Newsletter No: 29 Wednesday, 13 th September 2017 Dear Parents and Friends, Well we are almost at the end of another term. What a productive term we have had with many events and activities throughout. This term the children have been participating in DanceFever lessons each Tuesday. Yesterday we had our DanceFever Showcase where the students were able to perform the dances they have learnt for their parents. It was wonderful seeing so many parents attend and also to join with their children to have a dance. I always find it enjoyable to see how far the children have come from their first lesson of the term to the Showcase. A lot of this credit goes to the two teachers Michael and Corey who are so energetic and positive and make the lessons fun for the children. They introduce the students to various styles of dance as well as dance etiquette. These lessons cover the Dance component of The Arts curriculum. The Showcase for Year 5 students will be held on Thursday 14 th September in the hall from 10.15am 11.00am. Last night the Board members attended a CyberSafety talk at Emmanuel with presenter, Brad Huddleston, author of ‘The Dark Side of Technology’ and ‘Digital Cocaine – A Journey Toward iBalance’ and Sgt Nigel Dalton (Mackay Police). They discussed the importance of appropriate technology use for all people, especially children under 12. Some of the interesting facts from this talk included; - Minimal technology use is recommended for children under 12. - After consuming digital content, students have what is called ‘Post Stimulation Attentional Drift’ which means their brains are unable to focus and concentrate for up to 3 hours after screen time. - All children are encouraged to have no screen time in the mornings before school, to prevent post stimulation attentional drift. - Students who overuse technology (playing games, apps, watching TV etc.) build up a dopamine resistance that can inhibit their ability to reach their academic and social potential. - The symptoms of digital addiction can include boredom, anger, social withdrawal and a range of mental health issues including anxiety and depression. - Minecraft is the most addictive game. Some suggestions he gave for parents is to remove all technology from bedrooms (including parents) and that a 6 week detox can turn around the negative effects technology has on our children’s brains – no screen time at all for six weeks do things such as exercise and find new passions. If you are interested in Brad’s work, please visit his website, http://bradhuddleston.com I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support and to wish all our staff, parents and students a safe and happy holiday. PUPIL FREE DAY Our teaching staff will be involved in a professional development day on Monday 16th October. Parents please note that this is a pupil free day. Our school office will be open as normal.

SIGNING CHILDREN IN LATE

A reminder please that if students are arriving to school late (after 8.40am) then they must be signed in at the office by a parent.

There are a number of children coming into the office to sign themselves in which is not acceptable.

STUDENT HAIR STYLES

Just a reminder as we approach the end of the term regarding student hair styles. I remind parents about the school’s expectations regarding hair styles, which are available on our website, and ask for your support to make sure that your child’s hair is neat and tidy when at school. I have attached this below:

HAIR & GROOMING

All hair accessories - must be plain and minimalist and in the following colours… navy blue, black, teal or white. Large decorative hair pieces are NOT acceptable. For health and safety reasons, hair that is long enough to be tied back, should be worn in this manner (boys and girls). Haircuts must be neat and tidy in appearance and not falling

into eyes, or around the face. Hair must not be dyed or coloured or worn in a style that is deemed to be inappropriate for primary school.

The following styles are NOT considered appropriate for

MacKillop Students: tracks, rats tails, mohawks, shorter than

gauge 2.

SHOES

With the holidays approaching now is a good time to remind parents about acceptable footwear as it is disappointing to still have a number of children wearing incorrect shoes. Shoes must be Velcro or lace-up black leather or vinyl footwear (Joggers). They must be 100% BLACK. Slip on shoes and canvas shoes are NOT acceptable. ‘Mary-Jane’ style shoes are also NOT acceptable.

FAMILIES LEAVING

As our total enrolment drives many aspects of our school (staffing, budget, class sizes and structure) it is important that we try to be as accurate as possible in predicting the school enrolment for 2018. If you know that you will be leaving at the end of the year could you please notify the office as soon as possible? Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.

PRAYERS Please remember in your prayers anyone who is sick within our community, we pray for God’s healing and restoration.

Keep Smiling

Allison Blakey Principal

THIS SUNDAY'S COMMENTARY This week’s Gospel reading continues the theme of forgiveness from last Sunday, with this reading focussing more closely on a personal forgiveness that does not involve intervention by the community. Peter certainly thinks well of himself, offering to forgive seven times, but that simply isn’t good enough. The standard Jesus offers can be read as either 77 or 490 times. What Jesus expects is a forgiveness that has no limits, that is the forgiveness that God offers to us.

This Sunday's Psalm Ps 102: 1-4, 9-12 My soul bless God, let all within me rejoice in God’s holy name My soul bless God, constantly remembering all God’s blessings.

God heals your sins, heals your ills, saves your life from ruin, surrounds you with love and compassion.

God does not constantly nag, or hold on to anger, Nor deal with us as our sins or depravities deserves. God wraps in love higher than the heavens, those who turn in worship. With mercy wider than the sky, God wipes away our sins. www.prayasyoucan.com.au

ANOINTING MASS Today students from 5K attended an Anointing Mass for the sick and elderly of our Parish at St Joseph’s Church. The children proclaimed God’s Word in the Readings and Responsorial Psalm, participated in the Offertory and handed out hymn books. By attending this Mass, students gain empathy for those they serve, they learn to provide welcome communication with the elderly, and develop a feeling of self-worth and achievement by helping others. These are valuable lessons and a real life application of their faith development. Our MacKillop students ‘did us proud’ today. They represented our school admirably in the way they conducted themselves and related to the sick and elderly in attendance. It is humbling to see our children demonstrate compassion, a generosity of heart and a deep respect for their elders. Well done, Children.

Take some time to reflect on where Jesus has been in your life today.

God Bless,

Helen Privett

Assistant Principal Religious Education

HPE DAY

What is National HPE Day? Since 2012, National Health and Physical Education (HPE) Day has been the annual day on the calendar to raise awareness of and advocate for the value of HPE in Australian schools. The day aims to highlight the importance of HPE and impact on the learning potential and wellbeing of all children, the benefit to all schools, and the valuable contribution to the wider community. The theme, Good for Children, Good for Schools and Good for Communities, is celebrated over a three year cycle. MacKillop will be celebrating this wonderful day this Friday 15

TUCKSHOP ROSTER TERM 4

MacKillop is extremely fortunate to have a Tuckshop which operates twice a week during the school year. We sincerely thank our Tuckshop convenor, Jo Oliver, for the work she does each day to keep our Tuckshop running smoothly. We are also very grateful for the volunteers who give so generously of their time each week to assist in the Tuckshop. We are however, in need of more volunteers to help in this area. We are appealing to any parents or grandparents who may be able to assist in the Tuckshop on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or term basis between 8:30am to approximately 12:00pm. Volunteering is a great way to ‘give back’ to the community, and we certainly need your help! If you are available to help in any way, please collect a Tuckshop Helpers form from the office. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
