@ SSPS Principal’s Message Dear Parent/Carers, Welcome to Term 4, Week 5 everyone. Another exciting week, especially for those in our second group of Stage 3, who are attending their overnight excursion to Canberra on Wednesday and returning Friday. An incredible itinerary of learning has been planned for them. And what enduring memories will be created. This week also marks the last session of our 2020 Kindergarten Orientation. REALLY GREAT NEWS Two weeks ago, an obviously unwell Rainbow Lorikeet was found in the quiet area by a small group of our students and gently, caringly handed into the office. Ms Pensabene transported this bird to the Animal Referral Hospital which is a WIRES facility (https://www.wires.org.au/) where the bird was treated. After recovery the lorikeet was returned to the school and released. I am sure you are as thrilled with this outcome as we are! SSPS is giving a $50 donation to the hospital to help cover the cost of treatment. Thank you SSPS students. Congratulations to Mark Everett, who competed at the NSWPSSA State Athletics Carnival recently. Mark finished 12 th in the 100m at 61.95% of the world record, 13 th in the 200m at 57.23% and 4 th in discus at 40.96%. He was also selected to be the flag bearer for Sydney East at the opening ceremony of which he was very proud. Mark’s family report he had a great time and made lots of friends. NB: We love to hear if your child has competed, succeeded, or has completed something you want us to share. Please send us the information via our school email address. Events that are of a Department of Education nature will be published in The Scene whenever possible. Out of school achievements will be shared with the student’s class, teachers and the first stage assembly, whenever possible. STAGE 3 CANBERRA 3 DAY EXCURSION Last week the first of our Stage 3 classes journeyed to Canberra for their 3 day excursion. All students and teachers had a great time and all enjoyed the experiences of visiting places of national importance such as the Australian War Memorial and Parliament House as well as interactive educational facilities including Questacon. This excursion aligns with the current Stage 3 History unit, where students are able to gain a hands-on experience about our nation’s history and cultural identity. Group A Stage 3 students will be leaving for on Wednesday morning for their journey to Canberra. We wish you a safe and enjoyable overnight excursion. I would like to thanks the Stage 3 teachers for giving up their personal time and time away from their families to provide this great opportunity to our SSPS Stage 3 students.

Dates: Group A (S3D, S3P, S3L, S3O): 13-15 November, 2019.

‘THINKUKNOW’ CYBER SAFETY SEMINAR SSPS will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on Tuesday 26th November at 2:00pm in our School Hall and all parents and carers are encouraged to attend.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber-safety education program that educates students, parents and carers of how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way. The Australian Federal and State Police Forces are partners of this initiative.

The presentation covers issues relating to children and young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing. Your child will also be attending a similar presentation during school hours that week.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology, especially with the upcoming summer holidays.

For more information, you can also visit www.thinkuknow.org.au

The vouchers may be used with an approved Active Kids provider. There are over 10,000 providers in NSW. The vouchers can be used to pay for out of school physical education programs including netball, soccer, gymnastics, tennis, tae kwon do and baseball. Share the Dignity Fill a handbag with a Christmas gift for women and girls in need. #itsinthebag 2019 will run from Friday November 22 to Saturday December 7.

Donate to our Christmas collection #itsinthebag. You have the power to make life better for a woman or girl experiencing homelessness or poverty this Christmas. Provide pads and tampons, personal hygiene products and everyday luxuries to homeless women, women at risk or women

experiencing domestic violence.

It’s simple, you can donate a handbag in good condition that you no longer use or donate items that would make a woman feel special, pop in a thoughtful note or Christmas card and show her someone cares.

Our SRC are on the mission to collect and assemble Christmas handbags for women and girls in need, so next time you’re at the shops,

collect a few items and bring in your donations to help support this very important cause.

No matter how you celebrate Christmas with your family, this will be the most meaningful and appreciated gift you give this year.

Strathfield South PS School Band

Music makes young people great!

2020 BAND MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!

The Strathfield South PS Band Program is a vibrant and fun program, where every student has an opportunity to learn an instrument in a supportive and collaborative setting. Our experienced music teachers from Directions In Music specialise in teaching primary school instrumental music programs, and we are excited to be welcoming our newest young musicians to join the band in 2020! Learning a musical instrument is a wonderful skill for young people to have, and provides many rewarding benefits to a child’s development. Most importantly, playing music with our friends is fun! About the Program Students joining the band program will attend two sessions each week. There will be a band rehearsal, as well as a group tutorial held separately for each instrument. There is no need for students to have any musical experience to join the band as the program will cater for complete beginners.

Following the application process, places in the band will be confirmed after the due date, and we will then organise all the details to commence lessons from the beginning of Term 1. Our DIM Team can assist in organising an instrument for your child, and we’ll arrange our specialist tutors to teach them everything they need to know!

When are the rehearsals and lessons?

● Band rehearsals are held on Wednesdays before school from 7.50am ● 30 minute group lessons for each instrument are held after school on Mondays

What does membership cost?

● You can pay your fees EITHER monthly or termly: o 4 equal termly payments of $190 o 11 equal monthly payments of $70

● Students will receive a Beginner Band Kit (band book, practice diary, & bag) at a cost of $35. ● DIM is a registered provider for NSW Creative Kids Rebate Program - $100 can go towards your
