Red Faces with us.

2019 Satisfaction Survey

The 2019 Satisfaction Survey parent letters contained the following sentence in error:

“All feedback goes to the school principal in a report with no individuals identified, and with all comments exactly

as worded”.

This sentence should not have been included as the 2019 Satisfaction Survey does not contain an option

for additional comments and therefore principals will not receive a report of collated comments. Thank

you to all families who have completed the survey.

2019 GRADE 10 DINNER

The 2019 Grade 10 Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 December. The Farewell Assembly

will also be held on Thursday 19 December from approximately 9am - 11am. We ask that

students do not make any appointments until after 11:30am. The assembly is

compulsory, if students do not attend the assembly they will not be permitted to attend

the Grade 10 Dinner.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

LEVIES

Shortly, Latrobe High will be setting the levies for the 2020 school year. We are now approaching the

end of term three and would appreciate your attention to any levies that are still to be paid to the school

for 2019. Please note that the school offers a payment plan that enables the levies to be paid off over a

period of time. This is tailored to each family’s circumstances and can be as small as $20 per

fortnight. Please contact the school with your proposed payment plan so we may formalise the

agreement. It’s important to note that this will avoid the debt being monitored by the Department of

Education’s Finance Services.

GRADE 8 REPORT

As we cross the half way mark of Term 3, Grade 8 students have been experimenting with their creative

sides, as well as engaging in the hands on subjects offered here at Latrobe High School. Students have

produced some phenomenal pieces of art, poetry, storyboards and more in both basics and personal

interest classes this term. It would be remiss of me if their creative efforts were not showcased to the

rest of the school as well as our school community. Please see below for some of the outstanding work

being produced by Grade 8 students.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child please do not hesitate to contact Savahn Overall

GRADE 10 DON TASTER DAY

Next Tuesday 3 September, all Grade 10 students will be attending a day at Don College. Students are

expected to arrive between 8:15am and 8.45am. Their day will finish at 3:10pm. Students will need to arrange

their own transport to and from the college. It is recommended that they try to catch a bus or take transport

that they would be using next year. Please contact Merseylink for bus details if needed on 6427 7626. Grade

10 students are not required to wear uniform on the day.

Don Taster Day is a unique opportunity for students to have a taste of a day at college and gain valuable

information about the courses they will choose later this year, in preparation for their 2020 Grade 11

enrolment. There will be a BBQ lunch available, however students can also bring or buy food/drink from the

school canteen.

When students arrive they will be given a timetable and are expected to attend all classes during the day. Each

student’s timetable will run according to the choices that they have made. Attendance will be taken at the

beginning of each class and teachers from Latrobe High will be there on the day. Students are encouraged to

ask lots of questions and share their experience with their parents upon their return.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to give me a ring at school on 6426 1061 or email me on

[email protected].

GRADE 9 REPORT

Term 3 is well on the way and students are productively working through their learning programs. A few

weeks ago, I reminded the Grade 9 students about our school values and challenged them to continue to

improve themselves with these in mind. The big ones that I mentioned was that I would like all of the grade to

focus on positive relationships and resilience. With regards to positive relationships, I wanted all students to

ensure that their behaviour was promoting positive relationships, such as being kind and being inclusive. More

importantly, I didn’t not want to see behaviours that were working against building positive relationships such

as putting people down, intentionally isolating people from a group or being rude and unkind. I also mentioned

that resilience plays a big part in how we interact with others and how we feel about ourselves. I set a goal for

all Grade 9 students, that when there is an issue or drama, any contribution that is made is done in a positive

way or not at all. I also requested that students seek assistance from support networks such as your friends,

teachers, or the schools support services.

Looking at how students have started the term, I can see a real improvement in the areas that we were

focussing on. I congratulate the students who have made great grounds in building more stable relationships

and to those students who are being more respectful. It is very pleasing to see this change in environment, and has meant that we are seeing more positive interactions within our group. As a reward for this upward trend,

the Grade 9 students will be treated to 10 Pin Bowling on Tuesday 3 September. This time coincides with the

Grade 10 students going to Don College and the Grade 6 students visiting Latrobe high.

I am pleased to say, we are having a happier Term 3.

Thank you for reading.

‘MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING’

On Tuesday 27 August, 23 Grade 10 students along with Ms Perry, Mr Lawson and Mrs Taylor

travelled to Burnie for dinner and a show. We went to watch the Shakespearean comedy ‘Much Ado

About Nothing’. But before the play started, we all went for tea in downtown Burnie.

The play was a romantic comedy filled with lots of humour and entertainment. It went over 2 halves

and had a 15 minute interval in between. The actors were amazing and it was a great opportunity to be

able to watch Shakespeare live. One of the actors in the production was Jett from Home and Away

(Will McDonald). That certainly had us paying a bit more attention.

Overall we had a wonderful time and now know that Shakespeare’s comedies are actually really funny.

Big thanks to Ms Perry for organising the event and to Bell Shakespeare for putting on the amazing

performance.

STUDENT WELLBEING SURVEY

The wellbeing of our students is important to us.

To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in

Years 7-10 will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.

The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing

Strategy.

The survey will be completed on the following dates during class time:

Grade 9 - Wednesday 4/9

Grade 10 - Wednesday 11/9

Grade 8 - Thursday 12/9

Grade 7 - Thursday 12/9

If you would like further information, please contact Fiona Heazlewood, Assistant Principal on 6426 1061.

Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to

flourish, so they can engage in learning.

‘BE YOU’ PERSONAL INTEREST CLASS

Be You is a new Personal Interest Class for Grade 7/8 girls that started this term. The name “Be You”

shows what the class is all about and how amazing it is to be your true self. It’s about girls realising

their own self-worth, improving confidence and self-esteem, building inner-strength and self-belief,

growing friendships, improving health and body-image, managing stress and gaining the tools essential

for living a happy, healthy and inspired life. So far this term we have been working on improving our

self-confidence and looking at ways to make us smile more. The girls identified areas they would like to

learn more about and also areas they would be happy to support and teach each other. This term we

have been learning to crochet, with the aim to complete a blanket to donate to the local nursing home.

Thanks to Mrs Lyn Butler for all her support. This is definitely a work in progress as lots of the girls

have never crocheted before. We were overwhelmed with the kind donations of wool and materials,

especially from Jane Rigby from “Sew” n “Sew” in Latrobe.

A few weeks ago we had Caity come in from GRLinPWR to take a Self-Love Simplified workshop. The

workshop is designed to help girls swap self-sabotage for self-love.

We loved having Caity come in and work with us for the “Self-Love Simplified” workshop. She was very enthusiastic, funny and kind and made us all feel relaxed as she was a great presenter. It was good to hear her

story and see how excited she is about doing something she loves. We learnt lots about ourselves and what

values we have and who influences us the most in life. We were all so different and taking the time to do

something like this made us realise how often we change ourselves to try and fit in with others. Using positive

affirmations like “I AM POWERFUL” really helped to make us feel stronger. We’re looking forward to opening

our letter to our future self. Thanks for putting a big smile on our faces Caity!

Tazmyn Bissett & Zoe Whish-Wilson

Last week we had Natasha Armitstead from The Don College take us through a session on hair care

and hair styling. Thanks Tash for coming over and showing the girls some new styles and letting us have

a play with the head forms and products. I loved seeing the smiles on the girls faces when they had

their done.

We’ve also had a visit from Lisa Evans our fabulous school health nurse. It was a great opportunity to

learn about all the different sanitary products available for women. Who knew there were so many

different options. There were lots of interesting looks on the girls faces when she spoke about

menstrual cups. The following is a great site to find out more information about them https://

www.healthline.com/health/womens-health/menstrual-cup#advantages

Lisa is available on Wednesday’s to meet with students. Thanks Lisa!

We focus every lesson on a new quote and talk about the importance of

positive self-talk. I love this one from Dr Seuss.

5/6 SORTS EXPO

On Wednesday 7 August, the North West Primary Schools Sports Association organized the grade 5/6

Sports Expo. A number of grade 9 and 10 students from Latrobe High School volunteered their time to

assist sport coordinators at various venues around Devonport. The duties they assisted with ranged from

running skills sessions to umpiring games.

Once again the feedback from the NWPSSA and venue coordinators has been very positive. The students

were commended on their initiative, sport related skills, showing empathy, communication skills and their

overall behaviour.

A big thank you to the following students for giving up their day to assist at the event:

OVERLAND TRACK

This weekend 6 members of the leadership team will be joined by members of the Police Search and

Rescue, SES and 3 staff members to complete the Overland Track for awareness for the Tim Blair Run

for the Kids Foundation for Gold September. Sif, Monique, Belle, Oliver, Elijah and Jonte have been

training hard with multiple walks during the last few weeks highlighted with a 44km walk last weekend at

Narawntapu National Park. Images are from the Triple Top walk, Narawntapu Walk and Western Creek

Walk.

CLIMATE STRIKE UPDATE!!

Well, we don’t have to travel to Burnie to attend the climate

strike on September 20. There is now an event in Devonport (organised by one of our ex-students, no less!). At this stage, the

venue listed on the School Strike 4 Climate website is the

Providore Place, Devonport, but that may change. Check

www.schoolstrike4climate.com for updates.

Also, a film has been produced showcasing how positive our

world could be in 2040, using technology that already exists ---

thanks for the inspiration, Damon Gameau (‘2040’ documentary).

I will be getting a copy of this film, and showing it to our climate

strike students---we need hope and active positivity, alongside an

unflinching awareness of reality. I will also be running an evening

showing of this documentary, open to the public. More details

later.

Samuel Johnson from ‘Love your Sister’ will be visiting Spreyton Primary School on the evening of

Wednesday, 4 September 2019 from 6.30pm to 8.00pm.

Samuel, a Gold Logie winning actor, advocate, and recent winner of Dancing with The Stars, has been

touring Australia in search of the ten millionth dollar that he promised to raise for cancer research in

the name of his late sister Connie. He announced last Saturday night, 24 August that the magic $10

million dollar mark had been achieved.

‘Love Your Sister’ started with an insane dare. Co-Founder Connie Johnson dared her younger

brother, actor Samuel Johnson to unicycle around the country in the face of her terminal diagnosis with

breast cancer. Their aim? To remind every mum in the land to check their boobs.

Samuel has said he is only just getting started and has embarked on a two-year long lap around Australia

in his schmick Avan Motorhome and Tasmania is the second state he is visiting. His mission? To remind

every mum in the land to be breast aware. To keep raising more funds for research. To meet with

cancer patients.

We welcome everyone to join us at Spreyton Primary School’s Multi-Purpose Hall and, listen to the

very inspirational Samuel speak, there will be a meet and greet after where you can have a chat, get a

signature etc. The ‘Love your Sister’ merchandise trailer will be there with lots of items to purchase

and if you can possibly spare a few dollars to contribute to the fundraising campaign to help find a cure

for this insidious disease I’m sure that would be appreciated too.

Love Your Sister proudly passes on every individual donation to scientific research.

If you have any questions in regard to this please contact Karen on 0419 596 169.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL

Appointments

We understand some students may need to leave school during the day to attend appointments. If this is

the case, it is essential they follow the school protocols.

Sickness or Injury

If students need to be collected from school as a result of illness or injury, the office staff will contact

parents. Students SHOULD NOT be contacting parents through their own devices. Students still need

to follow the school protocols and sign out when leaving.

School Protocol

This system is in place to keep our records accurate and ensure the safety of all our students so please

help us by following our protocols.

¨ A note of permission should be provided from the parents if it is a pre-arranged appointment.

¨ Students need to sign out at the front office and sign in, if and when they return to school.

¨ Students must be collected from the front office, not met in the car park or on the road.

¨ The person who collects the student must also sign them out.

IF PARENTS NEED TO CONTACT YOUR CHILD DURING SCHOOL HOURS, YOU

ARE TO RING THE SCHOOL OFFICE ON 6426 1061 AND A MESSAGE WILL BE SENT

TO YOUR CHILD.

Students Arriving Late to School

If your child arrives late to school they must sign in at the office. You will then receive a text message

asking you to explain your child's lateness if you have not already done so. Students must sign in at the

office if they are late no what time they arrive to school.
