Dads and granddads have a significant role to play in helping their children/grandchildren realise that school is important. It helps them acquire many skills they will need to function as adults. Putting in a good effort at school will also give them more options for work when they reach young adulthood. The longer they attend school and the more they achieve in their studies matter a lot when it comes to avenues for future employment and work satisfaction.

Many fathers and grandfathers understand the above very well and encourage their children/grandchildren but many others think that anything to do with school is for the women of the family to deal with.

I think that children are best served when they get positive messages about the importance of school from both the significant female and male family members.

How Can You Encourage your Child/Grandchild at School?

Show interest in what they do at school. When warranted, praise them for their

work and behaviour at school. Attend as many school performances and

assembly award ceremonies as you can. It shows them that their efforts are important and recognised by not only the school but by you as well

Find a way to visit your child for open classroom sessions e.g. in Education Week or Grandparent’s day.

Listen to them read or help them do something for school.

Talk school up and never criticise the school or their teacher in their presence. If you have an issue with anything at school see the teacher involved privately and if needed, the principal. Children will often be negative to teachers and the school if they know their parents are. In those circumstances, I have never seen a child’s performance and behaviour at school improve.

N.B If your family does not have a dad or granddad, perhaps involve a significant male role model e.g. uncle.

An opportunity has come up for us to have our Year 6 Farewell at Panthers this year and perhaps every year from now on. If you would like more information or to have your say, please log on to our website, read the note titled "Proposed Change to Year 6 Farewell" in the permission notes tab and send in your comments. Thanks.

Mrs Michael (Year 6 Farewell Organiser)
