Grapevine - Term 3 Week 7 Thursday 6 September 2018 From the Principal’s desk…… Dear Parents, carers and community, What a wonderful start to this year’s Fathers’ Day festivities, with many of our fathers and grandfathers joining us for a lovely BBQ breakfast and games on the oval. Some dads reported that they ran into friends form school and re-connected while other dad’s reported that it was awesome to be in the school with other men, to just hang out. The smiles on our children’s faces were delightful as they played with their ‘special man in the their life’ at school. We thank you so much for coming along as we know that most of you would have had to organise time off work to get there. On Monday our VPS AFL Team and their en- tourage travelled to Sydney to play off, as part of the last four teams left, for the State Cham- pionship. Our boys played their heart out as they almost pulled off a huge upset by holding a lead over South Deniliquin until the last three minutes when they scored a winning goal. We then went on to win the second game, taking out 3rd place in the state. Well done boys and thanks to Mrs Soorley, the coaches and fami- lies for the awesome support you have given this team. We also had four amazing students go to Warner’s Bay Public School to contest the District Final of the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee. Our students were all very competitive and Josh C came away on the day as the Stage 3 district champion and will now repre- sent VPS at State Finals. Congratulations to all students...a wonderful effort. This result is testimony to the fact that we value spelling skills at our school and have a very successful program Spelling Mastery embedded into our learning. Go the spelling masters! Congratulations must also go to our Premier’s Challenge Debating Team who have been working hard with Miss Ienco and Mrs Gilbert. They had a great win last week and it is so delightful to see them developing their skills and confidence in this rigorous academic pur- suit. So proud of them! This sits well with our Kidsmatter and PBL programs that are teaching our children about resilience. If a child learns form an early age they can avoid supporting the team through lack of resilience, it may set up a belief that it is ok to let the team down due to personal reasons. We would prefer our children to learn that even though something may be difficult, they can push through to support the greater good for all. All students will be travelling by bus to and from the venue on Monday for Dress Rehearsal and Tuesday for the matinee performance. All students are to be signed in at the venue from 5.30pm for the evening performance and then parents will pick their child up from the assigned class teacher in the foyer after the show. Teachers must sight and sign to say you have taken your child and any other children that we have written permission for you to take. We are so excited for you and your family to see our show and for you to see your child/ren under lights, on stage helping our school send a mes- sage through The Arts. SASS (SCHOOL ADMIN & SUPPORT STAFF) RECOGNITION WEEK (3rd - 7th September)

This week we send our thanks and gratitude to all of our SASS staff who often go above and beyond. These people are often our unsung heroes in our public schools.

Our SASS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community. They work in our... office, in our library, our classrooms alongside our teachers and they maintain and care for our buildings and grounds.

Valentine Public School says thank you for the great job you do!

This week’s key sign… This term we are learning to sign the alphabet.

Intervention in Kindergarten… Some students are working with Mrs Schmarr on writing simple sentences. Students are reminded about using a capital letter, spaces between words, sounding out a word and using a full stop. From collecting student work samples other areas of need such as, correctly writing their name with a capital and the correct formation on letters are identified. This then becomes a specific focus during their next intervention lesson.

Intervention in Stage 1… Various students in Stage One are working with Mrs King to improve their literacy skills. Mrs King is implementing the MultiLit program which stands for ‘Making Up Lost Time In Literacy’. Students are showing some wonderful results.

Intervention in Stage 2 and 3… Within Learning Support, Miss Campbell has been using Literacy Pro data to support intervention in years 3-6. Literacy Pro is a research- based, online assessment resource that provides teachers with evidence-based data, so they are informed when making teaching/ learning decisions to develop their students into successful, proficient readers.

During this time, Miss Campbell works with small groups of students to improve their confidence, understanding and comprehension of levelled texts. Students have been increasingly motivated during this time and are excited to undertake tasks that they would normally feel hesitant to complete. With support students are learning to unpack images in a text, scan a text to look for information and identify various features of a text.

School News… Public Speaking and Premier’s Spelling Bee 2018

The very busy term of public speaking and spelling competitions has now concluded. Firstly, our congratulations to all students who participated in these programs at any level, whether it was in front of your class or on stage at Regionals. The Lake Macquarie East Public Speaking Competition culminated with two of our younger students, Lachlan D (KGB) and Lachlan D (2/3R), being Highly Commended by the adjudicators at their zone competition. We also had another two students progress to the next level and represent us at Regionals in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Final, achieving to reach within the top 40 from the state-wide competition. Brodie D (4/5M) and Allira S (4/5M) were both commended for having engaging and well-delivered multicultural speeches. They have also learned a lot about the arduous skill of impromptu speaking along their journey. Finally, four students; Zavier L (3GB), Alessia R (4/5M), Angela F-H (5F) and Joshua C (5/6D) competed against students from our region as a part of the Premier’s Spelling Bee competition. All students commented that the experience was challenging, but rewarding, and they have learned to spell words which they will never forget. Congratulations to all students, with a very special mention to Joshua C, who became the Regional Premier’s Spelling Bee Champion in the senior competition. Joshua’s fine effort has earned him the accolade of attending the State Premier’s Spelling Bee final. This well-deserved achievement sees him heading to the ABC Centre in Sydney during Week 3 of next term. Good luck Joshua! Thank you to the parents who transported and supported our students.

Congratulations to Josh C who has won the Regional Spelling Bee final for Stage 3 today. Here is Josh with his prizes that he will donate to the school.

In centre at Valentine OSHC this week, children will be busy learning new skills like knitting. Children will also have the opportunity to get creative with Hama beads and contribute to our centre mobile. A range of resources are available for children to access at any time, hence plenty of opportunities for free choice art, craft and games. Outdoors, Cricket has been very popular so kids will again have the opportunity to get out the stumps and bats and compete in the Valentine Cup. For those not interested in cricket, basketball, soccer, football, handball and much more are on offer each day. You’ll often find our fabulous Educators challenging the kids in some friendly competitions. At OSHC, children have many opportunities to further develop their social skills and take responsibility for their environment. Children learn to value and respect their environment and are encouraged to pack up after they have finished an activity and before going home. Children are able to take on leadership roles which allow them to develop autonomy, confidence and decision making skills. Children are recognised for their positive contributions through our reward program. MY TIME OUR PLACE Learning Outcome 5 Children are effective communicators Outcome 5.3 Children collaborate with others, express ideas and make meaning using a range of media and communication technologies. Positive Behaviour for Learning – Inspire We will provide opportunities for children to extend on their PBL focus, Inspire, by encouraging discussion around how we inspire others and who inspires you. In addition, how the program and surroundings provide us the confidence to inspire. Interests and ideas will be documented for future program planning. Our Spring Vacation Care program is available online. Activities include a full day of messy craft at the centre. Details of planned activities are now available at the centre and are located on the sign in and out desk. If you would like to book your child into our OSHC service, please visit our website to book on line and register for the new My Family Lounge app at ymcansw.org.au/valentine.

Week 5 activities creating a photo frame for Father’s Day. Sketching, making pom poms and one of our many cola play activities, totem tennis.
