Beautiful weather, wonderful canteen picnic packs not to mention the laps walked by students and their families all combined to create a wonderful community event. Staff and students joined in with the creative ‘mufti’ theme to add to the festive atmosphere of the day. It was great to have so many parents join their children on this walk. Not only did the day focus on raising money for our purchases of technology and readers but also provided an opportunity for the promotion of a healthy life style activity. The P&C worked tirelessly to provide the many prizes that the students will receive. They also manned the checkpoints and counted the money throughout this week – thank you parents. Thank you to all families who have sponsored students. Your generosity is appreciated and will certainly help support the very well resourced learning environment that each child experiences daily when they come to school. The commitment and dedication of parents, staff and students is reflected in the wonderful resources that this school provides. Coffee with Heather: The very first ‘Coffee with Heather’ was a most enjoyable morning chat. I very much appreciated the opportunity to chat with members of our school in an informal way. The next ‘coffee with Heather morning will be Tuesday 1 st November in the hall from approximately 9am to 10am. During this morning’s gathering I will chat and discuss any issues that may be of concern for you but also there will be an opportunity for you to inquire about how mathematics is presently taught in classrooms. Come along and ask questions that you may have regarding how maths is taught to your child in today’s educational context. I look forward to chatting to you. School Security 9672 2000

Our School Newsletter Beaumont Hills Public School

Dear Parents, Walkathon: Today, staff, parents and students took part in our school walkathon.

The next ‘coffee with Heather morning will be Tuesday 1st November in the hall from approximately 9am to 10am. Term 4 – Week 2 Thursday 20th October, 2011

Sport in Schools: Throughout Term 4 students will have the opportunity to participate in the development of skills and fitness through the Sport in Schools program. Over the term students will use an amazing variety of equipment (students never use the same equipment twice) to develop their hand eye and foot eye co-ordination, strength in the upper body, athletic skills involving jumping, sprinting, hurdles as well as improving their aerobic fitness. All instructors with Sport in Schools are fully trained PE teachers. This week the skill focus was on aerobic fitness, hand eye coordination, long jump skills and development of upper body coordination and strength. The equipment used is world class and is made available to students in a way not possible by one school. The purchase and storage of such a wide variety of resources would be almost impossible. These photos provide a brief 'snapshot' of this week's lessons.

Fun activities during Sport in Schools

Surveys: Thank you to all families who took the time to complete our online surveys on School Culture at Beaumont Hills and on attitudes to Reading. Your feedback combined with those from surveys completed by staff and students will provide information that will allow planning for 2012. and beyond. The findings of these surveys will be published in the upcoming Annual School Report. The P&C have also had input into examination of the School Mission Statement as part of the planning process. The Mission statement is below: ‘The staff and community of Beaumont Hills Public School are committed to meeting the needs of all students, to enable them to function effectively in a changing society and to embrace the challenges of lifelong learning within a dynamic, safe and nurturing environment. The school community is committed to

promoting three ideals integral to our purpose: Respect: for self, others and the environment, through promoting positive self-esteem and social conscience. Responsibility: for oneself and ones learning through being an effective contributing member of society. Resourcefulness: being able to respond, adapt and apply oneself in a challenging environment. By developing these ideals of respect, responsibility and resourcefulness, our children will be empowered to achieve and to reach their full potential. Enrolments for 2012: If you have not yet enrolled your child for 2012 then we ask that you do so as soon as possible. Accurate numbers assist greatly with effective planning for next year. Interactive White Board Update: As you will be aware a component of the commonwealth government’s stimulus package was the building of six additional classrooms fitted with interactive whiteboards. I am pleased to announce that these interactive whiteboards are scheduled to be installed within the next fortnight. All students and staff will now have access to full interactive facilities in their classrooms. End of year Performances: Keeping in the theme of ‘Celebrations’ for our 10th Birthday, staff and students are currently working very hard on the K-6 End of Year ‘Celebration’ performance. Times and dates are yet to be advised. This is a performance not to be missed. Details regarding how to purchase tickets will be outlined closer to the date. Watch the website for updates. This is an event that students are very excited about, and one that is not to missed. Slap Cheek and German Measles (Rubella): It has been bought to my attention that we have had a case of ‘Slap Cheek’ at the school and a suspected case of German Measles. Slap Cheek is a mild illness in children. It is a virus, so it just needs to run its course until your child is better. Children are required to stay at home until symptoms have gone and you have clearance from your local doctor. It usually starts with a fever and flu-like symptoms and obvious red cheeks, like they have actually been slapped. It takes approximately three to seven days for the virus to leave the system. German Measles (Rubella): Measles is characterised by a telltale rash which usually starts on the face and can spread to the rest of the body. Before the rash appears, your child may have been feeling unwell for several days. They may have a fever, runny nose, and cough. The rash appears about two weeks after your child has been exposed to measles. They could be contagious from just before symptoms appear until about four days after the rash develops.

School Band: The School Band is now taking enrolments from current years 2-5 students to start band in 2012, . Learning an instrument in an ensemble is a great way to experience the social, educational and personal benefits that music and the arts have to offer. Students will have attended a Demonstration Concert by the band and Teaching Services Australia (TSA) teachers. ‘Gold’ Band Program Introductions (Expressions of Interest) were handed out. This tear-off slip must be returned within 5 days to the school office if interested. Students who have done so will have the opportunity to try out instruments they wish to play in the band. A comprehensive Enrolment Pack, with the results of their instrument test, will be sent home with them. TSA is committed to providing a quality concert band program, with full band rehearsals, great value group tuition and rent-to-buy instrument hire. If further information is required, please email your requests to [email protected]

NSW School Swimming Scheme: Arrangements have been made to include a learn to swim program in our school curriculum. The Department of Education and Training School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The Scheme is conducted over ten days. Each daily lesson is 45 minutes. This program is for students who have not reached a satisfactory standard of water safety and survival skills, and are unable to swim 25m confidently unaided in deep water. The scheme is due to commence 7 November—we have extended the cut off date to Friday 28 October, 2011. Please check the website for further details. NAPLAN results: NAPLAN results this year have been very pleasing indeed. The growth of results from 2010 to 2011 validates the effective teaching and learning processes that operate at Beaumont Hills . Staff have critically reflected results through the data generated by DET . Thus critical professional reflection assists in forming the target areas that the school will focus throughout 2012. Well done students and staff of Beaumont Hills. NAPLAN results of which we should all be proud. Cyber Safety Presentation:

On Tuesday evening parents and their children attended a presentation by Senior Constable Rob Paterson , Police Youth Liaison Officer on the safe and appropriate use of the internet. Parents and their children were presented with the latest laws and safe procedures currently surrounding the use of social networks , such as Facebook. I am sure all who attended left with practical strategies to support their child’s introduction to and use within the cyberworld.

Heather Thomas Principal Sports report:

The NSW Primary School Athletics championships were held this week at Homebush Olympic Park, and 2 of our students represented the Sydney West region at this event. Amanda B and Samuel L were both in the 100 metres for their age group, and while this report was prepared prior to the championships getting underway, we can wish them both every success in their events.

Summer PSSA resumed last week, and there were some excellent performances by many teams. Quite a few teams are in the running for semi final positions. There are 5 rounds this term, with the competitions concluding Friday11th November.
