As I visit classrooms I see our students doing the best they can and showing outstanding commitment to their learning. Well done keep up the great work. Congratulations to our students who received an Academic Excellence Award at the TLLC assembly this week at The Entrance Campus. A big thank you Mrs Evans for organising a fantastic author visit last week, it was great to see the excitement on the students faces when they were listening to Judy Townsend. Good luck to our amazing athletes who will represent The Entrance Public School next Friday at the Tuggerah Lakes Athletics carnival. We know that our students will give their best efforts and will be proud if their achievements. A reminder that the staff car park is for staff only, for the safety of our students please do not park or drive through the carpark. Thank you for your assistance keeping our students and school community safe. TIME TO ENROL FOR KINDERGARTEN AND PRE SCHOOL 2019 Enrolments are now being taken for children starting kindergarten or preschool in 2019. Please advise the office of your child’s name and date of birth and we will send enrolment forms home for you to complete and return. You will also need to provide your child’s original birth certificate, statement of complete immunisation from Medicare and proof of your current address. If you have any friends or neighbours who may have a child ready to start school next year, please let them know it is time to contact the school for information. Mental maths strategies: We teach children a range of different strategies to add and subtract numbers. By showing them several methods for solving maths questions, we’re helping them to look for patterns. All this builds a good sense of “number” which means they understand the relationships between different numbers and why different ways to add and subtract work well. The goal is that your child will understand many ways to approach a maths problem and will be able to choose a way that makes the most sense to them. School A to Z has a lot of resources,

including help sheets on mental maths strategies, here : www.bit.ly/JkiUsY Does speaking another language at home confuse children? Are your children fortunate enough to be growing up in a home where two or more languages are spoken? Many parents worry that bilingualism can cause confusion and even delays in learning for their children, but according the Raising Children Network, that’s not the case at all. A good knowledge of your native language can actually help your child with learning English. Bilingual children who are read books and spoken to in their in their native language find it easier to learn to read and write in English when they get to school. More information is at www.bit.ly/1m0agnk Have a great week! Mark Rudd Principal

Our stage finalists were: Stage 1: Callum D Stage 2: Charles M Stage 3: Callum S

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The days are starting to slightly warm up and we are heading towards spring! Arriving at School Just a reminder that there are NO teachers on duty until 8.45am in the morning. Please drop your children as close to this time as possible – 9am is even better. Thank you for your cooperation with this. Book Week Parade Book Week is coming up in Week 5. The theme is 'Find Your Treasure', so start thinking of costume ideas! The students will be asked to dress up and we will be having a parade where they can show off their costumes with their class on Wednesday. Some activities you can do with your children to get them excited are reading your favourite books and comparing them to their movie form, creating a new book cover, and reading in different voices. We can't wait for the parade! FORTNITE – Warning for parents It’s the latest super popular shooting game for kids that is drawing fire from mainstream media for being violent, addictive and rage inducing in children. The main game focuses on a Save The World mode where you attack and

shoot enemies with weapons and build defences. However, it’s the online multiplayer Battle Royale mode that is almost exclusively played by youngsters. This pits up to 100 players against each while a storm cloud closes in until remaining players are forced into showdowns. Along with usual advice for parents to play games with their children, and keep games in shared family rooms, here’s a look at what parents need to know about the game to keep it healthy for their children. While playing the game, players can hear swearing (and racist name-calling) from others as well as exchange voice chat messages with strangers. It is played by hundreds of people at once, the range of people they encounter will be wide. WE HAVE NOTICED A HUGE INCREASE IN SWEARING IN OUR PLAYGROUND. If you choose to let your child play (they should be over 12 years old) it should be in an open family space with the volume up so you can hear and manage the conversation. https://www.pocket-lint.com/games/news/144125-what-parents-need-to-know-about-fortnite Importance of Regular Attendance Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps build and maintain friendships with other children. If students miss the basic skills in the early years of school, they may have problems later on. Regular attendance will help your child to succeed in later life. Children should not be kept away from school for such reasons as birthdays, shopping days, or minding other children. Appointments with doctors or dentists should be made either before or after school if possible. As this is often unavoidable, send your child to school before the appointment and return them to school after the appointment, if possible. It is important to let the school know when your child is away. The parent or caregiver should telephone the school or provide a written note of explanation. Make attending school a priority. If a poor attitude to attendance is begun in the early years, it becomes extremely difficult to change the habit in later years. Teach your child that punctuality is a favoured characteristic and ensure that they arrive at school on time. They often miss important information if they arrive late. If your child won’t go to school or having difficulties with any aspect of school life, contact Mrs Bennett as soon as possible to discuss the problem and ask for help. Looking forward to seeing you at this weeks assembly for a performance by 1/2D and 1P. Nicole Heazlewood Deputy Principal

School Banking has arrived at our school with The Greater. Any student who wishes to bank money can bring their bank book and money to the office on Friday mornings. A great new reward system is coming for all students who have a bank account, so make sure you start banking each week.

K6B NEWS This week in Science Week, we have been investigating single use plastics and their impact on the environment. Straws, plastic bottles, cutlery, plates, cups, bags

and cling film are just some of the examples of plastic that cannot be placed in our red bin for recycling. These plastics are sent to landfill and often end up in our waterways and oceans, with disastrous impacts on our marine life. Children have been learning about using reusable containers and water bottles for their lunch and recess. In this way you can help the environment while saving money on plastic bags, cling wrap and single use drink bottles/cartons. Upcoming Events Wednesday 22 August: Book Week Parade Friday 24 August: Zone Athletics Carnival. Please return all permission notes and $4 bus money. Friday 7 September: Parent Meetings. Please return notes indicating your preferred time. Assembly Awards Jett- Being an excellent role model at sport. Paul – Wonderful improvement in reading and writing numbers to 100. TIME Kindergarten are learning how to tell the time on the hour (o’clock) using both analog and digital clocks. We are quickly becoming o’clock

champions and are now learning ‘half past’. You can support your child at home by talking about time and encouraging them to read the time on a daily basis. Have a look at some of our ‘human clocks’!

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

This week is National Science Week and Kindergarten have been completing a number of fun science experiments. On Thursday we will have a Science Fun Day where the children will be making honeycomb, fizzy sherbet, giant bubbles and balloon hovercrafts. There might even be some ‘crazy scientists’ popping in for a visit!!! BOOK WEEK Book Week is right around the corner. This year’s theme is ‘Find Your Treasure’. On Wednesday 22nd August children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Parents and Carers are invited to come along and join in the celebrations beginning at 12:00pm.

DRINKING WATER Being properly hydrated helps your body function at its best. Dehydration – not having enough fluid in your body – can cause headaches, fatigue, crankiness and poor concentration. This term, Kindergarten have been making sure we are drinking enough water throughout the day. Please support us by sending in a bottle of water each day and avoid sending sweetened drinks such as fruit juice. Healthy Hint - Add slices of lemon, orange or mint for flavour and add ice cubes to keep it chilled.

FARM EXCURSION To link in with our Term 3 Science unit ‘Paddock to Plate’ Kindergarten will be going on an excursion to Golden Ridge Animal Farm in Dural. The excursion will be in Week 9 on Friday 21st September. The cost of the excursion is $40 – A note with more information was sent home last week. Welcome to Week 4. Throughout the year we receive many positive phone calls and emails praising our students for the positive ways they represent our school within the community. Occasionally we receive some not so positive. Last week we received an email in regards to inappropriate language and swearing from some

of our students. Swearing is not permitted at school, including the playground and school buses, and will not be tolerated at any time. Last week all students were reminded of this rule and that they are representatives of our school, especially when wearing our uniform. We would appreciate your support with ensuring your child is encouraged to always use appropriate language at school and on the school bus.

Newman’s 5 Steps to Problem Solving “… a large percentage of children fail mathematics because they can’t read nor understand the wording of the tasks they are given to solve.” Excerpt from Biography of Anne Newman as a teacher.

Five useful steps to assist your child with problem solving.

1. Reading - Please read the question to me. Circle the important parts.

2. Comprehension -Tell me what the question is asking you to do.

3. Transformation - Tell me how you are going to find the answer.

4. Processing Skills - Show me what to do to get the answer.

5. Encoding - Now, write down your answer. Does it look right?

Stage 2 Teachers Mrs Haslam (4H), Ms Ambrose (4A), Mrs Burke (4B), Mrs Canobie (3C), Mrs Kirk (3K) and Mrs Duncan (3/4D) STAGE 3 NEWS

Dear Parents/ Caregivers, Although the Canberra Camp is over, there are still some outstanding payments to be made. Please continue to make payments to the office.

Positive Relationships in Stage 3 Building and maintaining positive relationships in Stage 3 is of great importance. Although most of our students practice respectful behaviours in the classroom and on the playground, they are reminded to display respectful behaviours to students who are not in their friendship groups. What we want at our school is for all students to feel accepted and safe. Students are encouraged to be empathetic to one another, especially during this time in their lives when so many changes happen. I often have conversations with students about what makes a good friend and how they can be a good friend to others. I am asking for you to have conversations like this at home with your child/children to further promote positive relationships. School Uniform “The department supports the wearing of school uniform which promotes a sense of belonging for students and creates a positive identity for the school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition of students inside the school and in the community.”- Department of Education School Uniform Policy Stage 3 teachers will be sending uniform notes home in an effort to increase the amount of Stage 3 students in full school uniform (including socks and hats).

Headphones The headphones that Stage 3 have been using/sharing are no longer working. We ask that you please purchase a set of inexpensive headphones/earphones for your child to use at school. This is a much more hygenic option than to share headphones with other students. Sports News Last week, the boys and girls tag teams played at a Gala Day. Despite no wins, our school demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship. Kaiden in Yr 6 was given an award by Mr Stephen for being an outstanding sportsman. He played fair and demonstrated why he is one of our most respected Sports Captains. Well done, Kaiden! Year 6 Farewell Committee In Week 3 a note was sent home asking parents of Year 6 students to join the Farewell Committee. If you have missed out on a note, please see your child’s classroom teacher for a copy. Year 6 Tumbi Tasters continues. Students were assigned a week to

attend. Transport to and from Tumbi Umbi Campus must be organised prior to the day they attend. If your child is travelling with another parent, a signed permission note
