ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL I begin this final report for 2017 by thanking everyone in the Delany family for effort and assistance throughout the year. While it sometimes feels that the year comes and goes so quickly it is a fact that an enormous amount of work and learning is accomplished along the way.

THE DELANY COMMUNITY Delany staff have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks juggling many balls. With examinations having run in weeks 5 and 6 of this term, the time since has been correcting work, providing feedback and preparing end-of-year reports for all students. Further, the College Leadership team have, during the past week, been auditing the teaching and learning programs from all faculties in preparation for next year. It is an expectation that lessons are prepared, learning tasks are rich and engaging, and that assessments are planned for Semester One of 2018. The timeframe in which this work needs to be completed means that all our staff are working very hard right now. My sincere thanks is extended to every member of our team. First to our teaching staff who work so very hard to ensure and encourage good learning environments, experiences and outcomes for your children. Further, our administrative staff act as the glue for all that occurs - from greeting and assisting students at student services, to making and receiving phone calls, tending to sick and sore students, and all the while doing so with generosity, sincerity and good humour. Finally, thanks to our finance and maintenance team who, quite literally, keep the lights on and the bills paid. The role parents play in the successful learning of their children is second to none. Your influence is strongest through showing an interest in the study and work being done by your children, even when some of the ‘technical’ work of formulas, facts and techniques are beyond our parental capabilities. Your participation in and attendance at the various Delany College events, such as information evenings and College assemblies (to name a few) also sends a very positive message that demonstrates that we work in close partnership with your children. We will encourage and promote even greater opportunity for parental involvement in 2018. Thank you for your support this year. The Delany community is, ultimately, the students of the College. It is a privilege to get to know sometimes a little, and sometimes a great deal, about each student’s story. The majority of our students are willing to share their story, their wins and losses, and their successes and failures. They are an open and honest bunch! The great pleasure I receive from being surrounded by youth is the joy and energy that rubs off and infects me and reminds me every day that teaching is the most precious of professions. As a friend of mine says we are forming the lives and minds of Australia’s and our Church’s future. Quite a responsibility indeed. Thank you to every Delany student.

THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY On Tuesday 5 December the College gathered for our end-of-year Academic Assembly and Prize giving. This event provides an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements and hard work of our students. Of course there are many hard working students who do not receive a prize on this day, but their efforts will be recognised in the end-of-year reports that will be distributed next week. The highest academic award was presented to Madeline Zaher as first placed student in Year 11. Madeline also received the Western University of Sydney award. This award provides the recipient $500 towards their tuition for 2018 and more significantly the offer of a scholarship to WSU to the value of $20 000. Congratulations! The list of award recipients is included in this newsletter.

THE PATRICIAN COMMUNITY Last Friday Mr Muscat, Mrs Stow and I attended the annual Patrician Schools leadership meeting. Our five Patrician schools - Delany College, Holy Cross College, Patrician Brothers College Fairfield, Patrician Brothers College Blacktown and All Saints College Liverpool - were all represented, as well as a number of the Patrician Brothers and members of the Delany Foundation in attendance. During the evening we reflected on the work we have variously achieved in our schools, swapped stories and ideas with each other, and have planned the next year’s network events. It is evenings such as this, and the many events that our students attend, that remind us that Delany College is a Patrician school through-and-through.

BEYOND THE DELANY COMMUNITY St Vincent de Paul appeal Students and staff have been challenged to donate presents and food items for families in need within the Granville and surrounding areas. Each mentor class has a designated family. For example, one class may have a family with a mum and three children of ages 11, 8, and 7. Our objective is, of course, to share the spirit of Christmas with these families and embody the words on our College crest: Love. Serve. Hope.

SCHOOL DIARIES IN 2018 At the beginning of the 2018 school year students will be given a school diary for the year. At the moment only Years 7 & 8 have a diary because we had adopted an electronic version in 2017. A key feature that we have found missing from an e-diary is the opportunity to communicate with parents using a quick handwritten note in a diary, and for you to then respond. A physical copy also keeps learning and planning in front of students eyes all the time. I pray that the joy of the newborn Christ fills your families over the break and that 2018 is filled with happiness and peace. Mr Anthony Blomfield Assistant Principal

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming”. During this Advent journey we prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ into the world as a baby , we celebrate the incarnation. In this Advent season we always remember those who go without. We remember that Mary and Joseph sought refuge in a place far from home. We remember that it was the kindness of a stranger that ensured they had shelter when Jesus was born. We remember that we are called to show the same kindness. Our annual Christmas Hamper Appeal is one such way that we are able to help those in need. Students and staff have been contributing to the Hampers for a few weeks. The Christmas Hampers are a visual sign of our Christian call of solidarity with the poor. These hampers will go to families who are in need over this Christmas season. Next week is our final school Mass when we will celebrate Advent as a school community and present these hampers to the St Vincent De Paul society. We hope that they bring a smile and a small taste of festive joy. This week our students from Year 9-11 are also attending the Australian Catholic Youth Festival, It's going to be an excellent opportunity for them to engage with likeminded Catholics from across Australia. We can't wait to hear all their stories and will keep you update via the Delany Twitter Page! God Bless Mrs Karina Stow Religious Education Co Ordinator

CURRICULUM With the end of the year fast approaching, I would like to congratulate all the students that have approached their studies with Persistence, Pride and Passion. It was my privilege to be part of the celebration of our top students at our awards ceremony on Wednesday. Inside the report envelope are the Term Effort Awards and First Place Certificates for all subjects. This was a big job, and a testament to how well our students have achieved this year. I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a safe holiday. Mr Mark Robinson Head of School Learning & Diversity

FROM THE PEDAGOGICAL LEADERS Now, that we are just a week away from the completion of the 2017 school year, we can certainly look back and question, “Where did this year go?” Upon reflection, our first year at Delany College has been truly an enjoyable experience. Every day, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to be at a school, where teachers are committed to creating strong relationships with their students. In turn, we have witnessed young adults who exhibit qualities of love, honour and respect within themselves and their school community. As we prepare to happily join with Christians around the world in remembering the birth of our saviour, the good news of Christmas is that God brought hope to all people. ‘But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2: 10-11) Hope is a very formidable influence in our lives and our hope for the families of Delany College is that Christmas and 2018 brings hope: an optimism that the year ahead will be filled with delightful experiences, spirited relationships and resilient young people who are ready to tackle the New Year with passion. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Sharon McManus and Jo McKeown

Donate A Goat This Christmas This term, Year 10 Geography has been studying the topic of Human Wellbeing, comparing data between countries that are developed, like Australia, with those that are underdeveloped like Bangladesh and Tanzania. It was with a big Delany heart that Year 10 supported World Vision's annual campaign contributing to the Christmas of a family in need of basic resources. Among the ideas of gift-giving, Year 10 has decided to purchase a goat. For only $40, a goat can provide milk, a great source of calcium as well as being sold for income, lifting families out of poverty. Please join us on Monday December 11 in Mufti clothes, by bringing a gold coin donation to purchase the likes of a goat, blankets or fruit trees for a family in serious need this Christmas. German Hans – Jorg-Georgi’s Aeroplane Models “ The Museum of Everything”. MONA 2017

TASMANIA & MONA Visual Arts Excursion 24-26th November 2017 It was 2 am Friday morning, we all woke up to face the long day ahead of us. At 3 am we met our driver Mr Muscat at school with staff and students from St Paul’s College who joined us on the Delany bus to Sydney Airport. After a relatively short plane ride we arrived in Hobart where we were met with a breath of fresh, cool air and stunning mountain views. Our first major stop in Hobart was the Museum of Old and New Art (or MONA). Their current exhibition “The Museum of Everything” incorporated works by many non artists – people obsessed with documenting their obsessions. The MONA’s website states “These artists don’t have degrees, but they might have visions or compulsions; they are transcendent scientists, self-taught architects, and citizen inventors; sometimes, they are dedicated followers of personal belief systems, or producing art from inside a hospital or prison.” Inside the permanent collection we encountered some fun artworks, some strange and some… intriguing to say the least. A few shocks and gasps later our time, at the Mona had come to an end, but not before we had checked out Wim Delvoye’s Cloaca machine, which fit into the “intriguing to say the least” category of artworks. Travelling through the quiet roads of Tasmania, passing, Queens Domain, Berriedale and Cambridge and Murdunna, we indulged in the misty horizon and the silent sea creating a complete awe in every person that was surrounded by the spectacular scenery. That night we had dinner at the famous Shipwrights Arms in the historical Battery Point. Waking up to another day of travel, Saturday the 25th, Salamanca Markets greeted us with meters upon meters of fresh foods, homemade confectionery and products unusual to most of us.

Continuing our journey to Port Arthur, the more historical side of Southern Tasmania, the 18th/19th century architecture of the Port Arthur Historic Site provided us with an experience similar to that of the convicts who only a couple centuries ago were punished by living in such terrible states. Some were isolated on islands to fend for themselves whilst others built boats or toiled in coal mines for their crimes. The harsh, gloomy and constrictive cells evoked negative feelings in each one of us, allowing us to come to the conclusion that living in Port Arthur during the 18/1900’s would not be an enjoyable period of time. On our way back to Hobart and our accommodation we detoured through DooTown village near Pirate’s Bay where all the houses have names which include “Doo” like Nought-to-doo, Doo-Little, and Zana-doo. Just another quirky side to Tasmania. Concluding our trip to Tasmania we had the opportunity to visit Australia’s oldest existing Catholic Church (1836), called St John’s and the convict bridge in Richmond. Although arriving to Sydney suffering complete exhaustion from the kilometers of walking and days of sightseeing, this trip would not have been possible without Mrs Broue and Mr Muscat who planned the astonishing trip and drove us to each and every destination. Tasmania would have not been a reality if it wasn't for these two dedicated teachers, and for that we are all very grateful. To have been accompanied by both Mr Muscat and Ms Broue , on our first trip to Tasmania, we can say it is one opportunity that we will never forget.
